The Waterhole
Paul and Terese come in. Paul suggests that the fact Leo and Krista saw Melanie off together when she left for Gippsland might be a good sign for their relationship. Chelsea is sitting at a table with baby Thomas, having dinner. Paul says hello, then he and Terese go to a separate table. Terese remarks that Paul seems very forgiving of Krista.
PAUL: I'm not condoning what she did. But Sebastian was a master manipulator.
TERESE: Still. You never cease to surprise me.
It's clear Paul's attention is still on Chelsea and Thomas, and Terese looks peeved. She says he can go over and talk to them, but Paul insists he's here with Terese. At this point, Aaron rushes in and tells Paul that Leo and Krista have both been called in by the police for further questioning over Sebastian.
AARON: Now they're calling it a murder investigation.
Paul and Terese are shocked.
Erinsborough Police Station
Detective Fox is interviewing Leo. He wants to know why Leo didn't mention seeing Seb last night.
LEO: It's irrelevant.
FOX: You lied. I'd say that's... that's very relevant.
LEO: Umm... we bumped into each other, and exchanged some words, and that was it.
FOX: Yeah? Words about what?
LEO: ...
FOX: Should I talk to your wife?
We cut to a separate interview between Fox and Krista, who asks what Leo said, but Fox sensibly won't discuss that! He tells Krista it's in her interests to be truthful, and starts digging for info on whatever's happened in her personal life.
FOX: I can only presume that it involves Leo, Sebastian and... probably your sister as well.
We cut back to Leo, who tells Fox to leave Krista out of this.
FOX: Listen, you are the last known person to see the deceased moments before he drowned. Now, I'm gonna ask you one last time. What happened between you and Sebastian?
We cut back to Krista, who admits to Fox that she slept with Seb the night before the wedding, and that she told Leo about it on their honeymoon.
Back with Leo, Fox asks him if that's the real reason he came home early from the honeymoon. Leo says it was.
FOX: Did you punch Sebastian?
LEO: No (...) I asked him to leave Krista alone, and then I left him. Alive.
FOX: Right. I'm gonna request a DNA sample from you. You don't have to consent. But if you've got nothing to hide... I don't see why you wouldn't.
Leo looks shifty.
Eirini Rising
Max has come to visit Harold, and they are chatting in the recreation room. Max is telling him about Shane's plans to reopen the garage following the fire, once the insurance is sorted. In the meantime, says Max, it gives him more opportunity to hang out with Harold - and he asks how Harold's been feeling about the situation with Agnes Adair, the Madge lookalike.
HAROLD: Yes, I must admit, it was peculiar, but... well, I'll probably never see her again.
MAX: Right. It didn't make you a bit curious, though? Her resemblance to great auntie Madge? Cos, you know, Uncle Tom's actually sent a bunch of stuff down for us (...) About ten years ago, he dug through the family archives for Daniel Robinson's wedding.
HAROLD: Ah, yes, yes - I was here then. (laughs) So was Madge, in a way!
MAX: Hmm?
HAROLD: Oh, never mind!
Max produces the sheaf of documents that Uncle Tom has sent, but Harold asks what the point of it is.
MAX: The point is... what if Agnes actually is a long- lost Ramsay?
Harold looks taken aback by the suggestion!
Harold's Café
JJ comes in and is surprised to find Agnes hanging out there - she admits she enjoyed the coffee on her last visit. She's looking through brochures for retirement villages other than Eirini Rising, but admits it's slim pickings!
AGNES: But nobody's mistaken me for a dead woman, so that's a plus.
JJ offers to buy Agnes a panini as he was just going to grab one.
AGNES: Haven't you got anything better to do?
JJ: Well, I... I just feel bad about how things got weird with you two at Eirini. I'd like to make it up to you.
AGNES: It wasn't your fault. But I wouldn't mind the company - and I will try a panini, thank you. But I insist, it's my treat.
Erinsborough Police Station
Leo and Krista are now sitting in the interview room, and have been joined by Paul and Aaron. Paul wants to know what Leo and Seb were doing at the lake.
LEO: We just spoke, okay? I didn't kill him, I swear.
PAUL: Right. You are not gonna take the fall for this.
LEO: Thanks for believing me.
KRISTA: I believe you too.
But Leo is still salty with Krista, so doesn't respond to this. Aaron says they all believe Leo - and at this point, Paul's hotshot lawyer Georgia McNamara turns up. She informs Leo that as the police's key person of interest, they'll want to hold him at the station for as long as they can.
Georgia says the DNA test they've requested is standard, so they can look for anything to connect Leo to the victim. If he doesn't assent to it, the police will just get a subpoena and force him. Leo says that in which case, he may as well do it now. He looks very worried.
Lassiter's Hotel
Fallon comes into her hotel room with Taye; she tells him she's staying around for a week or so, then is going to meet her mum. They spot a red baseball cap hanging on the shelf, and she decides the cleaners must have overlooked it. Taye looks a bit shifty and takes the cap, saying he'll hand it in. Fallon thanks Taye for checking on her.
Fallon gets a message on her phone from Krista, telling her that the police think Seb was murdered and that Leo is being questioned.
TAYE: So now it's a murder investigation - and we've both lied to the police.
FALLON: I'm sorry. I didn't think it would come to this.
TAYE: Fallon, I gave you an alibi!
FALLON: We can't change our story now. It'll look suspicious.
TAYE: Alright. But you'd better hope that the cops don't look at us! Because this is really serious.
FALLON: I know.
Penthouse
Paul and Leo come in. Paul doesn't understand why Leo didn't tell him he'd seen Seb last night. Leo says Paul had enough going on with Chelsea.
PAUL: Leo, if you know more than you're letting on, you can tell me. I can help, alright? I'm not gonna judge you.
LEO (annoyed): There's nothing else.
Paul appears to accept this, but watches Leo thoughtfully as he wanders out onto the balcony. He joins him out there with two glasses of whisky, and asks how Leo is feeling about Krista.
LEO: Honestly, I, umm... I'm just trying not to feel anything at all.
Harold's Café
JJ and Agnes have just finished their paninis, and Agnes is mulling the prospect of dessert, when Harold comes in and sees her.
HAROLD: Oh dear.
AGNES: Oh, on second thoughts, I think I'd better be on my way.
But Harold greets her amiably as she gets up, and explains he and Madge used to run this café.
HAROLD: I'm sorry. It is so strange seeing you here.
Max then appears behind them, and introduces himself as Madge's great nephew to an increasingly bewildered Agnes! She says she'll leave them to it, but...
HAROLD: Oh, no, please - don't leave on my account.
AGNES: Well, it's late.
JJ: It's not that late! And you were thinking of dessert.
HAROLD (chuckles): Ah!
Agnes looks conflicted...
Penthouse
Leo is still moping on the balcony while indoors, Paul and Terese talk on the sofa. Terese thinks it's a good sign that Georgia the lawyer seemed positive, but Paul says he's been in these situations before and they can 'go south very quickly'; having a great lawyer is sometimes not enough.
PAUL: Going to jail absolutely destroyed David.
TERESE: Listen, you just focus on what you can do. Get the best advice off experts and listen to it.
Chelsea waltzes in, minus Thomas who's at home with Cara; she's heard the news about Leo and came to see if there was anything she could do to help. Paul isn't sure there is much that can be done.
CHELSEA: What if I arrange for you to spend more time with Thomas? It would give you something positive to focus on.
Terese rolls her eyes.
PAUL: Thanks, that means a lot.
He glances at Terese who forces a smile, and then tells Chelsea that they will work out a convenient time and get back to her.
Harold's Café
JJ, who appears to be in Cupid mode, hangs around at the counter with Max, and asks him how he thinks Harold and Agnes are getting along. Max thinks they're definitely drawn to each other, and we zoom out to see that Agnes and Harold are sitting about a foot away but have nonetheless not heard them!
AGNES: So, what's it like visiting a café that's named after you?
HAROLD: Ah - well, no, it takes some getting used to. Mind you, it's had many names over the years. At first it was Daphne's, and then it was just the Coffee Shop, and then (laughs) it was the Holy Roll!
Agnes finds this inordinately hilarious! When she's stopped laughing she notices Harold staring.
AGNES: Did I say something wrong?
HAROLD: No, no - just the thought of something, that's all.
Harold unveils the weighty dossier that Uncle Tom has extracted from the family archives.
HAROLD: There may be something connecting you in this. And, mind you, it wasn't my idea.
AGNES: It's like 'War and Peace'!
HAROLD: Well, it is a colourful family! I was thinking of looking through it tomorrow - now, if you're interested, feel free to, umm - what do they say? - swing by Eirini?
Agnes smiles, unsure what to say...
Lassiter's Complex
The next morning, Paul and Leo are just coming out of the hotel when Krista turns up. She suggests that she and Leo have breakfast together, but he coolly replies that Abigail is waiting for him.
KRISTA: She could come with us, maybe?
LEO: I was thinking more of a daddy- daughter day kind of thing.
Leo walks off, leaving Krista disheartened.
KRISTA: Why aren't you mad at me?
PAUL (shrugs): You made a mistake. I'm the last person to judge you.
KRISTA: It's as simple as that?
PAUL: Yeah. Because I happen to think that you're extremely good for Leo and Abi.
KRISTA: Paul, I want to do whatever it takes to make this right.
PAUL: Good, because right now Leo needs our support with the police investigation. And if he's charged -
KRISTA: I'm on his side.
No 30
Terese watches, scowling, as Paul fusses over Thomas in his crib. Paul offers Terese a chance to hold the baby, but she says she's 'fine'. She then continues to scowl as Paul engages Chelsea in a conversation we'll refrain from recounting about Thomas's pooing habits! Seemingly unable to bear the scenario any further, Terese says she has to go and make a call, but tells Paul to stay. She scowls at them again as she goes.
After enquiring with Paul about how Leo is getting on, Chelsea suggests that they could take Thomas to spend some time with Abigail. Paul agrees.
Eirini Rising
The next morning, Agnes has decided to come along to Harold's fact- finding session with Uncle Tom's dossier, and Max and JJ are also on hand to help out.
AGNES: As a retired psychiatrist, this could make for a very interesting paper on doppelgangers.
HAROLD: Oh! Well, let's dive straight in, shall we?
AGNES: I'm game if you are, Harold.
But when Agnes says these words, Harold suddenly has a flashback to Madge, saying exactly the same thing to him many years ago. Becoming flustered, he checks his watch, and awkwardly claims to have just remembered that he has an aqua aerobics class to get to. Max tries to persuade Harold to stay, but he insists the class is important for his heart, telling them to start the search and he'll join them when he gets back.
HAROLD (quietly, to Max): She just said something - it was so very Madge, but she is not Madge. And it's... it's too much.
Max goes off with Harold, leaving Agnes and JJ with the dossier.
AGNES: I knew that this was a bad idea. I'm traumatising that poor man!
She gets up to leave, saying this shouldn't be about her curiosity.
JJ: Don't you want to know if this is some random thing, or if you're actually connected?
Agnes looks conflicted.
No 30
Paul is singing the nursery rhyme 'This Old Man' to baby Thomas, while Chelsea sits next to him smiling. She starts to cry.
PAUL: I apologise for my singing!
CHELSEA: Sorry. Hormones!
PAUL: My dad used to sing that song to me and my siblings. In fact, one time Lucy was lost overnight and she sang it to herself to stay calm.
CHELSEA: I'm so grateful for how you've handled all this.
PAUL: No baby asked to be born. I mean, why should they suffer because of the mistakes their parents made?
CHELSEA: You've got vomit on you.
PAUL: What? Oh! Must've been my singing.
Chelsea cleans up the vomit from Paul's shoulder while they both fuss over Thomas. Terese comes in, sees this and scowls again (!)
Erinsborough Police Station
Detective Fox tells Leo and his lawyer Georgia that they've compared Leo's DNA to some of that 'found on the body of the deceased', and established a match. Georgia looks towards Leo, who looks shifty and says nothing.
FOX: Is there anything else you might have forgotten to tell me?
LEO: No.
FOX: You sure?
GEORGIA: You don't need to answer, Leo.
LEO: The only thing I can think of is that it might've been when Seb grabbed my collar -
GEORGIA: Leo!
FOX: So you did fight?
GEORGIA: Don't answer any more questions, Leo.
FOX: Mate, I get it. This piece of garbage sleeps with your fiancée - you were angry, things got out of control. Plead guilty. You'll be able to negotiate a good deal - maybe even manslaughter.
GEORGIA: (laughs derisively)
FOX: Fight it, and you risk life imprisonment. By the time you get out, your little girl will be in her 20s.
LEO: I didn't do it!
FOX: ... Very well. Leo Tanaka, I'm charging you with the murder of Sebastian Metcalfe.
Lassiter's Complex
We go into slow motion, as Leo walks into the courtyard where Krista, Paul, Terese, Aaron and Abigail are waiting for him. Georgia has followed, and tell them all that the police have refused to grant Leo bail, meaning he'll need to go before a magistrate.
KRISTA: He will get bail though, right?
GEORGIA: We'll do everything we can at the application to make sure he does.
Fox and a colleague appear behind Leo, indicating to him that they need to leave - so Leo kneels down to talk to Abigail.
LEO: Honey, Daddy's got to go away for a little while, okay? But I'll be back soon.
Abi looks upset, so Paul picks her up. Slow motion resumes and Leo is led away and into a police car by the cops. In addition to the aforementioned, Fallon and Taye are among those watching...
Eirini Rising
JJ and Agnes are deep into their research of the Ramsay family history, leafing through the contents of Uncle Tom's file. Agnes has found an article about 'Black' Jack Ramsay, Madge's grandfather. JJ says they learned about him in school - he was the Mayor of Erinsborough during the Depression. JJ is keeping a track of the family tree on a large whiteboard in the recreation room.
Agnes has read that Jack had a brother called Fred Ramsay, and she's also found a letter to Fred from her own great grandmother, Agnes Robinson.
AGNES: I'm named after her! Agnes married a man called Richard Adair, and they had a son called Roger Adair, who was my grandfather.
JJ: Okay - this is a pretty steamy letter between Agnes Adair and Fred Ramsay.
AGNES: Well, it seems that Agnes and Fred Ramsay were lovers, before he went off to serve in World War One. And he died in action.
JJ draws a 'lovers' line in red between Fred Ramsay and Agnes Robinson/Adair. Then, reading another letter, he hits the jackpot.
JJ: Okay, woah!
AGNES: What is it?
JJ: Agnes says that she's pregnant, and the father is Fred Ramsay.
AGNES (reading): So she conceived the baby before he left Australia, out of wedlock. The saucy minx (!)
JJ: (laughs)
AGNES: Roger Adair was born nine months later. Richard Adair brought him up as his own son. But actually, he was the biological son of Fred Ramsay.
JJ adds this information to the tree.
JJ: So, hold on - that means that... that means that you're a Ramsay! You and Madge are related.
AGNES: Yes. Her grandfather was the brother of my great grandfather. Which makes Madge my second cousin, once removed.
JJ is eager for them to tell Harold right away, but Agnes says no!
AGNES: I don't want you to tell anybody. Not until I know whether this is a good or a bad thing.
Penthouse
Abigail is playing with her toy horses while Terese watches.
ABIGAIL (sadly): When's Daddy coming home?
TERESE: Umm... he'll be home shortly, darling.
Chelsea waltzes in again and greets them both. Terese just pouts.
CHELSEA: I heard about Leo. I thought I'd check in on Paul.
TERESE (coolly): He's talking to the lawyer. No Thomas?
CHELSEA: Sorry? Oh, he's with Cara. She loves looking after him... I was there when Paul heard about David. I'm worried.
Terese hesitates, then sends Abi into another room to get her art things so they can make a card for Leo. Once she's gone...
CHELSEA: Thank you, for being so welcoming. And forgiving. And understanding about Thomas...
TERESE (raging): Okay, shut it with the Mother Teresa act! She never tried to deliberately get pregnant for money.
CHELSEA (gaping): Sorry?
TERESE: We all know you set out to trap Paul with a child! You must think you've won the lottery with Thomas!
CHELSEA: I... I can understand why you might think -
TERESE: You couldn't even lie straight in bed if you tried. So drop the act! I'm not buying it. Now get out of my sight!
Chelsea looks terrified!
