Steve and Ned have finished their task and chat about their father while putting their equipment away. They wonder where Dan and Steph have got to and Ned tries shouting for them on the radio, no joy, before resuming his chat with Steve. Steve doesn't seem to be comfortable talking about their dad and instead tries to contact Dan but hears nothing on the radio. He starts to worry when Dan doesn't respond to the calls over the radio and wants to go start looking for them but Ned says to wait for back-up as protocol dictates.
Finally they hear Dan and eventually he manages to relay that they're trapped in a mineshaft but the reception is very patchy. Steve pulls out the map for where they could be but Ned thinks that there are too many places to search but they both head off to at least try.
Dan can't hear Steve and tries shouting to no avail. Through the pain, Steph apologises for getting them into the miss they are in and noticing how much pain she is in, he says that she needs a doctor.
STEPH: You think Karl does house calls this far do you?!

She tells him of her dream of going around Australia on her bike... and that she has failed twice. Steph becomes very philosophical about hurting the people she loves and what the future holds for Charlie.

Libby has set up an easel for Ben to use but he has to be sweet-talked into using it in preference to the floor. She then spots the books Susan has lined up for the boys and Susan admits that she is enjoying teaching but isn't sure she fancies the stress of a classroom all however that is all irrelevant for now as her teaching registration is still in doubt following the accident.
Sam arrives to tell Libby that the paperwork on her cases is all good and that she has submitted it with a response in a couple of weeks. However that wasn't really the reason she came round and after Susan makes a convenient exit, she says the real reason - Dan and that he shouldn't come between them being friends. Libby wonders why this bothers her so much and Sam says it because she is new in town and needs all the friends she can get.
Libby makes lunch for the two of them and they chat over how Libby manages without a partner in her life. Lib says that she gets by (although missing someone to share the load with) and her parents are there to help too but it's not the same. She asks Sam if she wants kids and replies that she did once but it didn't happen and then goes onto tell Libby about her miscarriage at 6 months. Lib is stunned at what she has just heard.
Miranda is telling Riley of her deal with Lou and asks if he wants to invite Heather round for lunch but he has to turn it down as she is working but reassures his mum that it has nothing to do with her making up a sofa bed! He does bemoan to her though that he wishes Brad would give him some better stories to work on (like Heather does) compared to the ones he's usually given.
Susan pops by with the veggies she picked as an excuse to leave Libby and Sam to talk and they are first to hear the news Riley has just heard from the newspaper - that there has been an accident on the SES operation and Dan and Steph are trapped in a mineshaft. Miranda panics about Ned and Steve but Riley relays that there is no news about them before leaving to cover the story. She wants to go with her son but he firmly says no.
Sam explains that she didn't deliberately come round to tell Libby about the baby she lost and they are chatting amiably with Ben when Susan rushes in to tell them about the accident.

Steph and Dan sit and wait for help and in the other shaft, Ned reaches a bricked up wall and bangs on it, shouting if Dan is on the other side. Dan bangs back to say they are there and that they will move back to allow Ned to see if he can knock through it.
Once they are in a safe position, Ned begins to break down the wall and Steve forgets about his claustrophobia to join his brother. Slowly the wall is giving way but the watching Steve tells Ned to stop and as Ned takes a step back, the shaft they are in starts to cave in on itself.
