Number 28
Finn is in the lounge room recording another diary entry on his phone. He figures if he stays calm and doesn't go near Elly, then he can control everything.
FINN: I like my life. I like who I am. I don't want to lose it.
There's a knock at the door and Harlow lets herself in. Finn quickly hides his phone under a couch cushion. Harlow's distressed because of Prue's imminent return and thought Finn would be good to talk to because of his recent issues with his dad. Finn tells her to take a seat so they can chat, but he can't help looking perturbed.
Number 32
Kyle is in the kitchen while Paul and David chat on the couch. Paul tells David he's never been to Mardi Gras before - he thinks he should try and attend one year.
DAVID: You know you're welcome to come join us on the float.
KYLE: (laughing) All glittered up shaking his wooden leg! I'd pay to see that!
Ignoring Kyle, Paul asks when David and Aaron are leaving. David says tomorrow morning - he's excited but nervous. Kyle doesn't get why, but David isn't comfortable with the thought of so many people staring at him. Kyle tells him not to worry and just have fun, while Paul reminds him to take lots of photos and tag Lassiters in them.
PAUL: You just have to be on your best behaviour while you're on the float.
DAVID: We will be. Although I can't guarantee what'll happen later. Apparently the after parties can be a bit wild.
KYLE: Yeah, just like Aaron's outfits.
Elly waltzes in, stoked that Aster's finally asleep. She tries on the boys' Mardi Gras outfits with Kyle, while Paul gives David a hug and wishes him luck for the parade. Before he leaves, Paul receives a phone call from Terese who is worried about Harlow.
Number 28
Finn thinks it's good that Gary has helped Prue leave The Order, but Harlow doesn't understand why her mum listened to Gary and not her. Finn says that maybe Prue just needed some help, but Harlow says her mum isn't weak, "just selfish".
HARLOW: When all this stuff happened with my dad I emailed her. I really needed her and she didn't respond.
FINN: I found some stuff out about my dad after he left too. He let me down.
HARLOW: How did you deal with it?
FINN: I haven't. Honestly I just tried not to think about it or talk about it too much. The thing is, Harlow, I don't think it's a good idea to make big decisions when you're upset. You might say or do something you'll regret.
HARLOW: Yeah, I just don't think she deserves another chance.
FINN: Maybe not, but I'd sleep on it. Give it a few days.
Another knock at the door heralds the arrival of Paul. He's relieved to find Harlow after Finn convinced her to text her grandfather. Paul has sympathy for Harlow but says they should head home. Harlow hopes she hasn't upset Finn by talking about his dad, but Finn says he's fine. When they leave, though, he looks conflicted.
Lassiters Complex
The next morning Bea and Elly are relaxing out the front of the hotel after yoga. Bea says next time they should take Aster out to the marina for a spin around the bay.
ELLY: Yeah, all except one little problem - we don't have a boat!
BEA: Well we can hire one. And I have my boat licence still from when I helped dad back in Broome with the tours.
ELLY: Okay, but we can't go out too far. I'd be really nervous with the bubby.
Bea promises two hours max as Karl appears with a shopping bag. He's picked up a bargain for Elly - a breathing/sleeping pad for Aster's crib. On sale of course. Bea asks what it does and Elly explains that if the baby stops breathing then the pad sends a signal for the alarm to go off. Karl offers to install it for Elly but she says she'll get Kyle to do it.
Over by the hotel entrance there's a big 'Everybody is welcome at Lassiters Hotel' sign with a rainbow over the hotel logo. Lucy chats with David about Mardi Gras and says she's heard over 300,000 people will attend the parade. David tries not to freak out. Lucy reminds him about the Lassiters hashtag for social media then says she's organised a room upgrade at Lassiters Sydney for the boys tonight.
DAVID: You know there's a lot to be said for nepotism.
LUCY: (grinning) What are families for?
Lucy heads towards Elly and Bea and introduces herself. She says she's heard a lot about Bea's singing talents and wondered if she'd like to be the wedding singer at the expo. Bea's thrilled and says she'd be happy to take part.
The Waterhole
Gary tells Kyle that Harlow isn't happy about Prue coming back, but Kyle can understand why. What Kyle doesn't get is why Gary is so invested in Prue and Harlow's relationship. Gary brushes off Kyle's questions, but he looks around the bar and is concerned to see Harlow and Finn sharing a table. He asks Kyle what he thinks is going on and Kyle replies that Finn's her tutor. This doesn't sit well with Gary - especially when he sees Finn place a hand on Harlow's arm while he talks with her. Harlow is still stressing about Prue so Finn talks her through a quick meditative breathing exercise.
FINN: I'm always here to talk, whenever you need. You're very special, Harlow. Don't forget that.
Harold's Café
Gary collects his coffee and is giddy to see Mark Gottlieb sitting at a table. He goes over and asks if Mark was ever on the telly, to which Mark replies "a long time ago."
GARY: You were in that cooking show, right?
MARK: Yep that's right.
GARY: Yeah! Mark! Mark Gottlieb!
MARK: That's me.
GARY: Fit Fun Food! That show was a ripper. I used to watch it all the time when I was in prison!
Mark suddenly becomes very uncomfortable.
GARY: You actually inspired me to become a cook. I run The 82, it's the tram with a restaurant in it. You should come down for a free feed some time! Mate's rates.
He then tries to get a selfie but Mark quickly bolts up from his chair and stammers that they'll save it until he comes to visit the tram. Gary leaves and Lucy arrives, immediately transfixed by Mark at the counter. She tentatively asks if he's Mark Gottlieb. They both break into grins when they realise who they've magically bumped into.
Number 26
Gary has called Harlow over to give her Prue's flight details. Harlow isn't interested, and says Prue will be sadly disappointed if she's expecting a big, loving reunion. Gary then asks Harlow to stay and chat. Not about her mum, but about Finn. He asks if Finn knows what's going on in her family life and Harlow says yes. She adds that she asked Finn about how to handle rejection and parental neglect.
GARY: I thought he was just your tutor?
HARLOW: Yeah, but I mean he's been through this kind of stuff before. So if anybody knows the right thing to do, it's him.
Gary nods and smiles to disguise the fact that he's just bursting to say otherwise.
Harold's Café
Mark tells Lucy he's been back in Melbourne for a few years and has run a few restaurants around town. Lucy says she's heard on the grapevine how good they are but has been so busy with work she hasn't had a chance to try them.
LUCY: So you became a celebrity chef. What ever happened to priesthood?
MARK: I never made it in the end. With or without you, Lucy, it just wasn't for me. Did you ever marry? Have kids?
LUCY: I'm happily single with a daughter, Annie. She's five now.
MARK: And the dad?
LUCY: Oh, Annie's an IUI baby. Intrauterine Insemination courtesy of my dear friend, Chris. We co-parent.
MARK: Wow! Sounds like you've got your life in order.
Lucy doesn't answer. Instead she asks what brings Mark back to Erinsborough. Mark says he came to see a friend who needed his help, but he's also loved all the nostalgia the trip has brought.
LUCY: I'm happy to have another coffee if you want to keep taking a walk down memory lane?
MARK: Well you stay right there, m'lady. My shout.
Lucy smiles and laughs as Mark heads to the counter.
Number 28
Karl is 'helping' Bea with potential songs for the expo by suggesting ones with love in the title. All You Need Is Love, Endless Love...
KARL: Whitney Houston's, 'I Will Always Love You'.
BEA: Hey you know Dolly Parton actually wrote that song.
KARL: (chuckling) You millennials, you've got so much to learn.
He pops some headphones on to listen to the music. Finn arrives home and Bea tells him about her wedding singer gig. Finn's happy for Bea and says he'll be there to support her. While Karl and Bea continue to go through songs, Finn gets a call from his dad. He chooses to ignore it.
Harold's Café
Lucy tells Mark that it's been great catching up and Mark agrees. They share a hug while Paul looks on from the doorway intrigued. Mark exits and Paul approaches his sister, asking who the guy was.
LUCY: You wouldn't believe it. It's Mark Gottlieb, my ex!
PAUL: No, hang on; I thought he joined the priesthood?
LUCY: No he became a chef instead. He's a successful restaurateur.
PAUL: (sly) And was that a little moment I saw between you two there?
LUCY: Don't be ridiculous. We haven't seen one another for years.
Gary all of a sudden rushes in and drags Paul away from Lucy, much to Paul's disgust. But Gary's really worried about Harlow hanging around Finn. Lucy eavesdrops in the background.
GARY: Are you and Terese really okay about him tutoring her?
PAUL: He wouldn't be doing it if we weren't.
GARY: Yeah well what about his history with Xanthe?
PAUL: It's exactly that, Gary. It's history. The man has a job and a steady relationship with Bea.
GARY: So he's working at the Foundation and living at the Kennedys with Bea, that's all well and good. But that doesn't mean that we should trust him around teenage girls.
PAUL: Harlow is my granddaughter and her welfare is none of your business.
Lucy looks concerned at this information she's just learnt.
Ramsay Street
Karl runs out to find Bea and tell her he's had a brilliant idea. They can duet at the wedding expo! Before Bea can find a polite way to say no, Lucy approaches them to give Bea her contract. When Karl brings up the duet idea, Lucy says that "sadly" there's only room for one wedding singer. Karl despondently heads back inside.
BEA: Thank you for being diplomatic.
LUCY: Karl doesn't really project the right image for us. And perception is everything when it comes to an event like this.
BEA: Yeah, of course.
LUCY: On that subject, I hope you understand that we can't have your boyfriend Finn on the premises while you're performing. In fact, he can't be at the expo at all.
BEA: Why not?
LUCY: Lassiter's image has taken a real beating over this camera scandal thing and the litigation.
BEA: Yeah but that's got nothing to do with Finn.
LUCY: Well even so, the hotel can't be associated with a man of his reputation.
BEA: He hasn't got a reputation. Ever since he woke up from his coma he's done nothing but good.
LUCY: Sorry. We just can't afford any more bad publicity.
Lucy walks away. Bea is rattled.
Number 32
Elly folds laundry while Gary helps Kyle bring the crib into the kitchen/dining area. Gary doesn't get why no one else seems concerned about Finn tutoring Harlow. All he could think about was what happened to Xanthe. Elly says she wouldn't have recommended Finn if she thought there'd be any issues, and Kyle still doesn't get why Gary's sticking his nose in.
GARY: I told you, I'm scared history is going to repeat itself.
ELLY: Finn isn't the same person he used to be.
GARY: Yeah so everyone keeps saying, but I've really got to look out for Harlow until Prue gets here.
Kyle says he'd be more worried about what Prue's going to do to Harlow, not Finn. Gary gets narky about the comparison, so Elly interrupts their bickering to ask if she can help with the baby alarm. Kyle says no, he'll get it done in a jiffy.
The Waterhole
Bea is distracted but doesn't want to tell Finn what's going on. Lucy walks past them and Finn asks Bea who she is. When Bea explains, Finn wonders if she's been given her contract yet. Bea says she turned down the gig. She lies about her reasons, telling Finn she doesn't want to be pigeonholed as a wedding singer. But Finn keeps asking questions so Bea eventually explains that Lucy doesn't want him at the expo.
FINN: You turned it down because of me?
BEA: After everything you've done to make amends, I just don't think it's fair.
FINN: I don't want to ruin this opportunity for you, Bea.
BEA: No you haven't! This is my choice.
FINN: Tell her you'll do the gig. I'll stay away.
BEA: No. How long are you going to be punished for what you did? You support me, I support you. We're a team. And I'm not going to let anybody treat you like that.
Finn smiles at Bea then casts an angry glare Lucy's way.
Number 28/Number 32 Backyard
Finn's in an irate mood as he tells Karl about Bea giving up her gig. Karl says he's sorry to hear Finn's been banned, and he's sorry for Bea as well. Finn states that Bea shouldn't have to choose between her boyfriend and her career. Karl replies that Lucy is always going to put Lassiters first.
FINN: Maybe if I talk to her?
KARL: No. Not a good idea in your state of mind. It might make things worse for Bea.
Karl answers his phone to Elly, who is outside #32 rocking a crying Aster. The baby's upset because the sensor alarm on the sleeping pad won't stop beeping. Elly asks him to come over and fix it because Kyle's not home. Karl says he will, but when he hangs up he asks Finn to go sort it out, as he has to go to the hospital. Finn's startled, saying he doesn't know the first thing about alarms. But Karl brushes off his concern and says he'll figure it out.
The Waterhole
Paul and Harlow like all the Mardi Gras decorations that have been put around the pub. Lucy joins them and says Terese and Chloe have outdone themselves. Her face lights up when Mark walks in and makes a beeline for her. They sit at the bar together and Lucy invites him to watch the Mardi Gras parade with her later. She then asks Mark if he'd be interested in catering the wedding expo and Mark gladly accepts.
Number 32
Elly is trying to shut the alarm off when Finn rushes in with a toolbox. She asks where Karl is and Finn says he had to go to work. Elly goes to check on Aster in her room while Finn tries to make sense of the alarm. But all of a sudden, the incessant beeping takes on a warped effect and Finn looks woozy and confused. Sounds and images start to flood back into his mind as he stumbles over to the couch to sit. Finn looks dazed as everything hits him at once - memories of Susan pushing him off the cliff, his time as Patrick, Elly pushing him down the stairs, hitting Xanthe with a car, locking the girls in a shipping container and sound bites from his kidnapping in Colombia. Elly appears in the background asking why Finn can't turn the alarm off, but he doesn't answer, too overwhelmed to respond.
