Harold's Café
Everyone's frightened as Raymond orders Elly to collect all the phones, Yashvi to lock the door and Chloe to barricade it. He then screams at everyone, agitated because he can still hear talking. Elly tries to tell him everyone's cooperating, but there's a voice coming from the kitchen. Holding the gun, Raymond orders the person out and a very scared Kirsha emerges. He realises she's just called the cops on him and sneers that it was a "big mistake".
Police Station
Leo guides Delaney into the station, reminding her to tell the cops everything she knows. Mark's just given his statement and asks about Terese, then lets them know the shooter's partner is still on the loose. Leo swaps a look with Delaney and says with any luck the other guy will be caught soon. But things get even tenser when they hear about the hostage situation at Harold's. Mark's especially worried: the last time he checked, Chloe and Elly were still in there.
Harold's Café
Raymond orders everyone to huddle on the ground together where he can see them. Everyone that is, except for poor Kirsha, and Yashvi who has to switch off the lights. Yashvi screams at Raymond to get away from her sister when he starts to menacingly stalk towards her, so Raymond yells at the Rebecchi girls to join the others on the ground. The Ramsay Street women all cluster in a group while Raymond warns them all he doesn't want any more heroes.
Erinsborough Hospital
Piper and Paul are in the room while David explains to a more awake looking Terese that she'll feel groggy for a while and needs to remain relaxed. Before David leaves, he quietly asks Paul if he has any idea how the shooting happened. He's not pleased when Paul grimly replies they'll talk about it later. Terese assures Piper she doesn't have to worry; she's not in any pain.
TERESE: Was anyone else hurt?
PAUL: No, no, everyone's fine.
TERESE: What about Leo?
PAUL: He's down at the police station helping them in any way he can.
Paul offers to get Terese some water and bumps into Jane in the doorway. Jane's glad to see Terese awake and gently suggests that Paul head back to The Waterhole to sort everything out. But when Terese asks Paul to get ice as well he immediately acquiesces, so Jane offers to take stock at Lassiters for him and report back. Paul's relieved and accepts her help.
Harold's Café
Raymond's on the phone with the cops, negotiating for a van so he can make a getaway with all the hostages. Elly tries to reason with him, telling him there won't be enough room for everyone, and that maybe he can release the kids as "a gesture of goodwill?" But Raymond dismisses her and says he'd rather keep all his advantages.
Lassiters Complex
The police have put a barricade around the shopping complex and set up an area to coordinate negotiations and relay tactical information. Leo's by himself at one end of the barricade fretting, while Mark, Aaron, Fay, Sheila and Gary watch on in concern in the middle. It doesn't take long for Dipi and Shane to arrive, beside themselves with worry for their girls. The Rebecchis want the cops to storm right in but Mark is keeping a level head, despite his worry, and explains to them that the Local Area Command aren't trained for hostage situations. They have to wait for the specialists.
Snr Sgt Lake rushes over to Leo and says they need his help with Delaney. They want her to speak to her father about releasing hostages but so far she's refusing. Leo quickly agrees to help, particularly since Raymond is short on patience.
Police Station
Snr Sgt Lake sits in the interview room with Leo and Delaney. Leo tries his best to convince Delaney to do the right thing, but Delaney's scared of her family and lashes out at Snr Sgt Lake when pushed. Leo asks if he can have a word alone with Delaney so Snr Sgt Lake steps out.
DELANEY: Okay, so you think I'm a monster like my father, don't you?
LEO: It's not about what I think; it's about what you do. Look, you've made mistakes but you're young. You can change. You don't want the same life as your family do you? (Delaney shakes her head) Then use this chance to make things right.
She looks at him like his words might actually be sinking in.
Harold's Café
Raymond's pacing is stirring up anxiety in his hostages, especially since he's growing more and more restless with the cops on the phone at his lack of getaway vehicle.
RAYMOND: Maybe you'll act fast if I get rid of a hostage!
He kicks at the chairs and tables, yelling down the phone that he wants a van, not a car. Elly swallows her nerves and suggests to Raymond that a car would be better so he doesn't have to wrangle as many people and can make a faster getaway. Raymond tells the cops they've got five minutes then turns to glare at Elly.
RAYMOND: One more word outta you...!
ELLY: I want this over as fast as you do.
RAYMOND: Stop trying to trick me into letting everyone go, it's not gonna happen!
ELLY: I'm not trying to trick you; I understand you need insurance but you only need one hostage to do that.
CHLOE: Elly don't!
ELLY: Taking this many people will only slow you down. You need to make this easy on yourself. Just take me!
Chloe looks at Elly in concern while Raymond continues to pace around like a caged animal, Elly's words ringing in his ears.
Erinsborough Hospital
Piper is alarmed when Terese looks as though she's in pain, but can't help a small smile of relief when Terese admits she was thinking about a work meeting tomorrow she'll have to reschedule. She asks Piper to get in touch with Chloe to sort the rest of her work week out, but then becomes confused about her ordeal.
TERESE: I don't understand how this even happened. (Piper and Paul swap an awkward look, unseen by Terese) A man with a gun in The Waterhole?
PIPER: Mum don't think about that right now, just focus on your recovery.
Piper steps out to call Chloe and Paul takes her place by Terese's bedside. He says how sorry he is for everything but Terese doesn't see why he should feel guilty, "you didn't have the gun".
PAUL: No but just, seeing you hurt like this I...
TERESE: Is everything all right at The Waterhole?
PAUL: I don't know.
TERESE: You should go back there.
PAUL: No it's all right, Jane's there. She's going to report back to me if I need to know anything. Right here is where I need to be.
He can only muster a quick, sad smile for her, his guilt eating away at him.
Lassiters Complex
Delaney (wearing a bullet-proof vest) is led over to the info tent to be briefed by the negotiator. Snr Sgt Lake congratulates Leo on talking sense into her. Over at the barricades everyone is still in concern mode. Mark has just been talking to the cops and asks Shane and Dipi if they have a plan of the café so they know where all the exits are. Shane says he can draw one easily enough, but then notices movement at the doorway of Harold's. There are cries of relief as hostages start racing outside. Shane and Dipi sprint towards Kirsha and Shane hastily carries her out of the line of danger. Their happiness is short-lived, however, when they realise not everyone made it out.
KIRSHA: Elly, Chloe and Yashvi had to stay. They're still in there with that man.
Dipi and Shane looked crushed, Aaron hugs his mum and Leo is even more stressed than he was before.
Harold's Café/Lassiters Complex
Elly's still in persuasion mode, suggesting that Raymond let Yashvi and Chloe go as well. She freezes when Raymond advances on her and strokes her cheek, telling her he'll make the decisions not her. But Elly won't stop trying to convince him otherwise. She tells him it'll be too much trouble to control three people in the car.
ELLY: You have a better chance of making it out of this if you take one hostage with you.
CHLOE: She's right, but take me instead.
ELLY: What? No, Chloe! (To Raymond) Don't listen to her!
CHLOE: I'm the one with the limited future. You're about to get married; you have so much to look forward to.
ELLY: That doesn't mean my life has more value.
CHLOE: Take me!
While Elly and Chloe continue to talk over one another, Yashvi notices Raymond getting incredibly angry with them and tries to warn both of them to keep quiet. But Raymond reaches the end of his tether and shoots a bullet into the roof, shouting at them to shut up, scaring the hell out of them.
There's panic and chaos amongst the Ramsay Street residents and the cops when they hear the gun go off. Snr Sgt Lake tells Delaney to talk to her dad on the phone and stall for time as the response team is only minutes away, but Delaney has completely frozen up. She cries and says she can't go through with it.
Watching all of this go down, Leo makes a rash decision and bolts through the barricade, racing towards Harold's. Mark, Gary and co yell out at him, telling him to stop, much like Snr Sgt Lake and Delaney also do, but Leo ignores them all and bolts past the cops. He yells out for "Renshaw" and comes to a stop outside Harold's.
LEO: Raymond it's me, Leo Tanaka. I'm the one you want. (He raises his hands to his head in surrender) Let the others go.
Raymond takes a moment then unlocks the door to let Leo inside. Leo sees Elly, Chloe and Yashvi on the ground, takes a breath, and then walks in.
Outside in the complex news crews have turned up and there's a reporter on the scene relaying the events so far while police with sniper rifles take their mark at different vantage points. Paramedics attend to people in shock, witnesses are questioned and all trained eyes remain on the café.
Inside the café, Leo slowly circles his way to stand in front of the women, wary of the gun in Raymond's hand.
RAYMOND: If you're here to apologise you're a little late.
LEO: Yeah, Ivan made that pretty clear when he pulled the gun. Look, I'm here to ask you to let these people go.
RAYMOND: Yeah but you don't get to ask me anything do you.
LEO: That's fair enough I know you're angry at me.
RAYMOND: Angry? You betrayed me. Sent me to prison! I thought of you like a son.
LEO: I know, but think about your daughter. She's out there right now watching this all go down.
Yashvi, Chloe and Elly keep watching in silence. Elly seeks comfort from Chloe by huddling against her.
RAYMOND: Don't you talk to me about Delaney and don't pretend you're here for any other reason than to stall me.
LEO: She loves you, Raymond.
RAYMOND: Ahh, shut up, idiot! All three of you up, come on, let's go!
LEO: Raymond don't do this!
RAYMOND: QUIET!
LEO: (panicked) Think about Delaney, what's she going to do if you get hurt?
RAYMOND: I SAID YOU NEED TO LISTEN TO ME!
Leo and the girls drop to the floor in terror as Raymond raises his gun in the air - just as the cops swarm in and tackle him to the ground. There's screaming and shouting but the ordeal is over when Raymond's gun is taken and cleared of bullets. Yashvi breathes a shaky sigh of relief and Elly bursts into tears as Chloe tries to comfort her.
Lassiters Complex
A short time has passed and things have calmed down somewhat. Dipi and Shane comfort their girls, shaken but happy they got out of everything unscathed. Jane finds them and offers her support, but Shane says they're just glad it's over.
KIRSHA: I'm sorry I left you in there.
YASHVI: (hugging her sister) Don't say that. I was so relieved when Elly told the guy to let you guys go.
Jane's surprised to learn that Elly was the one trying to talk sense into the gunman. Dipi then starts to go on about the tarot cards again and how they might have meant a near-death experience for her girls instead of herself. But Shane urges his wife to try and forget the cards and focus on the fact they're all safe.
JANE: Oh my goodness, I don't know what Paul's going to say when I tell him about this.
SHANE: Yeah where is he? I've not seen him.
JANE: He's been at the hospital all afternoon with Terese.
DIPI: Doesn't he know that his son just confronted that awful man? He's known to drop everything for Terese, though, isn't he? (Realising she might have put her foot in it) Not that there's anything unusual about him caring about Terese in a colleague sort of way.
JANE: That's fine.
DIPI: Jane I'm so sorry, please just disregard everything I'm saying. I'm just so overwhelmed by the day, I don't know if I'm Arthur or Martha. I'm sorry.
Jane repeats that it's fine, but the look on her face says otherwise.
Harold's Café
Mark, Aaron, Fay and Leo wait for Elly and Chloe to finish up their statements to the police. Fay fusses over Chloe and Elly snuggles into Mark, telling them how she was running out of ways to try and talk Raymond around. She praises Leo for showing up when he did, but Leo doesn't think he deserves it.
LEO: The Renshaws wouldn't have been in town if it wasn't for me.
MARK: You stepped up when you needed to and you bought the police some time, so thank you.
Leo takes his leave, saying he needs to head back to the hospital to see Terese. Elly smiles at Chloe and asks if she's finally ready to get out of the café.
CHLOE: Sure doesn't feel like the right time to order a latte.
Elly takes Chloe's hand and holds onto it, a moment not unnoticed by Aaron. He also notices the wounded look on Chloe's face when Mark tugs Elly away into a hug, breaking the handhold. Mark says he's not ready to let go of Elly just yet - he was scared he was going to lose her.
Erinsborough Hospital
David checks over Terese while Piper and Paul fill her in on what happened at Harold's. Terese still can't believe everything that's gone on and doesn't understand what possesses someone to do something so awful. David agrees that it's hard to imagine, throwing a pointed glance to his sheepish-looking dad. Terese asks Piper if Chloe sounded okay but Piper says she couldn't get through to her. David tells Terese that the swelling from her injury will go down soon and asks if she's in any pain, but he becomes wary when she says no.
DAVID: None at all?
TERESE: Actually, if anything, my hand does feel a little bit numb.
David squeezes different parts of her fingers, asking if she can feel anything, but Terese says she can't. Paul and Piper are concerned by David's silence but David says he'll just need to send Terese down to radiology for some extra scans. Terese is also worried but David replies he's just being cautious. He leaves Terese's room and goes to the nurse's station to make a phone call.
DAVID: This is Doctor Tanaka; I need to order an MRA for Terese Willis's left arm, hand to shoulder... No I need her in sooner than that, this is urgent.
He hangs up the call and appears quite vexed.
Erinsborough Hospital/Number 32 Backyard/Police Station/Number 24
Piper walks alongside Terese as she's wheeled by David and his colleagues to have her MRA done. Piper shoots an unhappy look towards Leo and Paul.
Kirsha and Yashvi cuddle together on a chair while Shane and Dipi set the table for dinner. Shane and Dipi look at their daughters, internally grappling with what might have happened if Raymond wasn't caught in time.
Snr Sgt Lake watches as Raymond's led out of the interview room in handcuffs.
Mark sits with Elly on the couch. Fay and Aaron chop up food for dinner while Chloe sits on a stool in front of them. Elly glances over at Chloe and they share a quiet look between them; processing the ordeal they went through.
Erinsborough Hospital
Jane finds Paul staring into Terese's empty room and asks if everything's okay. Paul says Terese has been taken for more scans but he's worried it's something more serious than David's letting on. Leo's gone to see if he can get some more answers.
JANE: Why don't you take a break?
PAUL: No I can't leave.
JANE: Paul you have been here for hours. And quite frankly there is a huge mess back at Lassiters to deal with and I'm not just talking about the shooting.
PAUL: I know, the siege, but... Oh god what have I done? You know this whole mess I could have put a stop to it weeks ago?
JANE: None of this is the slightest bit your fault. There were two gunmen on the loose!
PAUL: No, no, you don't understand.
Paul becomes more agitated and Jane takes his hands to calm him.
JANE: Well why don't you try me? Paul...
PAUL: You see this whole thing, the siege the shooting. Leo and I were being threatened by Delaney.
JANE: Threatened over what?
PAUL: Jane a year and a half ago... I killed a man.
Jane drops his hands in repulsed shock. Paul can only look at her in utter shame.
