Number 28
Susan smiles at an old photo of her family in the history book, but that soon fades when Karl arrives home and announces he's just seen Izzy. Susan can't believe it when Karl explains that Izzy and Mal want to move back to Erinsborough.
KARL: She said she would convince Holly to move back too, conditional on our acceptance.
SUSAN: Right, so she's using Holly as a pawn.
KARL: Holly's nineteen, she can move back here of her own volition. But I get the feeling that Izzy and Mal being back here would be the thing to seal the deal for her. It would be great to have Holly back here with us wouldn't it?
SUSAN: (frustrated) Isabelle is manipulating you. It's emotional blackmail, can't you see that?
KARL: I suppose so.
SUSAN: You suppose so? Does Mal know about this?
KARL: He wasn't there.
SUSAN: Right, so once again she's running around behind his back. Butter wouldn't melt when he's there, but as soon as she's alone with one of us, out come the grenades!
Lassiters Complex
Clive has filled Shane in on his troubles with Jane. Shane asks if Danielle is out of Clive's life now, but Clive says it's difficult as she's a major donor to the hospital. Shane points out that if Danielle's around she's still a wildcard for Jane, but Clive knows he needs to sort things out. "Are you that worried about your career?" Shane asks, to which Clive shakes his head. "I'm realising that my career isn't as important as Jane," he replies.
Leo walks Abigail in her pram outside the hotel and chats with Paul about the hotel deal with Shane. Paul's thinking about taking him up on the offer, and Lucy's flying in to oversee things. Leo hopes whatever happens it goes well for his dad. Paul then spies Shane and asks if he's got time for a chat before Lucy arrives. "Sure, I'll let you know when I'm free," Shane says, offering a quick smile. Paul then gets a call from one of his staff - there's been a noise complaint in the hotel he needs to deal with.
Lassiters Hotel
Music is blaring from one of the rooms, accompanied by laughter and vague attempts at shushing. Paul knocks on the door and gruffly announces that he's the manager and they need to keep the noise down. He's stunned when the door opens to reveal Izzy wearing a bed sheet wrapped around her. "Izzy? What the hell are you doing here?" Paul asks, looking slightly bemused when Mal suddenly appears in a bathrobe behind her.
Ramsay Street
Levi and Freya get back from Echuca, pleased to discover that Kiri and Nicolette have become a couple while they've been away. Freya says her trip home was great because she made up with her parents - and she's also decided to become a paramedic. "Wow, you really packed a lot into your trip!" Nic exclaims. Freya jokes that the only weird thing was that the more her parents got to know Levi, the more they liked him.
The Waterhole
Glen is still upset about Terese helping out Paul, but she swears it wasn't just about him. She was also happy to feel useful again. So Glen thinks they should find Terese a new business she could sink her teeth into. "You're right, it's time," Terese agrees, then asks if they could just move on from the Paul thing. Shane then walks into the bar speaking on his phone with someone. He tells them that this afternoon works for him, as long as it's low-key.
Number 28
Levi and Freya look at the pages of the history book scattered about the lounge room (in attempt to dry them off). Mal arrives after receiving a message from his mum, so Susan asks Levi and Freya if she could speak with Mal alone. Once they've gone, Susan says that Mal needs to know what Izzy's up to.
SUSAN: She's using Holly to blackmail me and your dad into agreeing to you two moving back to Erinsborough.
MALCOLM: No she isn't.
SUSAN: Yes she is. Ask your father.
MALCOLM: I don't need to ask dad because Izzy told me what she said. It's true, we want to move back and Holly will come with us if we do.
SUSAN: What about Susannah?
MALCOLM: She'll stay with Catherine. But I plan to go back regularly and fly her over here for holidays.
SUSAN: (shaking her head in disbelief) Malcolm you have got to realise that what Isabelle presented to your dad was nothing but emotional blackmail.
MALCOLM: Mum it wasn't her intention. I wanted to tell you myself but she felt it was a conversation she should have with dad.
SUSAN: You're saying that so casually, Mal. You're missing the manipulation.
MALCOLM: Mum I get you're still struggling, so anything Izzy says you're going to read more into it.
SUSAN: (at a loss for words) Mal! Mal, I am not being paranoid!
MALCOLM: You're carrying a lot of anger, which is fair enough. But at some point you're going to have to let it go. I'm not saying this to be horrible, mum, I get it. I love you. But you're going to have to give her the benefit of the doubt.
Number 32 Backyard
Clive informs Jane that Danielle is leaving town, so surely that means good news for them. But Jane isn't so sure, wondering why the woman he strung along for years just suddenly decided to up and leave. "She's going because she knows that nothing will ever happen," Clive explains. "I made that clear." Jane points out that Clive only went through with it because she found out, and wonders how long it would have gone on for otherwise.
CLIVE: Jane, please, I'm trying.
JANE: You admitted that you liked the attention from her. We can't just glaze over that.
CLIVE: I'm not. I'm asking myself tough questions about why I behaved the way I did.
Byron, who has been swimming laps, barges over and glares at Clive.
BYRON: You need to leave.
CLIVE: This is a private conversation.
BYRON: Yeah and clearly mum doesn't want to have it.
CLIVE: I don't think you take the high moral ground here.
JANE: (warning) Please.
BYRON: What does that mean?
CLIVE: Your side hustle can't be giving her much comfort.
JANE: Clive! Please just leave, we'll talk later.
Respecting her wishes, Clive goes. Byron says he's sorry Jane had to deal with all of that but Jane can't help admitting Clive's right about one thing.
JANE: I can't keep debating this, Byron. You are either Harvey J or you're a lawyer with some self-respect and respect for me. You can't be both.
BYRON: Well I disagree.
JANE: Would Toadie?
BYRON: Fine. Fine, mum, you want me to choose? I will: I choose escorting.
Lassiters Park
Shane speaks with someone lurking in the trees, who turns out to be Tim Collins. Shane wonders why Tim can't just email him the information he found, but Tim shows him a document folder and says he's old school. Shane wonders exactly how much intel he has on Paul.
TIM: We go a fair way back. Not quite as far as you though.
SHANE: And this is everything I should be worried about?
TIM: He's got five ex-wives, four of which are still alive, and I believe you dated the one that died, didn't you? Terry? Anyway, the statements, they're all in there. Lyn Scully is a very fruity read. And she's happy to be called by phone if you want more detail. And, uh, full disclosure: Paul was once engaged to my daughter. But none of this is subjective research, it is all fact.
SHANE: What about his business dealings?
TIM: (passing him paperwork) Details a sweat shop he owned in Brazil.
SHANE: You're kidding?
TIM: (handing him another document) This one covers the time he burned down the complex. (And another) All the people who tried to sue Paul Robinson. (And the last bit of paperwork) Verified evidence that he tried to pay a woman one million dollars to hand over her baby. That one's my personal favourite.
Looking perturbed, Shane takes his documents and leaves.
Number 32 Backyard
Nicolette practically swoons home and happily tells Jane that she and Kiri are together. Jane says she's very happy for them, but the wobble in her voice reveals otherwise. "Aww mum," Nicolette sympathises. "Is it Clive or Harvey J?" Jane says it's both, and the more she delves into Clive's betrayal the more confused she gets. Byron walks onto the patio, finishing up a phone call with Toadie where it sounds as though he's resigned from his job. Wanting to avoid that conversation, Jane quickly ducks inside to see if the boys need a hand with Isla. Byron sits down next to Nicolette.
NICOLETTE: I guess mum and Harvey J aren't friends yet.
BYRON: She pretty much told me I have to choose between my jobs or I can't be her son. So I rang Toadie and I quit.
NICOLETTE: Byron you know that's not how she wanted things to go.
BYRON: Yeah I know that, Nic, but it's done.
Number 28
Freya and Levi tell Susan about the brainwave they had - they want to remake the history book by putting a call out on Facebook to anyone who has ever lived on Ramsay Street. Susan thinks it's a brilliant idea and encourages them to get started ASAP. They head back to Levi's room just as Karl walks in after making a phone call to Holly. He tells Susan that Holly initially found the idea of Mal and her mum hard to take, but when she saw them together she believed they were genuine.
KARL: And she confirmed she'd only come here if Mal and Izzy did.
SUSAN: Malcolm just can't see that Isabelle's got some sort of agenda.
KARL: Well Holly did say that Izzy really did help Malcolm with the break up.
SUSAN: (withering) I bet she did. Sure she had him flat on his back in no time.
KARL: Oh, Susan!
SUSAN: All right, I'm sorry. But come on, it's classic Isabelle. It's like the time she wanted you to father another baby for her. She manages to spin everything so I always end up bad cop.
KARL: No it's not just on you.
SUSAN: Well I don't want Isabelle Hoyland living in the same town as us with our son. Even if that means that Holly has to stay where she is.
The Waterhole
Terese finds Kiri and Glen, letting Kiri know she just bumped into Nicolette and heard the good news. Glen then asks what it was like being back at River Bend. He and Terese are surprised to learn that the place is already back on the market. Terese supposes you don't really know how much work you have to put into a place until you get your hands dirty. And Glen looks thoughtful at the news of River Bend being up for sale.
Harold's Café
Izzy and Mal are buying dessert when Paul strolls in to stir the pot. He tells them it's nice to see they've surfaced, but he barely recognised Izzy with clothes on.
MALCOLM: Just picking up some dessert for later on.
IZZY: With extra whipped cream, Paul. You jealous?
PAUL: Izzy I don't know what type of fresh hell you're trying to inflict on Karl and Susan, but this - oh boy, this one really takes the cake. Whipped cream or no whipped cream.
MALCOLM: Mum and dad know exactly what's going on.
With a smug grin, Izzy takes her dessert and leaves, Mal not far behind. Karl walks in from the other doorway and sighs when he sees Mal and Izzy exit.
PAUL: (smirking) Karl, I just had the most interesting conversation with your future daughter-in-law, Izzy!
KARL: I would have thought you'd be the last person to stick the knife in, Paul. Don't you remember how you felt when you found out about Leo and Terese being together?
PAUL: Not exactly the same thing. (Relenting off Karl's look) Yeah, you're right, I'm sorry mate. Karl what are they doing?
KARL: They want to move back here with Holly. Permanently!
PAUL: And you're sure this is not just an Izzy being Izzy thing?
KARL: They seem genuine. Malcolm certainly seems to think it's real. It's taken years for Susan and I to move past what I did and every time we do, Izzy turns up with a new agenda.
PAUL: What if there is no agenda this time? Even if there is, you and I both know Izzy. Once she sets her mind to something, that's it. Nothing's going to stop her.
KARL: Is this supposed to be a pep talk?!
PAUL: My point is maybe you should start focusing on the positives. You're going to have Mal and Holly back in your lives. And you have to decide whether that's more important than wasting energy worrying about Izzy.
The Waterhole
Paul bumps into Tim Collins and exchanges unpleasantaries with him. Tim gloats that he's celebrating because he's never had a more satisfying meeting with a client in all his career. "I'm sure they won't be celebrating when they find out how you operate," Paul retorts, but nothing can crush Tim's glee.
At the other end of the bar, Terese is startled when Glen suddenly says they should buy River Bend. Glen thinks it would be perfect for her to have a business of her own. Terese points out all the work she'd have to put into the place, but Glen says she's never backed away from hard work before. He encourages her to have a proper think about it - she could hire him to work there, and Chloe and Kiri if they're up for it.
Lassiters Complex
Byron finds his mum and only half-jokingly asks if she's going to disown him. "You are my son and I will always love you," Jane replies. "But I really can't get my head around what it is you are doing, and I can't say that I ever will." She doesn't understand why he'd just throw away his law career, but Byron says he enjoys escorting more. They see Clive across the complex and Byron asks if she wants him to step in. "No, I can't put this off," Jane says. Byron gives them some space and Clive walks over, asking if she's ready to talk now. Jane invites him to sit down.
JANE: I know that you are sorry for what you did and I appreciate your honesty, and I also know that you're trying to work on yourself.
CLIVE: I swear I am.
JANE: Well I need you to do that first before I can even consider getting over this. You need to figure out why you were prepared to take such risks. I think it gets back to your decision to become involved with Danielle in the first place.
CLIVE: That's fair. I guess I never really resolved that in my own mind.
JANE: I really think that you need to because frankly, it speaks of character and integrity, which is what attracted me to you in the first place. I'm not saying that I'm perfect but the trust between us has been broken and unless we can get that back there really is nothing left for us but-
CLIVE: Are you saying we're over?
JANE: I need you to figure out who you are and what you want, and I need to do the same. And then if we come together again at some point in the future that is one thing. But for now, yes, we're over.
Lassiters Hotel Penthouse
Paul thought he and Shane could play a few rounds of cards for old time's sake, to make old Blackjack Ramsay proud. "History says you're going to be in for a world of pain my friend," Shane retorts. Leo pipes up to ask what the history is with the cards.
PAUL: Jack Ramsay was Shane's great-grandfather who knew my great-grandfather, Samuel, who was unfortunately a bit of a gambler.
SHANE: Jack was mayor of Erinsborough and they had a bit of a bet over a blackjack game. The winner got to name the street where Samuel lived after themselves.
LEO: So that's how Ramsay Street got its name.
PAUL: Exactly, except poor old Samuel didn't have a chance with a cheat like Jack.
SHANE: Why don't you get me a drink, loser Robinson?
Shane wanders over to place his jacket on the couch and notices a framed photo of Kate, Harry and Sophie on the shelf.
SHANE: Is that Jill Ramsay's kids?
PAUL: Yeah!
SHANE: No matter how much I think about it, it makes no sense that my dad and your mum had an affair.
PAUL: I know, it is hard to believe. Bit like when I found out about David and Leo. (Off Shane's inquisitive look) That's another story.
Paul brings some drinks over and says today isn't about the past, it's about the future. He's done a bit of digging and he's discovered that Shane's reputation is spotless.
PAUL: We could nut out the details while we play, but I have decided to take you up on your offer.
Number 28
Susan, Karl and Freya look at photos on the laptop while Levi makes coffee. One photo is of Karl, Susan and Rachel out the front of #28, and then one of Bridget, Rachel, Ringo and Declan at their school dance. "Rachel sang, it was just beautiful," Susan smiles. Freya says she and Levi are going to wait until they've gathered everything together before they tell Harold. "That's very wise," Susan replies. "Don't worry, we'll make sure Billy and Libby are all over it too."
Levi and Freya head back to Levi's room, giving Karl a chance to bring up something on his mind. He says he's been thinking about the bigger picture, and that involves keeping Malcolm onside.
KARL: Would you agree that having Malcolm and Holly here far outweighs our reservations about Izzy?
SUSAN: (gobsmacked) She's done it again hasn't she!
KARL: No.
SUSAN: You're going to give into her the way you always do.
KARL: I'm just trying to look at a difficult situation in a different way.
SUSAN: It's not difficult, Karl, it's impossible! If I say no, I'm the person who's responsible for making our family unhappy. If I say yes, then Isabelle gets her way yet again. She took my husband. She's taken my son. When does it stop? I am not going to do this again. I want Isabelle out of our life.
Lassiters Hotel Penthouse
Paul tells Shane that he'd still be the majority shareholder but he'd be open to any input. He also thinks Shane could take over The Waterhole. Shane isn't very forthcoming in his responses, so Paul asks if there's any ideas he'd like to bounce around.
SHANE: Nope. But I do have a couple of questions.
PAUL: Okay, fire away.
SHANE: I did a bit of a background check on you, just as you did on me.
PAUL: I've got nothing to hide.
SHANE: Terese told me what you did to her over the fashion week. I want to hear your side of it.
PAUL: Shane we were going through an incredibly messy separation at the time. Come on, you know what divorce is like.
SHANE: Is there any truth to the story that you paid someone a million bucks to give up their baby?
PAUL: I don't know where you got your information, but whoever told you they have got absolutely no idea of the facts.
SHANE: Well the facts are is that you can't afford to keep this hotel without me. So I want to make you a counter-offer.
PAUL: All right, let's hear it.
SHANE: Let's play one more hand of cards. If you win, the deal stands.
PAUL: And if you win?
SHANE: I won't be your partner anymore. You let me buy you out of the entire hotel.
The Waterhole
