Outside Fitzgerald Motors/Dial- A- Kyle
Summer and Andrew see the surveyor guy again (what a coincidence!) and Summer goes over to talk to him about the corruption story. She introduces herself as a friend of Dane Canning.
SUMMER: Look, Dane did tell me what you were saying about the council's bribes.
TONY: Did he.
SUMMER: Yeah, I just wanted to hear it for myself. Is it true?
TONY: If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck...
SUMMER: So the money changed hands specifically over the re- zoning decision?
TONY: That's what I hear.
SUMMER: Right. Can I quote you for that?
TONY: Quote me? What for?
SUMMER: To verify the corruption claim!
TONY: Hang on, are you a reporter?
SUMMER: Student reporter.
TONY: Sorry, I can't help you.
He hurriedly gets into his van.
SUMMER: I need your help!
TONY: You're not hearing me!
SUMMER: If these claims are true, then they need to be exposed!
TONY: I was just winding the bloke up!
SUMMER: *Did* you hear something?
TONY: In the tearoom, from the cleaner. But I found out after she'd just been fired, so...
SUMMER: So she probably made the whole thing up.
TONY: You can't use any of it officially, and you can't use my name.
He drives off. Summer slinks off, dejected.
As they walk away, she and Andrew see Toadie.
TOADIE: How did you go yesterday? With the retraction? You did broadcast it, didn't you?
SUMMER: ...Yeah, of course I did!
TOADIE: Summer, there is no corruption, no bribery, nothing.
SUMMER: I know.
TOADIE: Drop in the council. Have a look at the plans. Meet with the councillors, they'll be more than happy to talk with you when they've got time. There is no story.
He walks off.
Harold's Store
Summer is worried about not issuing a retraction yesterday. She's publicly slandered a councillor with no proof. Andrew says it doesn't matter as hardly anyone listens to PirateNet! Anyway, if it was that big a deal, she'd have heard something about it by now. Summer allows that this is true.
Just then, Lou comes over and shows them today's copy of The Erinsborough News. The headline reads, "Local Radio Alleges Council Corruption" and the author is Paul Robinson.
No.30
Toadie arrives home. He lays down his copy of the Erinsborough News, but doesn't look at it. He chats to Sonya about his day instead. As he's taking the elastic band about off the newspaper, Sonya gets a bit frisky and Toadie tosses the paper away and converts the sofa into a sofa bed. They lie down, kissing.
Garden of Number 28
Mal is feeding a pig and trying to get Catherine on the phone. Over the fence next- door, Jade getting washing on the line. Mal leans over the fence and says hello to Jade. He tells her that it's still a bit of a war zone in Number 28. He asks he what she'd do if they were her parents. Jade doesn't want to get involved but vaguely suggests that a distraction might be a good idea.
No.28
Susan has decided to help make a costume for Ben. Mal tells Susan that Catherine is going to Paris soon and suggests Susan takes French lessons(!) Later, Mal tells Karl that he should go down to the library and Skype Libby and Ben. Both Karl and Susan separately tell Mal that they know what he's doing - he trying to provide a distraction for them. They both tell him that they'll just deal with things in their own way.
Outside The Erinsborough News (which appears to have moved next door to Lassiter's?!)
Summer confronts Paul and tells him that he used her. He tells her that he was well within his rights to report what he heard on PirateNet! He does tell her that she will sort things out though - she's only a community radio station with a small audience. He suggests that she "goes with her gut". Hmmm, very helpful.
Harold's store
Sonya sees Susan reading at a table. They get into conversation about the book she's reading - Sonya has also read it. They agree that it's fun to talk about books and Sonya suggests that they start a book club - there must be some other keen readers in the area. Susan says she might be a bit busy, but finally agrees.
No.28
Mal is texting Catherine when Susan gets home. She tells him that she and Sonya are starting a book club. However, she thinks Mal has put Sonya up to it, but he assures her he had nothing to do with it. But Susan is pleased anyway. Mal has a thoughtful look on his face. He deletes his text to Catherine and texts Jade instead - "Book club - top idea".
Charlie's
Dane and Lou chat about Paul's article in the paper. Toadie comes in and introduces himself to Dane.
DANE:(with hostility) You're the bloke that's trying to put Kyle out of business.
LOU: Mate, he's just trying to make him see sense.
Dane tells Toadie that he'll be keeping an eye on him for Kyle! Toadie picks up the paper and finally reads the headline. Just then, his phone goes, and it's work giving him an absolute earful! He heads off straight away.
PirateNet
Summer is about to broadcast a retraction.
SUMMER: I should have done this yesterday!
She regrets lying to Toadie. Andrew tells her to calm down, but just then Toadie comes in.
TOADIE: Summer. Stop what you're doing. Now.
SUMMER: I'm about to go on air!
TOADIE: I said, stop.
The "On Air" light goes out.
TOADIE: You told me you'd issued a retraction.
SUMMER: I know, I'm doing it now!
TOADIE: Well, it's too late to do it now. You have no idea what you've done.
SUMMER: Look, I'm so sorry, I really thought there was something going on!
TOADIE: I told you it was rubbish. *I* told you, Summer.
SUMMER: Yeah, I know, OK? I'm trying to fix it!
She shows him her script.
SUMMER: Read this, I'm going to take back everything that I said!
TOADIE: That's not going to make any difference.
ANDREW: Well, then, call the council, right, tell them to listen in...
TOADIE: No, it's too late! You've defamed the council. Not to mention the developers.
SUMMER: I'm sorry!
TOADIE: So am I. The council are going to shut down the station.
ANDREW: What?
SUMMER: No, they can't do that!
TOADIE: They fund it, they can do what they like!
SUMMER: I'm not the only one that uses the station, there are other schools involved. They can't punish everyone for this!
TOADIE: Well, that's their decision.
SUMMER: (desperately) Tell them to ban me! They can't shut down the station!
TOADIE: You should have thought of that before you said what you said, Summer! It's done, I'm sorry.
ANDREW: From when?
Toadie takes a legal document from his inside pocket.
TOADIE: Effective immediately.
