Street outside Erinsborough High
Michael is loitering outside, looking over at the students outside on their break.
Number 24
Philip, Anne Teschendorff (the headmistress) and Cheryl are sat around the table discussing Michael and Danni. Cheryl and Philip explain to Anne that the families agree that the pair are bad for each other and they feel one of the kids should leave Erinsborough. Anne is surprised but when pressed, she can't think of a better solution. She says that if they stay together, it's likely they'll both drop out of school.
Philip asks which child should leave - and Anne says it's not her place to stay. Cheryl states that Danni has had a lot of disruption after being expelled from her previous school. Philip concedes that it must be Michael who goes (albeit without arguing Michael's case!). He says he wishes that there was another solution. Cheryl empathises and Anne says she will try to find Michael somewhere to finish his schooling. She offers to try to get him on an international exchange programme, saying that Michael might feel that it's less of a death sentence.
Number 30
Mark and Dave are in their pyjamas and working on a wooden model when Annalise interrupts and says Mark needs to go to the Coffee Shop to be trained for his new position. Mark is aghast as he's not due to start work for a few days, and learning the ropes will take him two minutes. Annalise says that if he wants to work for her, he'll attend.
MARK: Do I have a choice?
ANNALISE: Yes, there's always the dole queue, Mark.
Mark goes to get dressed and runs into Rick, warning him that Annalise is on the warpath. Rick tries to escape but Annalise collars him about his shifts at the Waterhole. As she tries to talk to him, Rick stonewalls her, warning her that whilst he's still bar manager, he doesn't take orders from Annalise. Annalise says that's fair, but warns him that if he doesn't co- operate now, she could make life very difficult for him when she is his boss in the future.
The House
Cody is taking Macca to task for Debbie's infatuation despite his efforts to dissuade her. Macca doesn't know what else he can do, and says he has other issues to deal with. Cody berates him for storing Doug and Lou's illicit booze, but then turns the conversation back to Debbie, telling Macca that he needs to have another talk with Debbie.
MACCA: To be honest, I don't think talking is going to do the trick. Not unless I absolutely lay it on the line. And that could hurt her.
Cody doesn't know what else he can do, but Macca says he can resign from the Deb Ball committee, as that would keep him away from the school.
CODY: You can't avoid her forever.
MACCA: I can certainly try!
Number 30
Dave and Mark are still looking at the model. Mark says he needs to leave before Annalise gets on his case. Dave says that if he doesn't want the job, he shouldn't take it. Mark points out that he needs to work to live, but Dave says that he's always managed to get by without working. Mark says he doesn't like the insecurity of how Dave lives, and the pair agree that they're very different people with different outlooks.
Number 24
Anne has left, and Cheryl says that Philip is going to blame her for Michael leaving. Philip is conflicted about having fought so hard to keep Michael at home and now sending him away, but Cheryl warns that it's better to let him go than to watch him go off the rails again.
They agree that they should've listened to the teenagers sooner, but it's gone too far to be resolved through discussion now. They're quite philosophical about the idea that it might not have made a difference, and what works for one child doesn't necessarily work for another. Cheryl talks about how she handled Darren and how hard she tried, but he still ended up in prison. She says she gave up with Janine very early, telling her to join the navy - and Janine did, got her education, and couldn't be happier.
CHERYL: Who's to say what the answer is?
Number 26
Philip and Michael are having a massive argument about him leaving. Michael feels betrayed and doesn't believe Philip when Philip says it's hurting him as much as it's hurting Michael; Michael accuses him of volunteering his name, and says that Philip can't wait to get rid of him.
PHILIP: Will you just listen to me? I don't want you to go but you've left us with no choice. I can't just let you and Danni run riot! Look at the trouble you've caused so far!
Michael says if he and Danni been allowed to see each other in the first place, none of this would've happened. Philip tells him that in time, Michael will see that this is for his own benefit. Michael shoots him a disbelieving look before walking off.
Erinsborough High
Rupert grabs Danni and drags her through the school yard. Danni protests and Rupert tells her that Michael's come to see her. Michael pays Rupert off and Rupert leaves the two to talk.
Danni warns him that they'll get into trouble, but Michael says he had to see her - they two need to talk. Danni says that they can't, and Michael says that they can still escape together. Danni is hesitant.
MICHAEL: What's the matter? Don't you want to be with me?
Danni says she does, but she's been thinking - and it's a major decision for her. She mentions that he's slept on the streets before, and he interjects, saying he'd take care of her. Danni agrees that he would, but it's not as easy for her with her diabetes. She's also concerned about having no qualifications if she leaves school.
Michael takes it badly, assuming she doesn't believe he'll look after her, and storms off. Danni pulls him back, telling him that she loves him. She warns him that if they take off together and they're caught, Cheryl and Philip will never let them see each other again. Michael scornfully points out that's what they're doing now. Danni is lost for words as Michael leaves.
The Coffee Shop
Mark is restocking the fridge when Annalise tells him to fill some orders. He snaps that she should do it as he's busy, but she tells him that he has to learn to manage by himself. Mark grumbles and Annalise points out that he's not restocking the fridge properly. He takes her reasonable criticism very badly and says that he's still learning.
Annalise worries that he's not learning quickly enough, and offers to help with the orders. He snaps at her, and she tells him to do as she says - now! Mark ignores her and carries on with what he's doing, but the box he's lifting splits at the bottom and all of the stock falls to the floor. He yells in frustration as Annalise rolls her eyes.
The Waterhole
Macca delivers Lou and Doug's illict booze to Rick, and tells him that it's only for patrons who are in the know. Rick is a bit concerned but Macca brushes his worries off, saying that they won't drink it in the Waterhole.
Annalise walks in, and Rick tells him to cover him! Macca blocks her and makes some awkward small talk, and then Rick blocks her from coming behind the bar. Annalise watches him suspiciously as she goes into the back. Rick looks flustered as Macca says that it was a close one!
Erinsborough High
Cody and Anne are talking about the Deb Ball. Anne says it's a shame that Macca is leaving the committee and guesses that Debbie's infatuation is responsible. Cody says that she doesn't know what's wrong with Debbie of late. Anne suggests that Debbie talks to someone, and offers her own services, but Cody brushes the offer away, saying that Debbie wouldn't confide in Anne. Anne suggests the youth helpline. She's sympathetic towards Debbie but warns that Debbie can't be helped if she doesn't want to be.
CODY: But she doesn't think she's got a problem! And that's what worries me.
Number 26
Michael is watching cartoons on the television. Philip tries to talk to him but Michael is reluctant. Philip begs and turns the television off. He explains that it's an impossible situation and he's only thinking about Michael's future.
MICHAEL: Yeah. One without Danni. Great(!)
Philip tells him that he's got his whole life ahead of him. They start talking about possible careers and Michael says he wants something creative and he likes architecture, or the idea of designing furniture. After briefly seeming enthusiastic, Michael slumps back down, saying he probably isn't smart enough to get the qualifications. Philip says if Michael's prepared to work at it, he's prepared to help.
Michael immediately sees red, asking if kicking him out of home is Philip's idea of help! He accuses Philip of only helping on his own terms, and whatever Michael wants doesn't come into the equation.
The Waterhole
There's some friction between Annalise and Rick as Gaby watches on. Rick shows off that he's done all of the tasks needed and deliberately refers to Gaby as the boss rather than Annalise. Rick goes for his lunch break, and Annalise asks him to tell Mark that she'll be over in a few moments to check on him.
Gaby asks Annalise if Cheryl's mentioned her plans for another theme night. Gaby talks about a ski theme - including fake snow and hearty soups! Annalise looks as if this is the worst idea she's ever heard, and she and Gaby laugh about it.
The Coffee Shop
Dave is helping in the kitchen and Mark is angry that the hot sandwiches haven't gone out in time and they're now cold.
DAVE: Just stay cool!
Mark takes the sandwiches out as Cody bursts in looking for Rick - but Rick is just behind her. He moans about Annalise and Mark agrees. Rick orders, calling Mark by his real name of 'Cosmic' - and Dave comes out and interrupts, asking if Rick wants fresh orange juice or 'that bottled stuff'. Mark and Dave go back into the kitchen.
Cody and Rick talk about his day, and Rick thinks that if he impresses Gaby and Cheryl, this could be his big break - he could find himself running the Waterhole without Annalise over him, and he could be set for life! Cody warns him that it won't happen if they find out about the homebrew. Rick stumbles awkwardly, and Cody says she saw Macca dropping it off! Rick says that it's nothing and it happens in all pubs, and he quickly changes the subject, asking her what she wanted to talk to him about.
Cody asks him to be her partner at the Deb Ball. Rick wonders why she's asking him, and Cody jokes that everyone else she's asked is busy! She laughs and says it's because he's her friend. They banter a bit about apparently not fancying each other - although it's evident they do! - and Rick agrees, saying it'd be great to catch up with everyone from school.
Number 24
Cheryl drives Danni home and is giving her a lecture about thinking about her career and all of the opportunities she's got, instead of mooning after Michael. Cheryl asks her to say something and a furious Danni points out that she can't because she can't get a word in!
They get out of the car and Danni says that Cheryl talks about listening to her point of view, but then just gives her own! Danni storms up the steps, telling Cheryl she should shut up for a change!
The Waterhole
Macca walks up to the bar with a drinker who asks for a 'special'. Rick fumbles a bit and then pulls out a beer, asking if he should be paying for it. The drinker says that Doug has an arrangement with his regulars and as he disappears with the drink, Macca gloats that it's another satisfied customer!
Dave and Mark are having a beer at the bar and Annalise joins them. She asks how it went at the Coffee Shop and Mark says it was fine although he's short staffed. Annalise says she's spoken with the management, and Mark looks pleased, saying he deserves overtime for his work today. Annalise opens her notebook and reels off a list of things he hasn't done properly! Mark is stunned but Annalise says that it's important to keep standards high.
The three go to sit down and Dave says he agrees, and he has a business proposition. He offers to make homemade pickles and chutneys. Annalise agrees, talking about a job share arrangement and saying they can work out the details later - and then she collars Rick to give him some pointers for when she takes over the Waterhole.
Number 24
Danni is crying outside and she asks Cheryl why Michael has to leave. Cheryl asks why they can't finish their education and then, if she and Michael feel the same way, they can have a relationship afterwards. Danni protests that she'll always feel the same way, and Cheryl tells her that then there's no harm in waiting!
Danni feels that it's another lecture about not drinking or going to clubs and being a diabetic. Cheryl asks Danni about what sort of career she wants, and promises not to interrupt. Danni doesn't want to do academia, but she loves music, art, and theatre. Cheryl warns that they don't pay - and Danni reminds her that she promised not to interrupt!
Danni thinks that fashion could be a great career, and Cheryl interjects - and then the two realise what she's done and laugh good naturedly, with Cheryl admitting that she's a chatterbox.
Number 26
Philip hangs up the phone and tells Michael it was Anne - she'd been trying to get Michael on an international exchange programme. Michael says he doesn't want that - and Philip says it doesn't matter, he's ineligible due to his criminal record.
Philip tells Michael about Janine joining the navy, and when Michael scoffs, Philip suggests the army could be an option. Michael is not happy and says that Philip hasn't been listening.
MICHAEL: I want to do something creative with my life and you talk about the army!
Michael is incredulous and walks out.
The Waterhole
Gaby comes in and tells Rick it's time to close up. Rick says that she's the boss - and Gaby tells him that it'll be Annalise who'll be giving the orders soon. Rick grumbles that she's already started!
GABY: Have you got a problem with that, Rick?
RICK: Only if I don't need them.
GABY: (amused) And you think you don't?
Rick points out that he's been doing a really good job, saying that the only person who could do a better job is Cheryl herself! Gaby is highly amused, saying that Cheryl will be flattered! Rick goes on about how he's an asset to the Waterhole and says that they don't need Annalise - he can just report directly to Cheryl and Gaby in the office. He goes on about how he's the face of Lassiters, so it's great publicity for him to run the bar.
RICK: Come on! What do you say?
GABY: Well, you could have a point, I suppose.
Gaby then walks behind the bar and stops dead when she sees Doug and Lou's illicit alcohol! Rick tries to play dumb but Gaby knows that it's 'Lou's lager and Doug's draught' and asks him what it's doing behind the bar. He says that he didn't think she'd mind. Gaby explodes, telling him that they're licensed premises so they can't sell homebrew on the side.
RICK: We weren't actually selling it.
GABY: What were you actually doing with it?
RICK: ...sorry, I just didn't think it was such a big deal.
GABY: Obviously! Have you got any idea the position you've put me in? If this gets out the Waterhole could be closed down!
