She says she thought Madge would have a fit if she turned up with a baby, so she found him a foster mother. Now the "foster mother" is sick, so she had no choice but to bring the baby home. Madge wants to know why Fred didn't support her, but Charlene says he had to think of Susan.
Madge threatens to call Fred, but Charlene says that he's shot through - he doesn't live in Coff's Harbour anymore. Apparently he's sold the business too. Madge is appalled and starts to cry - she put twenty years of her life into that business.
Paul is cross that Scott hasn't been keeping to the roster and starts shouting at him again. Scott throws the roster on the floor and says he's sick of it. He says some things are more important. He tells them about Charlene's baby and says he'll never trust her again as long as he lives.
The baby is crying and Charlene is comforting him. Madge asks her who the father is, but Charlene says that he ran away when he found out she was pregnant.
Madge says she never thought that Charlene would end up as an unmarried mother. She agrees to let Charlene and the baby stay on. Charlene says she'll get a job to support the baby, but Madge says she must stay at school. She starts to soften towards the baby but if startled when Charlene tells her his name - Frederick Samuel. But Charlene says that she calls him Sam. Madge says she'll have to ask Tom and Shane, but provisionally, they can stay.

Madge asks to speak to Scott and she apologises to him for being so abrupt with him earlier. She tells him that the baby is Charlene's. Scott tells Madge that she's a hypocrite and he doesn't want anything to do with Charlene.
Shane and the girl are flirting at the bar, but she's already got a boyfriend it seems. He has just turned up, an hour late. Shane tells the boyfriend (Barry) that he should treat the girl better. Barry challenges Shane to a darts match at 3 o'clock tomorrow. Shane says he has to work, but he'll arrange his time somehow.
Madge and Charlene are eating dinner. Madge says that the rest of the street will be scandalised. Charlene says she wants to see Scott, but Madge says she's already talked to him and he doesn't want to see Charlene. She says it's only to be expected - Charlene has led Scott a merry dance. Charlene says that Scott said he loved her before all this happened, but Madge says she's used Scott. Charlene looks upset saying that she loves Scott.
Scott is studying at the kitchen table when Paul comes to join him. Scott is frosty toward him but Paul says he cares about him more than Scott thinks. He tells Scott to ask himself how important Charlene is to him. Scott says he can't handle the fact that Charlene has lied to him, and besides, if he went back to her he'd be a laughing stock at school. Paul says that's not important and that Charlene must have had a good reason for lying to him. He tells Scott that he should give her the chance to explain.
Tom and Shane are surprised to see the baby and Charlene explains the situation. Tom says he'll find the father and arrange a shotgun wedding(!) Madge tells Tom and Shane that she'll need them to contribute financially if they're to keep the baby. Shane comments that the baby looks a lot like Uncle Fred(!) Charlene pleasd with Tom and Shane to help out and they reluctantly agree. Tom hugs Charlene.
