No 30
Libby barges into number 30 informing Toadie that Sam is here and is on a case.Toadie informs her that she is here to prosecute Steph. of course she is Libby replies. Toadie says it had to be someone. He explains the list - maybe she got assigned or put her hand up, either way they have to live with it. Libby thinks that Sam is doing this to get back at them, he informs her they have to stay calm and focused and that he is doing everything he can so Sam won't have a hope in hell. Apparently Toadie needs Libby's statement as she was the last person to see Steph before the accident. She says of course he can but right now he has to get Declan's statement, Libby thinks Declan well be able to tell him it was an accident. Toadie informs her that Sam got to Kate and will try to get to her too. Libby says that Sam won't get to her, Toadie pleased to hear this.
TOADIE: We have a fight on our hands
Toadie's Law Office
Declan walks in on the phone to someone, he tells Toadie he doesn't have much time. Toadie asks him what happened at the accident. Declan tells him to ask Kate but Toadie says he needs to hear it from him and he needs to record it.
DECLAN: It all happened really fast: Kate crossed the road, Ringo yelled out, next thing I knew he was pushing her off the road and that's when....
Toadie apologies for making him live though it again but says he needs to know if Steph could have avoided Ringo. Declan doesn't know but thinks that she would not have had time to stop. Toadie asks him if he would be prepared to say this in court and he says he will. Toadie thanks him but Declan says he is not supporting Steph - just stating the facts.
DECLAN: Whatever happens to Steph, nothing's going to bring back my best mate.
Toadie says sorry, they shake hands; Declan leaves and takes another phone call.
No 26
Toadie has followed Steph into the kitchen, telling her that Declan's version matches hers, so she doesn't have to worry about what Sam is doing. She asks him if he has spoken to Kate. He tells her Declan's statement is more important as Kate was involved in the accident and could be confused. Summer enters the kitchen and says how pleased she is that Toadie took the case. Toadie jokes about Steph getting his bill, Steph asks him if he wants a cup of coffee but he says he has work to do and then afterwards he and Sonya are going down to Charlies for the Melbourne Cup thing.
TOADIE: Rebecca's doing a big promotion, there's a cup sweep, afternoon tea, and watch the race on the big screen.
Toadie thinks Steph should come, Summer thinks they should all go. Steph's not sure, but Summer thinks she should get out of the house for a bit. She finally says she will, Toadie says he will meet her there and Lyn should come too, they are all in agreement. Toadie tells Steph they are all there for her before leaving.
No 22
Sam asks Paul if Libby and Steph are friends again, he tells her they have settled some of their differences.
SAM: Libby's very forgiving isn't she?
Rebecca arrives home, and tells Sam this isn't a gossip house. Sam just wants the facts and she knows Paul will be straight with her. Rebecca thinks Paul needs to rest so Sam leaves. Rebecca thinks Sam is trouble tells Paul it's not his problem, Paul says she had some questions and he answered them, that's all. Rebecca leaves to go to work. Andrew asks Paul if everything is alright between him and Rebecca, he says it is. Andrew asks about his plans for the day and Paul says he might go to Rebecca's Melbourne Cup thing and he doesn't need Andrew's help with Rebecca.
Lassiter's
Andrew approaches Declan with a proposal: a family barbecue in the park, food, games for the kids and Charlie's vouchers to get them to come to Charlie's afterwards. Andrew reckons he could organise it himself, donate the proceeds to Charity and do it in honour of Ringo. Declan asks him how long he needs, and cuts Andrew's request for two hours to one hour.
Outside Lassiter's
Andrew handing out flyers to people walking by about the barbecue down by the lake. Declan approaches wanting an update - apparently a toy store lent Andrew hobby horses and some mates from school are helping with the catering in exchange for free food. Declan wants to know how the reaction has been - Andrew tells him it's been pretty good for short notice, he reckons they might get a bit of a crowd. Declan congratulates him and tells him to keep it up. Declan walks back to Lassiter's.
Rebecca approaches Andrew and wants to know what's going on, he tells her there is a Melbourne Cup barbecue down at the lake for local families. Rebecca asks him if it is completing with her promotion, he says no, it's finishing just before, so he needs some Charlie's vouchers so people will know to come to Charlie's after. Rebecca thinks it is a great idea and thanks him. Andrew informs him it was him dad's idea, now she doesn't look happy and walks back to Charlie's.
Outside Harold's Store
Sam approaches Karl, Karl already knows why she is here though, so Sam offers her condolences. He thanks her and tells her he is meeting Susan. She asks to buy him a coffee, saying she recently lost her father, so she knows what he is going through. He asks if it has affected her health, she tells him she is managing, she asks to buy him a coffee again and this time he says yes: they walk into Harold's.
Harold's Store
Sam, Susan and Karl are having coffee, Sam says she wants to mend a few bridges and to apologise for everything that has happened - she's in a really good place right now. Susan thinks that she shouldn't be apologising to them. Sam says they were affected by Ringo's death too. Karl thinks it's good that Sam is well again, she says her baby keeps her busy and she hates leaving her. Sam asks if they are angry about Ringo, and starts to probe for details of Ringo and Donna's relationship.
At this point, Libby, Sonya and Toadie enter. Libby goes up to her parents table and asks Sam what she is doing here. Sam says she is chatting to her parents, She also wants a word with Libby, but Libby tells her to leave or she will throw her out herself. Karl tells Libby she is out of line, but Sam says she doesn't want to upset anyone so she leaves, Libby takes her seat and asks what Sam wanted, they explain she was telling them about her father and asking about Ringo. The last part doesn't surprise Libby and she tells her parents to stay away from Sam. She gets up and goes back to Sonya and Toadie. She tells them Sam is out of control and thinks she took the case to get back at her. Sonya tries to calm her down but Libby is having none of it, she wants to make her statement right now. They leave to go to his office.
LIBBY: Steph stood up for me and I have to stand up for her.
Toadie's Law Office
Toadie asks Libby if there were any signs of alcohol in the motel room, Libby says there was nothing. And how did Steph seem? Libby says she was upset. Toadie wants to know why Steph left the hotel, Libby tells him they had a disagreement about her giving up the baby and she needed some air to clear her head. Toadie asks if she had any worries about Steph taking off. Libby has a flashback of trying to stop Steph, but tells Toadie that Steph was fit to ride.
Harold's Store
Andrew is trying to get Lucas to help with the hobby horses for the barbecue, he eventually says yes but says Andrew owes him.
At Susan and Karl's table, Karl thinks Sam didn't have an agenda earlier but Susan says that Sam always has one. Karl says they all want the same thing - justice for Ringo. Susan knows this but Karl also knows she doesn't want to support Sam. Libby arrives and apologises for before but Sam really gets to her. Karl tells her that Sam never mentioned the case but Libby thinks it was coming. Karl's not sure about that. Libby takes this to mean that he is on Sam's side, No - they are on Ringo's side. Libby has to meet Steph at Charlies so she leaves.
Charlie's
A lot of people have gathered. Sonya and Toadie are already sitting down, Summer, Steph and Charlie arrive, Toadie goes to get drinks. Sonya tells Steph about the barbecue down at the lake with hobby horses and thought Charlie might like to go. Summer thinks that sounds like fun and asks Charlie if he wants to go, he answers yes but Steph says no. Libby arrives and gives Steph a hug. Toadie arrives back with the drinks.
Sam arrives and says hello to everyone, asking Steph if she is taking Charlie down to the lake, Steph says no and Sam thinks it's a good thing, in case he "gets lost like last time"! Steph decides to go, so she, Charlie and Summer leave. Libby gets up to speak to Sam telling her she knows she's come inflict as much pain as possible.
LIBBY: It wasn't enough that you had to destroy my marriage to Dan, now you want to ruin Steph's life as well!
Sam thinks Steph is doing a fine job all by herself. Sam wants to know why Libby is defending Steph, She says it's because Steph's a good person and she would never deliberately set out to hurt anyone.
SAM: Least of all her best friend right? So when you found out she'd slept with Dan, hidden it from you for months, and was having his baby, that didn't hurt? It happened here didn't it? Loyal to the bitter end, Libby. Hope you don't live to regret it.
Sam walks away and we are shown Lucas watching this whole conversation. Libby looks upset and Lucas decides to follow Sam.
Outside Lassiter's Complex
Lucas approaches Sam, to tell her to leave everyone alone. She claims she is doing her job but Lucas says she is attacking them in public. She thinks they will have to get used to it as she won't be going any easier in court. They walk away from each other.
Paul and Andrew are walking to Charlie's with Paul congratulating Andrew on his family barbecue plan. Rebecca overhears their conversation and looks disgusted, walking off. Paul is confused and Andrew tells him he told Rebecca it was his idea. Paul looks mad but doesn't know what to say, so he walks into Charlie's, Andrew follows him a second later.
Charlie's
Rebecca and Paul are fighting about the family barbecue thing. Andrew looks on, not at all happy, he walks over and explains it was his idea. Declan arrives, Rebecca assures them that it was a disagreement and that she has been stressed out that's all, just forget it. Paul and Rebecca tell Andrew he did a great job and they are impressed. Andrew and Paul move off, while Declan goes to talk to his mum, Declan asks his mum what is going on, she says nothing and just walks off.
No 26
Libby comes in to find Steph taking out her aggression on the vegetables.
STEPH: It's better to take it out on them than you know who.
Libby reminds her Steph that she isn't a bad person, but Steph thinks everyone else thinks she is. Libby tells her the people who knows her are the only ones that matters, she can't keep beating herself up, she needs to be strong for the trial. Steph thinks it's going to be awful, Sam's not going to stop until she has enough ammunition to tear her apart. Libby says they will get though it together, they won't let Sam walk all over them. Steph thinks everything is happening all around her and she can't control it. Libby knows Toadie will build a strong case, they'll fight this thing and Steph will be able to get your life back on track. Steph thanks her, they hug.
LIBBY: it's you and me, Steph; together we can handle anything, especially Sam Fitzgerald.
Charlie's
Rebecca, Paul, Declan and Andrew are sitting at a table. Rebecca tells everyone the situation - that she and Paul had some issues that they had to work out, and that she knows that things have been tense but they are committed to saving their marriage. She knows what Andrew did was with good intentions, but asks him not to play matchmaker anymore. Andrew promises.
REBECCA: It's nearly time for the race that stops the nation!
Everyone's excited and Paul goes to get champagne. Andrew leaves the table too. Declan tells his mum that he knows her speech was for Andrew's benefit but he's not buying it.
Kennedys
Karl and Susan are sitting at the table. Libby come in and tells them she didn't stick around for the race as Steph left early. Susan and Libby go to make tea and Karl answers the door to Sam. She wants to speak to Libby. Libby thinks Sam has caused enough damage but Sam says she didn't come for trouble, she came for her statement. Libby tells her she spoke to Toadie and is supporting Steph. Sam wants to know if she is being objective, But Libby say her feelings don't matter it's the facts that do - Steph was fine before the accident and that is what she is telling the court.
Karl politely asks Sam to leave and when she has, Karl turn around to Libby:
KARL: What the hell are you playing at?
Kennedys
Susan reminds Libby that she told them that Steph was in no state to be riding. Libby says she over reacted. They tell her that her story has completely changed - it's not good enough and that she can't lie in court. She says she's not lying. They counter that she's not telling the truth either! They go on to say that it isn't fair to Ringo - he deserves justice and Steph has to face the consequences of her actions. Libby says she is not giving Sam the ammunition to put Steph in jail and neither are they. She walks away.
