Harold's Café
Jane arrives to meet Clint at the time they'd agreed for breakfast, and he shows her a copy of Pride and Prejudice that was left at the book exchange. He's excited because the previous owner has written comments in the margins expressing interpretations he'd never considered. Nicolette watches the interaction from the counter.
JANE: I'm sorry, Clint, but I... I can't have breakfast with you.
She makes an excuse about having to meet Terese at Eirini Rising, but Clint senses that something is wrong. Jane tells him to have a lovely time with Addison, and is about to hurry off when Clint insists that she take the book - he thought of her when he saw it. Uncomfortably, she thanks him and leaves with the book. Clint looks disappointed and then catches Nicolette glaring at him. She quickly turns away.
Ramsay Street
Holly is walking home when she sees Max across the road putting the bin out. They stop and look at each other, but Max is clearly still angry with her and walks back indoors without a word. Andrew then turns up and asks Holly how she's going.
HOLLY: Do you mean the pregnancy, or being the scarlet woman of the street?
ANDREW: Don't say that.
HOLLY: I'm focusing on the baby. That's what's important.
ANDREW: If you need help with anything, just tell me what you need.
HOLLY: Thanks.
Wendy and Sadie pull up in a car, back from their stay at the city hotel. Andrew tells Holly he hasn't been in touch with them - and when they get out of the car, both Wendy and Sadie look annoyed to see him talking to Holly. Holly is worried that Sadie and Wendy might think they only confessed to the affair because of the clues Taye found at the V- Bar. Andrew has no idea whether that's the case.
No 26
Sadie asks Wendy if she's okay after seeing Holly and Andrew, as they unload their bags in the kitchen. Wendy assures her she'll survive. Andrew then walks in, much to Wendy's annoyance.
ANDREW: Hi. Is it okay that I'm here?
WENDY (slamming shopping around): Depends on why that is.
ANDREW: I just wanted to explain. It's the first time I've seen Holly since you left. I just wanted to make sure that she was okay.
WENDY: How very thoughtful of you (!)
Andrew is also keen to reassure them that neither he nor Holly saw Taye's messages about the V- Bar - Andrew had already decided to come clean independently of that. Wendy tells him that it really doesn't matter now.
ANDREW: Yes it does. You're my wife.
WENDY: ... Not for long.
ANDREW: What I did was unforgivable. But I still love both of you very much, and if you have any questions that you want to ask -
WENDY (shouting): Can you just stop with the details? Okay, you have made it very clear on how this has all affected you. And if you're here to ask to come home, well, then, that's not an option.
ANDREW: I know that.
WENDY: Good. Because we're not leaving, and you're not welcome here.
Andrew tells them he's staying at No 30 while Cara and JJ are away. Sadie asks if they're in Werribee for the memorial.
ANDREW: There's not gonna be a memorial. Greg's still alive.
Sadie and Wendy look shocked.
No 28
Karl is rereading one of Elle's articles about 'Jonesy', while Holly tells Susan about Wendy and Sadie arriving home just as she was talking to Andrew. Holly wonders if she should go and apologise to Wendy.
SUSAN (terse): Just give her time, Holly.
HOLLY: Well, I don't want her to think I'm, like, ignoring her.
SUSAN (terse): You have to take your cues from Wendy. If she wants to talk, she'll come to you, and if she doesn't, well, the least you can do is respect that.
Holly looks downbeat, clearly sensing Susan's disappointment. Susan asks how Holly feels about Andrew's offer to help out with the baby. Holly thinks it could make things messy, but he is the father after all.
KARL (annoyed): Don't let him guilt you into anything.
HOLLY: That's not what he was doing, Dad.
KARL: You don't owe that man a single thing, alright?
No 32
In the garden, Max is sitting forlornly by the pool, staring at the unfinished rocking horse. Jane arrives to check in. Max assumes his dad sent her; she admits that they have been messaging, but says she was intending to pop in anyway.
JANE: I suppose it's a silly question to ask you how you're feeling?
MAX (tearful): You know, the thing I really want to know is, umm... did Holly ever really love me?
JANE: Oh, Max.
MAX: Or was I just a stopgap on the way to her next big mistake?
JANE: Speaking from experience... when it comes to heartbreak, sometimes there are questions that - well, you just never know the answer to.
Jane has brought Max a parcel that she found addressed to him at the front of the house, and it turns out to be wood stain that he'd ordered for restoring the rocking horse. Max's lip trembles. Jane looks sympathetic.
No 26
Andrew admits to Sadie and Wendy that there's a good chance he could lose his job over the situation with Greg. He insists he only kept Greg's secret of being involved with the Linwells because he was 'trying to fix things here', adding that he'd already broken things off with Holly.
WENDY: Oh, please. You just... stop talking.
ANDREW: I mean, I couldn't give a rat's if they sack me. The only thing I really care about is you two.
WENDY: Well, you picked a really good time to get your priorities straight (!) I mean, imagine if you had this epiphany before you slept with your daughter's best friend and got her pregnant.
Andrew asks Wendy if she intends to go back to work, but she's done having him lingering around.
WENDY: You gave up the right to be involved in our lives when you chose Holly over your family. Now, I'd like you to leave.
Andrew hesitates, then does as he's told. Sadie looks wistfully at family photos on the shelf.
Ramsay Street
Karl is bringing the bins out as Andrew exits No 26, and greets Karl with a 'morning'. Karl ignores him, but seemingly a glutton for punishment, Andrew approaches.
ANDREW: I've been half expecting you to kick my door down. I just want to say that I want to thank you for being so... understanding.
KARL (furious): Understanding? I don't *understand*. Not for a second.
He gets right up close to Andrew.
KARL: The other night, you tried to make a comparison between my history and what you've done. There is no comparison - you and I are not the same.
ANDREW: Karl, I... all I meant was maybe... maybe you can relate.
KARL: To what? Relate to *what*, Andrew?!
No 28
Holly overhears Karl raising his voice and looks out of the window.
Ramsay Street
Andrew replies to Karl.
ANDREW: Mistakes, temptation. I...
KARL: Temptation?!
Karl shoves Andrew furiously.
KARL: That's my daughter you're talking about!
ANDREW: I didn't mean it like that.
Karl shoves him again.
KARL: Mate, you are absolute scum, do you know that? And I hope - do you know what I hope? I hope the police force fire you! I hope Wendy never takes you back!
Holly rushes out of the house to see Karl grabbing Andrew by the collar.
KARL: And if you think my daughter's gonna have anything to do with you -
But at this point Holly intervenes, begging Karl to stop. Karl walks back indoors, clutching his head in anguish. Holly follows him. Andrew is breathless and disconcerted.
No 28
Back indoors, Susan has appeared as Holly asks Karl why he did that.
HOLLY: Everything's bad enough already!
KARL: I'm sorry - I'm sorry. I tried to bite my tongue, but he kept going on about how 'understanding' I am. I mean, there's no comparison between what he did and what I did.
Karl looks to Susan for validation on this point.
KARL: You agree, don't you? It's s completely different situation.
But Susan doesn't respond to Karl, instead telling Holly to sit down and take a breath, while she puts the kettle on. Karl looks disconcerted by Susan's lack of support for his position. An awkward silence descends.
HOLLY: I'm sorry this is so hard for both of you.
SUSAN: We're fine.
HOLLY: No you're not. I'm a walking trigger for you and Dad.
KARL: Perhaps we should talk about it?
But Susan stammers that she needs to hang the washing out, and rushes off into the garden. Karl looks worried, and heads off to the bedroom. Holly sighs.
No 32
In the garden, a tearful Max is about to smash the rocking horse with a hammer - but he can't bring himself to do it, and kicks the horse away instead as he drops to the floor, sobbing.
No 30
Felix is with Andrew in the kitchen, and asks if he's going to be okay. 'Who knows?' Andrew replies.
FELIX: Anything I can do?
ANDREW: Find me a time machine so I can go back to before I blew up my life?
FELIX: Could've used one of those a few times myself.
ANDREW: Yeah. What do I do? I love Wendy.
FELIX: I know.
ANDREW: There's Holly too. I mean, I hurt her. And she's carrying my baby; I need to support her. But how the hell do I balance all that?
Felix doesn't have any answers, but at this point Holly calls round to apologise for Karl getting aggro with Andrew. Andrew says he deserved it, but thanks Holly for coming. After an awkward pause, she leaves again.
No 26
Wendy is angrily washing up when Sadie comes in. She wants to know if it really doesn't mean anything to her that Andrew independently decided to tell her about the affair, rather than being forced into it by Taye's message.
WENDY: I don't really care how or why it happened, Sade. It still happened.
But Sadie doesn't look wholly satisfied at this, so...
No 30
She goes round to see Andrew.
SADIE: You asked earlier if we had any questions. I do. I want to know the truth.
Andrew nods.
Harold's Café
Clint presents Jane with some artisan bread from an Italian bakery he went to with Addison on the way to dropping her off at the library. Jane is uncomfortable at accepting another gift from Clint. Nicolette is watching again from the kitchen.
CLINT: Jane, have I done something to upset you?
JANE: No. It's been really lovely reconnecting with you, Clint, but I... I just feel as though maybe I should take a step back.
CLINT: A step back from...?
JANE: Well, just to give you more space to focus on Addison.
CLINT: Yeah, that's what I'm trying to do. I'm just appreciating your support.
JANE: And I will continue to support you and Addison, as her school principal.
Nicolette grimaces as she continues to watch while trying to get the lid off a stubborn jar!
JANE: But I think maybe we should leave it at that.
CLINT: Well... Addison thought you might like the bread.
Jane sighs, looking guilty as Clint leaves. When Nicolette asks how it went, Jane admits that she seems to have offended Clint.
No 30
Sadie asks Andrew if he was always attracted to Holly, and he says no.
SADIE: When did it start? Mack and Haz's wedding? My twenty- first?
ANDREW: No, it was recent. When she was helping me look for Steven and Gretchen. Your mum and I weren't in a good place, and... Holly was someone to talk to.
SADIE: So how do you go from talking to having an affair?
ANDREW: ... It was probably all the Bowman stuff that really changed things.
SADIE: What, when she was being stalked?
ANDREW: Holly was really scared, and she relied on me for protection.
SADIE: She had Max. Plus, Bowman moved away.
ANDREW: Yeah, even so, she found a way to keep it going.
SADIE: What does that mean?
ANDREW (hesitates): There was a time when she pretended that Bowman was hanging around, and he wasn't.
SADIE: She faked it?
ANDREW: I was invested. And I didn't look into things properly. Which caused a pretty fiery argument between us. And that turned into something more. But I've got to own my part in this as well. As things got more complicated, she did ask me to stay away from her.
SADIE: Yeah, right. So was this before or after she faked being stalked?
ANDREW: After.
SADIE: You said that you tried to cut it off a few times. Holly just couldn't take no for an answer?
ANDREW: She didn't want to let go. I struggled too. But I knew that... I love your mum. And I love you, and I love our family. I knew that I'd made a terrible, terrible mistake.
SADIE (scoffs): You're such a cliché. Mum tried really hard to reconnect with you.
ANDREW: Yeah. I hate myself for what I've done.
SADIE: Well, you know what? Holly knew what she was doing.
No 26
Wendy has rustled up some tea and biccies for Susan, who has called round to see how she's doing. Wendy says that she's 'still processing' Andrew and Holly's affair.
SUSAN: Holly's my stepdaughter, and I love her. But I've been where you are. I'm sure you know all about Sarah and Isabelle.
WENDY: But you and Karl, you... you got past it.
SUSAN: Well, yes, we did, after a long time apart. Took a lot of hard work. A lot of rebuilding of trust.
WENDY: You know, we really don't need to talk about this.
SUSAN: Yeah, we do. We do. I want you to know that you're not alone. And that I understand the pain, the grief, the rage, the *shame*.
WENDY: Yeah, yeah. You... you do feel shame, don't you? It's like... it's your fault that he cheated. Like... you weren't enough.
SUSAN: Well, complete rubbish, obviously. But since when have feelings made sense?
WENDY: What made you decide to hang in there?
SUSAN: Three kids. A shared history. I've spent more time with Karl than I have without him. But really, it... it's just that the world only makes sense when we're together. But it took us a long time to get to that place.
WENDY (emotional): You know, sometimes I... I feel so much hurt and anger. Like I just want to throw up. But what hurts the most is that Andrew is gonna be a father again. And we always wanted to have another baby. But I could never... I could never conceive, and... and now he's gonna have that with Holly. She's gonna be the one to give him that.
Susan squeezes Wendy's hand supportively.
No 32
Jane calls in on Max again, who is still sitting in the garden. He admits he was going to smash up the rocking horse, but couldn't.
MAX: It's not the horse's fault, is it?
Jane sits down next to him. She has brought him some of the baked goods that Clint gave her.
JANE: You know, you've done a really lovely job at sanding that horse. You know what the great painters of Europe would do in this situation?
MAX: You're not gonna ask me to cut my ear off, are you?
JANE (laughs): Well, only if you don't get back on the horse! No... you've got the stain and, well, it would be a shame if some child didn't benefit from all of the hard work you've put in. So what say we finish it together, hmm? ... Well, come on.
Max smiles.
Lassiter's Complex
Nicolette is clearing tables outside the café when Clint turns up. He asks her if she's said something to Jane about him.
NICOLETTE: Yeah. I questioned your priorities. They should be with Addison.
CLINT: They are.
NICOLETTE: Then why do you keep inviting Mum along to all your outings? Why did you sneakily arrange time alone with her this morning before you were due to meet Addison? A crusty old book and a loaf of bread? It seems like you're trying to win her back.
CLINT: You're right. I did engineer things so that I could have some time with Jane this morning.
NICOLETTE: Busted, buddy.
But Clint claims it wasn't in order to romance Jane - rather, he wanted to get the lowdown from her on Krista and Leo, as he isn't sure whether he should be worried about their fostering plans and how they affect Addison. He wanted to introduce the subject casually so as not to make a big deal of it.
CLINT: Look, I'm sorry you got the wrong idea (...) I've been enjoying Jane's company, that's true. But if I'm confusing matters, I'll totally back off.
Nicolette looks a bit contrite and doesn't say any more, so Clint heads off.
No 28
Sadie calls round to confront Holly about faking being stalked by Gavin Bowman in order to keep Andrew close.
SADIE: He told me everything (...) None of this would've happened if you didn't decide that you wanted him.
HOLLY: If I could go back and change things, I would.
SADIE: You can't! But you know what you *can* do? You can leave. Since you pulled an Izzy, you should go be with her. Take your baby, go to England, and never come back.
Sadie walks out, and we close on Holly processing this.
