Daphne awkwardly invites her mother in and introduces her as Tina. Apparently she is the one that wrote the cheque. Everyone is shocked to see her.
Des realises that she was the woman in the church. Tina says that she's leaving Australia in a few days, but she wanted to see her grandson before she went.
DAPHNE:(coldly) There he is. Look all you like.
Outside Paul and Gail's
Paul and Gail arrive home. They see Eileen stalking around to Mrs Mangel's. Gail thanks Paul for being an excellent hostess. Gail says that they make an good team and Paul agrees.
Eileen gossips to Mrs Mangel that Daphne's mother has turned up - she abandoned Daphne years ago. Mrs Mangel says Eileen should have stayed to find out exactly why Daphne's mother has turned up!
Harold calls to Mrs Mangel to ask if he's left any sheet music lying around. Eileen says she's not sure it's safe for Mrs Mangel to have Harold in the house - after all the tealeaves did say that he had a dark side! Mrs Mangel says she never puts herself in a position in which Harold's dark side can come to the fore!
Harold comes in at that moment and Eileen jumps.
Tina's mother says that she wanted to see Daphne as well as Jamie, it's been ten years since they spoke last. Tina says that Daphne hasn't forgiven her yet and Daphne says that she has no right to expect anything else. Tina says that when she married Daphne's father she was an empty-headed snob who wasn't in the least bit maternal. Now she's married Robert and he has two teenagers that she gets along well with - suddenly she knew what a loving family was and what she and Daphne had missed out on. She wants to make up for lost time now. Daphne says she can't forget the last twenty-five years. Tina says that maybe Daphne could write to her. Daphne says she hasn't decided whether to accept Tina's money yet. She tells Tina to give her a bit of time to think about things and come back for dinner tomorrow night.
Clarkes, the following morning
Daphne tells Des that she hopes that she won't regret letting her mother in the door. Mike says if there's any chance they could make up, Daphne should go for it.
Mrs Mangel is glad to be back at work - she is convinced things have got slack while she's been away. Paul and Gail come in and Jane congratulates Paul on the charity function which went so well. Paul tells Mrs Mangel some of his jokes but she isn't amused!
Mike tells Eileen that Daphne's mother is coming round for dinner. Harold comes out of the kitchen and Eileen jumps a mile. Harold says he'd like to take her up on her offer of a vegetarian meal tonight but Eileen says it's impossible. Harold can't understand why Eileen is acting so strangely.
Daphne is tending to Jamie and telling him how much she loves him. Eileen comes in and fusses over Jamie too. She starts angling for Daphne to invite her to the dinner this evening, but Daphne tells her that she doesn't need her help. She wants to talk things through with her mother alone. Eileen says that she won't stay where she's not wanted!
Paul opens a poster and shows it to Gail and Jane - it's a print of Jane on the bridge! Jane is the new Lassiters girl - the poster will be stuck up all over Australia and in America!
Harold is pleased at Jane's Lassiter's girl poster, but Mrs Mangel doesn't approve because she thinks men will leer over Jane's picture!
Harold asks Mrs Mangel privately if he can have a word about Eileen - her behaviour has been a bit odd lately. Mrs Mangel says that Eileen's behaviour is often very odd! She tries to be diplomatic and says that Harold has been attentive towards her lately and she may be suspecting his intentions. Harold looks perplexed!
Tina has arrived and Des gets her a soft drink. The atmosphere is rather strained between Daphne and her mother as they sit down to have a talk. Tina gives Daphne a present - it's her old music-box. Daphne is very pleased, particularly as her mother has kept it all these years.
Mrs Mangel has called Paul and Gail over to talk to them about Jane. She wonders if Jane should be employing an agent as a model. Paul says that they will come to a financial arrangement with Jane. Mrs Mangel is also worried about Jane being exploited, but Paul and Gail don't think that the posters will make Jane an overnight celebrity!
Des and Mike make themselves scarce so that Daphne and Tina can talk further. Tina is impressed with Des's personality. She says that Daphne's father isn't a bad man, he's just got his priorities mixed up - financial over emotional.
Tina tells Daphne that she still sees her father from time to time and Daphne jumps to the conclusion that her father has put Tina up to coming around to worm his way back into her life. Tina denies it and Daphne calms down a bit. Tina does say that her father didn't resent her, but he did blame her for something - for the death of the only son that he could have had.
