Recap
Karl telling Susan that the Vivex selling drugs of incorrect doses is potentially a huge problem.
Ned telling the footie team coach that he's ruining the kids' enjoyment of the game - and agreeing to coach them in future!
Elle learning Declan's dad's real name.
Elle searching for Oliver and Declan's dad.
Elle finding Richard Aaranow - the dad.
Richard Aaronow's School
Richard is showing Elle 'Roberts' around his school; she lies that and says that she's looking for a school for her brother who has behavioural issues. Her father thinks her brother, Benji needs a firm hand. Richard suggests that the school might be good for him.
Kennedys
Steve is telling Karl that some animals have died recently, both of whom had Vivex antibiotics, which were from different batches. Karl is concerned that if the veterinary batches are bad, then what about their human pharmaceuticals department? Karl agrees that he needs to talk to Christian again.
KARL: He'll be mortified that it's happened again, no doubt.
SUSAN: Mmmmm. Might get a free helicopter this time.
Karl makes a very Fletch face at Susan for her remark. Steve wonders if this isn't an accident - what if Vivex are trying to make a quick buck? Karl's not so sure, but will look into it. The women - and by women I include Miranda who has said nothing in this scene - look at each other.
Richard Aaronow's School
Elle and Richard wander along the fancy school grounds, past a couple of pirates. Oddly, I didn't actually pay any attention to the fact that they were pirates, until Richard points them out.
It's apparently rehearsals for The Pirates Of Penzance. Richard comments that one of the kids in the show was up for an assault charge recently, but has turned his life around at this school. Elle's not that interested.
Elle comments that Richard's wife and kids must think he's heaven on a stick. But he replies that he doesn't have a wife and kids; the woman he loved never loved him back. Hmmm. Because, you know, you divulge this kind of thing to a person you've known for ten minutes. Richard wants to speak to Elle's parents, but she makes excuses for them being in Romania, having no phone, not being on the internet, having no postal address... Richard clicks that something's wrong. But some kids want to talk to him about an art project, so Rich tells Elle to sit down and wait for him.
Charlie's Bar
Karl is showing Christian the evidence that Steve has uncovered with regard to the drugs. Christian tells Karl that they're already onto it - they're doing a nationwide recall. Christian tells Karl that they're testing the entire range of veterinary drugs, and are arranging a Press statement for the evening.
Karl wonders if there is any evidence of other problems; should they be testing the human pharmaceuticals? Maybe it's not as accidental as they all think...
CHRISTIAN: Karl, you've been around pharm companies for a long time, haven't you?
KARL: As a doctor, yes.
CHRISTIAN: You know how high the stakes are in this business; we live and die by our reputations and Vivex has one of the best. We have done *everything* by the book, here. And if someone is suggesting to you that there's something more malevolent...we'd have to take action. In the interests of fairness.
KARL: Yeah. Fairness. Right.
Christian tells Karl that he'll see him back in the office. Karl looks worried.
By Lassiters Lake
It's a beautiful day, the sun is shining, the water is lapping in the lake, and Susan holds a bag of nuts whilst Miranda eats them. Susie is telling her new bestest bestest friend in the world that she hasn't been *shopping* shopping since Janelle left.
The girls agree that the boys are all Captain Courageous about the whole conspiracy theory thing with Vivex, before nearly being mown down by Ned's footie team. Plus, a new playground has appeared on the grounds of Lassiters - which has very possibly been there before, but I haven't noticed it til now.
Lawyer's Office
Karl is being advised by Toadie on the Vivex case.
TOADIE: Do nothing.
KARL: Maybe I didn't explain myself properly.
TOADIE: No, you explained yourself. You asked my opinion, I gave it to you; you don't have a leg to stand on.
KARL: Why not?
TOADIE: Because......they've done everything right. They've complied with all relevant legislation.
Karl is frustrated - he has a hunch that they're up to something, and Toadie laughs - he wants to take on a multi-national pharmaceutical company on a hunch? Karl insists he's in the right - and there's a principle at stake.
TOADIE: Karl, you know, I would love to take this on. Taking on a massive corporation and knocking them off is stuff that dreams are made of, you know? And it would keep Tim off my back for the rest of my life.
KARL: Then do it!
And it all gets a bit Erin Brockovich until Toadie reminds Karl that he's billing him for this, so he needs to be quick.
TOADIE: Firstly, you don't have a case. Vivex hasn't harmed you so you can't sue them.
Hurrah! Accurate legal advice!
Toadie also reminds Karl that he has no evidence. And even if he did, Vivex would have private investigators digging into his past, and threats to him, his family...as well as massive legal bills.
TOADIE: My advice: tiptoe away before it's too late.
Lassiters Grounds
Miranda and Susan are still eating nuts whilst walking. And my bad - they haven't been shopping yet, hence no bags. They decide to go shopping first, then unwind with a nice Devonshire tea. Oooh, that does sound nice.
Susan and Miranda are walking RIGHT next to each other, Susan is maybe one small step ahead. A motorbike comes right at her, and although Miranda is right by Susan's side, she SCREAMS her name! Now, if Susie were halfway across the road, I could understand; but from what I can see, Miranda's also in the firing line here. Anyway, Miranda pulls her bestest mate back from the road, and the motorbike roars past, driving over Susan's bag of nuts.
Richard's School
Richard finishes his conversation with the boys about their art project before resuming his conversation with Elle, who continues her lies. Her parents have given up on her brother Benji, so the private school was his idea. She rushes off, apologising, and drops her handbag. She clears it up, but misses her Lassiters pass which has fallen under a bench. Richard picks it up and does his best thoughtful face.
Number 22
The footie team are having pies at the house. Mickey and another kid fight over the sauce, and Ned tells them to be careful. Janae turns up to see Ned and Toadie running the party.
JANAE: What is Toadie doing her?
NED: I mentioned pies and he just appeared.
The kids are playing loudly in the lounge, hitting each other with cushions. Ned ineffectually asks them to 'play nice.'
But Janae has an alternative way of disciplining. She whistles loudly and *tells* them what to do. Good girl Janae - she learnt from having to live with her brothers. Ned is impressed.
Two kids in the kitchen have knocked some drink over and are laughing about it. Erm, how about an apology and making them clear it up??
Honestly. Kids of today.
Veterinary Surgery
Karl walks in, where he finds Miranda and Susie talking to Steve, telling him about what happened.
MIRANDA: Susan nearly stepped in front of a motorbike, very dramatic.
SUSAN: It looked like he was coming straight for me; Miranda pulled me back just in time - hey, I think that means I'm your slave for life, doesn't it?
MIRANDA: Shout me a sav blanc tonight and we're quits.
Karl is very concerned - did he stop? Did they get the number plate? Did Susan see his face? When did it happen? Steve wants to know what's going on, and Karl tells them about the vague threats that Christian made.
SUSAN: Karl, this is Erinsborough. You've been watching too many gangster movies.
Karl thinks there's something going on, and Steve agrees - Karl has two options. Either toe the company line or quit.
Charlie's Bar
Ollie is telling Elle about Declan's birthday, but she's very distracted. She poses him a hypothetical question - if someone knew where his father was, would he want to know? He says no, absolutely not. Elle goes on and on about it, and he eventually concedes to tell her the truth about his dad and what he did to Rebecca.
In another corner of the bar Christian has offered Karl a 15% - no, let's up it - a 20% pay increase. Karl is stunned. Christian reminds him that he has saved the company HUGE amounts of money, and they're very very grateful to him for making the waves that he did. He tells Karl that they need people like him, those who are committed to the company 100%. Karl smiles and confirms that he's 120% committed.
Back at Elle's table, she is gobsmacked after Oliver has told her the truth about Richard. Elle feels awful about the way she treated Rebecca, and she promises not to tell anyone else the truth. Elle hopes that his dad never finds him...
Lassiters
...just as Richard drives up to return Elle's pass.
Number 22
Ned is giving the Pups footie team an inspirational speech, and high fives on the way out. Toadie gives them a business card each.
TOADIE: Never too young to litigate. There you go.
Mickey asks Ned if Tyler can sleep over tonight, and Ned refuses - there's no room, and it's Paul's house. Janae agrees - so maybe it's time that Ned and Mickey moved in with her? Ned thinks she's kidding but she isn't. Toadie quickly makes an exit. Ned would love to move in with Janae - and so she produces some keys that she had cut for him.
Lassiters
Elle and Oliver meet Rebecca outside Charlie's Bar, and Elle apologises for missing the barbecue. They make polite conversation until Ollie says he has to stay at work tonight, there's a problem, and he won't be able to make the DVD night with his mum who got some Tom Cruise DVDs. Elle offers to cover for Ollie, but he has to be there, so instead she offers to spend the evening with Rebecca.
ELLE: Always had a secret thing for Tom Cruise. (seeing Ollie's face) Really secret.
Rebecca agrees and Oliver is pleased they're getting on.
Some spooky music comes on and Richard appears literally out of the bushes. He sees Elle wandering through Lassiters with Rebecca at her side. In shock, he runs off, quickly.
Kennedys
Susie, Miranda, Steve and Toadie are chatting, as Karl comes home. Toadie is telling what is supposedly a joke:
TOADIE: And I said to him, "Mate, I'm going to sue you!"
STEVE: And you did?
TOADIE: Yeah.
STEVE: Oh.
Susan presents Karl with a glass of white wine, and Karl announces that he's getting a very big pay rise.
KARL: Christian made me an offer I couldn't resist.
STEVE: You sold out.
TOADIE: No...you don't look guilty enough for that. You're planning something, aren't you?
SUSAN: What have you done?
Karl says that he's going to get the evidence that he needs to prove that Vivex is defrauding and endangering customers. They obviously think he's onto something as they're doing everything they can to stop him looking.
SUSAN: Then why keep working there?
KARL: Because if they think I'm on board then they won't see me as a risk.
Susan thinks they should go to the police, but Karl has nothing to go with. He puts an arm around her to assure her that's it's alright - he won't do anything stupid. Steve says he'll back Karl all the way. The Parkers and Toadie leave.
Karl sits at the table, and tells his wife that he can't walk away. She sits on his lap and tells him to make sure that he's careful. He says he will be - he's got too much to lose. They kiss.
Lassiters
Rebecca and Elle are in a car together, agreeing that it's nice for them to be friends for a change. Elle drives off - and the camera pans to show Richard watching them from his car.
He drives away, too.
