Madge is fussing around Dan putting cushion upon cushion behind him, she feels that Edna should be told he isn't well. Dan complains that Madge is fussing and sounding more like her mother everyday. Madge tells him that if she does it is because they both care about him. Dan feels that there is little point; Madge is having enough kittens as it is without Edna joining in as well!
Charlene comes in and asks Madge if there is anything Lucy can do as she is bored playing in the back garden. Madge tells her that she can come in and keep Dan amused. Dan rolls his eyes at the thought.
An excited Scott comes rushing in through the back door, to announce that he has passed his driving test first time. Charlene is thrilled, and suggests that they collect Lucy and he can drive them to the park. Scott tells her that he has sent Lucy home as she has a party to go to and he Jim won't let him go out in the car until they have had a serious talk on his future. He asks if he could hang around for a while as he has no desire to rush home for a lecture. Charlene tells him that it isn't a great deal of fun here at the moment as granddad is still in a bad mood.
Clive's Surgery
Clive is offering Helen tea and sympathy at the surgery. Helen is feeling guilty at the way she had spoken to Shane and Paul. Clive feels that Helen has been through a lot, with being held captive against her will. He doubts that her plain speaking will have caused either of them physiological damage and may have done some good. He wants to know what else is bothering her. Helen smiles weakly and asks if she is so transparent, but she is reluctant to tell him. She feels that it is something she has to deal with herself. Clive gently tells her that she isn't doing too well so far. Helen agrees and says that she has confided in Madge and Jim but not told them the most important part. Clive assures her that whatever she says will be kept confidential both as a friend and as her doctor.
Ramsay House
Dan is boring Scott telling him that in his day, they didn't wait for their driving licences just got into his dad's car and off he went like the clapper's. Madge comes in and hopes that Dan isn't getting over-excited; he assures her that he could still put her over his knee if he wanted to.
Charlene comes in all dressed up (Scott's eye's light up, seeing her in a tight knitted green dress). Charlene asks them if she looks alright as she is going to her mechanic's interview. Madge wonders if overalls might be more appropriate. Charlene is dismayed as Madge is always nagging her to wear dresses. Madge tells her she doesn't nag she encourages. Charlene replies that if she has to wear a dress to get a mechanic's job than that is what she will do. Dan feels she will make a bonzer mechanic.
Dan thinks he might go for a little walk, but Madge isn't so sure if it is good idea as someone needs to keep an eye on him. Madge thinks maybe she should take the day off work and look after him. Dan is horrified and feels that Madge going to work is the only peace he gets.
After Dan has left Charlene tells Madge that she isn't sure how she manages to keep a lid on her temper when he is being such a grouch. Madge becomes quite distressed and replies, that the money isn't the reason she is being nice to him it is because she loves the old goat!

Helen wants to know if Clive has a miracle cure. Clive writes on his prescription pad and tells Helen that this tonic might help....take an exceptionally long lunch and buy a ridiculously expensive dress. He wants her to just take a bit of time for her. Helen thanks Clive she feels better for unburdening herself, Clive feels that is better to have a problem out in the open. And if she can't then she doesn't know if she will be able to live with herself.
Robinson House
Scott is lying on the coach thumbing through his notes of his book. Jim comes in and asks if Scott has given anymore thought to going back to school. Scott tells him that he can't do it, it would be too humiliating being back with those "young kids". Jim tries to persuade him that it would be a small price to pay to get into journalism. Scott isn't interested. Jim relents and replies that he is old enough to make that decision for himself. But while he is in full-time education he will provide everything he needs, house, food, clothing and pocket-money but if he isn't at school then as his son there will always be a roof over his head if he wants it but nothing else.
Scott starts to get angry saying that he has no money; Jim suggests that he better start looking for a job then. Scott says that he has, but Jim feels that he hasn't been trying very hard. Scott then starts ranting about how Jim wants to see him fail and how he is such a failure compared to Paul. Jim tells Scott patiently that Paul can do some things well and Scott can do other things. Paul for instances wouldn't have the patience to sit down and write a book about his grandmother (Jim's mother).
Scott starts shouting at Jim that Jim thinks Paul would do it a lot better than him and that he is just waiting for him the fail. He throws his notes on the floor and storms off in a strop. Jim gathers up the scattered notes and sits down and starts to read them.
Clive's Surgery
Clive is telling Dan that he has his test results back and all he has wrong with him is a slight irritation of the stomach lining. Dan gets irritated with him and tells him that he can take it; he knows he has cancer and he just wants to know how long he has got. Clive assures him that there is nothing wrong and if he eats and drinks properly he has at least another twenty years! Dan is very relieved and says that he was almost too frightened to come and see him. Clive reassures him that if he gives him a couple of hours to work out a diet then he can go home to Edna. A large smirk crosses Dan's face and he says he has some unfinished business to attend to first.

Scott arrives and tells Charlene about Jim and that he is insisting that he gets a job. Kelly pipes up that he is welcome to her job if he wants it; the pay is lousy and the job is a killer but if he wants it he is welcome to it.
Mike arrives and surprise, surprise starts moaning about his shift at the coffee shop where a pack of screaming kids had eaten them selves silly and thrown up all over the coffee shop. Charlene laughs and says what a pack of whingers they are, all she wants to do is forget all about it and take off and have some fun. They all agree and Scott says he might as well take advantage of his new wheels. Kelly says that she can't go as she has to finish washing the van. Charlene takes soapy sponge off her and hands it to Scott and tells them "Come on you blokes give the girl a hand" and walks off.

Helen confirms happily that it did and she spent it all on her, as she twirls around, Jim takes no notice of her and continues to read Scott's book. Trying to get Jim's attention Helen tells him that next time that she will get them to send the bill to him. This brings Jim's attention back to what Helen was saying and he apologises and says that Scott's book is a lot better than he thinks. Unfortunately, at the moment Scott has no confidence in himself. He tells Helen about his chat with Scott and his refusal to go back to school and how he insists that if he doesn't he has to find his own living expenses. Jim asks Helen if she thinks he is being hard on him. Helen thinks it is probably what he needs. Jim feels however that with Scott's current lack of confidence that no employer would take him on.
Paul comes in and apologises to Helen if he upset her earlier. Helen replies that he still doesn't agree with what she said, Paul agrees that he doesn't. Helen apologises as well saying that she lost her temper and she shouldn't have done that but she still doesn't agree with the way he treats people. They had an agreement about Susan, she was the one to hire her and if necessary she was the one to fire her and as far as she is concerned that agreement still remains!

Clive is busily doing the housework as Shane knocks on the door. He explains to Clive that he had "copped" a lecture from Helen at work about the way he has been acting and he has been thinking about it all day and thinks she is probably right. He apologises about what he said about Clive trying to keep Jane and him apart. Clive smiles and says "That Ok.... Love makes idiots out of the best of us"
Clive continues that the ban still remains; his life would not be worth living if Mrs Mangel found out that he had encouraged him and Jane. He feels that Shane would have a better chance if he would give Jane a bit of space. Shane replies that if it is space Jane wants it is space she will have. Clive Cheers and replies "Instant maturity" Shane scoffs back "Yes it might even happen to you one day"

Paul admits that because of what happened with Terri he doesn't know what he feels about any woman anymore. Jim agrees that after he broke up with Zoë he found it very difficult to get involved with anyone. Paul says "What about Ruth Jim tells him that it is because of Ruth that he knows what he was talking about. He unconsciously led her on and when she wanted some commitment he backed off (Ooo what a rat!) Paul asks Jim if that is what he thinks he has done to Susan. Jim thinks it is. Paul moans that Susan should have given him a bit more time.
Jim scoffs and says "Come on be fair, you flaunted other women in front of her" Paul dismisses Crystal as nothing. Jim tells Paul, How was Susan supposed to know that, Susan wanted someone to love her that is why she turned to Clive. Paul tells Jim that people think he is cold, he isn't. He wants people to like him; he wants to open up to people but just doesn't know how to go about it anymore. Jim tells him that in order to get love, he has to give love. If that is what he wants that is what he has to learn to do.
Ramsay House
Madge comes home to find Dan closing his suitcase; she asks where he is off to. Dan replies "what do you care" Madge says that she does care and if he is off to hospital she has every right to know. Dan replies that he has seen Clive and the tests are clear, all he has to do is watch his diet, so the only place he is going is home; Madge is very relieved as she has been so frightened, but why didn't he tell her as soon as he found out.
Dan replies that it is no concern of hers, Madge loses her temper and replies that Dan is a horrible old man she has done her best to make things easy for him while he has been there. Dan spitefully replies that she had 50,000 reasons to make things easy for him and she shouldn't forget it. Madge replies angrily if that is the sort of daughter you think you have raised then he can shove the money. Dan replies if that is how she feels then he will as soon as he gets out of the house and storms off in a huff.
Shane who has silently come in and been listening by the door says to a very despondent Madge "Do you know what you have just done"

Mike looks at the sea and says that it looks a bit cold and besides which the girls didn't bring their togs (Swimming costumes) Kelly shrugs and says who needs them! The boys look a bit shocked at the suggestion...Scott utters "What...Skinny dipping you mean!" Kelly replies "Well why not Charlene is up to a bit of irresponsibility" Charlene chips in "I am in for it" The boys aren't too sure and look at each other nervously. Kelly asks him are you chicken or what. But the macho side of the boys comes out and assures them that they aren't.
Whispering to one side the boys ask each other waht the other thinks. They finally decided that if one will the other will. They finally agree to it with the girls. Dan tells her to take a look inside; Madge opens to find a cheque for $50,000. Dan tells her that he thinks that he and Edna can afford to advance her the money until Aunt Maud's money comes though. Bare shouldered Kelly and Charlene pop up from behind the boat and ask the boys if they are ready. Rather nervously the boys pop up as well and say they are if the girls are. The boys make a dash for the sea obviously covering their "manhood" as they run. The girls pop out from behind the boat pulling up the straps of their top's to relive they are still fully clothed. They gather up the boys' clothes and shoes; as the boys finally make it to the sea and look for the girls they see them running up the sand dune...
