Number 24
Steph tells Ellen that the shoes are hers and she's just grown tired of them, but Ellen's like, 'Well how about throwing them in the bin then instead of creating a BBQ bonfire?' Ellen then tells Steph that she saw Mark take the shoes from the station earlier, which makes Steph panic. She says that Mark has no idea she took them so Ellen suggests they give Mark a call.
Number 26
Xanthe's watching The Bold & the Beautiful with Brooke, but when Gary arrives home she gives her parents some space to chat. Gary's wary about sitting too close to Brooke and giving off "the wrong signals", but Brooke says she's over her earlier embarrassment. In fact, she thinks that Gary should do something big to win Terese back to show her he's "in it for the long haul." Gary ponders this. Please don't buy her a pigeon, Gaz.
Number 24
Mark arrives home and Ellen gets he and Steph to confess that the shoes are Sonya's and that they were found outside the Backpackers after the accident. Ellen's rightfully shocked and wonders why Sonya hasn't been brought in for questioning. But Mark says he believes that Sonya's innocent, and that she doesn't deserve to be dragged into this after everything she's been through lately. Somehow Mark convinces Ellen to cover things up (also using her history with Sonya, and how Sonya helped Josie through her eating disorder), and Ellen ends up setting the Shady Shoes of Suspiciontm on fire herself. Bad cops, bad cops, whatcha gonna do, whatcha gonna do when they burn some shoes...
Number 30
Sonya hangs up from a phone call with Toadie and has a hazy flashback to making a call to him after her drunken night out. Flashback Sonya hears Nell squealing in the background of the call and Present Day Sonya is very confused.
Number 24
The charred remains of the shoes smoke away on the BBQ like a long forgotten entry into the Bonza Barbie Bash. Ellen says she only did it because she owed Mark and Steph for what she put them through with the Victoria situation. Steph says they should all just leave everything in the past and move on. When Ellen exits, Steph stares at Mark and says she can't believe they got away with it. Mark grumbles that Steph should have told him what she was doing, but Steph says he would have just talked her out of it. She adds that now there's nothing linking Sonya to the crime, "let's just hope it stays that way."
Lassiter's Park
Paul hangs up from a very pleasing phone call finalising his settlement with the Quill group. He sits on a park bench and grins like the cat that's got the gold-plated canary with his legs spread so wide in a power stance that he's practically doing the splits.
Number 22
A beaming Paul tells Terese that a representative from the Quills will be down to see him soon to sign him over (insert Doctor Evil impersonation) twelve million dollars. Terese can't help but worry this means Paul will try and win Lassiter's back, but thankfully Paul saves us from Hotel Wars round nine thousand and five by agreeing not to scheme against her. "I lost the hotel because of my own foolishness, long before Julie ever came into the picture." Paul, however, does have his heart set on one aspect of the hotel - Terese's old penthouse office that Jasmine is making her rent out. "I have a proposal for you," Paul grins (spoiler alert, not the first one Terese is gonna hear this episode).
Number 26
Gary is letting his mum in on the 'win back Terese' plan Brooke suggested to him.
GARY: Brooke told me if I wanted her back I'm gonna have to do something big. So guess what I'm gonna do.
SHEILA: Take her to Lanzini's?
GARY: No, bigger. Think grand gesture type stuff.
SHEILA: Uh, I know you can't afford a helicopter.
GARY: Marriage proposal.
SHEILA: Gary Francis Xavier Canning, are you out of your mind?!
GARY: Nothing says 'I love you' to a woman more than 'I'm ready to commit to you for the rest of my life'!
SHEILA: Until you get divorced!
GARY: Why do you have to be such a Debbie Downer?
Xanthe overhears the conversation in the background and doesn't look too pleased. Gary tells his mum that this is the best way to prove to Terese that he's trustworthy and is nothing like Brad - he's even going to give her Great Aunt Ethel's engagement ring. Sheila's worried Gary's going to get his heart stomped on again but Gary knows Terese still loves him deep down, she just needs some encouragement.
Number 30
Toadie's over to collect Nell for the night and tells her to grab her toothbrush from the bathroom because Clancy ate her other one. Sonya hesitates before asking Toadie about the phone call she made to him a few weeks back, wondering if it was about Nell's day care fees. Toadie's confused - the call only lasted five seconds because Nell was crying and he had to attend to her. He meant to call Sonya back but he never got around to it. Sonya ponders this and Toadie asks if everything's OK, but Sonya says she's fine.
Number 24
Tyler tells Mark and Steph that he's pretty sure they were Sonya's shoes he saw in the photo album. Steph freezes but Mark plays it cool and says Sonya's been discounted as a potential suspect and a potential witness. Tyler wants to know what Sonya said when Mark interviewed her but Mark's like, 'for the fifty gazillionth time this is confidential police business!' Aaron looks on wordlessly in the background while Steph smiles and says they should trust Mark has done his job. Tyler understands but for Piper and David's sakes, he just doesn't want whoever committed the crime to get away with it.
Number 26
Xanthe asks her mum what the deal is with Gary planning to propose to Terese, but Brooke says everything will work out in the end when Terese says no and Gary finally gets the closure he needs. Then, when he's licked his wounds, he'll fall back in love with Brooke and they can get married, Xanthe and Jessie can be flower girls, and they'll all live happily ever after the end.
XANTHE: I ship you and dad but this is really mean.
BROOKE: No, honey, I love your dad. Terese doesn't. You just need to take a big deep breath and trust in the process.
Number 24
Gary practices his proposal on Terese's doorstep before he just barges right on in the door without knocking. He's surprised to see Terese and Paul sitting together on the couch and asks what's going on. Paul smirks and says they're doing a business deal - he just bought the penthouse back. He gathers his jacket and leaves the house, telling Gary that it was an easy mistake to make thinking he and Terese were up to something, "we do go back a long way." Once they're alone Gary thinks it's a golden moment to propose, but Terese is full of Terage and yells at him for A) barging in, and B) getting Brooke to stick her nose into their break-up on his behalf (not that Gary was aware of that). Gary wisely decides now's not really the best time to pop the question.
Number 30
Sonya's making a cuppa and looking at a photo of Nell on the wall when she has another flashback to her drunk phone call. Sonya remembers becoming distressed at the sound of Nell screaming. Back in the present, Steph asks Sonya if she's OK and becomes alarmed when Sonya mentions having flashbacks to the morning of the accident.
SONYA: I was panicking about Nell and I know I would have been desperate to get to her. What if I actually saw Amy's Ute and I got behind the wheel and I'm the one who caused this accident?
STEPH: No...
SONYA: But I was there! I was there and I remember hurrying, trying to get to Nell and I don't remember anything else! Could I have been the one who actually hurt Piper and David?
Sonya says she needs to tell Mark what she remembers, but Steph says Sonya needs to calm down and just sleep on it.
Number 32/Number 30/Number 24
Toadie picks up a sleepy Nell from the couch and takes her to bed. Over at #30 Sonya sits on the edge of her bed, unable to sleep with all the thoughts racing through her mind. At the Brennans, Mark can't sleep either and does some cleaning in the kitchen, the guilt eating at him.
Number 26
Gary's giving Brooke, Xanthe and Sheila a rundown of what happened with the aborted proposal at Terese's. The ladies are sympathetic but Gary knows he can't keep flogging a dead horse; his relationship with Terese is over.
GARY: It's like Taylor Swift says, Terese and I are never, ever, ever getting back together. Right, Princess?
XANTHE: Tay-Tay never lies. I'm sorry this happened to you, dad.
BROOKE: Break-ups are never easy, but you know what? You'll feel better when you wake up tomorrow and then it'll get a bit better every day.
Brooke shares a knowing look with Xanthe - her plan appears to have paid off.
Number 24
Sonya pays an early morning visit to the Brennans looking for Mark, but Tyler and Aaron are the only ones there. Tyler says that Mark found Sonya's shoes at the Backpackers crash but it's OK because Tyler knows Mark interviewed her already (which is all news to bewildered Sonya). He just wants to ask if Sonya saw anyone else there that morning, becoming concerned when Sonya falls silent (even cautiously asking if she was drinking again last night, earning an exasperated "Ty!" from Aaron). Sonya leaves in a hurry and Tyler notes to Aaron that it seemed as though Sonya had no idea what he was talking about.
Out on the front porch, Sonya has another flashback, this time revealing that in her determination to get to Nell, she got into Amy's Ute in all her drunken glory and reversed the car into the Backpackers. She got the cut on her chin from hitting it on the steering wheel during the impact. Not realising what she'd just done, Flashback Sonya got out of the car and stumbled away from the accident site. Back in the present, Sonya's absolutely shaken to the core.
The Waterhole
Gary's down in the dumps, telling Toadie that he let the best woman he knows walk out of his life and there'll be no one else like her. Toadie says there'll be other women (hopefully not any doppelgangers resembling dead wives), but Gary's not convinced and says he was an idiot for not treating Terese right. Toadie thinks Gary's being a bit harsh on himself but Paul, who has been eavesdropping, happily sticks the boot in.
PAUL: I don't know about that. I'd say it was a pretty accurate appraisal if you ask me.
GARY: Nobody's asking so bugger off.
PAUL: Ooh, touchy! Mind you I'd probably be the same way if I'd let somebody as magnificent as Terese slip through my fingers.
TOADIE: Paul!
PAUL: Anyway don't worry about it, buddy. We all know you were punching way above your weight.
When Paul leaves, Gary gets a determined look on his face and says to Toadie, "I'll show him who's punching above his weight."
Number 22
Terese answers the door to Gary in her pyjamas, but at least he's had the foresight to knock this time. Terese angrily says she thought she made herself clear to Gary last night to stay away, but Gary's on a roll and needs to blurt out his feelings.
GARY: I know I might not be the sharpest tool in the shed, and I've got a head like a half-eaten mango. And let's face it, my pockets don't run that deep. But what I have got over all those other blokes is a great, big, beating heart. And it only beats for one woman. You, Terese.
(Terese's face softens when Gary gets down on one knee)
GARY: You've made me a thousand times better man than I am and I can't imagine life without you. Terese Willis, will you marry me?
Terese looks shocked but also a bit charmed, especially when Gary brings out Great Aunt Ethel's ring from his pocket and shows it to her.
Erinsborough Police Station
Sonya takes a big deep breath before walking into the station. She finds Ellen at the desk and looks at her with tear-filled eyes.
SONYA: I need to make a confession. I'm the one that caused the accident at the Backpackers.
Ellen is stunned.
