Paul comes out from the bedroom and is shocked to find Thomas in the crib. Terese turns up in the lift and is equally surprised. Paul confirms that Chelsea isn't here; he doesn't even know how long Thomas has been here. But Terese says it can't have been long, because Thomas and Chelsea were in the Waterhole together not long ago.
PAUL: Did something happen there?
TERESE: Well, Chelsea heard a few home truths...
Terese then finds a note from Chelsea in Thomas's crib.
PAUL (reading): 'Paul, he's better off with you. I know you love him. Be the father he deserves. Chelsea.'
Thomas is crying, and they both try to soothe him. Remi and Cara then turn up, looking for Chelsea, saying all of her stuff has gone from home. Paul says she's not here, but has left Thomas.
REMI: Cara mentioned she's talked about skipping town.
CARA: But not without Thomas. Why would she leave him here?
Paul passes Cara the note. She reads it with concern, and then looks annoyed.
No 24
Jane is cleaning, while Byron, Nicolette, Aaron and Sam watch her worriedly. Byron notes that Jane has cleaned the same shelf three times already.
Jane turns to them and says they should organise a reading of Amanda's will at some stage. Byron and Nicolette have already taken care of that, though; Amanda's lawyer is flying in, and the reading will be after the memorial tomorrow. Jane thanks them.
BYRON: We didn't want you to worry about a thing.
JANE: No, well, I haven't had to. Cos you two have got everything under control. And I'm very proud of both of you.
Sadie comes in from the bedrooms, having put Isla to bed. She asks Jane if she's picked an outfit for the memorial, offering to iron it for her. Jane thanks her but says that won't be necessary.
JANE: I won't be going.
Byron and Nicolette look shocked.
Penthouse
Remi, Terese and Paul listen as Cara leaves Chelsea a voicemail. Cara says she's sorry she upset Chelsea but that she can't keep running from her problems, and asks her to let her know she's okay. Terese then suggests that there's little more any of them can do tonight, and proposes they reconvene tomorrow to 'work on the next steps'.
Cara agrees, and goes to pick up Thomas, intending to take him home with her. But Paul challenges her, saying Thomas has just settled.
CARA: He's only spent two nights here in his whole life.
PAUL: Chelsea left him here. That means she wants *me* to look after him.
Cara doesn't look happy with this, but Remi suggests they leave Thomas here for now. Cara agrees, but 'just for tonight'.
CARA: You can drop him off before the memorial tomorrow.
PAUL: Okay.
Cara and Remi leave, and Paul continues to fuss over Thomas.
No 24
The next morning, Byron, Sadie, Aaron, Nicolette and Sam are all dressed in black for the memorial. Jane is still cleaning in the background, her resolve not to go to the memorial seemingly unchanged.
AARON: It's almost like she's completely shut off.
SAM: We can't leave her.
Nicolette goes into the kitchen to try and talk Jane round.
NICOLETTE: I know that you have a lot of regrets about Nanna.
JANE: No, Nicolette - let's just not.
NICOLETTE: And I get that it feels too painful to face today - I just worry you'll regret not being there.
Byron has joined them and agrees with Nic.
JANE: Look, I appreciate what you're both trying to do, but... the truth is, I barely knew my mother. She moved in next door to where I worked, crying out for attention, and I didn't even notice, so... no. I don't deserve to be there.
BYRON: You don't have to earn the right to grieve.
JANE: Look, this probably wouldn't have even happened if it wasn't for me.
AARON: Jane, that's the same reason why Paul nearly bailed on David's anniversary. But he showed up, and it turned out to be the best for him. And for all of us.
But Jane will not be persuaded.
JANE: I've made up my mind. I'm not going.
SADIE: Jane (...) I'm not gonna pressure you to go, and I didn't know Amanda that long. But I do know that she loved being the centre of attention. People making a fuss about her. And no matter what went down... I think she'd like you to come.
But Jane doesn't say anything, so everyone else reluctantly files out of the door without her.
Eirini Rising
Darcy and Karl are in the office; they're also dressed up for the ceremony. Darcy gives Karl a bottle of the natural supplements he asked him for, and Karl thanks him, saying they'll make all the difference.
KARL: A lot of people are taking Amanda's death very hard.
DARCY: Mm. Well, death is something that we need to get used to here. Unfortunately.
KARL: Mm, sure. But she's the first resident we've lost. And under concerning circumstances.
The tension between Karl and Darcy is palpable, as they each scrutinise the other carefully.
DARCY: ... You just look after yourself, Karl. If the residents need support - well, they have me.
Darcy looks smug as he leaves. Karl sighs.
No 30
Taye is with Remi and Cara for breakfast. Cara is regretting leaving Thomas at Paul's place, and suspects that Chelsea leaving Thomas there might simply be another mad scheme to win Paul back.
TAYE: Harsh, Cars.
REMI: Surely that ship has sailed by now.
CARA: Well, the way I see it, if he's not with his biological dad, he should be here with us.
Cara goes to call Paul to see where they are. While she's gone, Remi admits to Taye that while she loves Thomas, she doesn't want to see Paul and Cara resort to 'pistols at dawn' or to be 'caught in the crossfire'.
Penthouse
Leo and Krista are with Paul and Terese. Leo can't believe Chelsea has abandoned Thomas, and Krista admits she feels really awful now for having a go at her. Leo tells Krista it's not her fault.
TERESE: Yeah, you of all people have the right to give Chelsea a piece of your mind.
LEO: So does Dad. I mean, just lumping Thomas on you when you've just found out he's not yours? It's just cruel.
TERESE: Yeah, well, that's Chelsea for you.
Paul stays quiet, not wanting to admit that he already knew Thomas wasn't his son. Terese says they should head off to No 30 to drop Thomas off before the memorial, but...
PAUL: No, no. He's staying here.
TERESE: But... darling, what? Do you need some more time? We could drop him off afterwards?
PAUL: Terese, Chelsea wanted him to live here with us. So I really don't care what Cara thinks - that's what's gonna happen, okay?
Paul adds that he's not coming to the memorial - he wants to be with Thomas in case he's missing Chelsea.
The Pavilion
The memorial for Amanda is almost ready to begin. Susan is preparing to do her celebrant duties while Karl and Aaron help to set up. Darcy chats to Byron.
DARCY: Your grandmother made a big impact on me. And her absence will be felt at Eirini, even though she wasn't there long.
SADIE: I bet Vera's even gonna miss her at Mahjong.
BYRON: What, Nanna played Mahjong?
SADIE: Amanda did everything!
Sadie is carrying a framed canvas, which she refers to as Wendy's 'creation', and goes to 'set it up'. (We only see the back of it at this point.) Darcy asks Byron if there will be a wake afterwards, but he says they're just keeping it low- key - a small service then the will reading at his place.
DARCY: You're not giving yourself much time to process all this.
BYRON: I just want it done and dusted, you know, for Mum's sake.
DARCY: How's that all going? Any complications on that front?
BYRON: So far, so good. But knowing Nanna, probably.
Byron goes over to join Susan, Karl, Nicolette, Aaron and Sam. Nic says she was hoping Jane would turn up, but it seems like she's sticking to her guns. Byron suggests they should get started.
SADIE: First, you all need to see this. Mum hustled super hard for it to be done today.
Karl and Sadie pull back curtains to reveal a portrait of a younger Amanda, based on the photograph she was showing Sadie, but made out of fabric.
NICOLETTE: Wow. Is that made from Nanna's clothes? The ones that you altered?
BYRON: Sades, this is amazing. I'm gonna have to give your mum the biggest hug!
At this point, Jane turns up after all, and looks somewhat haunted when she sees the portrait. But...
JANE: It's really beautiful.
Lassiter's Complex
Terese is about to head to the memorial, and is chatting to Krista and Leo. Terese is concerned that Paul isn't coming to the memorial, as Jane is one of his best friends. But Krista points out that Paul has only just found out the truth about Thomas's paternity. Leo goes off to get coffee.
KRISTA: Look, I was a wreck after what Chelsea did to me. I'm sure that Paul will figure out the right thing to do in his own time.
TERESE: Yeah, but the longer it goes on, the harder it's gonna be for him to step back. Look, I realise that it's easier for me than it is for him. And to be honest, there's a part of me that's... relieved that Thomas isn't his son. I'll admit that. But it doesn't mean that I'm not sympathetic to the way he's feeling. You know, I care about Thomas too.
KRISTA: I know. Do you think this is gonna lead to a custody battle?
TERESE: Oh, I hope it doesn't go that far. No, I just think he's having trouble letting go. That's all it is.
Krista heads off, telling Terese to pass her regards to Jane.
The Pavilion
The memorial has begun and Byron and Nicolette are speaking, recalling an amusing anecdote about Amanda from their childhood.
BYRON: So there's no surprises - we weren't allowed to use glue in Nanna's house again.
NICOLETTE: She did keep that rug, though. And apparently she told half of Hong Kong that story.
They take their seats, and Susan takes over.
SUSAN: At times like this, it's such a comfort to be able to share stories. A lot of you were just getting to know Amanda, but based on my short time with her, I'm sure she's left you with stories that you'll be telling for years to come.
Byron and Sadie are holding hands, and Byron reaches out for Jane's hand too. Susan is about to read a concluding passage, but Jane interrupts her, saying that she'd like to say some words herself. Darcy is looking shifty among the gathered mourners.
JANE: When my mother came back to Erinsborough, I hoped it would be an opportunity for us to become closer. And I felt that she wanted that too. We had so much time to make up for. I just didn't realise how limited that time would be. The disease that my mother was battling - it robbed us of the ability to make new memories. But even so... my mother was anything but forgettable.
Jane turns to the fabric portrait of Amanda.
JANE: I'll miss you, Mum.
Darcy looks shifty again, perhaps a little emotional, and Karl watches him carefully. We then get a montage of people milling around Jane as people begin to leave, while she sits sadly in the front row, surrounded by her family. Aside from them, Darcy is the last to get up and walk away. Soon the family get up and walk off too, leaving Susan to come and sit with Jane.
SUSAN: What you said was very moving.
JANE: I must've been a terrible daughter.
SUSAN: Jane, no.
JANE: When she moved to Hong Kong, I felt so deserted. But I was only thinking about myself. No, Mum had a difficult upbringing, and I didn't give her enough understanding or consideration for that. Maybe that's the reason that she didn't tell me she'd moved back to Erinsborough, because... maybe she felt the distance between us just as much as I did. I would have welcomed her with open arms, if she'd given me the chance. You know, Sadie said something this morning. It's so true - Mum loved being the centre of attention. She... she loved that more than anything. More than wanting to have any kind of connection with me.
Jane begins to cry while Susan listens solemnly.
JANE: No, she was selfish. She made me feel like everything I did was an attack on her, and she would never, ever let it go. And then she'd... she'd hurt anyone who loved her, and just brush them off like they were... like the lint off her mink coat. And I know that she wasn't well. Especially towards the end, but... if she hadn't have been unwell, then maybe she wouldn't have run off. And I am so angry about that. And I am so angry at her.
Susan holds Jane's hand but she looks inconsolable.
The Waterhole
Terese has rejoined Paul, who is looking after Thomas in the pub. Terese is talking about the service, but Paul isn't really listening. Terese says they should get Thomas back to Remi and Cara. This time, Paul seems to agree, saying they can when he wakes up. But at this point Remi and Cara come in, which seems to snap Paul back into 'I'm keeping Thomas' mode.
CARA: What the hell, Paul? You were supposed to return him hours ago!
PAUL: (...) As I said last night, Chelsea's letter was very clear. Thomas's home is with us.
CARA: Thomas's home is with his actual family! And since you seem to be struggling with the concept, that doesn't include you.
PAUL: I am his father, alright? I'm the one that's on the birth certificate.
CARA: Falsely, if you remember.
PAUL: I am the only father that baby's ever known. So you do *not* get to play wish fulfilment with my child just because you can't have any more of your own.
TERESE: Paul!
Terese suggests neither Paul nor Cara are in the state of mind to discuss this right now, and Remi agrees, suggesting they take a breather and pick it up when everyone's calmed down. But she shakes her head at Paul disapprovingly as she leaves with Cara. Terese is left shaking her head at Paul too.
No 28
Susan, Karl and Darcy are chatting about the memorial. Darcy expresses sympathy for Jane, having to go straight from the memorial to the will reading.
DARCY: If there are any complications, it's just another problem for her.
Karl is watching Darcy carefully again, but Susan is oblivious. She asks if Darcy wants to stay for lunch. He says he'd love to, so Susan goes outside to pick some herbs for a salad. Once she's gone...
KARL: You alright, Darcy? You seem out of sorts.
DARCY: Oh, the memorial - it shook me up more than I expected... Isn't it about time for another tablet?
KARL: Oh, yes. Yes, you're quite right (...) Thanks for reminding me.
Karl produces the bottle of pills Darcy gave him earlier and pops one in his mouth. Darcy goes outside to help Susan - at which point, Karl spits the pill back out and drops it down the plughole! He looks thoughtful as he stares at the pill bottle with suspicion...
Penthouse
Krista is talking to Terese again. Krista says Terese can't force Paul to let Thomas go, and Terese agrees. Leo and Paul come in, also discussing Thomas; Leo doesn't think the 'being on the birth certificate' argument will wash for very long, as Cara and Remi know Paul isn't Thomas's real father.
PAUL: Yeah, well, let's see what a good lawyer makes of that, hey?
LEO: One DNA test and it'll be over for you, Dad. They'll tear you to shreds for this.
PAUL: Ha! Let them try and fight me.
Terese asks Krista and Leo to give her and Paul some space, so they head off.
TERESE: Okay, listen - I don't want to upset you. But Leo really does have a point. If you, or if we, want to have a future with Thomas, then we've got to be smarter about this.
PAUL: Alright, so what would you suggest?
TERESE: Well, we take Thomas over to Cara and Remi's. We let Cara think that she's getting what she wants.
PAUL: And what if she refuses to ever let us see him again, hey? We can't just give away our only advantage.
TERESE: We have to take the heat out of this! You know, if the Varga- Murphys think that we're coming to the table, then they'll be more open to letting us spend time with Thomas.
PAUL: Just... the idea of handing him over, it's just impossible. And I don't know if I can do it.
TERESE: I understand. Maybe I can do it for you, if that helps?
PAUL: No, no - you've done way too much for me recently (...) You know, I'm so lucky to have you on my side.
TERESE: And I always will be. I love you.
PAUL: I love you too.
They hug, but Terese is looking worried.
No 32
Jane, Nicolette, Aaron, Sam and Sadie are gathered on the patio. Jane is still struggling with how unresolved things were between her and Amanda when she died.
JANE: I feel as though I'm grieving the mother I wish I had, as well as who your grandmother really was.
Byron emerges from the house with Russell Jones, Amanda's solicitor who has just arrived.
RUSSELL: I'm very sorry for your loss. Amanda was a real character.
Jane thanks him, and declares that they should get the will reading over with.
No 30
Terese turns up at the door with Thomas in his carrier; Paul apparently 'saw reason' and let her bring him over, which Cara is pleased about. Meanwhile Remi's been trying to call Chelsea but it keeps going to voicemail. Cara thanks Terese, and goes to put Thomas to bed.
No 32
Russell Jones is reading Amanda's will to the assembled family.
RUSSELL (reading): 'To my brother, Joe Mangel, I leave my vintage wine collection, in the hope he might finally develop some taste.'
NICOLETTE: Bet Uncle Joe will love that!
RUSSELL: 'All my remaining assets are to be liquidated and held in trust. This will fund a scholarship programme for students pursuing careers in fashion and beauty, but suffering financial barriers.' And that concludes the reading of Mrs Amanda Harris's will.
Concerned by what he's heard, Byron takes a look at the will.
NICOLETTE: So, *all* of her assets?
RUSSELL: That's correct, yes.
NICOLETTE (laughing with disbelief): I'm sorry, Russell, uh... so, just to be clear, what you're telling us is that all of Nanna's money from her house, the Eirini apartment and whatever else she has, that's not going to my mum? Or me, or Byron, or Isla? That's... that's gonna go to a starving beautician?
Russell nods. Jane alone looks unsurprised at this!
NICOLETTE: Well, we're not gonna let that happen!
RUSSELL: Well, it's not up to you. Amanda recently updated her will. The trust will be administered by -
BYRON (reading): Miss Sadie Rodwell?
Sadie stares at him in disbelief. Nicolette can't believe it either, but Jane barely bats an eyelid! Amanda, it seems, is at the centre of attention once again...
