The Penthouse
Leo is going upstairs to the penthouse in the lift. He looks at photos of Abigail and Britney on his phone, and looks conflicted. As he steps out into the penthouse, he finds that merry hell has broken loose! David is still there, while Terese, in her wedding dress, is shrieking at Paul and throwing glasses in outrage!
TERESE: You were fine all along?!
PAUL: Yes, because I have been with you!
Leo demands to know what's going on.
No 26
Levi is talking to Kyle about whether he should text Freya. Kyle thinks it's a bad idea, given Freya said she wanted space. But Levi just wants to make sure Freya's okay. Kyle thinks Levi also wants to know where he stands romantically; and warns him that if he goes overboard, Freya's likely to cut him out altogether.
Roxy comes in with Harlow and Ned; they're all packed for their road trip (to Benalla to dig dirt on Freya, unbeknownst to Levi and Kyle, who think they're going to the Dandenongs). Levi tells them to have a good trip, and leaves the room. Roxy thinks he's still being frosty with her because of her interference with Freya. Kyle moodily remarks that he doesn't blame him; and then notices Roxy's packed bags.
KYLE: You going tonight?
ROXY: ... Yeah.
KYLE: I mean, the Dandenongs aren't *that* far. I mean, couldn't you just go in the morning, you know? Save a bit of money on accommodation?
Harlow covers, saying they thought they'd leave early to fit more activities in. Kyle, who's evidently still grouchy with Roxy himself, tells them to have fun, and leaves the room.
ROXY: Not even a kiss goodbye.
HARLOW: Things will be better when we get back.
ROXY: Yeah. Especially when I find out the truth about Freya.
They prepare to leave.
The Penthouse
While David quietly explains what's happening to Leo, Paul begs Terese to look at the situation rationally.
PAUL: It's not like I was pretending it was something fatal! I was always gonna be okay in the end!
TERESE (furious): Are you actually trying to justify this?!
PAUL: We were happy again! Isn't that what's most important?!
TERESE: But none of it was for real! You paid off a doctor for a fake diagnosis! You were lying through your teeth, and for what - for just sympathy?!
PAUL: Oh, I didn't want sympathy! I just wanted you!
TERESE: Oh, you know what? If you think that the devoted act is gonna work on me now, then you are really, *really* delusional!
PAUL: The only reason that you moved in here is because you were feeling guilty about the accident; and as soon as you thought I was on the mend, you had one foot out the door! If you didn't stay, then I -
TERESE: Then what?! What, then you couldn't manipulate me?
PAUL: I just needed more time! We were *so* close to getting back together.
TERESE (tearful): We were. If you'd just left it (...) then we would've found our way back together again anyway.
PAUL: I could not take that chance. Don't you realise I love you too much to take -
TERESE: No, don't you dare! Don't you dare try and profess any kind of love! Cos you just want what you want, and that is it!
PAUL: That is not true! I did this for both of us.
TERESE: Oh yeah, well guess what?! It didn't work. It didn't work because... because you lied to me. Again! You exploited my feelings again and you ruined my happiness *again*! And I cannot, and I will not - I will not enable this behaviour one more time! We are *done*!
Lassiter's Hotel
Shortly afterwards, we see an emotional Terese descending in the lift, still in her wedding dress. She then walks through the foyer in slow-motion, stared at by curious customers and staff.
The Penthouse
Back upstairs, Leo is sweeping up the smashed glass. Paul thanks him for cleaning up, and for not leaving himself.
PAUL: I knew you'd see it from my perspective.
LEO: I'm annoyed with you too (...) What you did was wrong! And offensive - especially to the people who didn't make it out of the accident as well as you did.
PAUL: Oh, I didn't even think - I'm sorry -
LEO: Come on, save it, Dad. Look, I don't like what you did, but... I understand why you did it. So, let's just leave it at that, okay?
Paul decides he needs to go and see Terese. Leo tells him to leave her alone.
PAUL: You saw how angry she was, Leo! What if this drives her to drink again, hey? I do not want to be responsible for that - she needs support!
LEO: Yes, she does - but not from you! You'll just make things worse!
Paul reluctantly agrees, then starts to make a phone call to Glen - but gets his voicemail.
PAUL: Listen, I just wanted to make sure you were at home. It's about Terese; I need to speak to you urgently.
No 22
A sobbing Terese bursts through the door, still in her dress. She shouts out desperately for Glen, but there's no answer. Terese removes her wedding ring, puts it on the counter in the kitchen, and continues to cry. Behind her on the shelf, a note from Glen with her name on it remains unseen...
No 26
Kyle is on the phone to his auntie Naomi, who is seemingly struggling to get hold of Sheila.
KYLE: I dunno why she's not answering. It's trivia night at the pub - she's probably busy... Stop stressing! I'll get her to call you back when she wakes up in the morning...
Levi comes in, and Kyle finishes the call, then explains to him that it was Naomi. Levi's surprised she's trying to get hold of Sheila at this hour, given the time difference between Australia and the US.
KYLE: Apparently, she's been trying to get hold of her for hours.
LEVI: What, more guy troubles?
KYLE: Ah, she didn't say. But with our auntie, it's a safe bet.
The subject shifts to Roxy; Kyle grumpily says she hasn't been in touch since she left. Levi says he's sorry that the situation with Freya has affected Kyle and Roxy. Kyle says he and Roxy will be alright, and tells Levi again to just give Freya some space.
LEVI: I messaged her (...) 'I wish I knew you were okay. I'd really love to see you tomorrow.' No reply yet.
KYLE (sighs): Cous! If you're gonna do this, you're gonna have to do it right, okay? So send her a message, and tell her to meet you somewhere romantic.
Kyle suggests a classy restaurant they drove past the other day. Levi thinks it's a good idea, and taps out the address in a message to Freya. He gets Kyle to press 'send' for him as if to validate the decision!
Ramsay Street
The next day, Paul is banging on the door of No 22, begging for Terese to open it.
PAUL: I just need to know you're alright!
Jane, Chloe, David and Aaron have gathered on the pavement behind him, looking concerned. Chloe tells David that Paul's been at it for about ten minutes.
JANE: Poor Terese!
AARON: It's a wonder she hasn't called the cops yet.
David goes to try to stop Paul from banging, and physically inserts himself between the door and Paul.
DAVID: You need to stop! She obviously doesn't want to talk to you!
PAUL: I am not leaving until I know she is okay. (shouting) Terese, please!
DAVID: Stop! This is bordering on harassment, and we both know that won't end well for you.
But Paul is desperate, explaining that Ned's away and Glen hasn't called him back - he just wants to make sure Terese is alright.
PAUL: And don't think I haven't forgotten that this is your fault!
DAVID: Oh, really?!
PAUL: Yes! You sold me down the river.
DAVID: I am not the one who did anything wrong here. I couldn't stand by seeing her so happy over something that was all a lie.
PAUL: Oh, it was a harmless lie, David!
As they return to the street, Jane starts putting her oar in, but Paul isn't in the mood. He gets in his car and drives off.
No 22
Terese is sitting on the stairs in her nightie, looking exhausted. Jane knocks on the door and calls through it, telling her that Paul's gone. Terese goes to open the door, and Jane comes in.
JANE: Oh, Terese - I heard what happened, and it is awful.
TERESE: It's no surprise. I feel like such an idiot.
JANE: Well, you're not an idiot.
TERESE: Oh, come on. How many times can someone let themselves be duped by the same man? Should've listened to you.
JANE: It doesn't matter now. The important thing is for you to know that you have support whenever you need it. You have me, and you have Chloe, and Glen...
But Terese admits she doesn't even know where Glen is; he didn't come home last night. Jane then spots the note Glen's left for Terese on the shelf, and passes it to her...
Benalla
Ned, Harlow and Roxy are on the high street in Benalla, admiring the town.
NED: We should do little trips more often. Though, maybe without the espionage.
HARLOW: Does make it a bit more interesting, though.
Roxy tells them they need to split up and ask as many locals as possible whether they know of Freya, or her family, the Wozniaks. Any information is valuable, but especially if it proves clues as to what Freya is hiding.
HARLOW: Question - can I get a coffee first?
ROXY: Sure. Just ask the barista about Freya while you're there.
Roxy tasks Ned with heading to the bowls club to 'talk to all the oldies', as it's 'a hotbed of history there' and they may know about Freya's family. Meanwhile, Roxy is going to go and scope out the football club.
NED: Where is the bowls club?
ROXY: (shrugs as she walks off)
Ned looks around for clues, frustrated.
Restaurant
Levi is at the posh restaurant in the city, waiting for Freya to turn up. She soon does, and they smile at one another as he gets up to pull out a chair for her. The flirtation is immediately back on, as Freya says she'd have worn something nicer if she'd known how fancy the place was. Levi replies that she always looks good. 'Smooth!' she retorts.
LEVI: Thank you for coming.
FREYA: Yeah, well... I almost didn't. And then I thought, who turns down a free breakfast? An idiot.
LEVI: Who said I was paying?
FREYA: It's too late now!
They continue to beam at one another...
No 22
In the garden, Terese has read Glen's note, and tells Jane and Chloe that he's seemingly left town for good.
TERESE: There are a few reasons... but he wanted me and Paul to try and have a real chance of making things work. He thought by not being here, it would help (...) He was just starting to rebuild his life. He was connecting with family, and... I've gone and undone that. And for what? For nothing.
CHLOE: It's not your fault.
TERESE: You know, Paul might've been his usual, scheming self. But I was just completely swept off my feet with old feelings, and... hoping that it would magically be different. It's time to face facts that... that I'm weak.
At this point, Glen turns up, having come through the house.
GLEN: That's not true. The fact you're still standing proves that.
Terese smiles, relieved to see him.
Benalla
On the high street, Roxy has returned having drawn a blank at the football club.
ROXY: Nobody had even heard of the Wozniaks, which was weird.
NED: Maybe they're not a sporty family.
Ned has been equally unsuccessful at the bowls club. Roxy gets a text from Kyle, just as Harlow rejoins them, but seemingly ignores it. Harlow hasn't had any luck either.
ROXY: Why is this so hard? Someone should know her.
Harlow shows them a 'cute little bracelet' she found in a shop, which she thinks would be nice to give to Terese to celebrate her second wedding to Paul. Roxy is annoyed that Harlow hasn't been concentrating on the mission at hand, and even more so when Ned and Harlow start chatting about picking up postcards!
ROXY: Guys - we didn't come here for postcards! We came here for information.
NED and HARLOW (simultaneous): Sorry.
Roxy suggests they try the town hall, and the library to search out the local newspapers. Harlow and Ned look bored, but obediently follow.
Restaurant
Freya and Levi continue to flirt. Levi's not entirely satisfied with his meal, so Freya teases him by threatening to tell a waiter; not wanting to make a scene, Levi begs her not to.
FREYA: Come on, you're a big wimp.
LEVI: I'm not a wimp!
FREYA: You're a big wimp.
LEVI: Stop it, it's awkward.
She eventually agrees to stay quiet, but tells Levi he shouldn't accept second best.
FREYA: That's what I was always taught, anyway.
LEVI: By who? Your parents?
FREYA (uncomfortably): ... Yeah.
LEVI: Hey, you never mention them much.
FREYA (covering): What's there to say? Aren't your parents, like, completely boring and unworthy of discussion too?
LEVI: Okay, let me guess. Umm, your dad is... Barry. Goes by Bazza. And hates being interrupted when the footy's on. Your mum is... Aline. Or Eileen. And she's super cheeky. That's where you got your cheekiness from.
Freya evidently isn't enjoying the conversation, and looks oddly emotional now. She continues to force a smile, however.
FREYA: Got it in one!
LEVI: If you don't want to talk about your family, that's fine. I'll tell you more about mine. But I have to warn you, though, some of it ain't pretty.
FREYA: You really don't have to, it's fine.
LEVI: I want to. It's good to get to know each other, right.
FREYA (forced smile): ... Right.
But it's clear something is still eating her up.
No 22
In the garden, Glen and Terese are talking. She's surprised he's back given his note, but Glen explains that Paul left him a voicemail, wanting to make sure he'd be here to support Terese. Leo has since told Glen the whole story.
TERESE (ashamed): And what a story it is.
GLEN: I'm sorry it didn't work out.
TERESE: I find that hard to believe.
GLEN: Okay, I'm... sorry you got hurt.
TERESE: And I'm sorry I didn't listen.
GLEN: I think Paul might be damaged beyond repair. How else can you explain it? To be married to someone like you and to keep destroying it?
Visibly upset, Terese changes the subject, and asks if Glen's back for good.
TERESE: I don't want you to go. I mean, of course, it's your choice, but I'd really appreciate it if -
GLEN: It's okay. I'm not going anywhere.
Terese smiles.
Benalla
We're on the high street again, and Roxy has had no luck digging for information on the Wozniaks at the town hall, though we learn someone at the town hall did recognise the name - they just couldn't remember anything about them. Harlow points out that at least this means they're on the right track here.
Roxy and Harlow catch up with Ned, who's looking at postcards outside a shop. Roxy starts shouting at him, saying he's meant to be asking people about the Wozniaks and Freya! But as fortune would have it, a man nearby (credited as Theo Lyons) overhears them.
THEO: You lot after the Wozniaks?
HARLOW: Do you know them?
THEO: My old neighbours. Had a granddaughter named Freya.
NED (to Roxy): Oh, turns out postcards aren't so useless after all (!)
Ignoring Ned, Roxy tries to charm Theo into giving them the Wozniaks' address, but he says they're 'long gone now'.
THEO: Whole family upped and moved to Echuca, maybe twenty years ago?
ROXY: Do you know why?
THEO: Work, I think. They all had jobs at the hospital. Nursing runs in the family.
As the man walks off, Roxy recalls that Freya told her she was doing temp work - and wonders if she's a temp nurse. Ned points out that Echuca's another two hours' drive from here. Harlow suggests they could call the hospital, but Ned says they won't give out personal information. They all wonder what to do next.
No 22
A musical montage begins; Terese and Glen are playing cards in the sunroom.
The Penthouse
Paul sits on his bed, alone and forlorn. Leo comes in to check if he needs anything, but doesn't get a response, so leaves Paul alone.
No 22
As Terese and Glen continue to play, she looks distracted, and devastated. She's unable to hold back the tears and turns from him. Glen moves over to comfort her, and she cries in his arms.
Benalla
Roxy, Harlow and Ned are at a table outside a bar, looking for clues about Freya on their phones. There's nothing on the Echuca Hospital website, so Roxy instructs them to look on all the socials, as there are tons of photos on there.
Restaurant
Levi thanks Freya again for coming, and admits he was worried about texting her after she asked for space. Freya's smile fades.
LEVI: I just didn't want things to fizzle out between us.
Benalla
Ned has found a photo album on his phone with pictures from a fundraising ball. Roxy tells him to go through it, as it might help them establish whether she grew up in Benalla - then they can confront her if they can prove she's lying. Ned comes across a particular photo, and shows it to them.
NED: You wanted a smoking gun? Have a look at that.
It's photo of Freya pashing the man who she'd previously claimed was her cousin, Gareth, who she arrived in Erinsborough to find...
Restaurant
Levi suggests to Freya that they could catch a movie now if she'd like, but she's looking increasingly upset, and a little scared. She glances around nervously.
FREYA: I, umm... I really want to keep talking. But can we go somewhere more private?
