Recap
- Susan telling Katya the kids are staying with her.
- Max telling Steph that Summer is ill and Steph telling him to go to Summer.
- Steph collapsing after waving Max off.
Ramsay Street
Boyd helps Steph up to the little brick wall at the No. 32 driveway and tells Steph he is going to call for help. Steph stops him saying she is just tired and doesn't want him to call Max (because Summer needs him more then she does) or tell Lyn either. Reluctantly Boyd agrees and gives Steph a cuddle instead.
Hospital
Zeke calls round to hang out with Katya but she puts him off as she is working. He runs into Karl on the way out and Karl asks if Susan knows he is at the hospital (shake of the head to indicate no) so Karl tells him to go home as Susan will be worried. Karl and Katya then have a little tit for tat session until Karl walks off shaking his head and sighing heavily.
No. 26
Toadie comes round to tell Stinger and Bree that they have to call a halt to the Angie v Janelle boxing match and tells them that Angie is even lifting weights! Bree and Stinger try to get Angie to back out but Toadie is having none of that and puts forward the case that Janelle is going down instead and he'll even put his money where his mouth is by betting $50 on his mum to win.
Once Toadie leaves, Lyn tries to talk sense to Bree and Stinger but likewise they're having none of it and are looking forward to seeing their mum win.
Ramsay Street
Boyd brings Steph a glass of water as the ambulance pulls up. Susan and Rachel notice this as they are unpacking the car and head over as the paramedic is checking Steph over. Steph explains to them that she had a turn as the paramedic tells Steph she needs to go to the hospital. As Susan and the paramedic help Steph to her feet we hear Lyn shouting out Steph's name as she runs to her. Susan quickly tells Steph she has to tell her mum and when Lyn appears wanting details Steph says she'll tell her on route to the hospital.
Hospital
Steph is now in a hospital bed being given the once over by Katya and Karl. Katya gives Steph the good news is that Charlie is okay and when Katya leaves, she tells Karl that Katya seems nice. "Yes, so I'm told" replies Karl. He is about to talk to Steph when Lyn and Boyd rush into the room. Karl wants them to leave since he isn't finished but Steph give her okay for them to stay.
STEPH: Good news Charlie is okay. Bad news?
KARL: The cancer has progressed. It's spread to the lymph nodes in the armpit and is right throughout the breast itself.
LYN: Oh my god.
Karl confirms that Charlie isn't affected by the cancer but tells Steph that she'll get sicker and we're now talking days and weeks not months to a point where she won't be able to be treated at all. Steph tries to be optimistic in saying she can beat it but Karl informs her she isn't winning the gamble she is taking.
Lyn then finds out that Steph has known for a bit about getting sicker and Steph apologises for not saying something but she knew how Lyn and Max would react. Steph agrees to stay in hospital as long as treatment isn't forced on her. Katya who has come back into the room confirms that nobody can force Steph to do anything she doesn't want. Karl tries one last track and Steph agrees to have treatment if it is discovered that Charlie is being affected.
Steph asks Lyn and Boyd to leave the room and outside in the corridor Boyd goes to phone Max but Lyn (who is in shock at finding out Steph is really sick) tells him not to because Steph wants him to be with Summer. Boyd repeats that Max should know but again Lyn stops him because Max'll be forced into choosing between his wife and his daughter and that is a decision he shouldn't be forced into making.
No. 28
Rachel comes out to show off a dress she has got. Susan pays her compliments as Zeke comes out to hand Susan a note telling her he went to see Katya at the hospital and not to get mad. "I'm not mad Zeke, it's alright," shouts Susan through the door to him.
Susan then explains to Rachel that she won't stop him from seeing Katya and Rachel replies that he isn't the only one grieving for Alex. She then tells Susan that the reason Zeke is running to Katya is because she lets him do whatever he wants. Susan reassures Rachel that they get through it all because Alex wanted them to be happy. Rachel says that she is sure Zeke will choose to stay with her but Susan hopes that nobody is forced into choosing because hopefully mediation will sort everything out. Rachel shocks Susan by telling her that if Zeke chooses to go with Katya then she'll go too because she doesn't want to be separated from her brother.
Hospital
Boyd tells Steph he couldn't get through to Max and she takes the news quite calmly and tells Boyd to give it a few days so Max can spend some time with Summer before they phone to tell him.
Out in the corridor Lyn asks Karl if Steph can hang on the two weeks until she is 36 weeks gone but he can't give her any guarantees.
Back in Steph's room, Katya enters to connect Steph to an oximeter so they can check that Steph and bubs are getting enough oxygen. Boyd leaves to go to a lecture and Steph asks Katya if she is mad by not having chemo and is surprised to hear Katya say that it is her choice and can understand her putting Charlie first and doing all she can to protect him. Karl hears the tail end of the conversation and asks to speak to Katya outside.
Out in the corridor Karl reminds Katya that personal opinion must not compromise this case and Katya replies that she was simply comforting a patient.
No. 26
Rachel comes round and Stinger says she looks nice in the dress she is still wearing and jokingly says that if they went clubbing he'd be the one to have to show ID. Rachel thinks he is being serious and he quickly back tracks as Bree comes off the phone. She tells them the bad news - the publisher doesn't like the photos they submitted for the book cover and want new ones and doesn't think bruises and black eyes from her fight with Angie will go down very well. Stinger suggests make up but Bree reminds him that Janelle already uses a ton of the stuff to get ready in the morning and the only solution is to cancel the fight. Rachel is a bit confused over why Angie and Janelle are fighting in the first place and Bree replies it was due to family feuds. Stinger has a brainwave - the beaten up look will prove that Janelle is an Aussie battler!
Zeke enters and gives Bree her history assignment and to give her a note before running out of the house. Stinger wants to know what the note says but Bree refuses because he has been teasing her about their relationship being back on and runs into her room to read the note.
No. 28
Toadie calls round to hear Susan ask him to be her lawyer in the mediation session with Katya. Susan also confirms that it doesn't seem likely to be resolved without the session as she answers the door to Karl. He's called round to tell her about Zeke being at the hospital and to bag Katya at the same time. Susan tells him that she's just been talking to Toadie about the mediation session as part of the custody case and Karl warns her to be careful because Katya is "a calculating young woman with a mean streak". Toadie tries to suggest that Katya wants a fair outcome too but his plea's fall on deaf ears when Karl tells him what like it is working with her at the hospital and the thread she made. Susan and Toadie tell him to keep his distance, which he agrees to and departs but doesn't look very happy.
SUSAN: He just wants to help.
TOADIE: As your lawyer I'm telling you, you don't want his help.
No. 28 (next day)
Bree calls round and wants to chat to Zeke. Bree says that she read his note and tells him that he isn't a freak and besides lots of people don't talk and they are still nice, normal people...especially him. He goes to write a note but before he can, Bree tells him that she'd love to go out with him again as her boyfriend. Zeke just writes 'yes' on a card and has a big smile on his face as he holds it up.
RACHEL: You two are as weird as each other.
Bree and Zeke leave for school and Rachel promises to catch them up.
Mediation meeting
Katya arrives and is surprised to see Toadie acting as Susan's lawyer and sarcastically comments that she doesn't need someone to hold her hand. Toadie starts the meeting by explaining the reasons behind it but he barely starts when Katya stops him to get straight to the point - what they want and to take it from there. Toadie is having none of that and tells her that the meeting is to stop them from ending up in court and that compromising is the only way forward.
Susan starts by saying she wants the kids to live with her, that Katya can visit with permission and she can have a say in the kids' life but Susan has the final say. Naturally Katya says that the kids should stay with her, and that Susan can visit but have no say in their lives.
SUSAN: You really think that's best for the kids, to just cut me out of their lives?
KATYA: Yes I do.
SUSAN: Do you think that is what your father would want?
KATYA: Without a shadow of a doubt.
SUSAN: You may have been his daughter Katya but I was his wife.
KATYA: For all of 5 minutes.
Susan says she knows what Alex wanted because he told her but Katya doubts that. Susan retaliates by asking who knew him best, her or the daughter who left home when she was 16. Katya decides she's heard enough and gets up and leaves. Susan points out to Toadie how can she be expected to negotiate given Katya's attitude. Toadie gets up and follows Katya out of the room, telling Susan he's going to talk to her and to give some advice.
SUSAN: Toadie, you're my lawyer!
Toadie catches up with Katya outside the building and when she stops asks what her problem inside was. Katya replies that she knew what her father wanted because he did tell her and suggests that Susan is lying. Toadie firmly tells her that Susan doesn't lie. Katya wants to know why he is talking to her and Toadie says he wants a fair outcome. It gets a bit hard to hear the next part as we 'hear' the conversation from Susan's perspective inside before returning to hear Toadie tell Katya to get a lawyer so a satisfactory result can be had. Katya doesn't think she stands a chance and Toadie remarks that her attitude isn't helping either. He then says that she has an hour and if he hasn't heard back to reschedule the meeting then she can basically say goodbye to any chance of custody.
Grease Monkey's
Rachel walks past Grease Monkey's and some random older guys invite her to join them. Just as she is about to, her knight in shining armour (Stingray) rides past and tells her he's better get her to school as year 9 is an important year to miss. Cue random older guys departing and Rachel not being happy at him. He compromises with her, if she goes with him and says what is bugging her; he'll give her some advice. Rachel isn't keen on the deal but Stinger turns on the charm and she relents.
Hospital
Lyn and Oscar pay a visit to see Steph and she is glad to see them. Steph apologises for not telling Lyn she was getting sicker because of a deal she made with Charlie (not to put her life before his).
LYN: Me and Oscar had a word to god last night, asked him what to do.
STEPH: Any answers?
LYN: Yes, trust. So I'm putting my trust in you and him (looks skyward) and I reckon everything's going to be just fine.
Lyn then kisses Steph on the forehead before cuddling her.
No. 28
Rachel admits to Stinger what her problem is - she is feeling left out and wants a boyfriend! Stinger then gives her a drink which she tastes but quickly lets him know she doesn't like the taste of it before asking why he gave her it. After telling her the ingredients (grapefruit, lemon & bitters and a touch of kumquat marmalade) adds that he gave her it to show that she doesn't have to be a sour old prune if she doesn't want. He also adds that she'll get a boyfriend and any guy that did will be spiggin lucky to have her. Rachel then goes and kisses Stinger on the lips but he doesn't respond and seems a bit stunned as to what has just happened.
Mediation meeting
Katya with accompanying lawyer puts forward her case - that the three of them should live together as a family and that she won't accept anything less. Susan invites her to live at No. 28 because that is the logical thing to do and reminds Katya that she isn't the evil stepmother she has her down as being and can't see why the four of them can't live together.
KATYA: Your ex-husband for one.
SUSAN: How is he an issue?
KATYA: You two meet on a daily basis, you support each other emotionally, you're clearly in a quasi-relationship. Karl Kennedy is morally and professionally reprehensible.
SUSAN: And what do you base that on?
KATYA: He broke patient confidentiality with my late father in order to ingratiate himself with Susan and it will continue in the same vain until he wins over the children.
SUSAN: You have completely misjudged Karl, he's an honourable man.
KATYA: An honourable man who is involved with a 16 year old patient that he was also counselling.
Susan is gobsmacked by these comments and Toadie butts in to add that Karl wasn't involved with anybody, which the school board also concluded and reinstated him.
KATYA: (sarcastically) Well there's no surprises there, Susan was Acting Principal at the time.
SUSAN: No, it was because we trusted Karl.
KATYA: You trusted Karl.
Katya decides again she's had enough because she's made her point clearly and rationally before adding that it is Susan who refuses to face reality.
Toadie tells Susan not to panic but she isn't so sure and wonders what will be said in court after the dirt she has dug up. She then tells him that they will have to hire a private investigator to find out all there is to know about Katya. Toadie suggests that won't be necessary because he believes Katya has got things off her chest and that they can still negotiate. Susan doesn't think so and accuses him of making eyes at Katya and asks him whose side is he on.
