Clarkes
Jamie is rejecting Des over the bad smell of the rash cream, much to Des's dismay. Bronwyn takes her cup of tea to the other side of the room! Des seems to have become accustomed to the smell though and says he can't miss work. Bronwyn says if he doesn't he'll lose his customers!
Mangels
Jane and Mark arrive home. Jane is rather down and Mark wants her to tell him what's wrong. He guesses that his mother has unnerved her though. He thinks Jane is upset about spilling the drink but Jane doesn't think she'll fit in to his world. Mark looks knowing and knows that his mother said something to Jane - it's not the first time she's tried to break up one of Mark's relationships. Mark says he'll marry Jane no matter what anyone says and he'll deal with his mother. They kiss.
Joe comes in and says he's been out delivering something. He thanks Mark for the meal and Mark goes home. On his way out, he tells Jane not to worry. She does not look convinced.
Doorstep of No.30, the following morning
Mrs Chubb finds a plant on her doorstep and looks pleased.
Paul and Gail's
Gail is making breakfast and Paul can't understand her change in attitude. She says she's been thinking and says she's with him all the way on the investment. Paul hugs her. He says that they can have financial success and make babies too - the two aren't mutually exclusive.
The Coffee Shop
Mrs.Chubb is chuffed about the plant which she thinks is a Japanese maple(!) Mrs Chubb asks Bronwyn to think again about coming home, especially now she's getting crank letters. Bronwyn thinks the person has given up now though.
The Bank
Paul and Gail have come to talk about the mortgage agreement. Des says he'll get the paperwork started straightaway.
As they're leaving, Penny comes in and Gail invites her to dinner one night.
Penny and Des talk in his office and he apologises for his smell(!) She's been sent from Head Office to make Des take a couple of days off - there's been some complaints from customers. Penny is going to cover for him. Des is not happy.
Mangels
Jane is ironing and Joe says that things went well with Mark's mother. Jane tells him to shut up - they're ordinary and they don't fit in with the Grangers way of life. She tells him that Mrs Granger doesn't think she's a suitable wife for Mark. Joe says she's as good as anyone and better than most. Jane looks upset and wishes she was good enough.
Very posh house
Mark is shouting at his mother about Jane. She insists that Jane's not the right wife for Mark. Mark says there's nothing she can do to stop him marrying Jane. His mother likens marriage to engaging a business partner - you have to have someone suitable and love isn't enough. Mrs Granger doesn't think Jane would be able to manage a life in their family. Mark gets very angry and tells his mother that he's putting her on the first plane home. Then he stomps off.
Clarkes
Des comes home saying he's been blacklisted and replaced by Penny. Bronwyn looks at him knowingly and says that Des should give it another go with her.
There's a knock at the door and Bronwyn makes herself scarce. Des lets Penny in who has come to talk about the bank. Des is nervous and keeps making silly smalltalk. Then he said he's thought about her a lot and tells her he's missed her. She says that things are different now though. Des wants to start again with her, but she's going out with someone else now - Gordon Hemmings. Des is horrified. Penny gets up and says that lunch wasn't such a good idea and goes back to the office.
Outside Paul and Gail's
Paul and Gail drive up and Gail says she's got a surprise for Paul.
Paul and Gail's
Gail makes Paul close his eyes and opens the present. On it is a desk name with "Paul Robinson - Chairman" on it. Paul loves it. He's looking forward to financial security and they both laugh and hug.
Clarkes
Mrs Chubb comes round to see Des about Bronwyn. She manipulates him about the letters and asks Des to have a word with Bronwyn to suggest that she goes home. Mrs Chubb thanks him for the plant, but Des doesn't know what she's talking about. She wanders off.
Mangels
Joe is on the phone to the police using an old woman's voice saying that he wants to report an international drugs ring at No.30 Ramsay Street!
There's a knock at the door and it's Mark. Jane is sorting out the washing and Joe leaves them alone. Mark says he's talked to his mother and that she's flying back to the USA tomorrow. He wants them to look for an appartment in New York. But Jane doesn't want to come between Mark and his mother. She says she's going away for a little while to make up her mind about marrying him.
No.30
Mrs Chubb is still raving about the plant but Bronwyn thinks it looks like a weed.
Ramsay Street
Two police cars draw up and Joe greets them. He says the people in No.30 are as tough as old boots and they'd better watch themselves(!)
No.30
Bronwyn has found the plant in a botany book and tells Aunt Edie it's a marujuana plant. Mrs Chubb is horrified and says they'd better get rid of the plant quickly. They run out the back and the police intercept them. They arrest her for possession and cultivation of marujuana!
