Piper is making a "Pipe Up" video.
PIPER: By midnight tonight, 2016 wil officially be over. And...to be honest, I'm kind of glad to see the back of it. Hmm. It's been a really intense and crazy year. A lot's happened. And some good stuff has happened as well. Um...some *really* good stuff. But...I can't really talk about it...
The camera pans back and we see that Tyler is sitting in front of her.
PIPER: It's something that I've wanted for a really long time!
Tyler opens his mouth in shock and laughs as he drags her phone down.
TYLER: It's *so* obvious!
PIPER: No, it's not! Tyler, Mum doesn't watch my channel!
He just looks at her.
PIPER: OK, she doesn't watch it all the time...
He laughs.
PIPER: I'm sorry...I wish we could be like a normal couple.
TYLER: Maybe we can.
PIPER: Very cryptic.
TYLER: Alright...it was going to be a surprise...
PIPER: What?
TYLER: Your mum's at Brad and Lauren's all night, yeah?
PIPER: Yeah, for some reason.
TYLER: Yeah, maybe she won't miss you for an hour or two? And maybe we could, you know...
PIPER: What?
TYLER: Go to the City?
PIPER: Yes! I want see the fireworks!
TYLER: Yes, and the places that...mean something to us?
Piper picks up her phone.
TYLER: What are you doing?
PIPER: I am going to see if we can get a last-minute hotel deal.
He takes her phone off her.
TYLER: It's taken care of.
Piper puts her hand to her face in joy.
TYLER: I wanted it to be special.
Just then they are interrupted.
TERESE: Piper!
Tyler quickly hides before Terese comes into the room.
TERESE: Piper! Clementine's thrown up all over the carpet!
PIPER: I know, I'm sorry, I think she needs to go back on those other cat biscuits, cos...
TERESE: Great, so you saw it and just ignored it(!) That *wasn't* the deal.
PIPER:(blocking her path) Yeah...aren't you supposed to be across the road tonight?
TERESE: Look, don't get me wrong...I wish your Dad and Lauren the best of luck, but I am *this* close to being sick myself.
PIPER: Mmmm...newlyweds a bit much?
TERESE: Let's just say that I draw the line at "the other woman" giving me, you know, advice on my love life. I'm perfectly happy being single, thank you very much.
PIPER: Yeah, no...me, too, Mum!
TERESE: Hey, what are you doing? Do you want me to get some food and we can watch the fireworks on the TV together?
Piper's face falls a bit.
TERESE: Unless you've got some other plans.
Piper is speechless.
TERESE:(disappointed) You know what, I've got some work to do...it's fine.
PIPER: No, no, no, let's do that. Sounds good.
TERESE: OK.
She heads off to the kitchen, leaving Piper to sigh and close her eyes.

Tyler is walking up to the rotunda when Piper catches up with him.
PIPER: Ty!
They go in ot the rotunda.
PIPER: I'm so sorry, you heard what my mum said before, I couldn't say no. And if there's ever a night for someone to fall off the wagon...
TYLER: It's fine, I'm just frustrated, that's all. I worked really hard to get a table at...
Piper puts her hands over her ears.
PIPER: No, don't, don't! Don't, I don't even want to know, it's just going to be too painful...
They walk out of the rotunda holding hands.
PIPER: I'm seriously impressed, though. Points for trying.
TYLER: I'm doing alright in the boyfriend stakes?
PIPER: Yeah! You're doing even better at being a secret boyfriend...cos seriously, no idea how she didn't see you!
TYLER: It's probably blurry vision from all the Brad and Lauren rage!
PIPER: Yeah, well, better than from a bottle of wine.
TYLER: Yeah. Well, at least she's raging at them, instead of me.
PIPER: Yeah.
They arrive at the lake and Piper puts her hands on his shoulders.
PIPER: Hey, can you do me a favour?
TYLER: Anything.
PIPER: Go into the City tonight. Go and do all those things without me. It's not fair that you miss out on the fireworks.
TYLER: That's not the only thing I'll be doing...I'll be letting my hair down, going to the spa...
Piper puts her hands over her ears again.
PIPER: Oh, no, don't, stop!!
TYLER:(laughing) Whatever you want.
They kiss.
Later, at No.22, Piper and Terese are watching TV in the living room in silence.
TERESE: Having fun?
PIPER: Yeah.
Another silence descends.
PIPER: You?
TERESE: Mmmm...yep.
Silence descends again.
Later, Piper is looking at a picture of herself and Tyler on her phone.
PIPER: Mum, do we have any more bargees? Mum?
Terese doesn't reply and Piper realises that she has fallen asleep. She quietly gets up.
Cut to Piper walking along a road, leaving a message on Tyler's voicemail.
PIPER: Hey, Ty, um...so, Mum fell asleep and I'm coming to find you in the City. Um...so, give me a call back when you get this. Alright, bye...!
Cut to Melbourne City Centre. Piper passes Flinders Street Station, still trying to call Tyler.
TELEPHONE VOICE: We are unable to connect your call. Please try again later.
PIPER: Ohhhh!
Later, Piper has now sent Tyler many texts with no response. She sighs.
PIPER:(into the camera) I have no idea when I'll be able to upload this...because everything will have to be out in the open and I've no idea when that day is going to come. So, basically, I'm kind of in the city, alone, trying to find my boyfriend. And...it's proving to be impossible. Because it's New Year, and how am I meant to find anyone? There are, like, a thousand people here, cos it's Melbourne and it's the City. How? How? Seriously, how am I meant to find him?
She sighs.
PIPER: If I was Tyler Brennan, where would I go? Just try and channel...
Suddenly she gets a look of understanding on her face and starts off across a road.

Piper walks along the street in China Town looking for Tyler, but she doesn't see him.
PIPER: Hey, guys...so...it's still just me...looks like it's just going to be the two of us here tonight, because there's still no sign of the boyfriend...it's like a scavenger hunt. And it would be really fun if it was under different circumstances. Anyway, so...I...came to China Town because China Town is special. I hear you asking why...um...so, we came here together when we were just friends, and, I don't know, it's in a vlog from, like, ages ago, y'know. Anyway, we came here together and...I don't know, like, that night, I just realised that it wasn't going to be...it wasn't going to be like an "if" with Tyler, it was going to be "when", like when are we going to be together...I don't know if that makes sense, but, yeah...I just knew that, yeah. Anyway, we were here, at this very dumpling shop, and I was starving, we didn't know if it was open or not, and Ty was like, 'You should have faith in the universe, Pipes. Just have faith.' Well, Universe...
She puts a hand by her mouth to call.
PIPER: Where are you at? Where are you at? Can you hear me? Because I'm losing faith.
She looks sad.
PIPER: And if I don't laugh about it, I'm going to cry, because I'm at the end of my tether...
She sighs deeply.
In the background, Tyler comes out of their Chinese restaurant with some dumplings, looking at a picture of him and Piper on his phone. Unfortunately, Piper is a little way down the street with her back to him, and they don't see each other.

Piper walks along a road and eventually sits down on a bench. A somewhat drunk woman stumbles over to the bench on high heels.
WOMAN: Is anyone sitting here?
PIPER: Um, no...
WOMAN: Perfect.
PIPER: Go for it.
The woman sits down uncomfortably close to Piper, who winces. The woman offers Piper a chip from an open carton.
PIPER: I'm good, they're yours.
WOMAN: It's alright, I can't finish them all, I mean, you look like you could use the...
PIPER:(interrupting) Thanks, I'll wait.
A silence descends.
WOMAN: Have you...have you been stood up?
PIPER: What makes you ask that?
WOMAN: Uh...you're all dressed up. No-one to take you out to dinner?
PIPER: Yeah, uh...that was the plan.
WOMAN: Huh. So, you've had a pretty crappy night then, eh?
PIPER: Yeah...um, to be honest, compared to the rest of my year, it hasn't been that bad.
WOMAN: Why, what happened? Did you get bad news from the doctor?
PIPER: Oh my God...wow. Um...
WOMAN:(sympathetically) Hey...
PIPER: Look, thank you, thanks, thanks. But I just kinda want to be alone right now, and just like, look at the fireworks and like, just think some stuff through and just, yeah, thank you, but, sorry...I just don't want to right now.
WOMAN: OK. Jeez...no wonder he didn't turn up.
PIPER: Wow, really? OK, OK, thank you, I can't...
They both stand up at the same moment and Piper is jostled, turning over on her ankle and being pushed to the ground.
WOMAN: Woah!
PIPER:(shocked) Are you serious? (Sarcastically) Yeah, thanks, Happy New Year!
The woman has now walked off, leaving Piper standing there in pain, trying not to cry.
Later, Piper limps along a road, still trying to call Tyler. Finally, the network clears a little and she gets through.
TYLER: Pipes?
PIPER: Oh my God, Tyler! Can you hear me?
TYLER: Hello?
PIPER: Ty, I'm in the City, where are you? I'm in...
TYLER: It's really hard to hear...
PIPER:(the line is breaking up) I'm in the City. Where are you? Where are you?
TYLER: I'm by the river. The view is incredible.
PIPER: The river, where? Pardon? Ty, I can't hear...hello?
TYLER: Hello?
But the line has dropped out. Piper groans in frustration.
Tyler stands by the river and wonders where she is.
Later, Piper limps along a bridge and sees Tyler in the distance on a lower level.
PIPER: Oh my God! Tyler! Tyler! Ty!
But he is walking with his back to her and doesn't see her.
PIPER: Ty! Ty!
But it is no use and Piper looks upset.
Later, Piper is standing on a bridge making a vlog.
PIPER:(into the camera) So, New Year's Eve...like the rest of 2016, is just an absolute disaster. I mean, like, I don't know why I'm surprised, because it's me, and...I think I have to accept the fact that nothing's like, ever going to go right. I'm like, what's the point in, like, hoping and wishing for everything to be perfect when, like...I'd settle for OK right now. But, that's not going to happen. Because it's me, it's not going to happen for me, because...
But just then, Tyler comes up behind her and puts his hands over her eyes. She turns round in surprise and is staggered to see him there.
PIPER: Oh my God!
They have a long hug.
PIPER:(joyfully) Oh my God!
TYLER:(releasing the hug) Where have you been?
PIPER: I've been looking for you...
They kiss.
TYLER: Huh? I've been right here!
PIPER: Oh my God...
TYLER:(looking at her phone) What are you filming?
PIPER: I...
TYLER: What's this?
PIPER: It doesn't even matter. It does not matter.
TYLER: Huh? Everything's not perfect.
PIPER: I was...
TYLER: I heard.
PIPER: You heard?
TYLER: Yes, I did.
PIPER: You heard my vlog...arghhh.
She groans in embarrassment. Tyler smiles at her.
PIPER: Look, I just feel like the universe is against us.
Tyler reacts to this with a scornful face.
PIPER: Like, the idea of us being together because, like, everything...
TYLER: Come on, everything? We are here together.
PIPER: I know...
She hugs him again.
TYLER: Alright, let's go! Come on!
She grimaces with the pain of her ankle.
PIPER: Argh! I had a weird thing happen to my ankle.
TYLER: What?
PIPER: I fell...
TYLER: You fell?
PIPER: Well, I was tripped by a rude girl...it's a long story...it's a long story...
TYLER: OK.
She is hobbling with her arm around his neck, then he picks her up and carries her.

Back in the hotel room's bathroom, Tyler puts an ice-pack on Piper's ankle.
PIPER: Ow!
TYLER: It's OK, OK, OK...is it any better?
PIPER: Mmm-hmm...no, no...I'm sorry! I'm sorry!
She puts her hands over her face.
PIPER: I just, like, ruined our night.
TYLER: No, hey, hey, it's fine. It's all good, OK? It's not your fault you can't walk.
PIPER: Shut up!
They laugh.
TYLER: Too soon?
PIPER: Look. OK, I think the lesson that we've learned is here is that we just...we don't go anywhere without wifi or 4G.
TYLER: Well, clearly...come on, let's get you up.
She winces in pain.
TYLER: Alright, be careful...(joking) meet you in there!
PIPER: Come back, help me!
He helps her up.
TYLER: Aw, the pain, I can feel it from here!
He tries to carry her through the door, but they get stuck. Laughing, they sit down on the bed.
Later, Tyler is standing at the window looking out, but Piper is looking sad.
TYLER: How good is the view?! You can see for miles.
He turns, and sees her pensive expression.
TYLER: Hey. You alright?
PIPER: Mmm?
TYLER: You alright?
PIPER: Sorry, did you just, like, miss the whole ankletastrophe?
She sighs.
TYLER: What's going on?
PIPER: No, no, this is meant to be romantic...we have this hotel room...and...
TYLER: Hey, stop, I don't care. I want to know what's going on inside my girlfriend's head.
She pauses.
PIPER: I don't know, I just keep thinking about everything that's happened this year. Sorry...I know this is so stupid...
TYLER: Stop, stop, it's fine, OK? It's fine.
She pauses again.
TYLER: Is this...is it Josh?
She nods, almost imperceptibly. He waits for her to speak.
PIPER: It's just, like, everyone's so happy at the moment, like it being Christmas and New Year and it's...it's all I can think about, and I *hate* it, Ty. I hate it, it's just...I get so angry and I want to distract myself and I just can't...
TYLER: Hey, hey, hey, you *won't* forget about him, OK? You can't. Life's not eternal sunshine. Look. Look at me. We're together. And you can talk to me about anything. Whatever you want. Hey? Except for when the mobile network goes down.
She smiles and laughs a bit.
TYLER: How about this? We make it our New Year's Resolution. Hmmm?
Piper thinks about it.
PIPER: Mmmm...we going to have to swap it with 'going to the gym more', but...
TYLER: You can talk to me at the gym.
PIPER: Um, no, I can't, because you're like...
She imitates him doing weights.
TYLER: Oh...!
Just then, midnight comes and fireworks go up outside.
TYLER: Happy New Year.
PIPER: Happy New Year.
They kiss and then hug, watching the fireworks. They are still sitting there a few hours later when the sun comes up, Piper dozing on Tyler's shoulder.
