- John is dressed as a priest
Mark "You're off this investigation" Brennan is interviewing Jacka aka Jackson Derek Hills, and Julie (individually), as there are no other detectives In This Episode™.
Paige is waiting for John's explanation - from the beginning.
"JOHN": Well, my name is Jack Callaghan. Father Jack Callaghan.
Roll credits and John's name has been changed to Jack, but he's not sporting his dog collar yet.
Julie explains that after getting the hotel from Paul, she wanted to rub his face in it, so she came up with the second tower plan. But when the council knocked it back, she was left with no cash flow, and couldn't afford to fix the boiler.
MARK: So you looked into your insurance policy?
JULIE: This wasn't without conscience. That's why I went to my church.
Yeah, so her usual priest was on holiday and...
Jack tells Paige he went to a Catholic school and after he graduated, he became a priest. He used to work with kids in shelters, including Dustin. Paige asks about the fire in his flashback, and he says that one of the shelters he worked in, burnt down, trapping a girl who had hair like Paige's.
JACK: I started questioning everything. My path, and God's plan.
He says he'd taken 6 months leave, and was staying with a priest in Elliot Park - and *he* is in Rome. Paige asks where Julie fits in.
Julie says she asked for forgiveness for what she was about to do, and claims she didn't intend to cause any harm.
JULIE: I just... all I wanted to do was blow the boiler so that I could trigger the payout.
Jack confirms that he could only counsel Julie.
Julie says when she left the church, she went to Braun and Bell to get the blueprints.
Jack says that he went after her to tell her there was another way. In his hurry, he forgot his wallet. He lost her at Lassiter's.
Julie says she met Jacka at the back of the hotel and gave him the blueprints.
JACKA: When Mrs Quill offered me ten grand to bang up the boiler, I wasn't going to refuse.
Jack says that Wendy told him Julie was in the Boiler Room. Paige asks why he didn't call the police, and he says he didn't expect her to cause an explosion.
Julie says when she heard the explosion, she realised Jacka had made a mistake(!)
MARK: Did you really think this was going to be a victimless crime?
JULIE: Of course! I was on the mezzanine myself, remember? He... he took my orders too far. He is the reason that people died.
In the other room, Jacka says that Julie refused to pay him, so he raided her cash box.
MARK: The cashbox was empty wasn't it?
JACKA: Yeah, someone else got there before me.
Julie claims that Tom must have taken the money, but she wasn't going to pay Jacka anyway. Just as a matter of detail, $10k doesn't sound like no cash to me.
JULIE: I reminded him that we were both in serious trouble and the only way to get out of it was to make someone else look guilty.
MARK: So you framed Paul Robinson.
JULIE: I just figured it could be his karma, you know, after all the other things he's done wrong. He was the prime suspect, anyway. I just gave a little more evidence.
She says that Jack was the only person who could link her and Jacka - and Jack had amnesia - so she paid Wendy to lie about his whereabouts.
MARK: Your actions caused the death of two people, one of which was your colleague's son.
JULIE: I didn't mean to hurt anyone.
JACKA: I never meant to hurt anyone.
Jack takes Paige's hand.
JACK: I never meant to hurt you Paige.
Julie and Jacka are charged with two counts of manslaughter by an unlawful and dangerous act and 31 counts of reckless conduct.
Paige and Jack are looking solemn.
PAIGE: So that's it then? That's everything.
Terese has a plateful of food, but no appetite. She comments to Piper that she'd hoped for some closure after the plaque ceremony... but then Julie was arrested. Piper asks if she thinks Paul is innocent.
TERESE: How can he be? The case is so strong against him, he must have been part of it somehow.
There's a knock on the door, and Mark arrives to tell them that Julie has confessed to causing the explosion and framing Paul.
MARK: Paul is innocent.
Terese looks faint, and gasps for breath. She rushes out, followed by Piper.
Next morning, Paige finds Jack sitting on a bench.
PAIGE: You're wearing the same clothes.
Well, how would you tell? Anyway, he gazes Brian Cox-like into the sky, and says he slept under the stars, as he often used to do. He says he's still waiting for his collar to feel right.
PAIGE: It doesn't?
JACK: My memories have come back, but uh...no it doesn't.
PAIGE: Well, maybe this just isn't the person you are anymore.
Jack says that his head is still spinning, and Paige says it must be weird for him. He waves at Sheila, who looks perplexed.
JACK: I think it must be weirder for everyone else, to be honest.
Sheila comes in, and tells Aaron she's seem something strange.
SHEILA: John wearing a priest's collar.
AARON: Uh, newsflash, he IS a priest.
SHEILA: Oh my God, if only I'd have known!
AARON: If you had have known, you probably wouldn't go around saying things like 'Oh my God'.
SHEILA: Imagine, a representative of the Lord living under my very roof!
Aaron says it must really mess with your head, figuring out who you are, and finding out you're a key witness to a massive crime. Sheila says if Xanthe had mentioned Tom's money earlier, the police would have solved it earlier. Wouldn't bet on it.
Gary arrives to see Aaron. He tells Aaron he wants to set up a meeting with Tom about the $10k.
Lauren is doing paperwork when Brad arrives. He tells her that Paul is being released in an hour and that he hasn't been fair to her.
LAUREN: You shut me out.
BRAD: I was gutted about what happened with Ned. I was frustrated about a lot of things. Then I lost Josh... and my dad. The world didn't make much sense any more. There were no rules. Just pain.
LAUREN: You're gonna get through this.
BRAD: What, without you?
She assures him that they are a partnership, and he promises he'll be there when she needs him. They kiss. He gets a text from Mark.
Aaron is chatting to Tom, who can't believe that Julie was responsible. Aaron says he thinks Gary is keen to settle Xanthe's debts. Gary arrives, and puts Tom straight.
GARY: The fact that you haven't reported the kids to the cops has me thinking that it's ill-gotten gains.
Tom says he'll go and report it now, because it's still a crime. Gary says that the police won't be interested in helping his family, which is sad but probably true in the Erinsborough Constabulary. He warns Tom to stay away from Xanthe.
Police Station - reception area
Julie thanks Brad, Terese, Piper and Paige for agreeing to see her. She says she wants to apologise face-to-face.
JULIE: I need you to know how terrible I feel. When I thought I had lost Tom, I...
At this, Piper stands up, walks over and gives her a Slap™ on the face. Brad pulls her away.
PIPER: How dare you tell my mother how hard things are for you. Because of you, I've lost two people I love more than anything in the world. And Matilda's going to grow up without knowing her father all because you couldn't pay your stupid bills. And worse than anything, you let someone else take the blame. You make me sick. Julie repeats that she's sorry, but Terese points out it won't bring back Josh. Mark takes Julie away, and they all gather round to comfort a tearful Piper.
Jack walks out of the Waterhole - he's removed his collar, and his clerical shirt is open. He gets a text from Paige inviting him to meet her in an hour. He looks over and sees Mark leading Julie through the complex to a police car. At the same time, two other cops (there are others?) are leading Jacka to another car. Jacka spots Steph coming out of Rebecchi Law (who knew it was even used?) and he sneers when she looks awkward. Mark and Steph look at each other, then Steph looks down.
Piper apologises for hitting Julie. Terese says it's OK.
TERESE: I would have hit her myself, but I'm trying to take the high road. I haven't done much of that lately, have I?
She says that Paul will never forgive her, and she doesn't blame him. Piper says she was grieving... and besides, Paul said he loved her. She says that was before.
Steph and Mark are arguing. He says that he followed protocol throughout, and the evidence pointed to Paul.
STEPH: I want you to admit that at a certain point you quit investigating the crime and focussed everything on getting Paul locked up.
Amy arrives to say she's going to pick up Paul, but Steph says Paul rang *her*. Steph invites Amy to a welcome-home barbie at hers (aka Toadie and Sonya's). Amy asks Mark if he was included and he says he doubts it.
Jack has his collar on, then he takes it off.
Jack and Paige walk along the footbridge. He comments how she's put her life on hold for him.
JACK: You've been everything to me, well to John, anyway. But that's not who I really am.
Then he says he needs to find out who Jack Callaghan is, so he's going home to see his family. She steps closer to kiss him, but he turns away, saying he can't do that yet.
JACK: I made a promise. I have to honour that.
PAIGE: All right, well... I want you to know that I ... I will be waiting.
He smiles at her and walks off.
Gary and Sheila are putting the bins out, down the road, Terese is getting her mail. Gary is nervous and Sheila asks why.
GARY: I sort of set him up. To get hurt.
SHEILA: By the other inmates? Why would you do a stupid thing like that?
GARY: Well you're the one who warned me how dodgy he was.
SHEILA: Because I didn't want you ending up his prison wife.
GARY: Do reckon he'll be mad?
SHEILA: Is the Pope a Catholic?
Steph arrives back with Paul. Gary says hopefully that prison may have changed Paul (obviously forgetting he'd been in before). Sheila says that Paul is not the sort of person you want to mess with. Paul scowls at Gary who smiles nervously, and then he stares over at Terese, who looks uncomfortable.
