Ramsay Street
In the aftermath of Clementine's accident, Hendrix is desperate to call somebody - but Terese tells him there's nothing they can do; Clementine is dead, and Harlow is wracked with guilt. Roxy turns up, wondering what's going on.
ROXY: Harls, what've you done now, you speed demon? Did you hit a pot-plant?
Roxy then sees the dead cat.
ROXY: What happened? Who did this?
HENDRIX: She did. (To Harlow) You killed Clementine!
The Waterhole
Paul is on the phone to Terese, who's telling him about the cat. Paul tells Terese to give Harlow a big hug for him, then finishes up the call and sits down with Lucy for a drink.
LUCY: I remember how I felt when my terrier Basil drowned.
PAUL: Oh, I remember little Basil!
Chloe turns up, and tells Lucy she's sent a report to her.
LUCY (unimpressed): Yeah, I saw it. Can you resend it as a PDF?
CHLOE: ... Will do!
Chloe adds that she's dealt with the plumbing issue, and been in touch with Princess Mary's people asking for confirmation on the dress by tomorrow. Lucy isn't convinced that applying pressure is the way to play it (and Paul thinks she should've applied it before spending all the money on prepping for the expo); but Chloe says she's not expecting any issues.
CHLOE: Well - I'm going to go to my office and do some more work. Because I... love my job!
LUCY: Don't forget to resend that report!
Lucy and Paul exchange a glance as Chloe walks off, and Lucy rolls her eyes.
No 22
Roxy, Terese, Harlow and Ned are gathered on the patio, while a grieving Hendrix stands nearby. Harlow apologises to him again, but he doesn't respond.
Terese reports that Piper was upset by the news of Clementine's death, but that she wanted to make sure that Harlow was okay, as she understands that it was an accident.
HENDRIX: Oh, yeah, right (!) You hated Clementine! You saw the chance, and you took it!
HARLOW: I would never deliberately hurt her, Hendrix.
HENDRIX: What, so it just happened to be the first time Little Miss Road Rules didn't check the rear-view mirror?
ROXY: (...) If Harlow wanted to commit cat-murder, she would've been smarter about it.
HENDRIX: Well, making it look like an accident seems pretty smart to me. (To Harlow) Well-played. You win.
Hendrix walks off, and Harlow looks sad.
No 24
Mark, Chloe, Aaron and David are gathered for the family dinner. The pet death on the street has reminded Aaron of the time the family kelpie, Harvey, ran away.
AARON: He just took off one day and never came back, really.
MARK: Umm, mate, I hate to break this to you now - but Harvey ate rabbit bait, and Dad took him to the vet.
AARON: What? Wait, so I spent three months looking for him for nothing?!
In the kitchen, Pierce is talking to Hendrix about Clementine.
PIERCE: I know how much she meant to you, mate. Maybe when the time's right, we can look at getting you another cat.
HENDRIX: I had a cat.
PIERCE: Sorry. I shouldn't have suggested it.
HENDRIX: Doesn't matter. She's gone - end of story.
Pierce asks Hendrix to join them all for dinner, but Hendrix goes to his room to collect Clementine's stuff, so he can throw it out. Meanwhile, Chloe is on her phone.
MARK: Isn't there a no-screens policy at the table?
Chloe's checking to see if Lucy or Princess Mary's people have been in touch, but she grudgingly agrees to wait till after dinner. Pierce joins the others, and talks about how Hendrix was attached to the cat.
MARK: I wish I'd have known.
PIERCE: Why?
MARK: I thought she'd snuck in earlier, so I kind of let her back out into the street.
Hendrix is just emerging from his room, and overhears this.
HENDRIX: What? So it was your fault, too? What, did the whole street just hate her? You know, if you'd let her stay, she might still be alive!
MARK: ... I'm sorry.
But Hendrix walks out again.
No 22
Paul has arrived home and is consoling a guilty-looking Harlow about running over the cat.
PAUL: Probably the best thing you can do right now is have another driving lesson.
NED: Get back on the horse.
HARLOW: What, as opposed to driving over it?
There's a knock at the door and Ned goes to get it. It's Mark.
MARK: (To Ned) Relax, I'm not here to see you!
Mark has just come round to apologise to Terese for letting Clementine into the road. Terese tells him not to worry; the cat always went where she pleased.
MARK: Hendrix seems to think it's a street-wide conspiracy.
PAUL (to Harlow): See? He hates Mark as well as you.
Terese asks Mark if he could give a talk to the Buddy Club kids tomorrow, on the dangers of guns, following the recent incident. Mark says he does have a general talk he gives to schools, so would be happy to. Paul says it will make good PR for the Sonya foundation. At this point, Roxy comes rushing downstairs in only a bath-towel and hugs Mark.
ROXY: I knew I heard that voice! Hello, stranger!
Roxy wants to know why Mark hasn't come to see her yet since being back.
MARK: I've been busy dealing with idiots.
NED: (raises a hand)
But Mark says he'd love to catch up with Roxy, who looks pleased.
Lassiter's
The next day, Lucy, Paul, Chloe and Pierce are having a meeting in the office. Lucy's gone over Chloe's report and says it's very thorough...
LUCY: ... so I actually know how much trouble we're in. Bookings and customer satisfaction are miles from our targets.
PIERCE: Yeah, well, those targets were unrealistic given the state of things. I think what Chloe's achieved is remarkable, considering.
LUCY: Says her husband.
What's more, says Lucy, the costs of the wedding expo are spiralling out of control. Pierce continues to try to defend Chloe, highlighting all the effort she's put into the expo. But Lucy's dismissive, and goes to do a tour of the hotel and talk to the staff. Chloe offers to come with her, but Lucy only wants Paul to accompany.
LUCY: Text me when Princess Mary's people confirm.
Once Lucy's gone, Pierce tells Chloe that Lucy will come round, and that Chloe needs to speak up for herself more. At this point, there's more bad news as Chloe gets a message.
CHLOE: It's Princess Mary's people. I'm not getting the dress.
Ramsay Street
Hendrix is out jogging, when he sees Harlow standing in the driveway to No 22, next to the car.
HENDRIX: Reliving happy memories?
HARLOW: Hendrix, there's nothing happy about this - I feel terrible!
HENDRIX: Well, Clementine feels worse!
HARLOW: I'm sorry, but It was an accident! I would never hurt her on purpose.
HENDRIX: No, no, of course not. Kill her, on the other hand? Yeah.
Hendrix jogs off, and Finn turns up, wanting to know why Harlow cancelled her study session. Harlow admits it's about Clementine; Hendrix hates her.
FINN: He's just lashing out; he's not thinking clearly. It'll pass.
HARLOW: I just wish there was something I could do.
FINN: When Shaun died, Bea did this thing to help me - maybe it'd help you too...
Lassiter's
Chloe is in full-blown panic mode over the collapse of the dress negotiations.
CHLOE: I am the stuffing in 'stuffed'!
Pierce assures her they can absorb the costs she's already accrued, and find a new centrepiece for the expo. They can present their alternative options to Lucy and fix this together. But Chloe thinks Lucy's going to freak.
CHLOE: Paul's gonna be in her ear even louder now.
PIERCE: Worrying about that isn't gonna fix anything. Ideas will. So let's get started.
Harold's Café
Toadie and Terese are watching from a distance while Mark delivers his talk on gun safety to the Buddy Club kids, and remark on how good he's being with them. Paul and Lucy come in; Lucy's impressed at Terese showing the initiative of arranging a police talk for the kids. Toadie tells Lucy that Terese even got the West Waratah Star to cover it as a good-news story on their front page.
LUCY: Your wife is very clever, turning a gun disaster into a positive PR.
PAUL: I don't know why you're so surprised, Luce. She did that running Lassiter's every week.
LUCY: Except for that whole camera thing.
PAUL: Yeah, well, she has learned from those mistakes.
LUCY: Hmm. And so might Chloe.
PAUL: Terese has a much better career average. The hotel has never had a better manager.
Lucy gazes over at Terese, looking thoughtful.
No 24
Harlow comes to see Hendrix, who's still frosty with her.
HARLOW: Look, I'm holding a memorial for Clementine later today. I asked Piper what she wanted, and she said she wanted Clementine to be buried at home.
HENDRIX: Fertiliser for your dad's plant!
HARLOW: I really want you to come.
HENDRIX: Yeah, well, I'm busy.
HARLOW: Doing what?
HENDRIX: Something I haven't thought of yet.
HARLOW: It wouldn't be the same without you, Hendrix. I mean, no-one loved Clementine as much as you did.
He's still unpersuaded, so Harlow opens the door to reveal Roxy, who's come over as backup.
ROXY: Clementine deserves a decent send-off. She belonged to you in every which way that counts. You owe it to her to say goodbye. I think you'll regret it if you don't.
Lassiter's
An increasingly impatient Lucy has dropped by the office with Paul at Chloe's request. Chloe and Pierce have come up with a list of alternatives for the wedding expo, but Lucy's concerned about the budget, and Paul thinks they should cut their losses and drop the whole thing.
CHLOE: I think we can turn it around.
PAUL: Oh, you want to throw more good money at this, do you, Chloe?! I think we've wasted enough time on it already.
LUCY: I could look at her shortlist!
But Paul insists they need to move on. Chloe stands up and shouts at him.
CHLOE: You've been against me on this from day one!
PAUL: Yes, I have! Because it's been a bad idea since day one!
CHLOE: You could've supported me, but no - all you want to do is throw obstacles in my way!
PAUL: Chloe, do not blame me for your incompetence! Now, you took a gamble on something that you weren't sure of, it fell over, and now we are stuck with the bill!
CHLOE: How am I supposed to succeed if you keep undermining me?
PAUL: I am trying to protect my investment! Now, it's not my fault that you can't handle this, although you continually said that you could. You know, the only reason you're here is because of who you're married to! Yeah. You are out of your depth, and this hotel is sinking further and further each day because of it.
CHLOE: You're a snake, Paul. A pathetic, sad little man, with no morals, no friends, and no clue!
Unimpressed with the squabbling, Lucy says she'll look at the list of ideas and be in touch. Paul smirks at Chloe, knowing her outburst has done nothing to impress Lucy. Chloe sinks into her chair, looking worried.
CHLOE (to Pierce): You don't need to say it.
The Waterhole
Toadie is telling Terese about the great feedback he's had about the Buddy Club police talk today. Terese says Mark should take the credit, but Toadie tells her not to be so modest.
TERESE: I love my job. And it's nice to make a difference for people who need it. There are no boards, or demanding customers (...) no midnight emergencies, and calls to New York. It's nice to have some time to get some regular exercise in, and spend time with my family.
Terese gets a message on her phone, reminding her she's late for Clementine's memorial, and rushes off home. Meanwhile at another table, David is angsting to Aaron and Mark about whether the Lassiter's Mardi Gras float will be ready.
AARON: Hey, your dad has built million-dollar real estate developments - I'm pretty sure he can organise a float.
DAVID: But I haven't had to dance on the real estate developments!
A forlorn-looking Chloe turns up, and tells them about the collapse of the wedding expo, her career, and 'my entire sense of self-worth'.
No 22
Terese, Roxy, Hendrix, Harlow and a sunglasses-clad Ned are gathered for Clementine's memorial. The cat herself is in a cardboard box lined with flowers.
HARLOW: We're gathered here today to remember our family member and friend, Clementine Willis. Terese, you wanted to say something first?
TERESE: Well, it took me a while to warm to Clementine. She wasn't very good with personal space; and she did eat a few of Gary's pigeons. But she was a good listener. She was the first one I told that I had cancer. And she became part of the family - and I'll miss her.
HARLOW: Ned - Piper asked you to say something.
NED: Uh, she wanted me to put this in with her.
He puts a copy of Clementine Ford's 'Fight Like A Girl' on top of the cardboard box.
NED: Keep cat-heaven free of toxic masculinity, Clem.
HARLOW: Anyone else want to say anything?
A very emotional Hendrix starts to speak.
HENDRIX: You were always there, when everyone else hated me. I didn't feel bad about my mistakes with you. No judgement, no lectures - just mates. I'm gonna miss that. I'm gonna miss you.
Ned reaches a finger under his sunglasses to wipe his eye!
HARLOW: I want to say something, too. I never really had an easy relationship with Clementine - and unlike with Terese, it never really got better with time. But I know how much love you brought into so many people's lives. And I will forever be sorry for taking that away. Life has to end, but... love doesn't. Godspeed, Clementine.
Holding back the tears, Hendrix looks moved by her words.
The Waterhole
Roxy turns up and finds Mark and Ned at opposite ends of the bar. Roxy says Mark never got back to her about their catch-up, so he suggests doing it now. Roxy agrees, and Mark goes to find them a table while she fetches some drinks.
NED: Please don't tell me you're reheating *those* leftovers!
ROXY: What? Ned, please - we're friends.
NED: It sounded like you wanted to add some benefits. Come on, you were flirting with him.
ROXY: I flirt with everyone.
NED: He's not everyone; he's your ex.
ROXY: There is no chance. I have sworn off men post-Shane 'Regretti'.
NED: Probably smart. You were pretty into Mark when he left, though.
ROXY: I can be friends with my exes.
NED: I'll believe it when I see it.
ROXY: Yeah, well, sit back and watch.
Ramsay Street
Harlow and Hendrix are coming out of No 22 following the memorial.
HENDRIX: Thanks for that. Even if you did use emotional blackmail to get me there.
HARLOW: (...) Did it help?
HENDRIX: Yeah. Your speech did. I know you cared for Clementine in your own, weird, Harlowy way.
HARLOW: Well, Weird Harlow got you a present. Clementine's toy.
For a moment, Hendrix thinks she means the toy he took from Karl and Susan's Blue Box™ and pretended was Clementine's! But this is a real one; Pierce told Harlow that Hendrix threw it away, so she went through the bin to retrieve it.
HARLOW: Well, I was going to bury it with her. But after today, I thought you could use it as a memento.
HENDRIX: Just when I think I've got you figured out, you ransack a bin for a cat toy... Hey, sorry for giving you a hard time about the accident.
HARLOW: I was the driver.
HENDRIX: Yeah, but I was the one chasing her. I know you would never do something like that on purpose. You're a good person - one of the best I know.
HARLOW: Well, now that Clementine's gone - if you ever want anybody to talk to... I mean, it probably won't be the same, but -
HENDRIX: Yeah. That could be alright.
HARLOW: Look, I know you care about people deep down. Why are you so afraid to let them know it?
Hendrix doesn't answer, as the question develops into a Moment™. He leans in to kiss her, and Harlow seems to be moving in, too - but then she sneezes!
HARLOW: I'm so sorry! It was the toy. I mean, Clementine on the toy. I should go get a tissue.
HENDRIX: It's cool. It's alright. I'll see ya.
Hendrix walks off, just as Finn approaches.
FINN: How did the memorial go? .... Not great?
HARLOW: Uh, no, it was, umm... it was wonderful.
FINN: You okay?
HARLOW (sighs): I have no idea.
But she's smiling.
Harold's Café
Paul and Lucy come in; Paul is bitching about Chloe, and saying she should never have been put on a five-year contract. Lucy points out that there is a probation period built in.
PAUL: Come on, Lucy - you've given the girl enough rope. Surely you've seen first-hand that she's hanging herself.
LUCY: What happens if Pierce pulls his investment?
PAUL: I think I'd rather take that risk over Chloe running the hotel into the ground. Oh, come on - there have always been more qualified candidates than Chloe. And I think Lassiter's deserves the best of who's out there.
LUCY: Would this perfect candidate happen to be married to you, by any chance?
PAUL: Funny you should say that. Oh, come on, Lucy. Terese is the perfect person to turn this around, and you know it.
No 22
Toadie turns up to see Terese; he's bought her a pot-plant from Sonya's nursery as a present.
TERESE: Aww! I'll put it next to Clementine, if that's okay?
Toadie explains the plant is to say thank-you for all Terese's hard work at the foundation.
TOADIE: I'd give you a bonus, but you've seen our budget!
Terese is grateful for the gesture; but as Toadie leaves, Lucy turns up, wanting to talk to Terese.
LUCY: Chloe's not working out.
TERESE: Well, she'll bounce back.
LUCY: We don't have time for a manager on 'L' plates.
TERESE: Lucy, we all need to learn.
LUCY: Yeah, well, she's just gonna have to do that somewhere else, because I'm letting her go.
TERESE: She's gonna be devastated. Can't you give her another chance?
LUCY: I've already got someone else in mind for her job. She's experienced, dedicated, and today, she actually reminded me of what a mistake I made by insisting she resign. I want you running Lassiter's again!
