No 30
Steph complains to Sonya about Elly, asking if she would have posed with a someone's boyfriend like that?
SONYA: Well, no, but Elly's Susan's niece.
Yes, well that explains it! She goes on to ask if she thinks "Susan's niece" would do that... Steph and I don't think Susan's niece-hood has any relevance. Sonya says people are crazy, and she should talk to Mark if she is worried. Steph asks Sonya if she can borrow the car, and she agrees.
Outside on the street, someone on ScaryCam™ watches her drive off as ominous music plays.
Then cue the bouncy music of the .
Waterhole
Steph shows Mark the photo of him and Elly. He asks Steph if he was supposed to tell Elly he didn't want a photo with her, and suggests it was more about getting back at her ex. Steph scoffs, and Mark asks if she's jealous. She denies it, but he says it's exactly the same as the situation with Belinda. She says that he never lets people off dangerous driving, so this photo is inappropriate.
MARK: Posing for a photo is nothing like what you did.
STEPH: Ah, right, so we're back to Belinda.
Mark says he has to get back to work.
Rebecchi Law
Aaron and Karl are discussing tactics for their bike lanes meeting, during which Aaron is using a step machine under his table. Toadie comes out to see if Aaron could possibly write the letters he'd asked for.
AARON: Any chance you can take a look in your in-tray where I left them 2 hours and 50 minutes ago.
Toadie finds some sweets that Aaron had hidden because they were bad for him, and the two boys fight a bit. Sonya comes in, and says she's been looking into the budgets, and with a little bit of reallocation of funds, there's enough for the bike-lanes.
SONYA: I've been hearing both sides of the argument, and if I had to make a call, I'd say, hands down, bike-lanes.
Karl and Aaron are thrilled. Toadie points out that whoever is losing funds is not going to be happy.
School
Elly approaches Xanthe, saying that Gary wants her to have extra tuition. Ben is standing nearby, so Xanthe says she'd rather not go to hers (Elly's). Elly agrees and Ben looks downcast.
Karl arrives, and tells Susan that Sonya is on board with the bike lanes.
KARL: ...with a little bit of robbing Peter to pay Paul.
Susan frowns, because it seems that she is "Peter". The subsidy for her remedial group might be discontinued. Oh, I thought she got the parents to pay for tutoring - so that's OK.
SUSAN: Yeah, the reason was unscheduled costs arising from a new community initiative. I wonder what that could be.
Karl tells her that this $5000 is a one-off and there was no obligation to renew her grant, but she scoffs and goes off in a huff.
Harold's
Clive is handing out flyers against the bike-lanes. Xanthe and Elly are talking about parties in Bondi. A boy, Cooper, comes past and Elly says he clearly likes Xanthe.
Steph comes over. She wants an apology from Elly for nearly running down her and Charlie. Ringo wasn't up to asking for an apology, was he?
ELLY: Is there anything I can do?
STEPH: Yeah, in future you could look where you're going. And while I'm at it, you could think about taking that pic of you and Mark you've posted on Instagram.
ELLY: I didn't hear any objections from him. You're not jealous are you?
Steph claims she's not, but tells Elly to "watch it".
No 26 garden
Elly asks a distracted Xanthe for her thoughts on The Tempest.
XANTHE: Well put it this way: if it was a film, I wouldn't go and see it.
She says she doesn't understand why Prospero doesn't magic up a ship or a magic carpet...
XANTHE: It's so dumb. OK, I'm dumb. It's why I'm in the remedial programme at school.
She says that everyone thinks she's dumb, and they think she wouldn't notice that someone was paid to take her to the formal. Elly listens sympathetically.
Harold's
Gary asks Ben how he's getting on with Xanthe. He says that Xanthe won't talk to him, which is unfair considering she stole his money to pay for the dress. Ben says she looked beautiful. Gary says Ben has to get her to take notice of him.
BEN: Short of hiring a marching band, how am I meant to do that?
GARY: I'd start by losing the sarcasm. It's not your most charming feature.
Ben says he's hanging around until Xanthe arrives.
GARY: Looking like a shag on a rock is not going to help your cause. Think big, be bold. Take it from a man who's made every kind of mistake you can imagine.
BEN: OK, so when the girl you liked found out you were paid by her dad to take her to the formal, how'd you sort that?
GARY: Never made that one. Point taken.
He tells Ben he used to write poems for Xanthe's mum, which came straight from the heart. Ben looks thoughtful.
Susan is on the phone, thanking someone for the opportunity to express her views - which will appear in the "online edition". She joins Steph, who brings up the subject of Elly.
SUSAN: Yeah, I guess posting selfies - that's how people network these days, isn't it?
STEPH: Hmm, yeah, but she was in Mark's back yard, hanging all over him like she'd known him for ever.
SUSAN: Oh Steph, I'm sure it was completely innocent. Elly's just... she's just a very friendly girl.
Lassiter's park
Elly and Xanthe are still discussing The Tempest, and Elly asks if Xanthe has ever cut herself off from her friends or family. Xanthe says that is literally describing her life. Elly says it's good, because they can explore the themes of the play.
XANTHE: My friends aren't talking to me. Well, technically I'm not talking to them. But still, it's bad.
She explains that Ben, Piper and her dad betrayed her. Elly knows about the formal, but says that she's on Xanthe's side. She points out that Xanthe has the power...
ELLY: ...show Benny boy how much fun you can have without him.
Xanthe says she likes hanging out with Elly, and it's the best tutoring session ever.
Erinsborough Council Building - Sonya's Office
Sonya has an office! Susan comes in to tell Sonya that Hilary is devastated about the funding cuts. I'm surprised: Hilary always struck me as the sort of person who would do her own complaining. Anyway Sonya says it's not easy weighing one cause against another. Susan scoffs at the idea that bike lanes are important. Sonya reminds her that education is a state government issue, but Susan says they need community support. She says she wouldn't have subsidised the new uniform if she'd known... Perhaps she ought to have waited until the grant was confirmed then. Susan tells Sonya that she's given the Star a comment. Sonya bangs her head on the desk.
SONYA: Oh, you know how they'll dress that up. It'll be, "Mayor puts the greenie vote ahead of the kids".
Susan insists she has to do what's best for the school.
No 28
Ben is singing along with his guitar. It's a love song about being alone. As he's singing, we see Xanthe and Cooper taking selfies in Harold's.
Ramsay Street
Steph drives up in Sonya's car (the Nursery van) and jogs over to catch up with Mark. She tells him that she's not the jealous type.
STEPH: It just killed me to think that Elly was trying to hook up with you, and even more so to think that you'd let her.
MARK: Steph, if you had any idea how much I want you, you'd know that there is no chance of that ever happening.
She says she was jealous because she loves him. He says maybe she can understand how he felt about Belinda. She apologises for that. He says he loves her and they kiss.
Community Centre
Outside, Clive is handing out fliers against the bike lanes. Karl and Aaron arrive, followed by Sonya. Clive hands her a copy of the West Waratah Star with the headline "Mayor back-peddles on school support". He asks her what she has to say. She sensibly doesn't mention that their editor missed a spelling mistake. She tells the crowd that no decisions have been made as yet.
No 28
Elly answers the door, dressed in just a towel. It's Mark, who tells her that he's very happy with Steph. Elly insists she was just "goofing around" with the photo. Mark says Steph wasn't impressed. Elly thinks she's making a big deal out of nothing. Mark says he doesn't want anyone thinking he's interested, because he's not. Elly promises no more selfies.
Harold's
Ben comes in with his guitar. He sees Xanthe with Cooper, and she touches his arm and smiles at him. Ben walks out. However, she sees him leave, and her smile fades.
Ramsay Street
Karl and Sonya are discussing the meeting. They congratulate each other on how it went - they won, albeit by a narrow margin. Karl says the council will have to follow. Sonya says he's underestimating Susan. They walk a bit further up the road and see "DIE" written on Sonya's windscreen.
Rebecchi Law
Aaron gets back from the meeting and tells Toadie that they won. Sonya rushes in and tells Toadie about the writing on the windscreen. There's a sound of glass shattering in Toadie's office. They rush in and find a brick on his desk. (Strange - I didn't hear it land.)
AARON: Maybe someone's not happy with the yes vote.
Promo
- Sonya wants to know how she can keep her family safe.
- Mark wants to investigate someone else
- Mark is annoyed with Aaron
- Jack boxing with Dustin, and Paige wanting a turn
- Dustin gets in a good punch on Paige
