Lassiter's Complex
Shane tells Dipi it's ridiculous for her to suggest he change his work patterns so as to spend less time with Roxy.
DIPI: The fact you don't know where I'm coming from - that is more than enough reason.
SHANE: Well, I'm not gonna do it.
DIPI: Shane, I am trying to get us back on track - and all you're worried about is spending time with Roxy! What is your priority?
SHANE: There is nothing going on between us!
DIPI: You're not listening to me!
SHANE: You're not making any sense!
DIPI: She's getting you in trouble at work.
SHANE: She's not leading me by the nose - I've got a mind of my own.
DIPI: Yet you drop everything to go and rescue her in a bar late at night.
SHANE: We've talked about - she needed me!
DIPI: You obviously know a lot about her personal life. She confides in you; and you being that close, it makes me feel uncomfortable.
SHANE: Yeah? Well, you're overreacting.
DIPI: The fact that you don't even care how I feel makes me feel so much worse!
SHANE: Dip, you're making a big stink about nothing. I'm not changing shifts just because you've got some crazy jealous bug!
Shane walks off, leaving Dipi frustrated.
No 28
Toadie has come round to see the Kennedys and collect some books Nell has left, prior to his departure with the kids to Colac to provide legal aid to his cousin Dwayne.
SUSAN: Do we need to know what he's done?
TOADIE: No. You don't wanna know.
Toadie remarks how quiet the house is; Karl says it has been since Elly and Aster left. Bea admits she's missing them, and Toadie says he's surprised Elly moved out; he'd have thought she'd have wanted the family's support. Finn looks awkward; and Susan plays it down, saying she goes to see Elly every day.
BEA: It's hardly the same as being here, where we can all pitch in to help when she needs it.
FINN: Elly's just doing what she has to.
KARL: It still doesn't make any sense.
No 32
Elly is on the sofa with Aster, and apologetic to David and Aaron about the mess she's left about the place. They're totally understanding, but...
ELLY: It's like a baby explosion in here. I promised to contain it all to my bedroom.
DAVID: This is your house too. The whole place.
Elly says she's just adjusting to being away from her family. David asks if she's regretting the move, and Aaron assures her they love having her. Elly insists that moving here is the best decision she's ever made.
ELLY: I couldn't ask for more amazing housemates.
The Waterhole
Roxy comes in, with the chips she promised to buy Shane from Grease Monkeys - and Harlow in tow.
ROXY: There may be a few chips missing - Harls got a bit handsy.
Having objected vehemently to this account of events, Harlow heads off to the library. But Shane is clearly now awkward around Roxy, and she's surprised at his lack of interest in the chips.
ROXY: You're knocking back salty goodness when it's my treat?
Roxy concludes from Shane's mood that there's something wrong, and tries to persuade him to share whatever's bothering him - pointing out that he always listens to her problems, and she owes him one after last night. But Shane insists this is something he needs to sort out for himself.
Sheila emerges from the office with the latest staff rosters, and Roxy is surprised to learn that she and Shane don't have any shifts together. Sheila explains that after they forged the responses to the customer satisfaction survey, she's decided to keep them apart. Roxy calls Sheila a 'spoilsport', and Shane looks angry...
No 32
Susan and Karl are visiting Elly and Aster. Aaron jokes about the Kennedys being here so much, and a sensitive Elly suggests to David and Aaron that she could curtail people's visits if it was getting too much. David insists Aaron is only pulling her leg.
DAVID: Besides, I know Karl misses me around the hospital; I'm the real reason he's here!
Karl asks how David's recovery is going; he says he's looking for a new project to fill his time, such as starting a greenhouse in the garden. Karl gets all excited and goes off to talk about it with David and Aaron, leaving Susan and Elly alone to talk. Elly privately admits she's exhausted, but says David and Aaron have been really helpful.
ELLY: I just really miss you, and Bea, and... and Karl. I just have to keep reminding myself why I'm doing this. It's for Bea and, you know, it's the right thing to do.
Susan nods supportively and a little judgementally!
Lassiter's Lake
Dipi is sounding off to Gary about Shane's perceived preoccupation with Roxy. Gary points out that being told he's not listening to Dipi must've got Shane's back up.
DIPI: Gaz, he's just so stubborn. And he's got selective hearing. I dunno, I just got so worked up, that it sort of came out.
GARY: Yeah, well, I get how it could look a bit suss.
DIPI: Could?
GARY: Yeah. But telling him that he can't work with Roxy is pretty full-on.
DIPI: Yeah, maybe. But I just didn't know what else I could do to get it into his head just how uncomfortable I am about the two of them together. And I hate - I *hate* that I've become this nagging wife.
At this point, Shane storms up to them.
SHANE: Dipi, what the hell do you think you're doing? The bar is my workplace!
DIPI: What are you talking about?
SHANE: Don't play the innocent! You went behind my back, and got Sheila to change the rosters so I'm not working with Roxy!
DIPI: No, I didn't!
SHANE: You've crossed the line, Dip.
He storms off again.
Lassiter's Complex
David and Aaron are chatting about Elly; they're feeling bad that she's always asking permission for everything she does about the house. David suggests they throw a housewarming party for her and Aster - just them and Elly's family.
AARON: What, with Finn too?
DAVID: Yeah, he hasn't been over once since she moved in.
AARON: Oh, and that's a bad thing, is it?
DAVID: Boo, he's Aster's uncle!
As they approach the courtyard, they see Bea and Finn sitting outside Harold's, and ask what they're up to later today, explaining about the housewarming idea. Bea says she and Finn will be there, but Finn makes an excuse, saying he has lots to do for the Sonya foundation, so might give it a miss.
BEA: Surely that can wait? It's gonna be two hours - and Aster would be missing you like crazy.
DAVID: It's for Elly. We want you both to be there.
FINN: ... Sure. Count me in.
The Waterhole
Roxy is whingeing to Sheila about the new rosters, and specifically, another member of the bar staff called Tom who she's been paired with.
ROXY: All he babbles on about is Ralph. 'Oh, me and Ralph are going on a trip this weekend! Wait till you hear what me and Ralph did last night! Oh, he's such a sweet ride!'
SHEILA: Firstly, you should be working, and not standing around chatting. Secondly, if he wants to talk about his partner, there are a lot worse things he could be going on about.
ROXY: Ralph's a mountain bike. And don't even get me *started* on Laura.
SHEILA: I won't.
ROXY: She has *nothing* interesting to say. Shane just makes the hours fly by.
SHEILA: It's not gonna happen, Roxy.
At this point, Shane himself comes in, and asks for private word with Sheila. She takes him aside.
SHEILA: Don't you start - I have just had Roxy yapping in my ear.
SHANE: I know Dipi asked you to change the roster. She's completely out of line - it's degrading.
SHEILA: Dipi did not ask. I told you, I was keeping you two apart because of that whole stupid tablet debacle. But now that you've raised it, you should be thanking me. Blind Freddie can see that that girl is causing chaos in your marriage.
SHANE: I just ripped into Dipi about it.
SHEILA: Yeah. I rest my case, see? When it comes to Roxy, you have blinkers on. Here you are complaining about some little, silly roster, when your wife has humiliated herself trying to spark things up for you, and only to give my Gary an eyeful! Have you even stopped to think why she went to so much trouble? (...) She did it because she wanted you two to get back on track. You know, get back into your regular... routine.
SHANE: That is none of your business, Sheila!
SHEILA: Dipi made it my business!
SHANE: (...) I'm not having this conversation with you.
SHEILA: Well, then have it with your wife.
Shane walks off in a huff.
No 32
Finn and Bea have joined Aaron, David and Elly on the patio for the housewarming. Conversation turns to Aster hating getting dressed after she's had a bath.
AARON: We swore we'd never live with another nudist.
DAVID: But she's a whole lot sweeter than Roxy!
Aster is in her pram nearby; Finn hopes she wakes up soon as he's missed having time with her.
BEA: And you say you're too busy to come over and visit?
FINN: Well, I don't want to intrude.
DAVID: Well, you're welcome any time. Right, Elly?
ELLY: ... Yeah, of course.
David mentions Aster crying during the night, and Elly is still feeling sensitive on the topic, apologising to David. He assures her they knew what they were signing up for when she moved in. But Finn's concerned to hear that Aster is still causing Elly sleep deprivation. He decides Aster needs a change, and gets up to do it; Elly follows him indoors to show him where everything is.
Now they're alone...
FINN: You hadn't called, so I thought everything was alright with Aster.
ELLY: You know I can't call you. Last time was a mistake.
FINN: But David's right. You can't go on without having any sleep.
ELLY: No, you need to keep your distance.
FINN: Not at the expense of your health. Elly, promise me you'll call me if Aster has another bad night.
No 30
Shane comes in, but Dipi's cleaning and giving him the silent treatment. Shane says he knows she wasn't behind the changed rosters, but also now knows she's been mouthing off to Sheila about their sex life, and isn't very happy about it.
DIPI: What about what you've done?!
SHANE: I've done nothing! And if you had an issue with us, you should've come to me!
DIPI: I did, but you didn't listen, because you didn't think there was a problem! Instead you've spent the last couple of weeks being there for Roxy!
SHANE: Oh, I suppose I should be grateful you didn't go blabbing to Gary!
DIPI: Are we there again? You said yourself that you didn't have a problem with him. You said he was a good guy!
SHANE: Because I got to know him! And if you gave Roxy half a chance, you'd realise that this whole thing that you've got yourself upset about isn't actually real!
DIPI: Here we go with the not listening again.
SHANE: Answer me this, honestly - do you trust me with Roxy?
At this moment, Shane's phone starts ringing on the counter top - and displaying the call as from Roxy. Shane ignores it, but Dipi gives Shane an 'I told you so' look.
DIPI: It is not about trust. What I'm upset about is, instead of being there for me, you are there for her. You'd better get that!
Dipi marches out, but Shane continues to ignore the ringing phone and looks upset.
The Waterhole
Roxy is moaning to Harlow about Sheila separating her from Shane at work. Sheila emerges from the office; she's just taken a call from Laura, the other barmaid Roxy was moaning about earlier, wanting to know what time she starts work tomorrow, as she'd agreed to swap shifts with Roxy.
SHEILA: Well, that's not gonna happen.
ROXY: Why? She's okay with it.
SHEILA: I'm not. And I told her.
ROXY: I don't understand why me and Shane are getting punished for one tiny thing.
Sheila reminds her that putting false reviews into the customer satisfaction tablet was not a 'tiny thing', and nor was Shane leaving non-staff member Gary to close up last night. Sheila walks off, and Roxy continues to moan to Harlow; but Harlow thinks Sheila has a point, and points out that the new roster means Roxy won't be working weekends.
HARLOW: Who wouldn't be happy with that?
ROXY: Me. And Shane.
HARLOW: Right. If you're so keen on hanging out with Shane, he lives across the road. Just go knock on his door.
ROXY: That is not the point (...) Shane barrelled in here before, wanting to have a private chat with Sheila. There is something else going on.
No 30
Shane is looking pensive when Dipi returns from the back yard. It appears they've both had a chance to cool off.
SHANE: I'm sorry. I should've listened to you about Roxy. I didn't, and there's no excuse... I'm also sorry I missed out on what you had planned the other night (...) You made an effort, and I stuffed it.
DIPI: ... I should've been more open about how I was feeling, instead of telling Sheila. I'm sorry, too... One of the things I love about you the most is also the thing that drives me crazy.
SHANE: Do I wanna hear this?
DIPI: I'm telling you. You are so protective of the people you care about, and I guess that's what was happening with Roxy. But sometimes, I feel as though you get so caught up in looking out for others, I get forgotten.
SHANE: Well, not anymore. You're the most important person in my life. And I'm gonna make sure you know that every single day. And possibly, night.
They pash.
No 30
Finn is in the middle of text-messaging Elly, writing, 'Was good to see you'. But he thinks again and deletes the unsent message. He starts typing a fresh one, which reads, 'Call me if you need anything', and then starts deleting that.
Susan and Karl come in; Karl has the idea in his head that they should build a granny-flat in the garden for Elly, so she'd be nearer to home but have more privacy. Susan vetoes the idea, saying she's not ripping up her cherished trees and plants for a granny-flat. Finn adds that it would all need permits from the council.
KARL: Why are you two being so negative? I thought you wanted Elly and Aster back as much as I do?
SUSAN: Elly made the decision to leave because she wanted some space. We have to respect that. No granny-flat, Karl.
Karl looks disappointed; Susan and Finn exchange a glance.
Ramsay Street
A freshly loved-up Shane and Dipi are bidding Toadie goodbye as he sets off to Colac (Hugo and Nell being already buckled into the car - AKA Not In This Episode™). Toadie jokingly wonders how Shane and Dipi will fill their time without him.
SHANE: I reckon we might be able to find something to keep us busy.
DIPI: I've got some ideas! (...) Make sure you give us some notice before you get back!
TOADIE: Yeah, I know what you're gonna be doing. Bye!
Toadie drives off, and Shane and Dipi head back up the drive. Roxy has just arrived in the street and is in the process of calling Shane on her phone, when she notices that he's over the road. However, Shane doesn't see her; and rather than answering her call, he simply cancels it and heads inside with Dipi. Roxy looks disappointed and suspicious.
No 22
Roxy comes in and has one of her customary barbed exchanges with Harlow.
ROXY: I know the pedestal you love perching on is so much higher than the rest of us, but don't you get lonely?
HARLOW: No, not really. Plus, there's a great view of you plebs scrabbling in the dirt.
ROXY: I've missed this.
HARLOW: Yeah, me too.
ROXY: Now I just need to fix things with Shane (...) He's not talking to me. I just saw him ignore my call. And he pulled Sheila away for a private chat about the rosters.
HARLOW: Are you sure you're not reading too much into this?
ROXY: I know the signs. Maybe I took it a step too far, overloading him with my problems and calling him into the city.
HARLOW: Yeah, I mean, maybe it was a little full-on. But just give him some space.
ROXY: I feel like I've just lost a really good friend, and I have no idea why.
No 26
In a specially filmed, last-minute additional scene to address the Australian bushfire crisis, David and Aaron call by to see Sheila.
DAVID: We saw that The Waterhole's holding a bushfire relief dinner this weekend.
SHEILA: Yes, and if you want to get tickets, you'd better hop in now, because we're almost sold out (...) Only sent the email this morning - it's the busiest the pub will be in months.
DAVID: It's great how everyone's stepping up to help - not just here, but around the world.
AARON: Mm. Listen, I was thinking, if you needed more prizes for the raffle, I am more than happy to donate some gym memberships.
SHEILA: Oh, that'd be great, love. And how are your family in Adelaide? How are they coping?
AARON: Uh, look, it's hairy - but they're safe.
SHEILA (to David): And your mum? She's in Sydney, isn't she?
DAVID: Yeah, she's safe - just struggling with the smoke.
SHEILA: This is the worst I have seen bushfires in my entire life.
AARON: Yeah. Makes you realise how lucky we are to be somewhere safe, right?
SHEILA: So, can I book you two in? Dinner for two?
AARON: Absolutely.
No 32
A tired Elly is once again up at night with a crying Aster, and is having no success trying to quieten her down.
No 28
Bea and Finn asleep in their room. Finn's phone bleeps with a message from Elly, waking him up and asking him to come over. Finn hesitates, looking at Bea, then climbs out of bed and gets dressed quietly, so as not to wake her. However, as he puts his shoes on in the living area, Susan appears.
SUSAN: Finn? Where are you going?
FINN: ...
Following the cliffhanger, and in addition to the inserted scene featuring David, Aaron and Sheila described earlier which aired worldwide, the Australian broadcast of this episode also included the following video message about the Australian bushfires from cast members gathered on the No 22 set - led by Stefan Dennis (Paul) and Rebekah Elmaloglou (Terese), and also featuring Jemma Donovan (Harlow), Matt Wilson (Aaron), Nicholas Coghlan (Shane), Ben Hall (Ned), Chris Milligan (Kyle), Takaya Honda (David), Zima Anderson (Roxy) and Benny Turland (Hendrix).
STEFAN: To all those who have lost their homes, their farms, their stock, their livelihoods, and most tragically their loved ones in these catastrophic and devastating fires, we want you to know that our hearts go out to you, and we feel your pain. You're part of a big community and you are not alone.
REBEKAH: From the bottom of our hearts, to our courageous firefighters and emergency workers who have risked their lives to save our lands, our homes and our wildlife...
ALL: ... thank you.
