Number 24 - Kate's Bedroom
Mark checks his watch, noting that it's just after 6:30. He's nervously waiting for an answer from Kate and reminds her that it's too dangerous for him to stay in Erinsborough. Kate says she can't leave Sophie behind but Mark says she can come with them. Kate then asks what happens to her friends, work and career. Mark knows it's a lot to take in but it's the only way they can be together.
KATE: I don't want to lose you.
MARK: After everything we've been through, the only thing I need is you.
They kiss and Kate takes a moment before saying she'll come with him. Mark tells her they've got half an hour and she can only pack the essentials. They head out towards the front door where they bump into Sophie. Mark leaves to pack a bag and Kate drops the bombshell on her sister that they have to leave town - tonight.
Number 26
Mark dashes inside and heads for the bedroom to fetch his things. The time is 6:34.
Number 24
Sophie doesn't understand what the urgency is with Mark but Kate says she can't go into details right now, she'll just have to trust her. Sophie's understandably upset and confused and says that she can't just pack up her life in a bag. Kate says she wouldn't be asking her sister something this huge if there wasn't any other way.
Number 26
Mark shoves clothes into a black gym bag and rifles through the lounge room shelves to find all his important documents and passport. He thinks about packing them before realising there's not much point.
Number 24
Sophie says she's not going, but Kate tells her the decision has been made and they're leaving town with Mark. Kate asks her to pack a bag but Sophie boldly says Kate can go ahead and flee but she's not coming with her. It's 6:36pm.
Number 26
Mark opens up his address book to where his mum and dad's number is kept, not knowing whether to call them. Jade arrives home unexpectedly, causing Mark to panic and shove the gym bag under the kitchen table. Jade says a client cancelled on her and asks Mark if he wants to see a movie, but he says he's got plans with Kate. Noticing the luggage, Jade wonders why Mark's got Kyle's gym bag so Mark lies and says he needs a change of clothes for a double shift. Satisfied for now, Jade heads off to have a bath. The time is 6:38pm.
Number 24
Kate is still trying to convince Sophie to go along with the plan.
KATE: You know how much he means to me.
SOPHIE: You've been back together for like five minutes.
KATE: I never stopped loving him.
She packs some things and wonders aloud where the photo of the Ramsay kids with their mum is. Sophie ignores her and reminds Kate she's not going. Checking the clock (6:39pm), Kate tries pleading with her but something dawns on Sophie.
SOPHIE: You'd really go without me?
KATE: I love him.
SOPHIE: I'm your sister you can not just run out on me.
KATE: This is my one chance to be with Mark. If he leaves tonight on his own then I'll probably never see him again.
SOPHIE: So you're choosing him over me?
KATE: No I don't want to have to choose. I don't want to leave you here. I don't want to have to pack up my life and leave everything behind either but what do I have if I don't go? If we don't go.
SOPHIE: Don't put this on me.
KATE: I don't know what else to do, Soph. I love him.
Sophie sadly says she doesn't want Kate to leave her, but Kate says she won't. She hugs her sister and says she won't go without her, "I couldn't do that", but she is begging Sophie to do this for her. Conflicted, Sophie says she doesn't know. The time says 6:40pm. Kate rushes outside.
Number 26
Kate bursts through the door and tells Mark she needs more time for Sophie to process things, but Mark says they don't have any extra hours up their sleeve. Jade unknowingly interrupts their conversation by waltzing out to ask Mark if he stole her shampoo. She soon realises she's stumbled on something important, though, and leaves them to it. Kate asks Mark if they can catch up later, but Mark says once he's gone he's gone for good. He lets her know the meeting point and says that it's safer if they arrive there separately: "If you're late they'll make me leave". Kate promises him she'll somehow convince Sophie and be on time. Before Kate runs out, Mark kisses her and says he loves her, which Kate echoes. 6:42pm - tick, tick, tick...
First Commercial Break
Number 24
Sophie moodily watches Kate from the hallway while she looks through her bag and wonders what else to pack. Sophie sprints out the door before Kate can stop her, bumping into Lou on the way. Kate wants to chase after her sister but Lou asks her to help him with the grocery bags he's carrying because of his back. Lou prattles on about the flounder he's bought for dinner, but Kate's barely listening, trying to call Sophie but getting no response.
Number 26
Mark puts a framed photograph of himself and Kate into his bag before getting the address book and giving his parents a ring. He gets an answering machine, though, so leaves a sad message letting them know he's sorry for not visiting more often but work's been hectic. He says to remind his dad that he still owes him a beer and for his mum to take care of herself. Hanging up, Mark takes all his personal documents & the address book and sets a lighter to them over the sink so they're destroyed. Sophie suddenly appears behind him and demands to know how he can do this to her and Kate.
Number 24
Lou notices Kate's packing a bag and asks her what's up. Kate lies and says she's giving away some clothes to the Salvos, but panics when Lou says he can drop it off for her in the morning. She snatches the bag off him in frustration and says she'll do it herself, so Lou jokingly tells her to keep her hair on. Kate freaks out a bit more when she sees that it's 6:46pm.
Number 26
Sophie knows this whole mess has something to do with Mark's work and she doesn't think it's fair to make Kate pick between her and Mark. He says it doesn't have to be that way, but Sophie doesn't understand why she has to give up everything. She witnessed the thinly veiled goodbye phone call he made to his mum and doesn't want that to be her and Kate. It's not fair to either of them.
When Sophie leaves, Jade walks out and wonders if she can smell something burning. Mark pretends he was making toast and assures her that nothing's wrong when she asks him if he's OK.
Number 24
Kate's trying to call Sophie again when she arrives back home. Sophie says she needed time to think but still doesn't have an answer for Kate, much to her dismay.
Number 26
Kyle gets in from work and sees his gym bag on the couch. Mark explains the whole 'double shift' thing but Kyle says he knows how much stuff his bag holds and it looks full to the brim. It doesn't take Kyle long to realise that Mark's skipping town because of the harassment he's been subjected to. Mark admits he's being put into protective custody.
KYLE: What, so you just walk out on your whole life?
MARK: Pretty much.
KYLE: Does Kate know?
MARK: She's coming with me. Sophie too hopefully.
KYLE: Man this is full on.
Mark warns him that he can't say a word to anyone about it, and hands Kyle a note. It's his cover, explaining that he got some big promotion so Jade won't get too suspicious. Mark gathers the bag and pats Kyle on the arm, "You're a smart guy, Kyle, don't ever doubt it". Kyle stands there in shock for a moment before catching Mark at the door and hugging him, signifying their mateship and his respect for the enormity of what Mark's about to undertake. Kyle wishes him luck and tells him to stay safe.
Number 24
Kate's still searching for her family photo album but Lou says he thinks it's in her bedroom. When she ducks into the hall, Sophie slouches out to the kitchen. Calling her "pumpkin", Lou chats to her about dinner, but Sophie has more important things on her mind. Lou comments that he'll have to break out the big guns for dessert judging by how unhappy the girls are at the moment.
SOPHIE: You're not going anywhere are you?
LOU: Not that I know of.
SOPHIE: I mean if Kate wanted to do her own thing you'd still be around?
LOU: Sweetheart I'll always be here for you. And so will Kate. I don't need to tell you how much that girl's done for you over the years. I also know how close you two are. If you've had a tiff, don't worry, you'll get over it quicksmart. As long as you stick together.
Sophie quietly contemplates his words.
Second Commercial Break
Number 24 - Kate's Bedroom
The photo album has been found and stored in Kate's bag, but when Sophie finds her sister she sees that she's been crying. Sophie says she doesn't know what she'd do without Kate, she's been her rock ever since their mum died, so that's why she's going to go with her. Kate asks if she's sure but Sophie says they're sisters and they have to stick together. Kate smiles and thanks her before telling her to quickly pack a bag and then throw it out the bedroom window so Lou doesn't see.
In the kitchen Lou is still making dinner, none the wiser. It's 6:52pm and the girls are really pushing their luck. Kate knows this, so when Sophie says she can't find her backpack, she tells her sister they're just going to have to buy new things later. Sophie isn't happy but Kate says they have to leave right now. Lou almost wrecks things when he thwarts their plans about going down the shops, but Kate finally just says they have to head out and drags Sophie out the door.
Meeting Point
Mark parks his car and feels nervous when he notices that it's 6.54pm.
Street Somewhere
Sophie yells at Kate to stop dragging her but Kate keeps them running and says they have to go faster.
Meeting Point
Supt. Hayes pulls up and Mark says he drove around the streets for a while to make sure he wasn't followed. Hayes asks if he's ready but Mark says he's just waiting on Kate, assuring Hayes that she'll be there soon.
Run, Forrest, Run
Kate and Sophie are racing across some grass when Sophie trips and falls over. Kate helps her sister up before trying to call Mark, but gets angry when she realises there's no reception.
Meeting Point
Mark hands his wallet and car keys over to Hayes while there's a shot of Kate running juxtaposed next to them. Hayes tells Mark that someone will collect his car and that he'll have everything replaced when he gets to the endpoint. He then asks Mark for his phone, which Mark reluctantly turns off and hands over.
Another Street Somewhere
The girls are running their little legs off. Sophie tells Kate to try her phone again but there's still no reception. Unable to keep up, Sophie says that Kate will have to go without her. They only need one person to reach Mark and then they can come back to collect her and the bag. Kate feels awful but hands the bag over to Sophie and keeps running.
Meeting Point
Thunder crackles ominously in the sky, adding to the tense atmosphere. Hayes tells Mark they need to leave right now but Mark yells, "Just a few more minutes, dammit!" Kate runs, and runs and runs.
Third Commercial Break
Meeting Point
The rain is absolutely bucketing down by the time Kate gets there, and Sophie isn't far behind, but Mark isn't anywhere to be found. She rings him and leaves a breathless message on his voicemail, letting him know she's there. Kate starts to freak out but Sophie says that Mark might have changed his mind - he could be waiting for her back at home. Clinging to one last shred of hope, Kate rushes back to Ramsay Street.
Number 26
Sopping wet, Kate bursts through the door and yells for Mark, searching for him everywhere, but the only person to appear is Kyle. He asks what she's doing here and she bursts into tears. Kate gets a message from an unknown number that says 'I love you', which just adds to her grief.
Hayes's Car
Mark sadly hands Hayes his phone back and thanks him. He stares out the window into the stormy sky and thinks about everything he's lost.
Number 26
Kyle puts his arm around Kate while she sobs her heart out and lets the awful truth sink in - Mark is gone.
