Mrs Mangel's
Mike rants at Mrs Mangel and says he wouldn't be surprised if she'd written the letter herself to keep him away from Jane! Mike tells Mrs Mangel off then storms out saying he feels sorry for her and her little life.
The Pub
Madge is worried that Ray will get her into trouble with Paul. Clive tells her not to worry.
Paul comes in at that moment and they tell him that everything is fine. Paul looks a bit suspicious, but wanders off back to the office.
The Coffee Shop
Mike comes in and sits dejectedly at a table. He tells Daphne that he must be jinxed - whenever things are going well for him, they fall apart.
MIKE: Anyone would think I was Jack the Ripper.
Daphne says that Jane will get over it in time, but Mike says he doesn't know who to trust anymore. Daphne tells him to have confidence in his friends.
The Pub
Clive and Madge are chatting happily during a quiet period. Madge is still worried about her parents marriage though.
Just then, Paul and Ray come in. Paul asks Madge if it's true that she's got Mr Murphy's car keys. Madge explains that Ray was too drunk to drive, but Paul orders her to return his keys. Paul apologises to Ray and says next time he comes in, the first drink is on the house.
When Ray has gone, Paul tells Madge and Clive off. Clive says that he thinks that Madge did the right thing, but Paul says that the customer is always right. Ray gives him a lot of business and they have to keep him sweet.
Later at the pub
Madge is mad about the situation with Ray - she's worried that she's lost her authority at the pub.
The Coffee Shop
Jane comes in and sits dejectedly at the counter. She asks Daphne for advice - she wonders if there's any truth in the letter. Daphne says she doesn't believe a word of the contents of the letter - in any case an anonymous letter is very cowardly. She tells Jane that she has to make her own mind up - not listen blindly to Mrs Mangel.
Charlene comes in and she and Jane sit at a table. Charlene says that the letter is a sick joke and she knows what that's like. Charlene tells Jane to go and apologise to Mike for not believing him.
Clarkes
Mike is playing his saxophone when Sue calls round. She gives Mike some work for school. Sue is trying to ingratiate herself with Mike and winds him up saying that Jane should have believed in him. Sue says that she herself believes Mike and she's always thought he was a great guy! She tells Mike to call her any time he needs a friend to talk to.
Scott calls round just as Sue is leaving. He's surprised to see Sue there.
The Coffee Shop
Jane has decided to go and apologise to Mike, but just then Mike and Scott come in. Scott tells Mike that Sue's presence is suspicious. Jane is about to apologise when Mrs Mangel comes in. She tells Mike that she doesn't know how he can show his face in public. Everyone there defends Mike, but he storms out.
When Mike has gone, Charlene tells Mrs Mangel off for sullying Mike's reputation - she has no facts. Jane agrees - she's done everything to please Mrs Mangel, but just this once she's going to do something for her. She goes after Mike.
Outside Lassiters
Jane catches up with Mike and tells him that she's sorry for not believing him at first, but Mrs Mangel influenced her. Mike says reasonably that Mrs Mangel is still her grandmother, but Jane says that she's fed up of her. She and Mike have a bit of a pash. They decide to be boyfriend/girlfriend. Jane laughs and says that Mike will become known as Tarzan!
The Pub
CLIVE:(brightly) Good afternoon Mrs Mangel! You look positively radiant this afternoon!
MRS MANGEL: Don't you try to sweet talk me!
Mrs Mangel tells Clive off for showing the contents of the letter to other people. But Clive says that Mike had the right to see the contents of the letter. Mrs Mangel says that the letter has caused a lot of damage to her relationship with Jane. Clive pretends to be sympathetic and advises Mrs Mangel to give Jane some time to cool down. She agrees and thanks Clive for his good advice. When she's gone, Clive rolls his eyes!
The Coffee Shop
Scott and Charlene are trying to guess how many Smarties there are in the jar for a competition.
Sue comes in and Scott and Charlene tell her about the drama at the Coffee Shop that afternoon. Sue says she's looking for Mike and they should tell him that she dropped in to say hi. Scott and Charlene look suspicious.
The Pub
Paul is ranting at Madge for not doing the measures of alcohol properly.
Ray comes in. Madge says that she's fed up of the way she's been treated today. But Ray has come to apologise to Madge - he was actually pulled over by the police this afternoon. If Madge had let him have another drink he'd have been over the limit and the police would have thrown the book at him, which would have been disastrous for his business. He tells Paul that he's got himself a great barmaid in Madge.
Mrs Mangel's letterbox
Sue is watching from a distance as Mrs Mangel takes in the post. Then she approaches the front door with another letter. Unfortunately for Sue, Daphne is walking up the street and sees her deposit another letter under Mrs Mangel's door. Daphne grabs hold of Sue saying she's got a few questions she's like to ask her!
