- Rose kissing Toadie!
Harold's café (rear exterior)
After finally ending the kiss, Toadie is very apologetic to Rose whereas she thinks it was simply natural and that both of them wanted to kiss. They then lean in to kiss again but Toadie stops and announces that he is heading to the hospital.
Number 22
Terese thought she'd show off her culinary skills and make lunch for the family and Jesse, but thankfully had ordered takeaway in case disaster struck...which it did. She thought she'd be able to cover it up, but Harlow brings the takeaway in with her when she comes home for lunch (Paul and David are there too).
HARLOW: So you thought you could pass Lanzini's off as your own?
TERESE: Okay... well it's worked before!
Jesse likes how Terese covered herself and she jokes that if he sticks with her, she'll teach him "everything I know!"
Hospital
From his body language, Toadie already has 'guilty' written all over his forehead as he arrives in Melanie's room. while he was away, she has enjoyed spending the time with Mackenzie reading some book and wants to continue reading it now with him. Toadie sends Mackenzie out of the room so he can speak privately.
MELANIE: Is everything okay?
TOADIE: There's something I got to tell you.
Harold's café
Karl is so determined to win money from the film festival (subject to Rose's approval) that he plans on giving away the rights to his music to anyone that wants to use it... hoping that they win and thus he gets a share of the prize money! Conveniently, Rose appears in the café and after hearing his plan, doesn't object to it.
Given her good mood, Rose then teases them about a potential change in fortune for herself [referring to what happened with Toadie but doesn't tell them that] and promises to say what if it comes off.
Lassiters hotel foyer
Chloe greets Paul and Terese as they arrive back at work to alert them to a problem with the staff - they aren't happy with Harlow's appointment and are causing trouble. Paul thinks Chloe is referring to herself when she said 'staff' but she explains that it is actually the whole staff who are gathered in the staff room, debating whether to put in a formal complaint or not! Terese, unlike Paul, can see why the staff are annoyed. Chloe doesn't look too pleased to be told she's to sort it out because he (and Terese) have a conference call to make that can't wait.
PAUL: Can you handle the responsibility or not?
CHLOE: I can handle it.
PAUL: Good, see that you do!
Hospital
Offscreen, Toadie has told Melanie about the kiss. "It shouldn't have happened," we hear Toadie say and he clarifies that yes, it was her who kissed him, but he "didn't exactly stop it." Melanie is annoyed her intuition that Rose liked him has now come true, so asks how he felt on kissing her? "It was a shock," he replies with but adds that it also "took me completely by surprise." Melanie is more concerned about his feelings afterwards - did he like it or not?
TOADIE: Honestly, I don't know how I feel. I know that's not what you want to hear but I don't want to say something just to make you feel better and then realise later on...
MELANIE: That you don't mean it?
"I'm confused Mel," he admits, plus the look on his face backs that up. Toadie he then leaves her room uttering a final "sorry" which is when Melanie then starts to cry.
Lassiters Complex
After exiting Harold's, Chloe doesn't look too impressed at how 'cosy' Harlow and Rose are sitting outside The Brasserie - the pair are repairing professional relationships, over what happened at the Flamingo Bar, now it has all been resolved amicably by both parties.
David picks up on her annoyance and eventually gets Chloe to open up to him. While acknowledging that she does want Harlow to succeed, Chloe is fed up watching her get "all the fun stuff" while feeling she is now "the odds and ends girl" having to do "menial tasks." Chloe isn't happy either at Paul wanting her to calm the rest of the staff down who are upset about Harlow's new job. David asks if there is anyone she can talk to and she does say HR but feels she can't go to them.
CHLOE: Sorry for word vomiting at you.
DAVID: Oh, I have a new born, I'm used to having vomit everywhere!
Number 30
Who do you go to when you need advice, especially when you are Toadie and of course that is Karl and Susan! He is in a quandary over his love life after what Rose disclosed to him. Toad admits he cares "deeply" for Melanie and when things are going well, "they're great," but feels lately "things are just getting in the way all the time." The K's agree that things haven't been a "smooth sailing" and that Melanie has put him through "a lot" despite the patience shown. They ask what he feels for Rose and Toadie admits part of him has "always wondered what could have been" and acknowledges too "there is still some chemistry there."
TOADIE: What do I do?
Karl's feeling is they're "too involved" and probably the wrong people to ask. Toadie interprets that as them thinking Melanie isn't a good fit for him. Susan concedes that she does have doubts but then adds that she does "feel for Mel" as she thinks Melanie "has been through a lot" plus "Rose has hardly been honest" either by returning to Erinsborough and taking the job "so that she can win you."
KARL: The important thing to remember is that you kissed Rose back. And maybe that's because you've got feelings for Rose or maybe its because things with Melanie aren't right. But you need to be honest with yourself about why it happened in the first place.
Hospital
After hearing about the kiss offscreen, Mackenzie offers Melanie her apology and that she "doesn't deserve this" either. She then has to convince Melanie that what happened isn't karma for her affairs either. "What do you do now?" Mackenzie then asks and Melanie's honest reply is that she "doesn't know" but is "still committed to Toadie" even if she doesn't know "if he feels the same way about me."
MELANIE: I suppose only time will tell.
Lassiters reception
Terese is keeping to her word of teaching Jesse "everything I know" by going over something again on the computer with him.
At the other side of the reception, Paul looks on unamused at how closely the pair are working. His observing is interrupted by Harlow asking him for advice - Rebecca the housekeeper is not following her directions. Paul's advice is for Harlow to show Rebecca who is boss and has his permission to talk to her, doing "what you think is best."
Paul then comments to Harlow about how much time Jesse and Terese are spending with one another. She thinks its "a good thing," as despite his initial fears over how the pair would get on (because of Josh) they're actually getting on very well together.
Harlow departs just as Paul receives an email - its from Metwealth Bank reminding him his first loan repayment of $10,206 is due to be paid today!
(Later)
Chloe has taken David's advice and is meeting with Prafulla from HR. Although acknowledging that some staff may accuse her of being hypocritical given how she got her job, Chloe is uncomfortable at fulfilling Paul's request of calming the staff down, when she feels the same concerns as they do. Prafulla is pleased she approached him and reveals other staff have put in official complaints about Harlow's appointment. Chloe is quick to say she isn't making an official complaint, merely seeking his opinion on how she handles things. He thinks she's been placed "in a really difficult situation" and wants to help, so asks her to talk about the changes from her perspective. Of course just as Chloe starts talking, Harlow comes into the reception (unseen by them) and hears the beginning of their conversation before heading towards the lift.
The Waterhole
Rose sends a message [presumably to Toadie, we don't see the recipient] asking to meet up and talk.
She then runs into the newly arrived Mackenzie and correctly guesses that Toadie has filled her in. Mackenzie confirms this and gets in that Melanie "is devastated." When Rose says she "never meant to cause anyone pain," Mackenzie asks if that means she will "back off and let them repair their relationship?!" Rose is quick to reply that it is Toadie who decides what happens now, and if he says there is no hope, then she will completely back off... but has a feeling "that isn't the case."
ROSE: It's pretty obvious that things between him and Melanie aren't exactly working. I don't think that she is right for him.
MACKENZIE: Oh, and I suppose that you are?!!! Is your divorce even finalised?
ROSE: Toadie and I have something really special. I think that he feels it too. I just want what's best for him.
Rose manages to sidestep the newly arrived K's as she goes to leave the bar.
The K's confirm to Mackenzie that they know what is going on and she admits to finding it hard Toadie "would let something like that happen."
MACKENZIE: He's better than that.
Karl at least defend Toadie by pointing out he "feels terrible." Then after Mackenzie admits to telling Toadie how great Melanie is, talk then gets round to the confusing mixed messages he is getting.
SUSAN: We all agreed that we would step back and let Toadie figure this out for himself and I think... I think we can do better at that.
Lassiters hotel
It's getting a bit fraught at the hotel with work not being done - from maintenance not following up on requests to invoices not being sent out.
JESSE: From what I can gather, the staff have been slacking off ever since Harlow got her new job.
"Not that rubbish again," Paul mutters but Jesse hasn't finished, he also reports to the bosses the guests are picking up on how "moody" the staff are too. Paul thinks the staff are behaving "like petulant children" and is peeved Chloe hasn't sorted things out with the staff either. "There's only so much she can do," Terese says in defence of Chloe and is aghast at Paul's plan of getting Jesse to tell him all the names of the troublemakers!
Terese tactfully dismisses Jesse to allow her and Paul to discuss the issue in private. She doesn't waste any time in pointing out that the whole thing could have been avoided "if you hadn't overruled me and given Harlow that promotion!"
TERESE: This is exactly the type of fallout that I was worried about. You never listen to me!!!
Paul asks that she lets him handle it, which is the last thing she wants and wants him to also stop cutting her out of things!
The bosses then look worried when Prafulla and Chloe appear in the reception wanting a chat!
Number 30
Melanie and Toadie are barely through the front door (she wanted to see the kids) when Rose walks into the house too - because he'd not replied to her text, she thought she'd come visit the house instead! "Now's probably not a good time," Toadie subtly tries to say but Rose ignores that and comments on Melanie being out of hospital.
MELANIE: (sarcastically) I'm all better... but I can go get you a drink if you want to put me back there again!
Realising things are awkward, Rose says she should leave, but Melanie asks her to stay.
MELANIE: Help yourself to more things that don't belong to you! Apparently, that's your style!
"I never meant for any of this," Rose explains but is stopped from saying more when Melanie tells her to "not go there" and it's Toadie who diffuses the situation by telling Rose to leave, they can talk later.
Once Rose does leave, Melanie isn't amused at his parting words to her. Toadie points out that he will be seeing her since they are working together.
MELANIE: It's pretty clear that the work was just her way of getting to you.
TOADIE: I didn't plan any of this.
MELANIE: She had her sights set on you from the moment she got here! All of those extra meetings she orchestrated, the long lunches.
TOADIE: Mel I hate that I hurt you.
MELANIE: Then tell me that you're not going to work with her anymore? Go on!
Of course Toadie can't, so Melanie picks up her bag and decides to go to her own place to rest up.
Lassiters hotel foyer
Prafulla points out to the bosses that given Harlow's job was a new post, it should have been advertised to allow anyone to apply for it, especially given there is "staff with more experience who have been with Lassiters for longer." Paul is defiant, insisting that Harlow was ready "to move up" and thinks she's doing "an excellent job."
PRAFULLA: That's not really the point!
PAUL: What exactly is your point?
PRAFULLA: I think it would be in everyone's best interest if you overturned the promotion.
Paul scoffs and this and refuses "to bend to the demands of a bunch of disgruntled whingers." "Not really the best way to see your employees Paul," the HR man points out and cites the main reason for them being disgruntled - nepotism. Prafulla heads off after telling Paul (and Terese) to "follow my advice and reach out and explain the action."
PAUL: Well thank you very much Chloe!
CHLOE: I only went to Prafulla for advice. I had no idea it would escalate like that.
PAUL: Oh please! This is your way of getting at me because you're worried Harlow's new role is taking away from your job.
TERESE: Hey, don't take this out on Chloe! She is well within her rights to go to HR if she wants. And besides, Prafulla clearly thinks that the staff have a right to be angry and quite frankly SO DO I!!!
"Not that you care what I think!" she adds in a quitter tone. Paul is quick to reply that he does care, so she orders him to "make this right" by doing what Prafulla says and "standing Harlow down."
PAUL: I can't.
TERESE: You can't... or you won't?
PAUL: This is absurd! Lassiters is my company therefore I will hire whoever I want. Harlow is not going anywhere!
Lassiters hotel (next day)
As they take the lift downstairs, Harlow mentions to Paul about Chloe talking to HR yesterday. Paul knows about them chatting and remarks he "isn't happy." "Was it about me?" she asks but his reply is that its nothing for her to worry about because she's "doing a great job."
PAUL: You just keep doing what you're doing okay.
HARLOW: I plan to.
When the pair reach the ground floor, they find it unstaffed with lots of guests waiting. Chloe and Terese arrive in reception right behind them and report that having done a lap of the complex, they can't find any staff either. Terese spots Jesse and asks what is going on.
JESSE: I'm sorry, I tried to stop them but they wouldn't listen. The staff have gone on strike.
