No 30
While Kyle sleeps on the couch in the background, Toadie watches the video of Sonya that Piper sent him. It's from a vlogging project that Piper was working on at the previous New Year.
SONYA (video): Ah, for my New Year's resolution, I just... I just want to make the most of every moment that I have with my family. Ah, yeah... After the chaos of the last couple of years, we've just missed so many moments, and it's really the moments that count. And I've realised that Jarrod and I can survive anything if we just stick together, so that's what we're gonna do. Umm... I mean, I just... I can't wait to pass the years with him. And, you know, I think that we've really... well, we've planted the seeds for a wonderful life together. And now it's time for me to just sit back and watch them flower around me. I mean, I am a gardener. But, yeah - I do think the best is yet to come, so - bring it on.
Needless to say, Toadie is in floods of tears by the time the video comes to an end. At which moment, a very tipsy Shane and Dipi stumble into the house. They each give Toadie a New Year's hug, oblivious to his mood, then Shane leaps on top of Kyle to wake him up! Kyle realises he missed the New Year's countdown, as Dipi informs him it's now 2020. Kyle hugs Dipi, then heads home.
KYLE: Thanks for the shoulder. Happy New Year!
Shane and Dipi drunkenly head to bed, and Toadie is left with the laptop and his reflections.
Erinsborough Hospital
Next morning, David's still in his hospital bed, but must be feeling better as he's wearing Happy New Year antlers! Leo, Amy, Terese and Paul are gathered around the bed. (Aaron's 'down at the caf', AKA Not In This Episode™.) David has good news on his condition.
DAVID: The infection's almost gone, and they're really pleased with how my body's responding to the transplant (...) They also said that Robert's making a good recovery in Albury.
PAUL: Yeah. Where he can rot, for all I care.
DAVID: It's just a bit strange for me. I'm angry, but I'm grateful.
We learn they all spent New Year at the hospital with David; he hopes they can identify a better venue for next year's festivities! Amy's tired and ready to head home - she says Jimmy is outside, Skyping Maya. Amy hasn't made any final decision on making a permanent move to New York yet.
AMY: But Jimmy's my priority, so whatever he wants, I'll do that.
Paul, who hadn't heard, is taken aback at the suggestion she might be moving to New York.
TERESE: So what's Kyle's take on all of that?
AMY: Uh, he's not a factor... We broke up.
Terese looks around and sees that Paul has left the room....
No 22
Ned and Yashvi come downstairs, having evidently spent the night together. Yashvi is wearing Ned's shirt and he jokes that her police training academy might have something to say about her stealing it! But there's a question mark over whether last night heralds the resumption of their relationship.
NED: So what do you think? Are we doing this?
YASHVI: Yes - of course we are, idiot.
She leaps on him and kisses him.
YASHVI: Except... one problem. Dad.
NED: Not my biggest fan.
YASHVI: I would hate for him to find out before we tell him.
NED: I agree.
YASHVI: I just don't know how I'm going to break it to him.
NED: Want me to come with you?
But Yashvi says no, best not to rock the boat, adding that she's going to stress about it till it's done. Ned hugs her sympathetically.
No 30
Toadie is showing a sobered-up Shane and Dipi the video of Sonya. Dipi tearfully closes the laptop when it's finished.
DIPI: She's just so full of hope.
TOADIE: Yeah. Yeah, each time I watch it, I'm just a little less devastated, and just more inspired to somehow create the future that she wanted.
SHANE: Aren't you already doing that? With the foundation and everything?
TOADIE: Yeah. I mean, for me, the big stuff is easy. It's just kind of how she affected our everyday lives that I want to instil.
SHANE: Like what?
TOADIE: I dunno yet.
Yashvi comes in and wishes them all a happy New Year.
SHANE: The prodigal returns.
YASHVI: Me? What dark corner did you two slink off to during the countdown?
SHANE: Ah, that's for us to know.
DIPI: Anyway, you've got some cheek coming home in last night's party clothes!
SHANE: Don't tell me you spent the night with Hendrix Greyson?
YASHVI: That's a categorical no.
SHANE: Well, that's something, at least.
YASHVI: Actually -
SHANE: Between him and Ned I'd be hard-pressed to pick who's worse.
This causes Yashvi to back out of telling them she's back with Ned, and she heads off to the bedrooms to wish Kirsha, who's Not In This Episode™, a happy New Year too.
Erinsborough Hospital
Amy is sitting on a bench outside the hospital, watching Jimmy who's talking on the phone to his girlfriend Maya.
JIMMY (on the phone): It's all gonna be okay... I promise... it's not your fault...
Leo emerges from the building and joins Amy, who's worried about whatever's going on with Maya, and Jimmy more generally; she's upset that he couldn't pick up the phone from New York and tell her what was going on with him. She's also worried about what she would do for a job and accommodation if she did move permanently to New York.
AMY: But Jimmy needs me.
LEO: Don't stress. I can help you on the job front - I've made some contacts there - and you can crash with me until you find somewhere permanent.
Jimmy finishes up his call, and reports to them that Maya's mum has moved back in with her abusive dad. Amy assures Jimmy they can check in on Maya when they get to New York. But Jimmy's worried about what will happen after Amy leaves again.
AMY: I'm not leaving. I'm moving to New York with you - permanently.
A thrilled Jimmy hugs her.
Ramsay Street
Sheila and Gary are walking up the drive of No 32 to see Kyle, discussing how he isn't answering their texts, and that Amy hasn't been in touch either. Toadie approaches to wish them a happy New Year.
TOADIE: I'm glad someone else is checking in on Kyle. This break-up has really knocked him for six.
SHEILA: What?
TOADIE: Him and Amy... You didn't know.
Kyle himself then approaches; Gary says they've just heard the news.
SHEILA: Why didn't you tell us, love?
KYLE: Well, give a bloke half a chance!
Erinsborough Hospital
Amy is sitting with David.
AMY: I feel like the worst sister, deserting you before you've even been discharged.
DAVID: Don't be. I've had so many cheerleaders in here, we've had standing room only.
AMY: Family's everything. That's why I need to go and be with Jimmy.
DAVID: (...) You don't have to justify wanting to be with your son.
AMY: A few days ago, I thought I was saying goodbye to you for the last time. I was so scared.
DAVID: Well, then, this one should be a breeze. And with all those other Robinsons in New York, you're basically just trading one half of the tribe for the other.
David promises to visit her in New York once he's better.
AMY: You know you're gonna have to pull Dad into line now. It's a tough job, keeping an eye on him.
DAVID: Yeah, especially for a guy with only one kidney. But I'll try my best.
AMY: I know you will.
DAVID: As long as you do the same for Leo.
AMY: I'll do my best.
No 30
Shane and Dipi come in, having waved Invisible Kirsha back off to Sydney. Dipi's still sad that Kirsha won't let them take her to the airport, but Shane tells her just to be proud that she and Kirsha are both coping well with being separated.
Toadie tells Shane, Dipi and Yashvi that he has an announcement - he's hit on a way to 'Sonyafy' their lives.
TOADIE: I'm gonna be more like Sonya.
YASHVI: Yeah, I'm not really sure what that means.
TOADIE: What it means is that I want to embody her values. Compassion, sustainability...
DIPI: Working for the greater good.
TOADIE: Yeah, but the foundation isn't gonna help Nell and Hugo get to know their mum. So I want to introduce her into our daily lives (...) Meaning more vegetarian meals, less plastic waste, more time spent at the nursery.
Dipi thinks it's a great idea.
YASHVI: Yeah... but seriously? No meat?
Ned turns up at the door and Yashvi hurries out to meet him; she says it hasn't been the right time to tell the family about their reunion as they're talking about Sonya. Ned proposes that they tell them together, now; so Yashvi brings him into the living room.
YASHVI: Everyone... we have an announcement.
Erinsborough Hospital
Outside, Amy accuses Paul of trying to avoid her since learning of her plans to go to New York. She asks if he's angry.
PAUL: No, I'm disappointed and I'm confused. Amy, you don't need to leave the country to avoid Kyle.
AMY: He's got nothing to do with this! Jimmy needs me, and I've made my choice.
PAUL: So, bring him back to Erinsborough!
AMY: I want Jimmy to have the best life he can, and there are opportunities in New York that don't even exist here! He deserves that.
PAUL: Yes, I know he does, but... I'm sorry. I'm not accusing you of being a bad mother. It's just, you know, this is so out-of-the-blue.
AMY: For me too. Our family's been through hell this week, and we didn't fall apart. Don't make me leave without your blessing.
No 30
Shane and Dipi are digesting Ned and Yashvi's news that they're back together, while Toadie lingers in the background. There's an awkward silence, until Shane thanks them for their honesty.
SHANE: It shows maturity, and respect.
YASHVI: Why aren't you yelling?
SHANE: You've made your decision. Can't have been easy to share that with us.
YASHVI: Okay, well, I'll leave you with that and let you get on with your year!
She hurries Ned out, who thanks Shane and Dipi before leaving with her. Dipi asks why Shane didn't say anything.
SHANE: It wouldn't have changed a thing.
TOADIE: He's right.
DIPI: But that's never stopped you before.
SHANE: It's, umm... it's Sonya. It's made me think, what sort of relationship am I gonna have with my daughter?
DIPI: A good one, I hope.
Toadie smiles as he sees the impact that the 'Sonyafication' process is already having on the family.
No 26
Sheila is needlessly pestering Kyle not to 'crawl away and hide' following his break-up with Amy, while Gary urges her to give him a break.
SHEILA: He's a Canning! And when Cannings go down, they get up fighting!
Amy comes in, and Gary and Sheila prepare to give her some space with Kyle.
AMY: Wait - I've got something I want to tell you all. About New York - I'm not coming back.
Kyle looks devastated.
Erinsborough Hospital
Leo is wheeling David outside in a chair for his first breath of fresh air since the operation.
LEO: Can't believe I've been pushing you around since we were kids.
David suddenly puts the brakes on the wheelchair!
LEO: Oi!
DAVID: I guess you forgot I used to push back then, too.
LEO: Well, I'm glad we've grown up.
DAVID: I'm really impressed with how you've been able to land on your feet since moving. But don't just wait for the good news to call me; I want to hear about all of the bad stuff, too.
LEO: Yeah, same goes for you.
Meanwhile, Jimmy is walking and talking to a distracted Paul, while Terese follows behind.
JIMMY: I first met Maya in Washington Square. I was looking for someone to play chess with, and I don't think I've played a game like that since we last played. G-Dad?
PAUL: Huh?
JIMMY: Are you angry at me?
PAUL: What? Why?
JIMMY: For taking Mum away.
PAUL: Oh, no, Jimmy, no! No, I... I'm sad that she's leaving. I'm gonna miss you all like crazy, but I don't blame you.
JIMMY: Miss you, too.
Paul asks Jimmy to look after Amy for him in New York - and not to give her too much trouble.
PAUL: That goes for your friend Maya as well.
JIMMY: Says the man who's been married six times!
The three of them catch up with David and Leo, and Jimmy bids David goodbye.
PAUL (to Jimmy): I can't believe how much you've grown up, mate.
TERESE: Yeah, he's a special soul - just like his mum.
Leo and Jimmy head off to start packing, leaving Paul to talk to David.
DAVID: How are you holding up?
PAUL: Yeah, yeah, okay. Mind you, I haven't spoken to Amy since our disagreement.
DAVID: Well, I think maybe you should. Starting with an apology?
Power Road
Paul is outside The Handywoman with Amy.
PAUL: It's not that I can't live without you, it's just I'd prefer not to. And I guess that came across as me being childish, and selfish, and stubborn - and, need I go on? But Amy, I'm sorry.
AMY: I get it. You just might have to schedule a few more trips to New York, that's all.
PAUL: You know, I'll say one thing for you - you certainly don't get fazed by the hard choices, do you?
AMY: Chip off the old block, you reckon?
PAUL: Yeah, except your grit doesn't come at the cost of kindness. Oh, darling - how am I gonna get on without a straight arrow like you to keep me honest?
AMY: Did I ever manage to do that?
PAUL: Yeah, I don't think I can be all that bad if I managed to bring someone like you into the world.
AMY: There never was, and never will be, another dad like you.
They hug, just as Kyle turns up. Paul leaves them to talk.
KYLE: Any idea what you'll do with the yard?
AMY: Oh, it's all been such a rush. In the meantime, it only seems right to hand it back to you for safekeeping.
She gives him the keys to the yard.
KYLE: I don't wanna hold you up.
AMY: Kyle...
KYLE: There's nothing more to say.
AMY: This has been hard for me, too. It's a fresh start. We both need that.
But Kyle doesn't reply, just stands there instead. So Amy gets in her ute and drives off. Kyle looks hurt.
The Waterhole
Yashvi and Ned are at a table; Ned is in disbelief that Shane didn't react badly to their reunion. Shane and Dipi come in, and Shane asks if they can join them. While Yashvi and Dipi go to the bar to get drinks, Shane seizes the chance for a candid chat with Ned.
NED: Thanks for being so cool about me and Vee.
SHANE: Didn't say I was happy about it.
NED: ...
SHANE: When you break her heart - again - which you will - again - I'll be there to pick up the pieces.
NED: I'm not gonna do that?
SHANE: Aren't you? It's what you do, Ned.
NED: You can't assume that I -
SHANE: Look, Yashvi's getting on track, starting her career. It's not gonna be long before she realises she's better off without you.
NED: That's not fair.
SHANE: It doesn't have to be. Look, I've made mistakes in my life. But the thing is, I've learnt from them.
NED: You think I won't?
SHANE: Change doesn't happen without hard work and grit. And you haven't got it in you.
Yashvi and Dipi rejoin them with drinks, and Shane acts like everything's hunky dory. He raises a toast, and Ned looks uncomfortable as they all clink glasses.
Ramsay Street
Paul, Terese, Sheila, Gary and Toadie are all gathered in the street to say farewell to Amy, Leo and Jimmy, who are packing up a taxi. Paul seizes his chance to say some words to Leo.
PAUL: You know, we left things in a bit of a bad place last time, but the second we needed you, you were here.
LEO: What else would I have done, hey?
JIMMY: Yeah, it's true - he doesn't really have any friends in New York!
PAUL (to Leo): Honestly, though, mate - as a son, and a brother, and an entrepreneur - I'm so proud of you, son.
Paul and Leo hug. We see Kyle wandering out of No 32.
AMY (to Toadie): I'll never forget when you and Sonya took us in when we first arrived.
TOADIE: Are you kidding me? You were a godsend. Finally, all those broken things in the house got fixed!
They hug, and Amy tells him...
AMY: I hope you get some of the goodness you deserve.
She then goes over to a tearful Sheila, who gives her some provisions for her and Jimmy on the journey.
SHEILA: You can't survive on airline food, particularly the way that one is.
AMY: You can't help yourself, can you? Always looking after us.
SHEILA: Oh, please don't say that, love.
AMY (tearful): I'm gonna miss you! The meals and the madness!
SHEILA: And the meddling?
AMY: Especially that! I love you!
They hug. Amy then steps across to a wistful-looking Gary.
AMY: Bye, Gary.
GARY: Bye, Ames.
AMY: Promise me you'll go easy on yourself, yeah?
GARY: I'll try to.
They hug. Elly, who is suddenly In This Episode™, turns up for a quick hug too.
AMY: I want regular Skypes, so I don't miss out on seeing Aster, okay? And so I can keep an eye on you.
ELLY: I would expect nothing less!
Amy then goes to hug Terese, who tells her to take care, and finally comes to a tearful Paul.
PAUL: Oh, baby!
AMY (crying): Oh, bye, Dad!
Amy waves everyone farewell, then gets in the taxi with Leo and Jimmy. Kyle stays at a distance, watching, lips clenched, as she begins to drive away. As the taxi moves towards Kyle, Amy asks the driver to stop. She waves and mouths goodbye at him, but Kyle doesn't even smile, before turning away from her and walking indoors. Amy looks sad, but says to the taxi driver...
AMY: Just go.
We cut to Kyle looking frustrated and hurt as she drives off.
