No 32
Brent is playing computer games when Nicolette comes in, with some of his discarded garments that she's found in the bathroom.
NICOLETTE: Yo, blondie? I'm not trying to ride you or anything, but it's house policy that we clean up after ourselves.
BRENT: Yeah, yeah, alright - I've heard the spiel before. Jeez.
NICOLETTE: Great. So, go restore the bathroom to her former glory.
BRENT: What, like, now?
Nicolette says yes, and demands he come and discover where the cleaning stuff lives. Brent sighs and is about to comply, when Aaron comes in, with Emmett, who's come to visit. Brent puts Emmett in an affectionate headlock, obviously pleased to see him.
EMMETT: Told you I'd be back!
Emmett is going to stay for dinner (Aaron suggests his favourite, mac and cheese) and goes to let David know. Nicolette looks a bit peeved.
Lassiter's Complex
Amy finds Shane working outside the pub. She asks if he's spoken to Dipi since she's been in Sydney; he says not. Amy unsubtly raises the possibility that Dipi might have decided to see Pierce while she's there.
SHANE: Why would you say that?
AMY: I dunno. I just heard Mackenzie and Hendrix talking about the fact that he was up there, and I just... Sorry, I didn't mean to make you feel uncomfortable.
SHANE: Nah, nah, you didn't.
AMY: It would make sense, though - that they saw each other, right? I dunno, it seemed like they'd got unfinished business. But you don't need to dwell on that - that's your past. You've got to focus on your future.
SHANE: Exactly.
AMY: Not to mention your present. Like me!
Amy follows Shane inside to get a drink.
No 32
David and Paul come in, joining Aaron, Jane, Nicolette, Emmett and Brent. Emmett seems pleased to see Paul again, who asks if everything's okay with Auntie Linda at home now. Emmett says it's all good, and David invites Paul to join them for dinner. He agrees, and Aaron takes David to the bedroom to show him the new running gear he's bought him.
Jane and Nicolette have been cooking, and Nicolette asks Brent to take some stuff to the table outside and set it for dinner. Brent acts like it's a massive imposition.
BRENT: You know, you're starting to sound like David and Aaron when I was here last.
NICOLETTE: Oh, you know the drill, then!
Emmett offers to help, and he and Brent go to set the table outside. Paul mischievously remarks to Nicolette that she looks put out.
NICOLETTE: Do I?
PAUL: Mm. Agreeing to let Brent stay here isn't backfiring on you, is it?
NICOLETTE: Course not. Anything for the guys.
PAUL: Yeah. I suppose you didn't really have a choice, did you? Bit like me staying for dinner. Hope it's not gonna be too much trouble.
NICOLETTE: Oh, I'm sure I can manage chopping up a few extra salad items, Paul. Especially considering I bought lots, because I am eating for two.
She smirks at him.
NICOLETTE: It'll be nice. We can have dinner together, as one big, happy family.
Paul smirks back.
The Waterhole
Shane is calling Dipi, ostensibly for an update on Jay. Toadie appears at the bar and listens to the conversation, but evidently Dipi is busy, as Shane tells her to call him back when she has more time. Shane looks perturbed, and tells Toadie...
SHANE: Apparently she's in too much of a rush getting ready for some dinner to give me an update on our son.
TOADIE: I'm sure she will call when she can, mate.
SHANE: I guess, yeah. If it is only dinner. You know that Pierce is up there now, right?
TOADIE: No, she wouldn't be seeing him. It's over between them. She'll be doing something with the kids, mate.
SHANE: Yeah, maybe.
But Shane has evidently been influenced by Amy's stirring earlier.
No 32
Paul is clearing up in the kitchen, while Jane, Nicolette and Aaron have taken to the sofas. Brent comes back in, and asks Aaron if David and Emmett are back with dessert yet. Aaron tells him that David takes his time over choosing ice-cream. In the meantime, Aaron suggests they firm up a plan for tomorrow for Brent, as he'll get bored playing video games all day.
JANE: I was actually hoping to get together with Brent and have a bit of a chat at some stage.
BRENT: ... About what?
JANE: Well, you know! Life, the universe... Well, education. You know I'm a teacher?
BRENT: Yeah. And you already know I dropped out of school.
JANE: Well, it doesn't mean that it's too late to go back. Or to try TAFE.
BRENT: Look, I'm cool, alright? Just call me when the ice-cream's here.
Brent walks out.
Later on, at night, Nicolette is getting some water in the kitchen, when she hears the front door closing, and Brent comes in, looking rattled.
NICOLETTE: Oh, you scared me. What are you doing?
BRENT: Nothing.
NICOLETTE: Was that you at the front door?
BRENT: Yeah, I was just... looking at the moon.
Nicolette looks suspicious, but doesn't question him further, and heads to bed. We then see Brent checking the back door to make sure it's locked...
Harold's Café
The next day, Shane is moaning to Amy that Dipi never called him back. Amy, who's now getting insecure as a result of her own meddling, asks if it's such a bad thing if Dipi was with Pierce.
AMY: You guys aren't together anymore. You're with me.
SHANE: Why don't we just change the subject?
AMY: Are you jealous?
SHANE: No. No, I just don't like the guy. But you're right - what Dipi does or doesn't do is none of my business. You are.
They're just moving in for a kiss, when Dipi comes through the door with her suitcase.
DIPI: Hey.
SHANE: Dip. Hey.
Shortly afterwards, Dipi explains that Jay settled in at her parents' faster than she thought, so she decided she'd come home early so as not to crowd them. She explains she was 'running late' last night which was why she couldn't talk to Shane on the phone. Shane gets a call from one of his friends from Narcotics Anonymous, and goes to take it.
While he's gone, Amy quizzes Dipi about her dinner last night, asking if it was with anyone special.
DIPI: With my sister and her husband, so I suppose so.
Amy tries to ask whether Dipi caught up with anyone else, but Dipi cuts her off, telling her she doesn't have to try so hard to be nice.
DIPI: I've accepted that you and Shane are dating (...) and whilst I don't plan to get into an argument with you any time soon, we don't have to be friends either.
AMY: ... Fair enough.
Amy looks worried as Dipi walks off.
No 32
Brent is brushing his hair in the bathroom, while Nicolette frantically bangs on the door, desperate for the toilet.
NICOLETTE: Pregnant woman says now!
Brent grudgingly lets her in, but she's hugely unimpressed at the state of the bathroom again, with wet towels and junk everywhere - and she reminds him about their earlier conversation, telling him the place looks like an army of wild ducks has moved in.
BRENT: Alright. David and Aaron don't care!
NICOLETTE: That's because they're going easy on you till you get settled in, but don't take advantage of that, okay? You need to clean this up, now!
BRENT: But I thought you just said you were desperate to go? Look, I don't want to be responsible for a pregnant bladder accident, now, do I?
He walks out, and Nicolette looks peeved, before rushing to the toilet.
Harold's Café
Ned and Yashvi are chatting to Dipi at the counter. Yashvi wants to catch up with Dipi over a wine later; Dipi agrees, saying she'll tell her all about how intense Amy was before. Ned encourages Yashvi to own up to spending time with Amy while Dipi was away, so she does. Yashvi protests she didn't want to initially, but Dipi says it's okay; she saw the social media post about it.
DIPI: I understand (...) Just because I'm not a fan of her, doesn't mean I want to make things tricky for you. Or your dad.
YASHVI: Thanks, Mum.
As Ned and Yashvi go outside, Shane and Amy go to the counter. Dipi's phone is on the side, and starts ringing - Pierce's name flashes up on the screen. Shane looks angry, and Dipi surprised.
DIPI: Pierce? What does he want?
SHANE (annoyed): Guess there's only one way to find out.
Amy looks apprehensive as Dipi answers the call.
No 32
Brent is with Jane, Aaron and David. Jane apologises for ambushing Brent with talk of TAFE yesterday, but tells him that getting an education would open so many doors for him. Brent looks unenthused, and even less so when Aaron tells him that Hendrix is already repeating Year 12.
BRENT: That rich kid? He has money, and I don't. Jane, I fail everything. Just a massive waste of time for all of you (...) I'm going for a swim.
Brent walks out, and Jane is understanding, saying to David and Aaron that she knows he finds it all very confronting. But she says she'd like to keep trying with Brent, and the boys agree, thanking her for her help. The boys prepare to head out for their run together.
AARON: Ready to eat my dust?
DAVID (unenthusiastic): No, but let's do it anyway.
Nicolette comes in, and starts moaning to Jane that Brent should be cleaning the bathroom.
JANE: I don't think chores are high on his agenda at the moment.
NICOLETTE: Well, they should be. Because when Aaron and David took him in, they talked to him about showing respect - and he treats this house like it's a tip.
JANE: Try to be more understanding. He's been through a lot. Especially with what happened to him when he was sleeping rough. He's feeling scared and upset. Really, showing him a little bit of kindness isn't much to ask.
NICOLETTE: Okay.
Harold's Café
Toadie has come in, just as Dipi emerges from the kitchen and angrily approaches Amy and Shane.
DIPI (to Amy): Why did you ask Pierce to call me?!
AMY (sheepish): I'm sorry. I did ask him not to mention me.
SHANE: What is going on? Why did you call him?
DIPI: You told Pierce I wanted to contact him but I was unsure if I should!
TOADIE: That's not true, is it?
DIPI: Of course it's not! I haven't contacted him since he left Melbourne, and I haven't wanted to!
Everyone looks to Amy for an explanation.
AMY (to Shane): Look, you were so focused on the fact that Dipi didn't call you back. And then you recycled that poem that you wrote for her. And I just turned into this insecure monster, so -
SHANE: You decided to mess with us.
AMY: No. I wasn't trying to mess with anyone. It's just, I wanted you... I just thought, if Dipi saw Pierce, then you would feel like she was moving on with her life, and that you could move on with yours, too. With me.
SHANE: I can't deal with this.
Shane gets up and leaves, and Amy rushes after him. Dipi looks rather satisfied.
The Waterhole
Aaron and David have stopped off for a drink in The Waterhole, when Paul and Jane turn up. Conversation moves to Brent; Jane wants to get in touch with the principal at his previous school, to get access to his academic records, as they may not be as bad as Brent thinks. David and Aaron think this is a good idea, and leave. Once they've gone, Paul tells Jane...
PAUL: What you're doing is really nice, but honestly, I wouldn't waste too much energy on that boy.
JANE: Well, a phone call isn't exactly a stretch.
PAUL: Yeah, sure, but you're not exactly gonna be able to monitor him long-term, are you? This is a temporary arrangement. Very temporary, judging by Nicolette's attitude towards him at dinner.
JANE: Well, we're all trying our best to be patient with him.
PAUL: Uh, patience isn't something that strikes me as being in Nicolette's wheelhouse.
JANE: I thought you wanted to catch up for coffee.
PAUL: Yeah, I do.
JANE: Well, if this is just an excuse to badmouth her, or to sniff out something that you can use against her, you're wasting your time. I know you and Nicolette aren't each other's greatest fans, but she has a big heart. Which is something you would know, if you were interested in looking.
PAUL: Alright, fair enough. You do know her better than me, so...
Jane looks displeased.
Harold's Café
Dipi, Yashvi and Ned come in, and Toadie joins them from the bathroom. Ned is really surprised to learn of Amy calling Pierce.
TOADIE: I wish I was. I've known Amy for a very long time, and she has form, but, umm... she's crossed the line on this one.
No 30
Amy follows Shane into the sun room, apologising for her actions.
AMY: I'm, like, beyond sorry. I know that it looks bad; it was bad. But I was just trying to fight for us.
SHANE: By calling the guy my wife had an affair with, and tricking him into contacting her?
AMY: I know. It looks really intense and manipulative, and everything. But it's not that, it's... I just, I like you so much. And I really think that we have the potential to be amazing together.
Harold's Café
The conversation continues; Yashvi can't believe Amy didn't think this would come back to bite her.
TOADIE: I'm not sure there was a great deal of thinking going on.
DIPI: I do not understand what your dad sees in her.
No 30
Amy explains to Shane how she feels like nobody in his family is on her side. Shane replies that she's been getting on better with Yashvi, and has been mates with Toadie for twenty years.
AMY: Yashvi is great for giving me a chance. But Toadie is, like, die-hard Team Dipi.
SHANE: What?
AMY: He basically told me to step aside so that you guys could get back together.
Harold's Café
Dipi remarks that Shane seemed cut up when he left before; Yashvi can't see how things are going to go well between him and Amy now.
No 30
Amy reminds Shane that his marriage broke up for very good reasons, which had nothing to do with Amy - and yet Toadie still thinks she's not right for him.
AMY (tearful): And then I go and do something to prove it. I was just trying so hard not to lose you. But that's exactly what I did.
Shane looks conflicted.
No 32
Nicolette enters the bathroom while on the phone to Jane, and finds it once again strewn with Brent's clothes and towels.
NICOLETTE: Are you kidding?!
Nicolette tells Jane about the mess, and the toothpaste on the basin.
NICOLETTE: Yes, I know - patience (!)
She hangs up, and begins to clear up Brent's mess again - but when she picks up his jeans, a razor blade falls out of them. Nicolette picks it up, and looks worried.
No 30
Toadie and Dipi find Shane sitting alone in the sun room. Toadie says it's probably best that what Amy did came out now, and Dipi says she just wanted to make sure Shane was okay. Evidently, both expected him to break up with Amy - but at this point, a still tearful Amy returns to the room.
AMY: He's better than okay. He is amazing. Dipi, I am so sorry. There's no excuse.
Amy's still tearful, but explains they are 'happy tears'.
AMY: Can you believe that he's forgiven me?
DIPI (shocked): You have?
SHANE: Yeah, we're gonna work through it.
Dipi looks peeved, and leaves.
AMY: Some people are gonna need a little more time, I guess.
SHANE (bitter): You got anything you want to get off your chest there, Toad?
Amy leaves to let them talk.
TOADIE: I'm a little confused, to be honest. I mean, what she did was pretty full on.
SHANE: It was, yeah. She's definitely not perfect, but then again, neither am I. You know, I was always so aware of that with Dipi. I mean, she might've been the one to blow things up at the end, but I was the failure, stuffing up all the way along.
TOADIE: You weren't a failure!
SHANE: I think I was. Or at least, I felt that way. But I don't feel that way with Amy. So, Toad, I don't need you weighing in, and I definitely don't need you telling Amy that you'd prefer that Dipi and me got back together.
TOADIE: Yeah, well, I guess I'm just worried that you jumped the gun, that's all.
SHANE: I jumped nothing. Dipi's made it crystal clear that we're not an option. Amy isn't some second prize. I don't need you saying things like that to her; it's just made her more insecure.
TOADIE: Yeah. No, that's fair enough, I get that.
SHANE: Good. Because if you can't get behind this, then you need to stay the hell out of it.
Lassiter's Complex
Nicolette accosts Brent outside the café. She shows him the razor blade that she found in his pocket.
NICOLETTE: Cleaning up after yourself's looking a little more worthwhile now, isn't it?
BRENT: It's just a razor. No big deal.
NICOLETTE: Not good enough.
BRENT: Okay. I got it after I was... beaten and robbed. But I haven't used it or anything; it's just for my protection.
NICOLETTE: But you don't need it anymore. You're safe with us.
BRENT: You reckon? I mean, you all went to bed last night with the back door locked and the windows open.
NICOLETTE: Is that what you were doing? Securing the house?
BRENT: Yeah.
NICOLETTE: Aaron and David are not gonna let anything happen to you. And neither am I. Or Mum.
BRENT: No, please don't tell the boys about the razor.
NICOLETTE: ... I can't lie.
BRENT: Look, you don't have to. Just... don't bring it up. Oh, please, Nicolette, alright? I can't get kicked out.
As they continue to talk, we see Paul gazing at them from within the hotel lobby. He sees Brent looking around furtively, and then Nicolette giving him the razor blade...
