Previously on Neighbours
- Ajay tells Priya to stay away from Rani, and punches Paul in the face
- Aidan tells Chris he can deal with the hospital hearing himself, as he's not needy like Chris is
- Karl tells Summer that Carmel isn't interested in him
Ajay's reading a text from Priya, who says she's at Susan's if he wants to talk. Karl comes in, telling Ajay to get changed - reminding him that they're playing a gig for the Christmas appeal at the community centre. With all the drama, Ajay's forgotten, and he tells Karl he'll have to pull out. Karl asks why, and Ajay's forced to explain he has to be here for Rani, because Ajay asked Priya to leave after finding out she was sleeping with Paul! Struggling to find the words to respond, Karl says he'll cancel the gig, and tells Ajay to call him if he needs anything. Ajay gives Karl a bundle of Priya's work papers and asks if he wouldn't mind passing them on via Susan.
Karl calls round with Priya's school papers; Susan's at work but Carmel is there. Carmel thinks it's very generous of Susan to have taken Priya in, commenting that Susan knows what the Kapoors are going through. Hastily adding that she isn't judging Karl, she offers him a cup of tea. Priya comes out of the bedroom, and Karl hands her the papers; Carmel offers her a tea too, but embarrassed to see Karl, Priya quickly disappears back into the bedroom.
KARL: Seems to have come out of the blue for both of them.
CARMEL: Has it really, or is that just us? The only ones who know what a marriage is really like are the two people in it.
Karl explains he has to go, and mentions that Ajay has pulled out of their gig at the community centre. Carmel suggests that the distraction of the gig might be just what Ajay needs.
Karl comes back to see Ajay, repeating Carmel's idea that playing the gig might help Ajay take his mind off what's happened. He still doesn't want to leave Rani alone, but Karl suggests it might do her some good to see Ajay getting on with things. Ajay agrees to do the gig, but isn't over the moon about it.
Aidan is getting dressed up in a shirt and tie. Chris offers to make him a sandwich.
KYLE: Oi! No happy couples in the man-cave! And no lovey-dovey sandwich-making, either!
CHRIS: Is that your way of saying you ate all the ham?
Aidan explains to Kyle that he has his disciplinary hearing at the hospital today. Chris is keen to walk with him to the hospital, but Aidan stops him mid-sentence, as if to remind him that he wants to deal with it alone. Aidan says he'll meet Chris at Charlie's later to tell him how it went. Once he's gone, Chris complains to Kyle that Aidan still won't let him help.
Rani comes out of her bedroom to find that Ajay's gone out. He's left her a note, saying he's at the community centre and asking her to come along if she wants to. Sophie calls round; she's heard about Harley being shipped back to Frankston and wants to check Rani's okay. Rani seems annoyed with her. Sophie tells her she didn't tell Priya anything about the party she and Harley were going to, but Rani says she doesn't care about the party - and that Sophie's the last person she wants to talk to. Rani tells her to get out, but Sophie demands to know why...
Andrew and Paul are just leaving the house for work, when Sophie rushes over to confront Paul about his affair with Priya! Andrew's face drops in surprise as he listens, and realises why Ajay punched Paul. Kate comes up the drive and is equally shocked to hear the news. Sophie's furious that Paul has split up the Kapoors and ruined her friendship with Rani, but Paul simply says it's none of her business, and drives off.
Outside, Karl and Ajay have arrived for the gig, when Paul turns up to confront Ajay - accusing him of deliberately turning Rani against Sophie. A heated argument begins, and Karl tries to convince Paul to walk away. Ajay offers Paul another smack in the face, but decides he isn't worth it, and heads inside.
KARL: You proud of yourself, are you?
PAUL: Oh, shut up, Karl.
KARL: You ruined his marriage!
PAUL: Oh, look who's talking! Smartest move Susan ever made was leaving you.
Paul walks off.
Chris and Andrew are having a drink when Aidan comes in. It's good news; his suspension has been lifted, and he'll be back at work tomorrow - although he will have to keep his head down during a probation period. Chris is thrilled and hugs him; Andrew's pleased too, and apologises again for Aidan having to go through that. Aidan replies that a couple of rounds of drinks should make them even! Aidan admits that having the union rep speak up for him may have made all the difference, and goes to get himself a drink. While he's at the bar, Chris complains that Aidan didn't thank him for suggesting Aidan speak to the union rep in the first place. Andrew says he probably just forgot, and suggests Chris should just be happy that the hearing went Aidan's way.
Indoors, Karl and Ajay discuss which songs to perform, but Ajay is distracted, and admits he doesn't really want to be here - he feels he should be at home with Rani. At that moment, Rani comes in, and smiles at Ajay from the doorway. He smiles back, and has a change of heart, telling Karl he'll play after all. They start playing the song they dedicated to their daughters (the one Susan got all worked up about some months ago when she thought it was a love song for her). Karl sings the first couple of lines, before Ajay joins in, singing the words directly to Rani. Everyone claps, and Rani smiles.
Later, Karl and Ajay perform a rendition of Jingle Bells to finish off the gig, and soon have the audience - including Rani and Carmel - singing along. Afterwards, Ajay and Rani hug - he thanks her for coming and she says he was great. Carmel congratulates Karl on his singing skills, meanwhile, and Karl says she was right about the performance helping Ajay forget his troubles. Carmel offers to help Karl pack up the equipment.
Ajay and Rani head homewards, discussing what to do for dinner, when Sophie approaches. Ajay goes inside, while Sophie says she's sorry for what Paul's done and says she's given him an ear-bashing. Rani also apologises, for shouting at Sophie earlier. Soph suggests they go and hang out at Harold's, but Rani says she needs to keep Ajay company right now. Sophie gives Rani a present - a 'Best of Bollywood' DVD - and tells Rani to text her when she wants to hang out. Rani smiles.
Chris comes in to find Kyle vacuuming; Kyle tells him that Sheila's left a list of chores for Chris, too, which Chris isn't thrilled about. He explains Aidan got his job back, but confides in Kyle that he's still upset about Aidan telling him to back off when he wanted to help. Kyle tells Chris that Jade was just the same when they got together; she wouldn't let him do anything for her. Kyle suggests Chris should insist on talking to Aidan about it, adding that they're good together and will work it out. Chris still looks depressed.
While Karl nips to the bathroom, Carmel hurriedly checks her make-up, and starts moving all the bedding off of the sofa. Karl returns and tells her not to tidy up on his account. Carmel remarks that the Kapoors are lucky to have friends like Karl and Susan, once again lamenting the memories it must bring up of their own separation(s)! Karl doesn't really want to talk about that.
CARMEL: Oh, no - like I said earlier today, Karl, there's no judgement here. We're only human - the whim of our desires.
She begs him not to leave so soon, as she's bought a tart from Harold's which she's 'dying to devour'. Despite Karl's attempts to leave, she insists he sit down and share it with her.
KARL: I still can't work out where you're all going to sleep?
CARMEL: Well I'm bunking in with Susie. Haven't done that since we were girls! Does she still kick in her sleep?
KARL: Well unless things have changed dramatically, I imagine so, yes.
CARMEL: Hmm, I'll wear my heels to bed.
Karl thinks it's ridiculous that Susan, Priya and Carmel are all cramped up in the flat when there's a spare room at his house, and suggests that Carmel stay there while Priya is at Susan's. Carmel practically bites his hand off in accepting the offer, and rushes to pack her things!
Karl and Carmel polish off the tart, along with a bottle of red wine. She comments that they'll have to limit such treats if they both want to keep trim for the dating scene, but Karl says he's done with the dating - he doesn't have the energy for any more awkward rendezvouses. Carmel says that it's just a case of knowing what you're looking for and finding something in common. Karl jokes that this evening has been one of the best dates he's had in a while. He says it's time for bed, and bids her goodnight before retiring to his bedroom. She looks disappointed, but spies the remainder of the wine on the side, grabs the bottle and two glasses, and pauses before walking straight into Karl's room!
