Recap
- Steph's disappointment at her false pregnancy.
- Lou and Connor beefing up the fight to the rival pub.
- Jack falling and dangling off the ladder.
Work site
Jack dangles precariously in the air, until Jim and some of the other workers come and help him off the ladder.
The Pub
Connor, Valda and Lou prepare the pub for that day, when Lyn walks in with Oscar. All is well until Lou and Valda start to get into one of their bantering matches, this time Valda threatening Lou to raise the price on the rent.
When they are alone, Lyn excitingly shows Valda a brochure for the "Empson Country Estate", which is an idea for a location for Steph and Max's wedding. It sounds quite majestic and sophisticated, with detailing of arches and so forth as Lyn laments that an 80-spaced carpark might be too small. They laugh and wonder why Steph keeps saying she doesn't want a big wedding, before Lyn's mobile rings with news about Jack's accident from Lil.
Karl's Surgery
Karl wraps up Jack's right calf and as he is about to leave, Karl notices how shaky and how red his eyes are, more or less asking if he has taken any drugs. Jack tiredly replies he hasn't and is going back to work, barging his way out of the surgery, past a worried looking Lyn.
Grease Monkeys
Summer and Lisa wag their maths period so Lisa can educate Summer on the finer arts of dating boys. She encourages Summer that as a teenage girl, she must drop Declan as he is 'so last century'.
LISA: You have to realise that boys are like outfits. You outgrow them and then discard them.
Summer is reluctant to drop Declan for Brayddon (his name alone, with the double 'd' and 'y' makes him ultra cool) as he hasn't done anything wrong.
LISA: You have to realise that boys' feelings don't count!
SUMMER: They don't?
LISA: They have the emotional memory of a goldfish. Get real sad for 5 minutes, and then once he's eaten lunch it'll be all forgotten.
Pub Office
Lou finally gets off the phone with the council and informs Connor that Gladys O'Grady will be in the pub next week to judge the competition. Connor is frustrated that they have not figured out the secret ingredient in the rival pub's beer and since they no longer sell it bottled, has no idea how they're going to get it. Lou chuckles, and pats Connor on the back saying he'll work out a way, 'bottle or no bottle'. This phrase spurs Connor with an idea and he races out.
Karl's Surgery
Lyn pesters Karl for any information he can give about Jack, but he is unwilling to shed any light on Jack's problems. Desperate, she pleads 'Karl as a friend you've got to give me more than this.' He rebuffs her attempt, stating that it's fine that she wants to be friends now when she wants something from him.
Work site
Frustrated that is unable to saw through a piece of wood, Jack chucks everything down and stomps away from the construction site, flinging his work gear as Jim calls out after him.
Grease Monkeys
The girls use a bowl of chips in order to display the pros and cons of Declan and Brayddon, the girl with the most chips wins. All bets are even until the subject of Summer's birthday present and how juvenile it was causes Summer to sigh in exasperation and dump the entire bowl of chips on Lisa's side.
Karl's Surgery
Lil tries to pass a message onto Karl to no avail, which causes her to abruptly stand up and leave for lunch, complaining to David that he's been in a bad mood all morning. David declines her offer for lunch, instead opting to go keep Karl company.
Knocking on Karl's door, he suggests several places, each time Karl turning them down.
DAVID: The Pub?
KARL: Probably bump into Susan, she can give me the evil eye.
DAVID: The Coffee Shop?
KARL: Yes, with any luck Lyn will be there, or some other member of the Erinsborough Female Disapproval Chorus.
Finally, David suggests a place where there is 'great food, no prying eyes and music us oldies know the words to' much to Karl's delight.
(Later)
Seated with their fries and burgers, Karl confesses that his self esteem has never been lower. He is frustrated with the way the community is treating him through this messy break-up with Susan, asking if his contribution in the past 10 years has meant nothing?! David is awkward in listening Karl's anguish, grabbing Sky the minute she walks in and starts to blabber on.
On her way to collect her paycheck, she busts Summer and Lisa hiding behind a menu. Leaving, Summer reassures Lisa that she would never tell...
Back to the men, David tells Karl that he should be extremely happy with himself, dispensing numerous opinions about Izzy, much to Summer and Lisa's interest.
DAVID: You've landed yourself the hottest chick in town! Well apart from Lil. Izzy is one hot piece of lady pie, and you've got her! That my friend makes you a legend! Doctor Loooove.
The Pub
Dressed in a very large overcoat, Connor runs his way into the pub announcing to Lou that he has some of the rival's beer. He produces out a wig and reveals a hot water bottle around neck as his means of successfully stealing their brew. Valda asks if such childish games are necessarily for a stupid award, sparking Connor in mentioning the doppelganger pub chef with the exact lunch special. Called Esmeralda, he says she has a very big personality and her accent seems to be from Liverpool! Not to be beaten, Valda gives in and joins their ranks.
Grease Monkeys
The girls worry that they're going to be caught wagging from school if Karl and David don't move. Spotting Sky about to leave, Summer urgently whispers something into her ear. Sky looks puzzled for a second, but then quickly walks up to David and Karl announcing that she is going to teach them how to dance her moves. Just as they 'jump and turn' Karl catches a glimpse of Summer heading out the door.
Work site
Lyn drives up in the white station wagon, spotting Jim and thanks him for rescuing Jack. He tells her that Jack isn't around, that he had to go run an errand...a few hours ago. Lyn profusely apologies, knowing that this would not happen had Joe been here and drives off.
Scullys' Yard
Hanging up on Stu about Jack's whereabouts, Lyn steps into the backyard and spots some feet hanging over the side of the lawn chair. Stepping over, she sighs as she stares down at Jack peacefully snoring.
Pub Office
Dressed in goggles and gloves, Lou and Connor attempt to extract the rival brew's secret ingredient with help of a chemistry set. Connor soon realises (from a book) that it would be virtually impossibly because they would have to reverse the chemical equation. Annoyed at this, Lou drops some white substance into the beaker of beer (set on a tripod above a flaming bunsen burner) and unfortunately it reacts to create a powerful smelly odour. As it were, Valda walks into their little laboratory and drinks the beer, swirling it around before telling them knows what is in it.
Bishops
Lyn complains to Liljana that Karl is being unreasonable in withholding advice about Jack's condition. Lil wholeheartedly agrees and wonders if she should just take a peek at Jack's file, but David abruptly stops her. She turns on him and wonders how he would react if it were Serena in the position! Turning to Lyn, she gives her a wink which David picks up on and asks to promise her that she won't do it.
The Pub
Jack with dark bags under his eyes, drifts into the pub asking Connor for a Guarana energy drink. He tells Connor it must be nice to have lots of free time on ones hands however Connor takes offence to this, stating that he has a daughter to support. He asks Jack if he dislikes the job so much, why doesn't he just go and quit? Jack says it'd be nice, but he can't really let down his parents at the moment.
At that moment, the doors open and Lil and Lyn walk in, laughing about Lil's cousin wedding where the flowers wilted and in some pictures it looked as if a bomb exploded due to the wilted poppies. Valda appears and mentions that Steph had her heart set on white roses before Lyn is distracted by Jack.
Walking over, she asks if he should be getting some more sleep but he brushes it off. He's sorry about this morning and asks not to tell Joe what happened but all he needed was a bit of rest.
