Previously on Neighbours
- Susan's sister Carmel is back in Erinsborough, while Karl is looking for love
- Georgia tells Karl that Aidan used a false name to process Andrew's blood tests
Aidan goes to see Karl, who asks him if he's responsible for processing 'Ben Anderson'. He admits to giving Andrew unofficial advice about his epilepsy and to submitting the blood sample under the false name, saying he was only trying to help, since Andrew wouldn't help himself. Karl's sympathetic, but says it was against hospital rules and professional practice obligations, and that Aidan should have come to him about Andrew instead.
Aidan explains about Andrew threatening him; but nonetheless Karl says he's obliged to report the incident to the hospital board, which could lead to Aidan being suspended. Karl sends Aidan home in the meantime, and says he should hear by the end of the day. Outside, Rhys wants to know why Aidan's leaving in the middle of his shift, and Aidan tells him to ask Karl.
Summer and Chris are playing pool when Aidan comes in. Chris is surprised he's not at work; Aidan makes a vague excuse that there's an 'admin thing' going on, but Chris isn't buying it and he's quickly forced to explain what has happened. Chris is annoyed that Aidan knew about Andrew's epilepsy the whole time and didn't tell him, and is also worried about what will happen to Aidan now. Aidan plays it down, saying he'll probably just get a slap on the wrist and is unlikely to be suspended. Chris is furious that Andrew let Aidan go along with it all, but Aidan says the choice was his, and leaves.
Susan and Carmel are enjoying a mild argument and a coffee, as Carmel tells Susan about a new bar she wants them to check out tonight. Susan makes excuses, saying she has deadlines to meet, but Carmel thinks she needs to adjust her work-life balance. Carmel decides she's going to come and see Susan in action at the office, but Susan's not keen on that idea - and says she'll see her later.
Karl arrives home to be greeted by a barrage of questions from Summer about the Aidan situation. At first he says he's not allowed to talk about it, but quickly relents, defending his decision to go to the board with the matter. He says he didn't have a choice and that Aidan shouldn't have got himself into that position; it's now up to the board whether he keeps his job. Karl goes for a walk.
Karl comes in to see Susan - she's busy now she's lost her deputy editor, but coping. He wants some advice on Aidan.
KARL: I need someone who's not going to take the moral high-ground.
KARL: She's worse than you. And you've had your sanctimonious moments over the years!
Susan laughs and agrees to go for lunch with Karl while they discuss it.
Kate answers a knock at the door; it's Chris, who's come to see Andrew. Chris immediately starts laying into him, demanding to know how he convinced Aidan to help him hide his epilepsy. Andrew admits that he was desperate to keep it from Paul, so told Aidan he'd shop him to the hospital if he told anyone about his condition.
CHRIS: So you blackmailed him?
ANDREW: Chris, you know what my dad's like, and you know what he expects -
CHRIS: You are unbelievable. You are so damn selfish - you don't give a stuff about anyone else's life, do you? Aidan is under review; he could be suspended, or worse, fired, because he tried to help you.
ANDREW: I'm sorry for that - I am.
CHRIS: It's not good enough.
Chris marches out, leaving a nonplussed Kate staring at Andrew in disbelief.
Having told Susan all about the situation with Aidan, Karl moves on to slagging off Georgia for being such a scatterbrain, and says the pair of them are like a couple of kids. Susan's keen to get back to the office with her sandwich, but Karl encourages her to sit down for a while. At that moment Carmel shows up, and Susan foists her onto Karl so she can get back to work. Carmel says she always enjoys a chat, and sits down next to Karl, clearly enjoying his company.
Chris is ranting about Andrew's behaviour to Tash and Summer.
TASH: He was scared, Chris.
CHRIS: Andrew blackmailed my boyfriend, and you're defending him?
Tash points out that Aidan chose to help Andrew in the first place, and Chris wants to know if Tash knew about the blackmail - she says she didn't until later. Chris says that Andrew being worried about Paul's reaction is no excuse; Aidan could lose his job. But Tash sticks up for Andrew, saying that's not his fault. Summer thinks Andrew behaved unfairly but that Aidan also has to take some of the blame himself for what happened.
CHRIS: Aidan saved his life, and now he's being punished. I mean, that's pretty clear to me. If you guys can't see it, then - I dunno.
Carmel is telling Karl how well he's handled the situation with Aidan and Georgia, particularly since he knows them personally. She tells him he's a good man, and that they'll understand why he had to go to the board. Susan pops back out of the office, but sees Carmel and Karl are chatting away happily, and decides to go back inside and get on with her work.
KARL: Thank you.
CARMEL: What on earth for?
KARL: For listening.
CARMEL: If Susan needs a bit of distance, I'm happy to fill that space.
KARL: Careful. I might take you up on that.
CARMEL: Any time, Karl. My pleasure.
Chris is dismayed to find that even Aidan is defending Andrew. Aidan says he agreed to help Andrew in the first place - and adds that Chris yelling at Andrew won't improve the situation.
CHRIS: Babe, you could be in serious trouble.
AIDAN: Nothing is certain until the board makes their decision. And you shouldn't be angry at Andrew or Tash or anyone else on my account. What I did shouldn't get between you and your friends.
CHRIS: Well they're your friends as well. I'm just standing up for you.
AIDAN: Well I don't need you to!
CHRIS: You're my boyfriend! What am I supposed to do?
Aidan insists he won't have Chris wrecking his friendships over this, and tells him they're going to go and sort it out.
Andrew is talking to Summer and Tash; he's feeling guilty about what's happened to Aidan and swears he didn't mean for it to happen. Summer says they tried to tell Chris that, but that it didn't go down well.
Aidan and Chris turn up at the door. Aidan tells Andrew he has no hard feelings towards him, and Andrew apologises again for the mess he's caused. Aidan's just glad he's on the proper meds now, and says the review will turn out okay once the board knows the circumstances. Chris grudgingly agrees that if Aidan doesn't have a problem, then all's cool with Andrew.
TASH: As nice as it was seeing you go all He-Man, standing up for your boyfriend.
CHRIS: Well I was actually going to shout drinks at Charlie's, but for that, you're up first!
Andrew can't come as Paul won't let him leave the house, but the others all head for Charlie's. As they leave, however, Aidan gets a text from Karl: "Hospital board has made their decision. My office ASAP."
Carmel tells Susan that Karl had to rush off to the hospital, after they'd had some cake and chatted some more. Carmel can't believe how friendly Susan and Karl's relationship is despite their separation, whereas she and her own estranged husband barely speak to one another. Carmel's thrilled for Susan and her new-found freedom, but thinks Karl may need someone to talk to now he's alone - and Susan thanks her for stepping in. She's not so grateful, however, when Margie hands Carmel one of Susan's tops which she's just had dry-cleaned contrary to the advice on the label, after spilling a drink down it last night!
Aidan worriedly awaits Karl's news. It's not good - the board is conducting a full investigation, which will take about two weeks. Until then, Aidan is suspended. Karl tells him he may still only get a warning, but that the worst-case scenario is that he would lose his job and be unable to nurse again. Karl says he'll let him know the outcome, and adds that he's sorry. Aidan says it's okay, and leaves sadly.
Chris is drinking alone when Aidan comes in, as the others have gone home. Aidan explains he's just had a meeting with Karl, but can't face telling Chris the truth - and says he's been let off with a warning. Chris is thrilled, and gives him a hug; he suggests they get takeaway to celebrate. Aidan agrees; he says he has to make up his hours at work from earlier, but will call Chris afterwards.
Later, Rhys comes in, and is surprised to hear Chris claim that Aidan got off with a warning. He tells Chris the truth - that Aidan's been suspended and that the board has launched an investigation. Chris is confused and upset that Aidan has lied, and tries to ring him, but only gets his voicemail. He leaves Aidan a message asking him to call back.
Chris bangs on the door late at night, waking up Tash and Summer. He tells them Aidan's disappeared; he won't answer his phone, and his parents and neighbours haven't seen him. Chris is worried Aidan might do something stupid. Chris can't drive because his licence was revoked, so he asks if Tash and Sum will drive him around so they can look for Aidan. Karl gets up too, and says they can take his car. Summer and Tash go to get dressed while Chris looks worried.
