Supreme Court Court
Julie arrives and asks what's going on. Brad says he has no idea. The judge says to Terese that she has something to say.
TERESE: Yes. Cecelia's testimony wasn't entirely true. I bribed her to add something.
Cue titles!
TERESE: She was lying when she said that Paul told her he caused the explosion. (Paul looks shocked.)
JUDGE: I would say that's the most crucial part of her statement in regard to this case. (Terese agrees with this.) You have committed a serious offence and I'm referring this to the DPP.
Toadie stands and asks to apply for a mistrial as the case can't be left to a jury based on the prosecution evidence now. The judge says the jury haven't been privy to this unfortunate interlude, the judge will direct the jury to disregard Miss Saint's testimony and get the jury back in. They will commence closing addresses.
No.32
Terese thanks Lauren for not judging her, she knows this has taken a toll on Brad and Lauren. Lauren says it's ok and Ned asks what trouble this will put Terese in. Terese doesn't know. Brad says they'll deal with whatever does happen. Terese says she can't have them implicated, she needs to assume full responsibility. Brad says they'll think about it later. Terese apologises for having a drink, she feels like she's let everyone down. Brad reassures her that it's understandable. Terese thanks him for being supportive. Ned asks if Paul will still be found guilty. Brad confirms this and Ned asks if the jury are confused, unreasonable doubt etc. Terese suggests Paul might walk free and Lauren reassures Terese he won't. Brad points out the rest of the evidence is damning enough. Terese says Paul walking free is her worst nightmare. Due to what Terese said it might come true.
Robinson's Motel
Amy says she was swayed by Cecelia's statement and Steph points out Amy didn't know Cecelia was lying. Jimmy says he never believed Paul was guilty. Amy comments Jimmy has always had faith in Paul. Steph says Amy's now prepared to give Paul the benefit of the doubt. Paul arrives and Amy tells him they've been catching up on everything. Jimmy asks Paul if he has time for a game of chess. Paul doesn't have time. He needs to return to court as the jury has reached its verdict.
Supreme Court Court
Paul is told to stand. The jury foreman is asked if they have reached a decision.
TIPSTAVE: On the charge of the manslaughter of Douglas Willis, how do you find the defendant?
FOREMAN: Guilty.
TIPSTAVE: On the charge of the manslaughter of Joshua Willis, how do you find the defendant?
FOREMAN: Guilty.
JUDGE: (Paul hears this in a faraway fog.) Paul Robinson, you have been found guilty on two counts of manslaughter, 31 counts of reckless conduct endangering life and one count of criminal damage with a view to gain... For this reason I sentence you to 18 years to be served concurrently with the other sentence I have imposed with a non-parole period of 14 years. (Paul starts sobbing as he is handed his sentence.)
Prison
Paul places his personal belongings into a tray. He takes off his clothes and hands the guards his false leg. He stands naked against the wall waiting to be checked.
The Waterhole (Outside)
Jacka tells the person on the phone that Paul got 18 years. Jacka says nobody's going to hear from Paul for a very very long time and laughs!
No.22
Terese says that she would be a nervous wreck if the jury had been out for days. Brad points out the evidence was overwhelming. Piper asks why Terese needed to bribe a witness. Terese admits she shouldn't have done it and it was an error of judgement. Piper reports that Imogen said Terese could go to jail. Brad says Imogen doesn't know all the facts and Lauren says Terese told the truth. Piper points out this happened when the trial was practically over. Brad says that Paul killed Josh and Doug. Piper agrees that someone did but she's not sure it was Paul. She is pretty convinced after the interview she did. Their voices are raised and Brad says Piper is naïve. Terese stops them by saying she wants today to be about them being a family together, to honour Doug and Josh. Piper goes upstairs. Brad says Piper is right about one thing and suggests they see a lawyer. Terese wants one day, she wants to go upstairs and freshen up. She tells Brad the sandwiches are in the fridge and asks him to put them out. Terese goes upstairs and Lauren says both she and Brad could also be prosecuted.
Ned arrives. He's heard about the gathering and wants to lend a hand. Lauren says Ned can take over as she needs to head into work. Brad had thought Margi (she does still exist!) was covering for Lauren. Margi is covering but Lauren needs to sort some things out. Brad asks if they can wait but Lauren says they can't wait. Ned is going to talk to Piper and Lauren leaves.
The Waterhole
Toadie, Sonya and Walter are sitting at a table. Walter asks Sonya where she is off to now. Sonya has a meeting as the council are putting on an event next week. Walter wants to know what is planned. They've got musos, food stalls, it's an event to get the community together after everything that's happened lately. Walter offers to provide with the music. Sheila comes over and wants some Aussie Crawl, Walter says he can handle that. Their flirting embarrasses Toadie and Sonya and Sonya laughs awkwardly! Toadie is going to pick Nell up from day-care and will order Sonya's plants. Sonya tells him he's the best. Sonya and Toadie have been talking and want Walter to come and stay with them so they can get to know him better. Walter would love that and thanks them. Toadie suggests they have a family picnic this afternoon. Walter thinks it's a great idea but he needs to do something first, he's promised to go and see Terese. He doesn't want to let her down. Sonya tentatively says he needs to do what is right. Walter asks if Sonya is worried about Terese's drinking. Sonya explains Terese has been on an emotional roller-coaster for a while. If Walter is serious about staying sober, maybe it's not the best idea to hang out with Terese.
No.22
Piper is back down in the kitchen with Terese, Ned and Brad. Terese says it's good to get closure though nothing will make up for losing Josh and Doug. Piper asks where Lauren is so Ned explains that she had to work. Terese says that she's sure Lauren would have been here if she could. Piper comments she's the only one who finds the get together weird. Terese points out they have a right to be happy. Josh and Doug can rest in peace. They share a toast to Josh and Doug and there's a knock at the door. Terese says it's probably Walter as she invited him. Piper says it's unbelievable. Brad says Terese has her own way of dealing with things so to go easy on her. It's Mark at the door and Terese invites him in. Mark is here to take Terese to the station for questioning.
MARK: You will be formally charged with perverting the course of justice.
Prison
Steph is visiting Paul. Paul asks how Amy and Jimmy are and Steph says they're good. Everyone is looking after them. Paul asks how Steph is and she's ok. She wants to focus on getting him out of here. Paul jokes he's not really up for a prison break! Steph points out he's got really good grounds for an appeal especially after what Terese did. Steph reminds him he's innocent and he doesn't belong here. Paul points out everyone says they're innocent! Steph says it's true in his case. Paul says she can help him if she wants to do something for him. He tells her to make a success of the business legitimately so it can't be taken from her. Steph says she'll see him tomorrow but he doesn't want her here, including anyone else. That also includes Amy and Jimmy. Steph reminds him they're his family. Paul says this isn't the place for them so Steph asks if he's giving up. Steph says he's not a quitter so he shouldn't start quitting now. Paul says he's done.
Harold's Café
Brad and Lauren are standing in the kitchen. Brad tells Lauren that Mark took Terese down to the police station and they're interviewing her now. Lauren checks if everyone left and Brad agrees. Piper wanted to take flowers to Josh's grave and Ned went too. Lauren quips by coming to work she didn't miss much! Brad comments she was anxious to get away. Lauren denies this and Brad wants to know more. Lauren admits she was keen to go but she figured it was a Willis family affair. It was better for Brad and Ned to go together. Brad wants to focus on them now the trial is over as he misses 'them'. Brad tells Lauren that they need no more distance and secrets. They agree and kiss.
Amy and Jimmy are at the counter. Amy tells Jimmy to remember to take everything with him. Steph arrives and tells Amy she's just been to see Paul. Amy says they're about to go and see Paul. They've bought him a cake and jokes about a file being in there! Steph advises Amy to maybe hold off as it's been a big day. Prison isn't really a place for kids. Amy points out she's doing this for Jimmy as he's worried about Paul. Amy now believes Paul might be innocent after what happened with Terese. Steph says Paul has made it clear he won't fight this and Amy doesn't think Paul should give up. Steph told Paul the same thing but he's not going to lodge an appeal. Amy says they'll see about that.
Lassiter's Complex
Terese and Mark are outside the Police Station. Terese is reading the document Mark has given her.
TERESE: Giving false testimony? Corruption of witnesses? Bringing false accusations? Attempting to pervert justice? (Terese sighs.) At this rate I'm going to be in prison longer than Paul.
Mark tells Terese due to her admission the judge might be lenient. Terese says she knows what she did was wrong but she couldn't stand back and let Paul get away with it. Mark tells her the documents about her court appearance will be mailed shortly and heads back inside.
Amy and Jimmy come out of Harold's Café. Amy asks Jimmy to wait there and she goes to speak to Terese. Amy tells Terese she might feel justified in bribing a witness but Jimmy has lost Paul. Paul doesn't want to see them. Paul's in jail and he's probably innocent. Amy hopes Terese can live with that and heads back to Jimmy.
Lauren is clearing the tables when Ned arrives. He asks how it's going as it's been full on. Lauren says she's glad it's all over. Ned has been thinking it would be better if he moved out. Lauren says Brad wouldn't want that so Ned asks what she wants. Lauren wants to forget about the kiss, Ned to forget about it as well and pretend it ever happened.
Terese is looking at the document when Julie arrives. Terese comments Julie must have heard what happened. Terese feels her world has been tipped upside down, after everything that's happened she's now faced with these charges. Terese guesses she will get through it, as she has with everything else. Julie says after everything Terese has been through it must be hard. Julie suggests perhaps Terese can now begin to heal and Terese thanks Julie for understanding. Terese might not agree when she hears what Julie has to say. Julie has to let Terese go. Terese can't believe it and Julie says she hasn't got a choice. Terese has interfered with a police investigation, they can't be seen to be condoning that type of behaviour. Terese angrily points out Julie knew and practically applauded what she was doing. Julie apparently has no recollection of that! Julie says there's been enough scandal attached to the Quill name. With the hotel about to reopen, they can't afford to be associated with Terese. Now the truth is out there Julie is sorry but she has no alternative. She has to terminate Terese's position and leaves.
Prison
Paul is let into the visiting room where Amy and Jimmy are waiting. He asks what they're doing here and they say they bought Paul a cake. He thanks them for the cake. Jimmy asks to play a game of chess which Paul happily accepts. He suggests Jimmy sets up on another table whilst Paul talks to Amy.
Paul tells Amy she shouldn't have brought Jimmy as prison isn't a place for kids. Amy reminds Paul Jimmy is his grandson and she wanted Jimmy to spend time with Paul. Amy is sorry she didn't come to the trial, Paul is glad she didn't go. Amy can't believe what Terese did, Paul had no idea how much Terese hated him. Amy says Terese must have had her doubts if she went to those lengths to incriminate Paul. Paul wryly comments the jury didn't! Amy had doubts but she says she should have believed Paul and Amy hopes he can forgive her. Paul points out after everything he's done there is nothing to forgive. He wonders how he can expect anyone to forgive him. Amy says they charged Terese but Paul doesn't think that will achieve anything except inflict pain on someone who's had more than their share. Amy wants Paul to stop thinking of others and focus on himself, he needs to appeal the conviction. Paul says he doesn't as this is karma. He might be innocent of the explosion but he has got away with many others. Amy says they should try and asks if he wants to be free. Paul says if he behaves himself he'll be free in 14 years. Amy and Jimmy can't visit him anymore and they need to cut all ties. Amy tries protesting but Paul says it needs to be this way.
AMY: Please don't shut us out Dad.
Paul is touched she has called him 'Dad' but wants them to get on with their lives without him.
No.22
Walter has brought some flowers in a pot for Terese so she thanks him. She says they're gorgeous and is so glad he's here as she's had the most hideous day. Terese needs some serious cheering up and wants them to have some champagne. Walter says he's not drinking and can't stay. Walter knows Terese is going through a really hard time and he wants to be her friend. He's worried where this is heading but she says she knows what she's doing. Walter tentatively says he knows she's very fragile. Terese knows he doesn't want to take advantage, it's sweet and doesn't want him to worry about her. He doesn't want them to end up doing something they regret. Terese reassures him she won't. Apparently when you've been through trauma you shouldn't leap straight into a relationship. Walter needs to straighten himself out and focus on family. Walter apologises and Terese says it's fine. Walter leaves. Terese looks at the bottle of wine in a bucket of ice and heads towards it. She pours herself a glass.
Harold's Café

Paul is in a bad way and told Steph to get on with her life. Mark says it's good advice. Steph wryly comments Mark thinks Paul got what he deserves. Mark says it doesn't matter what he thinks. Steph says it matters to her. Mark says they won't agree on this, that won't change but he still wants them to work. Steph does too. Mark goes to the counter.
Julie arrives and tells Steph she intends to sue Paul for damages now the court case is over. Steph says there's probably nothing left so it won't do Julie much good. Julie points out there is the motel and Steph says Paul has signed ownership over to her.
JULIE: One way or another I intend to be compensated for my losses. If that means going after you well then I will.
Julie leaves as Mark looks on.
