Number 32
David walks in saying that Harlow can't make it to the gender reveal party. Aaron tells him to be careful as they've just dropped pins all over the floor for the gender reveal board where guests to their party can guess whether the baby is a boy or girl.
DAVID: Any idea what Chloe's surprise will be?
Aaron says he's not sure but says that whatever it is won't top the surprise that she's seeing Nicolette. David says it's her life but Aaron thinks it's a really bad idea.
At the dining table, Emmett asks Brent if he's heard from Holden.
BRENT: No...Things are starting to turn around now...home, school, Harlow, you...(smiles)
Aaron notices a glum look on Emmett's face and tells David he's worried about him.
AARON: Hey Em, listen buddy, I just wanted to say thanks for helping us tidy up earlier.
DAVID: Yeah, you didn't have to do that, it was really helpful.
BRENT: Maybe you should put Em on nappy duties when the baby arrives.
AARON: Haha, na, that's your job.
BRENT: Yeah right, mate (laughs)
Number 24
Chloe is getting her surprise ready for the party as Nicolette exits the bedroom, clearly lovestruck over her new girlfriend. Chloe says they'll be late for the party.
CHLOE: Not pumped to spend the afternoon pretending you're into gender reveals?
NICOLETTE: I will put on a brave face. For the boys' sake.
Nicolette says she's not looking forward to everyone fussing over her baby bump and she wishes that her and Chloe could have kept their relationships to themselves for a while longer, especially because Jane's 'judgy' looks aren't fun.
CHLOE: She'll ease up once she gets used to seeing us together.
Jane walks in with the painting of Mrs Mangel and Nicolette is soon arguing with her about her attitude towards Nic's new relationship with Chloe.
JANE: I've given my blessing.
NICOLETTE: Only to keep the peace.
JANE: Alright...maybe I am still adjusting. But it is only temporary. Before you know it, I will be completely on board with this new relationship.
NICOLETTE: Good, because you're totally killing the romance.
Number 28
Bea tells Hendrix that she's worried how Karl and Susan will react to her wanting to talk to Olivia about the book. Hendrix encourages her to talk to them about it and they hear them talking in the garden, asking if they want to help in the greenhouse.
HENDRIX: Tell them.
SUSAN: Tell them what?
Number 28
Mackenzie arrives, joking that zombies are after her and she runs in the house. When her and Hendrix stop messing around, she asks if he's free to play the zombie game. He's surprised she's not going to Aaron and David's party, but she says she doesn't want to leave him on his own. He says he has an invite too, but she points out that there's no way he'll go with Brent living there.
HENDRIX: True, he's the worst. I'll set up the game.
MACKENZIE: Can I not have the dodgy controller this time?
HENDRIX: There is no dodgy controller.
MACKENZIE: Then can I have the one that you had last time.
HENDRIX: No way, this is my lucky one!
Number 22
Terese, Kyle and Roxy are due to meet Paul at Aaron and David's party shortly. Harlow says she feels bad that she can't go; Roxy tries to get her to come but she says she's not finished her checklist for London yet. Roxy points out that she keeps getting distracted by an old book she's reading, but Harlow tells her it's a diary of her mums. Kyle wonders if there's anything about Gary in there but Harlow says it was from before Prue met him.
ROXY: Confessions from a 20-something Prue, that sounds so hot! No wonder you can't put it down.
HARLOW: It is quite explicit actually.
KYLE: Gross. I'd hate to hear about my mum's hook-ups.
Harlow says that it's not all about guys, there is some other stuff in there, but yeah, a lot of it is about guys. Terese tells her to pack and save the diary to read on the plane.
Number 32
Paul arrives and Aaron tells him to make a guess whether their baby is a boy or girl, choosing a purple pin for a boy, or yellow pin for a girl. Nic approaches and tries to wind Paul up.
NICOLETTE: What do you reckon then? Baby David or a baby Nic?
PAUL: Doesn't matter as long as the baby's healthy.
NICOLETTE: Oh, I'd go for yellow then. The future is female, right?
Paul chooses a purple pin. Meanwhile, Chloe tells Aaron about her little surprise and that it has to be set up in the garden. Jane approaches, asking what they're talking about, offering Chloe help to set up in the garden but she says it's all fine. Jane begins to sing the praises of the two girls in quite an over-the-top fashion, saying how much she's enjoying living with the 'happy couple'.
NICOLETTE: Mum, can you just stop? It's worse than before.
JANE: I'm being supportive.
NICOLETTE: Do you think I'm an idiot?
JANE: No, of course not.
NICOLETTE: Can you just go back to the corner where you were judging us from. It was way less fake.
Number 28
Bea explains to Karl and Susan that she wants to write the book and get their story out there. Karl worries that she'd be putting herself in the spotlight and she has no idea what the publisher might ask of her. Karl and Susan are adamant to put things behind them, but Bea points out that Susan feels the same as her as she's read the notes that Susan made about The Devil You Know and it's not right the way the Kennedy family were portrayed.
BEA: Finn is dead, he can't hurt us anymore.
SUSAN: I wasn't completely open with you...about how dredging up those memories of Finn affected me.
Susan tells Bea about her visions of Finn, and how the more she thought about him, the more he would begin to appear.
KARL: Don't underestimate the toll this could have on your mental health.
SUSAN: You're resurrecting a ghost. One who has unfinished business with all of us.
Number 32
Roxy is telling Brent and Emmett about Prue's diary.
ROXY: You know it's really inspired me to write a diary for my future daughter.
BRENT: What, you as a mum?
ROXY: Yep.
BRENT: Far out, that would be wild.
ROXY: I know (laughs).
Brent walks off and Emmett stands awkwardly in front of Roxy.
EMMETT: How are you? We never get a chance to chat...
ROXY: About what?
EMMETT: I don't know, life...I mean, you got attacked pretty recently. I was wondering whether the police got any more leads.
ROXY: Are you worrying about me?...that is very sweet.
EMMETT: Well we're friends, I'm just looking out for you.
Emmett walks off as Kyle approaches. Kyle tells Roxy to let Emmett down gently, pointing out that he must have a crush on her.
ROXY: Not again...you are so right!
They both glance over at Emmett.
Number 22
Harlow is reading her mum's diary.
"I'd truly never seen anything that huge. Bright as a button with her head on straight. That's my Harlow. If only the men I date were as good as her. I know Derek's been doing it rough, but to steal money from me..."
Terese arrives to check on Harlow.
TERESE: You seemed a little distracted before.
HARLOW: ...It's this book. The more I read it, the more it worries me...Mum had this real thing for dating dodgy guys.
TERESE: Well, some people can't read the warning signs.
HARLOW: Like me? Hendrix and Brent aren't exactly well-adjusted.
TERESE: Two boys don't make a pattern.
HARLOW: It does make the start of one though...
Number 32
Kyle is having an awkward conversation with Emmett about one of his first crushes on a lady who was called 'Mrs Geck'. Chloe arrives just in time, having prepared her surprise: an Easter egg hunt! She encourages David to open the first egg, which contains a piece of paper, reading 'Where did Tyler get the nickname Gertie from?'
CHLOE: Each egg contains a piece of Brennan family trivia.
AARON: That is very nice, Elliott.
CHLOE: Well I thought it was important to remind ourselves what kind of wacko family this baby is landing in (laughs)
AARON: (downbeat) Yeah...
Chloe notices his sudden change of mood.
AARON: Sorry, I'm just thinking of mum.
David consoles him, but Aaron's keen to start the egg hunt. David says they should wait, as Terese and Mackenzie haven't arrived yet.
CHLOE: Well, it's a gender reveal party...as a trans woman, Mackenzie's been misgendered for most of her life.
Aaron and David look like they'd forgotten to consider this.
Number 28
Aaron and David arrive to see Mackenzie. Hendrix makes himself scarce.
MACKENZIE:..Aren't you enjoying your party?
DAVID: That's why we're here.
AARON: Yeah. Look, Mackenzie, the whole party idea was meant to bring people together, not push them apart.
MACKENZIE: You think I'm offended?
DAVID: Aren't you?
Mackenzie smiles.
MACKENZIE: You're excited to be parents. I'm happy for you. I just decided to spend the day with Hendrix.
AARON: Yeah but still, we're part of the same community. We're meant to stick together, aren't we?
DAVID: We should've thought more deeply about the implications of a gender reveal party.
MACKENZIE: I can't pretend that this stuff makes sense to me. I mean gender's something you feel, not something you're told. But I know that you've worked really hard to be parents...and you're going to love your child, whoever they turn out to be. You should enjoy your party. Maybe...instead focus on who your kid will grow up to be. Instead of the whole boy/girl thing.
Aaron and David take on board what she's said.
Number 32
Jane complains to Paul that she was just trying to make an effort with Nicolette, but Paul says that she was never going to get it right with Nicolette, because Nic likes upsetting people. Meanwhile, on the other side of the room, Chloe tells Nic not to let her mum get to her, before leaving the room.
BRENT: Nice job by the way. Scoring a babe even though you're knocked up.
NIC: (laughs) Speaking of, where's yours?
Paul interrupts their conversation. He berates Nicolette for how she's treated Jane but Brent steps in and tells him it's none of his business.
BRENT: This isn't your fight old man, get over it.
Number 28
Karl and Susan are telling Hendrix and Mackenzie how much they're worried about Bea. She approaches following a phone call with the publisher and tells Karl and Susan she's just cut contact with them. Hendrix suggests taking control of the narrative herself and doing something more contemporary to share their story, like releasing a podcast. Karl says they'd have to iron out some of the details first, before Hendrix and Mackenzie head off to play more of their zombie game.
Number 32
Jane is still moaning to Paul about Nicolette, which prompts Terese to remind them that the party is about their future grandchild and they should focus on that. Jane smiles, saying she can't believe they're all going to be grandparents together. In the kitchen, Nicolette asks Chloe what a code green is.
CHLOE: You're supposed to guess!
Jane approaches, asking the girls if they're talking about one of the trivia questions.
NIC: I just came in for a snack.
JANE: You know, when I was pregnant I used to crave salt and vinegar chips and raspberry yoghurt.
NIC:...I crave almost the exact same thing...Pea crisps, but still...
JANE: I almost miss it...the one thing I don't miss is the 2am dash to the toilet.
NIC: I'm 2.15...did you have weird dreams?
JANE: The most vivid I have ever experienced...I wonder what other similarities our pregnancies might share?
Nicolette smiles.
Ramsay Street
Harlow walks up the street as Kyle and Roxy get in the ute. Brent is with them. Harlow wonders if the party is over already but they say that they've run out of ice. They're surprised to see Harlow out, thinking she'd still be packing.
BRENT: You guys go ahead, I'll catch up later.
ROXY: (to Harlow) Hey, I hope you sit next to a hottie.
KYLE: Babe, why would you say that? He's right there.
Kyle and Roxy drive off.
BRENT: Did you wanna hang out this afternoon?
HARLOW: I'm only half packed.
BRENT: That's fine, I'll help you finish up.
HARLOW: It'll probably just be easier if I do it by myself.
BRENT: Ok, well, maybe we can hang out after?
Harlow continues giving Brent the brush off, telling him that maybe they should catch up after London. She's realised that her mum's whole life revolved around guys and she wants time to learn more about her mum and think about her life for a while. Brent wonders whether he should text her or not while she's away and she says he can, but she might be slow on the replies. She apologises if that seems selfish. He looks disappointed and tells her he'll catch her later, before walking back to the party.
Number 32
Aaron and David are about to reveal their baby's gender.
DAVID: The moment we've all been waiting for...
AARON: Alexa, drum roll please.
Drum rolls...
AARON: It's a girl!
Everyone looks excited, Nic looks emotional.
AARON: Hey guys, but let's remember that biology doesn't always get it right. Our baby could be purple or yellow, or green with polka dots, who knows...Our kid tells us who they are when they arrive so.
DAVID: For now let's focus on new life and new family.
Chloe ribs Nicolette for getting teary.
Number 32
Brent arrives home to Nic's surprise.
NICOLETTE: Hey...you're back already, did Harlow get off ok?
BRENT: I wouldn't know. She told me she didn't wanna hang out with me and she kinda wants to be by herself.
NICOLETTE: What exactly did she say?
BRENT: Well, that she wanted to go to London and figure out who she is, without any distractions.
NICOLETTE: Ok. Well, at least we know she won't be hooking up with anyone.
Brent looks anxious about it.
NICOLETTE: Hey, don't stress about it. Harlow is a big achiever, she's probably on some self-fulfilment journey, that's all.
BRENT: Yeah, you're right.
Nic heads out to the garden before Paul walks in.
PAUL: Then again, sounds like it's the beginning of the end to me...see I know my granddaughter pretty well and she doesn't like hurting people's feelings.
BRENT: What's that supposed to mean, Paul?
PAUL: It's just a way of letting you down gently.
BRENT: Well if she didn't wanna hang out with me she would've said something.
PAUL: Didn't she just do that?
Brent looks concerned.
PAUL: Mark my words, it's only a matter of time before she does dump you...hope it's not by text.
Paul leaves the room, leaving Brent looking worried about the situation.
