Recap
- Libby sitting on the beach with Sunny after her first surfing lesson.
- Lou asking Cheryl to sign a cheque so that he can buy Helen's portrait of him.
- Philip telling Jen that he's realised he's a great handyman!
No. 28
Karl emerges from his bedroom and Mal asks him how he's getting on with his tertiary preferences sheet. He offers his and Susan's services, but Mal says coolly that he thinks he can decide for himself what he wants to do after High School. Susan comments that he said Outdoor Education was something he might want to study. Mal says he's also interested in Horticulture - and Food Technician sounds interesting! Karl points out that it's a very competitive world out there: it doesn't hurt to aim high. Mal sighs that it's his decision and he'll get to it. Susan insists that they just want to help him.
No. 24
Colin is telling Annalise about Africa while Marlene talks on the 'phone. She hangs up and beams that Patrick, her eldest - Sam's dad - is coming tomorrow! Annalise smiles that she can't wait to tell Sam! Marlene, however, says it's got to be a secret; they'll have a family dinner. She adds that Annalise is invited. Colin looks put out that he's been ignored. At that moment, Sam comes in and says hi. There's a sudden silence and he asks suspiciously if he's interrupting something. Annalise tells him that Colin was just telling them about the Masai tribe in Africa. Sam sighs that he needs a hot bath. Annalise asks if Billy has stuffed up again. Sam exclaims that he's so clumsy: he keeps dropping stuff and knocking things over. Annalise asks him what he's doing tomorrow and he replies that he'll mostly be next door, fixing Phil's handiwork!
No. 28
Karl emerges from the bedroom area, saying that Billy is sound asleep! The 'phone rings and Karl gets it. He listens and then hands the 'phone to Libby, telling her that it's Sonny, the surfer genius! Libby takes the 'phone to her room. Left alone with Susan, Karl asks her if things with Libby and Sonny are getting serious. Susan, however, says she needs a bit more to work on! They're about to head to bed when there's a knock on the front door and Karl goes and opens it to Danni. She has an overnight bag and she heads into Mal's room. Karl suddenly decides to stay up and catch the late news on TV!
No. 26
Lou and Philip walk into the kitchen where Philip shows Lou that he's hidden the 'fridge behind a cupboard. Lou asks if it isn't a bit cumbersome, having two doors. Philip admits that he might have to rethink it a bit. Helen watches the goings- on, wearily!
No. 28
Karl is reading one of Susan's books on Africa when she emerges from their room. She asks him what's keeping him up. Karl sighs that it's the kids: Mal and Danni are just so *young*. Susan points out that Mal is 18 and Danni's 19 - and there are kids *Billy's* age who are sexually active. She reminds him that it even happened in *their* day! Karl muses:
KARL: Yeah, well, it didn't happen to *me*.
SUSAN (sniggers): No, it didn't!
KARL (sighs): So I was a virgin when we met. Was it ever a problem?
SUSAN (smiles warmly): On the contrary. It was one of the things that attracted me: so much passion... so much innocence!
KARL: Quite unlike our eldest!
Susan, however, says she doubts Mal's that experienced; he's just very relaxed about his sexuality. Karl sighs that they're so casual about it; so laid back; it drives him crazy.
No. 30
The next morning, Colin lets Marlene in and she tells him that she realises she made a blue last night about the family dinner: she wants him to come as her partner. Colin asks what Patrick will think. Marlene smiles that he'll be happy for her. She apologises for not asking him last night, and Colin tells her that he confesses he did feel a bit of a pang.
Grounds of Erinsborough High
Several students have wheelchairs and are racing them around! Libby joins Manuela and tells her happily that Sonny rang her last night and is meeting her after school! She invites Manuela to join them. Susan and Annalise walk over and asks if everyone's there. Mal replies that Stonefish isn't - it looks like he's been delayed. Danni grins that it must be that hot date he went on last night! Susan then addresses everyone, saying:
SUSAN: Now, as you all know, AnnaJo Promotions are helping to send our Paralympians to the Atlanta games in 1996. Annalise is here to tell us how we can all do our bit.
ANNALISE: Thank you, Susan, and thanks to all you guys, too, for your promised support. First of all, I'd like to say a bit about the Paralympics. A few people - no names mentioned - like to think that they're a bit of a non- event; but *I* think that they more truly exemplify the original Olympic ideals than what the main Games do.
No. 26
Helen escorts Sam into the kitchen and tells him that Philip is at work so shouldn't be home for hours. She shows him the cupboard door in front of the 'fridge, musing that you have to open two doors now! She goes to turn the kitchen light on, but Sam quickly stops her, telling her that he's been talking to an electrician mate of his and he's going to come round this afternoon. Helen realises that she should have nipped this in the bud from the very beginning. Sam warns her to tell Phil before something serious happens.
Grounds of Erinsborough High
Annalise is telling the students to sign up sponsors, adding that they suggest a rate of 50c or $1 per hour spent in the wheelchair. Manuela comments that she's never been in a wheelchair and she asks if it's hard. Annalise smiles that she's welcome to give it a go. Manuela, Mal and Danni head straight to the chairs and sit in them!
No. 26
Sam has dismantled the cupboard in front of the 'fridge as Helen comments that they at least know now that it's safe. Sam asks her what she's going to tell Phil. At that moment, Philip comes in and says sharply:
PHILIP: Yes, what *are* you going to tell Philip?
Sam tells him that it couldn't be helped. Philip asks him angrily if he's looking for more ideas to pinch. He adds that he just saw an electrician's van outside, and adds that he was going to call one himself; he knows when he's bitten off more than he can chew. Helen looks at Sam guiltily.
Chez Chez
Marlene and Colin walk into the bar. Lou is behind the counter and Marlene tells him that she's looking for Cheryl. Lou, however, says she's not in today: she's feeling a little unwell. He adds that he told her about Patrick and she said she'd be there. Marlene hands him a slip with the name of the place providing the food and Lou says he'll take care of it. Marlene then says they need some Guinness while they're there. Lou smiles in a bad Irish accent(!):
LOU: Patrick by name and Patrick by nature, eh, darling?!
He goes to head down to the cellar to fetch it. Colin goes after him and asks to reserve a table for just himself and Marlene, with a bottle of champagne for a couple of nights' time. Lou asks what's on. Colin, however, just says:
COLIN: I can only divulge that I'm planning to sweep that lady off her feet.
No. 26
Philip is working at the table in the lounge room and Helen asks him if she's forgiven. Philip shrugs that there's nothing to forgive. Helen, however, insists that they need to talk about it. Philip joins her on the couch and sighs that Sam must think he's a moron for having to sneak around and redo all his work. He asks Helen why she didn't speak up before. Helen says she supposes it's the business with the portrait: she knows what it's like to do your best and people don't appreciate it. Philip assures her that she's forgiven - and he adds that he's put his tools away for good!
Beach
Libby and Sonny emerge from the water, Sonny telling Libby that she could get pretty good at surfing! They sit down on the beach, where Sonny tells Libby and Manuela - who's waiting for them - that they've both really got some style happening there. He then asks them if they could do him a favour and wear some of the new lines of tops in his shops. Libby grins that she *knew* he only wanted them for their bodies! He runs off to get some tops from the van, leaving Manuela to say to Libby:
MANUELA: Someone's keen on you!
LIBBY: Don't be stupid!
MANUELA (grins): It's true - he thinks you're hot!
LIBBY: Sonny is a surfing legend. Women throw themselves at him. He doesn't need us. He only likes us because we don't carry on like airheads.
MANUELA: Likes *us*?! *You're* the one getting all the eye contact!
LIBBY: Oh come off it! Why would someone like Sonny be interested in someone like me? It's crazy!
No. 24
Annalise emerges from her room and asks if her outfit is too dressy. Danni, however, insists that it looks great. Annalise sighs that she's nervous about meeting Sam's dad. There's suddenly a knock on the door and Marlene goes to open it excitedly - to find Lou standing there. He comes in - and is followed by Patrick! Marlene hugs her son and starts introducing everyone. Colin tells Patrick that his mother is something of a local treasure. Patrick smiles that he owes her a lot: she made his childhood very 'interesting'! Marlene then re- introduces Lou and introduces Danni and Mal. Patrick tells Mal to behave himself with his favourite niece! Marlene then introduces Annalise, and as he shakes her hand, Patrick stares at her, commenting that it's a lovely name. Marlene goes on that Sam's on his way - and he doesn't know anything about this. Colin hands round drinks. Marlene asks Lou how Cheryl's bearing up. Lou replies that she's almost her old safe again, so she'll be there. Marlene smiles that it's all going just the way she planned!
No. 28
Libby and Sonny are at No. 28, Libby enthusing to Susan about surfing being the greatest buzz she's ever had! Karl joins them and Libby reintroduces him to Sonny. Susan thanks Sonny for looking after Libby and she invites him to join them for dinner. Sonny, however, says he wouldn't feel right at such short notice - and he'd rather hoped to take Libby out for a pizza, if that doesn't disrupt arrangements. Susan smiles that she can't see a problem with that! Libby goes off to get changed, leaving Sonny to comment to Susan that Libby tells him she's planning a trip to Kenya. Susan beams that it's going to be wonderful!
No. 24
Annalise looks out the front window and spots Sam coming. Marlene tells Patrick to hide in the kitchen, as she wants to see the look on Sam's face! She then tells everyone else to act naturally. Sam comes in through the front door and, seeing everyone there, asks in surprise what the occasion is. Marlene tells him that it's just a little dinner to welcome someone special to Erinsborough. Sam asks who she means. Marlene goes and gets Patrick, who emerges from the kitchen. Sam's face suddenly drops. Patrick says to him:
PATRICK: Good to see you, son.
SAM (stiffly): Yeah. You too, dad.
PATRICK: How are you?
SAM: Fine. You?
PATRICK: Yeah. Good.
With that, Sam says he's just knocked off, so he'll jump in the shower and join them in a sec. He leaves the room. Everyone looks at each other, surprised at the sudden awkwardness of the atmosphere.
