Number 26
Gary and Xanthe finish watching a Harry Potter film. Xanthe's keen to pop the third one on, insisting she's not tired, but her yawning says otherwise. Gary works out that Xanthe's having trouble sleeping because she's worried about Finn. He reminds her that the doctors said getting enough rest was vital in controlling her seizures.
GARY: I promise you're safe here. Finn was never actually back in town. Wherever he is he'll be caught very soon.
XANTHE: But how can you be so confident?
GARY: Because the police are doing everything they can, and in the meantime you are safe here, princess.
Xanthe trundles off to bed just as Gary gets a phone call from Mishti and learns about the 'break in' at The Retreat.
Number 30
Toadie's having trouble sleeping too, as memories of his truth or dare kiss with Dee keep going through his mind. Sonya finds him sitting on the couch and isn't thrilled when she hears why he's awake.
TOADIE: I can't stop thinking about what Andrea said in the psych ward. There's something I haven't told you.
SONYA: What exactly is worrying you about it?
TOADIE: It's a specific detail. It's about a game of truth or dare that led to a first kiss.
SONYA: Well details make the lies more convincing, Jarrod.
TOADIE: Yeah but she hasn't mentioned it before and you'd think that she'd have already done that for sure. And there's no way Sindi could've even known about it.
SONYA: (blunt) Dee's dead. You told me that you believed that.
TOADIE: Yeah... yeah I do. Of course I do. Sindi must have told her.
SONYA: I'm trying so hard to forgive Sindi for what she did, but every time Andrea spouts another detail that that woman gave her I just...
Toadie says that Sindi is trying to make up for her past mistakes but Sonya wonders if that's true.
TOADIE: I believe that she's genuine, but you obviously don't think that she deserves a second chance.
SONYA: Well I'd be a hypocrite if I didn't. But I also believe that we deserve a chance to move on from Andrea and everything that she did.
Erinsborough Hospital
Gary arrives just as David and the ambulance staff are wheeling an unconscious Sindi into emergency. David directs Gary to talk to Mishti, who tells him that Sindi sent out an SOS on her phone around 10.40pm. Gary asks if the robber escaped but Mishti says they found him a few blocks away with stolen cash and arrested him. The money will be kept in evidence for the time being and Mishti will get a statement from Sindi in the morning.
Number 26
Gary has called Ned over to debrief the situation. He tells Ned that Jeremy is keeping mum for now, and that Mishti believes the money belongs to The Retreat, but he thinks his luck will run out soon enough.
NED: He's not going to admit the money's his. That would open up a whole different line of questioning.
GARY: Yeah but if he lets them believe it was a robbery he's going back inside. And what if he decides to take me down with him? I can't leave Xanthe again, not now.
NED: Gary there's a hundred grand at stake. Jeremy implicates you, that's gone, he knows that.
GARY: That's beside the point. He'll think I set him up.
NED: Why? All you want is a lead on Finn.
GARY: Which I won't be getting now. Poor Sindi, I hate what's happened to her.
Gary wonders what his next move should be so Ned advises him to sit tight for now and then get to the hospital first thing in the morning, "Maybe Sindi can fill in some gaps."
Lassiter's Hotel
The next morning, Leo sees Ned chatting to two guys and is amused when he realises Ned has been getting attention from the engagement photos of he and Aaron up on Instagram.
NED: They asked me for a drink up at the pool bar.
LEO: (teasing) Why are they hitting on an engaged man?
NED: Don't ask me. Maybe they think Aaron and I are in some open relationship.
Terese walks out the front where the guys are and grins at them.
TERESE: Hey Ned! Didn't recognise you with your shirt on.
NED: Who showed you?
TERESE: Chloe. But I must say, you and Aaron make a very convincing couple.
NED: The photographer said I had to bring the love!
Terese says that Ned could work on his poses a bit more. This segue ways into Terese telling Ned about the photo shoot she did for the masquerade ball, the very reminder of which sends Leo's mind into overdrive.
TERESE: They were quite saucy, I must say.
NED: Ohhh! Are we talking tomato or habanero?
TERESE: (smirking) Cleavage maybe.
NED: Oooh! (to Leo) Did you see this?
LEO: (deer caught in headlights) Uh... I don't think so.
TERESE: They used the more discreet ones for promo material. Anyway, enjoy your fifteen minutes.
She walks off and Ned immediately, and delightedly, guesses by the overwhelmed look on Leo's face that he has indeed seen the saucy photos. Leo pretty much tells Ned to shut up and get back to work before running away.
Erinsborough Hospital
Gary arrives in the middle of Mishti collecting Sindi's statement about the robbery, but Sindi says he can stay and hear the details. Sindi says the culprit was determined to get into the cabinet and she only gave him the keys because she was frightened of what would happen if she didn't. Gary asks why Sindi was at work after knock-off time but Sindi says she was paranoid she hadn't locked up properly. Mishti tells Gary not to interrupt the questioning process.
MISHTI: There was a hundred thousand dollars in the backpack.
SINDI: You're kidding me.
GARY: That was my fault. With everything that's happened over the past few weeks I haven't had a chance to get to the bank.
MISHTI: Why wasn't it in the safe?
GARY: It should have been, I guess I haven't been thinking clearly.
Mishti ends her time with Sindi and Gary follows her into the corridor. He asks Mishti if the guy said anything about why he targeted The Retreat, but Mishti says they're assuming it's a random break-in and the crim hasn't said anything to indicate otherwise.
Harold's Café
Paul wants more help from Leo in his pursuit of Terese, this time in regards to her birthday. He's got a great day planned; he just needs Leo to keep Terese occupied for the morning while the staff set everything up on the terrace. Leo's super uncomfortable at the thought of spending alone time with Terese and protests that he can't just abandon all the work she's given him for the day.
LEO: And she is still my mentor.
PAUL: All right look, you let me worry about that. But the thing is, despite what she said at our brunch, I'm positive she's interested. Which means I'm not going to need your help after today.
LEO: Fine. Last time.
David walks in and wonders what his brother and dad are plotting but Paul says Leo's just doing a favour for him. David asks his fam to join him for a coffee break but they both need to head off. Toadie and Sonya (with Hugo) are sitting nearby and David lets them know that Sindi's in hospital and might like some company. Sonya looks oh so thrilled at the prospect.
Erinsborough Hospital
David leads the Rebecchis into Sindi's room and Toadie says she should have called them, but Sindi feels bad they're making a fuss over her. David reminds her she did try and tackle a burglar, but Sindi says she did it because she didn't want to let down Gary and Steph.
Out in the corridor, Gary wraps up a phone call with Xanthe just as Amy arrives. Amy says she came to see Sindi but wants to know how Gary's doing as well.
AMY: You can't seem to catch a break lately.
GARY: It seems that way.
AMY: Well I hope your luck turns around soon. (She nudges his shoulder) You're a good egg, Gary.
But Gary knows that if he were in Willy Wonka's chocolate factory right now, he would definitely fall down the bad egg chute straight after Veruca Salt.
The City
Leo has taken Terese to one of Melbourne's popular graffiti laneways with colourful artwork splashed around everywhere. He thinks Lassiter's should start laneway tour packages, but can see that Terese isn't too enthused with the idea. She's aware of the cultural appeal but figures people can just get the tram in. Leo says Lassiter's would offer more of a tailored option and "every picture tells a story." Terese decides to give Leo a chance to convince her it's a good business prospect for the hotel.
Erinsborough Hospital
Amy leaves Toadie chatting with Sindi while she goes to check on Sonya in the corridor. Amy admits she feels bad for questioning how genuine Sindi was when she first started working at The Retreat considering what happened last night. Sonya admits she and Toadie called Steph to tell her about Sindi, but Steph's going to let her stay on.
AMY: You still have doubts?
SONYA: I know she wants to make amends, and I'm all for her having a new career, I just don't want her to do it here in Erinsborough. And I feel terrible saying that out loud but...
AMY: No I get it.
SONYA: It's just everything that happened last year it started with Sindi. And we're still dealing with the knock-on effects of her actions.
AMY: Do you think you can forgive her?
SONYA: I want to but it's just going to take time. And it's going to take distance.
Amy looks thoughtful and asks Sonya If Sindi used to have something to do with home makeovers, which Sonya confirms. Sonya asks what idea Amy has brewing in her head.
The Flametree Retreat
Mishti returns the backpack of money to Gary at reception, believing that it belongs to The Retreat. She advises him to deposit it immediately and get his banking in order. Gary says he thought the money would be tied up in evidence for a while but Mishti says that would've only been necessary if they went to court.
GARY: The case isn't going to trial?
MISHTI: No. The guy pleaded guilty to robbery. He's also been done with parole violation.
GARY: So he's going back inside?
MISHTI: He was transferred earlier.
Gary then asks if she's got any new leads on Finn but Mishti says he'll be the first to know when they do. After she leaves, Gary gets a phone call from an unknown number, which turns out to be Warrinor Prison. It looks like Jeremy's got something to say.
The City
It appears as though Leo has done well in convincing Terese about his idea, as she's less sceptical than before. They take a seat on one of the concrete benches and Terese opens up a bit about her past, telling Leo the artwork is far more creative than she could have ever come up with.
LEO: What? Did you used to paint?
TERESE: I may or may not have tagged a few trains with my mates up in the Northern Territory.
LEO: Crocodile Terese, except she carries a spray can, not a knife!
TERESE: (laughing) No they were just cargo trains. And then we got busted.
LEO: Still, you think you know someone...
TERESE: Yes, well, I've grown up a lot since then. Now I just channel all my energies into healthier pursuits. But I used to be a wild child.
LEO: Hey, you've got nothing on me.
(She looks him up and down with a smile)
TERESE: Try me.
LEO: I ran a poker racket in high school.
TERESE: I spent more time in nightclubs than I ever did in school.
LEO: Well you would have come to me to buy your fake ID.
TERESE: Why buy it when you can steal your cousin's?
LEO: You stole a licence? I stole a car.
TERESE: OK fine, you got me there. I never stole a car... I just set one on fire once.
(They both break into laughter)
LEO: What?!
TERESE: I'm joking.
LEO: Yeah I never stole a car either.
TERESE: Really?
LEO: What, do I look like a juvenile delinquent to you?
Terese just smirks and doesn't reply. Leo looks at her fondly, his crush appearing to get even deeper now they've had this moment of connection.
Erinsborough Hospital
Sindi's up and dressed and signing release papers for a nurse. Toadie asks if she's sure she's comfortable enough to return to work, but Sindi says the guy's behind bars and Gary will need her back ASAP. Sonya and Amy walk in and tell Sindi there's something they need to discuss with her. Sindi's face falls and she thinks Steph wants her gone, but Amy asks how Sindi would feel about a different job opportunity.
AMY: I did some research online about your making over mansions and you've got a good eye.
SINDI: (hopeful) Is there a job going at Robinson Heights? Because that would be perfect.
AMY: No but I did speak to a contact at a different job and they need a sales manager.
SONYA: It's in Sydney.
Amy says Sindi's skills would come in handy and Sonya offers a character reference from her and Toadie - Gary too. Sindi looks a bit crestfallen by the job offer.
SINDI: I understand why you want me to leave, but I can't until I've earned your forgiveness for destroying your lives.
SONYA: Are you not interested in the job?
SINDI: Yes of course I am. It's the fresh start that I'm desperate for. But have I earned it?
SONYA: If you need my blessing, Sindi, then you have it.
SINDI: You wouldn't begrudge me?
SONYA: Of course not. I just prefer that you did it somewhere else.
Sindi looks relieved and thanks Sonya.
The City
Leo and Terese are strolling slowly out of the laneway when Leo brings up Terese's birthday. He pretends he heard about it from people at work but Terese hopes there's no cake or singing when they get back.
LEO: Not a fan of birthdays?
TERESE: I just don't see a reason to fuss. It's not like a special achievement.
LEO: Yeah, not like a merger or a business award.
TERESE: Exactly. It's simply just turning a year older. I mean don't get me wrong; I've got no problems with aging. I'm happier now than I ever was in my twenties.
LEO: So you've never celebrated a birthday?
TERESE: Oh, well, milestones. I organised a three-day bash for my twenty-first. And a girlfriend and I went to Europe for my thirtieth.
LEO: Right, and you went to a laneway for your...
TERESE: (grinning) I can see what you're doing! I just think it's silly to celebrate an arbitrary day, especially now.
LEO: Without Josh?
TERESE: It's just a reminder that he's not here to celebrate. But if it makes you feel better, bring on the cake!
They keep walking down the laneway but Terese suddenly stumbles, taking a turn on her ankle. Leo's there to catch her fall and tells her to hold on to him for support as she hobbles her way out. "Now I feel like an old lady," Terese grumbles.
Number 30
Sindi pops by to say goodbye to Sonya and Toadie - her flight to Sydney leaves in a couple of hours. She thanks them both for everything they've done for her.
SONYA: I really do wish you well, Sindi.
SINDI: Well you're a better person than I am. I don't think I'll ever forgive myself for what I did.
SONYA: Just look to the future. That's what we're trying to do.
Hugo starts crying in his room so Sonya goes to check on him, leaving Toadie to ask Sindi a question that's been playing on his mind.
TOADIE: Did you ever tell Andrea about the time Dee and I first kissed?
SINDI: No. Why?
TOADIE: She mentioned it when I visited.
SINDI: No that would have been long before I ever met you, and Dee would never have told me anything like that. When Andrea was here pretending to be Dee she hung out with Susan and Karl and Steph, any one of those guys could have told her that story.
TOADIE: Yeah maybe.
SINDI: Just forget about it, Toadie. Look to the future like Sonya said.
TOADIE: Yeah you're right.
Sindi gives him a pat on the arm before she leaves but Toadie is troubled; he didn't get the peace of mind he was after from Sindi.
The Flametree Retreat
Gary's called Ned in on his work break to let him know Jeremy's back in jail and he blames Gary, which doesn't surprise Ned. Gary also shows him that the money's back in his possession.
NED: Did you tell him it's safe?
GARY: Yeah but that didn't stop him getting aggro.
NED: Hopefully he'll have cooled off by the time he comes to get it.
GARY: What will he want next? He's got me over a barrel.
NED: I don't know what to tell you. Your chance to talk to the cops has been and gone.
GARY: So what now? I've just got to sit on this cash for god knows how long?
NED: Lock it up somewhere more secure and forget about it until Jeremy comes calling. And whatever you do, don't spend a single dollar.
Lassiter's Hotel
Leo holds onto Terese's bag and shoes while he helps her get out of the car. Terese holds on to him and says she's going to have to dig out Piper's crutches. Paul meets them out the front and asks what happened but Terese is sure it's just a sprain. Paul takes over from Leo and starts to guide Terese into the hotel for an ice pack, but first Terese smiles and thanks Leo for a fun morning.
TERESE: It's been a great start to my birthday.
PAUL: I've no doubt it's only going to get better. Thanks for looking after her, mate.
But as Paul and Terese walk off, Leo looks disappointed that his day with Terese is over.
