Community Centre (exterior)
Rose wonders why her car's been vandalised; it's not even been broken into, so it couldn't have been to steal anything inside. Toadie wonders if she's got on the wrong side of anyone recently and she says she hasn't, but then remembers she turned down Melanie's offer to volunteer for the Film Festival. She says she knows about the prawns and the restraining order so she wouldn't put it past her. Toadie offers to go and talk to Melanie, but Rose would like to herself.
Ramsay Street
Paul, Terese and David are fussing over Isla. David says they managed to get her off to sleep better last night and Paul replies that he and Aaron are already good dads. Terese gets a text from Shay, who asks when the decision about their deal will be made. Paul says it will be made when it's made but Terese seems frustrated, wanting to just get it done. After Terese leaves, David asks Paul why he's so hesitant about the deal. He replies that it's a big transaction to make so he doesn't want to rush things. Besides, he's got a granddaughter to look out for now.
DAVID: That's really sweet dad, but I think you're stalling.
Number 30
Mackenzie comes home to find Melanie preparing a brunch date.
MACKENZIE: It feels nice when your partner makes you feel special, Toadie will be chuffed.
MELANIE: I can't believe you still have nice things to say to me after what happened with that drink. I wouldn't be surprised if you just wanted to throw things back at me.
MACKENZIE: What, so you did throw the drink on me on purpose?
MELANIE: No, it was totally an accident. I'm just saying that I get why you might think otherwise, I do have form.
They call a truce before Rose barges in all guns blazing. When Melanie asks what's going on, Toadie says they found Rose's windscreen vandalised.
MELANIE: And you think I did it?
ROSE: I know you did. Just because I politely declined your volunteering request, does not mean you have the right to come after me.
MELANIE: You are rude and condescending, no wonder someone smashed your window. Get out!
Rose leaves and Melanie says she's disappointed Toadie didn't stick up for her.
TOADIE: I want to Mel, I'm just not entirely sure that Rose is wrong.
Melanie looks hurt.
The Waterhole
Terese asks Chloe if she's seen Harlow. She hasn't and she asks if it's anything she can help with. Terese says it's a Quill thing so best to speak to Harlow, however Chloe says that Harlow still needs a lot of guidance if yesterday was anything to go by. Terese sticks up for Harlow, saying she's still learning. Talk of the devil, Harlow and Jesse walk in. Harlow asks about the Quill deal.
HARLOW: We just wanted to double-check again whether grandad has made his final decision?
Terese says he hasn't, but mid conversation she gets a text from him and assumes it's about the deal. She goes off to meet him.
Terese's Office
PAUL: This doesn't stack up, so my answer is no. The figures don't lie darling, and that's why I needed the time to go over them.
TERESE: I had an exemplary auditor go through the Quill books. There was nothing that rang alarm bells.
PAUL: Well, maybe you should have hired a forensic accountant. Look, I got John Wong to look into it. And he did uncover some debts.
TERESE: Like what?
PAUL: Well, primarily an investment in Singapore that went bust.
Paul apologises as he knows Terese is disappointed, but he doesn't want the Quills in their lives given how much hurt they've caused Terese in the past.
TERESE: No, don't be silly, it's not your fault. I'm just glad you were so thorough.
Number 28
Karl, Susan and Kyle are sitting at the dining table in Number 28.
KYLE: I struggled with this for two hours last night, Karl. How do you do the tram's books in ten minutes?
SUSAN: Counting money is Karl's favourite hobby.
Karl talks about the software he uses as Toadie arrives. He tells them what happened to Rose's car and how he thinks Melanie might be involved. Karl and Kyle don't think she could be the culprit; despite everything she's done, she's never damaged anyone's property. Susan asks why he's so sure it was Mel, and he says that Rose turned her down for some volunteering at the festival and she might feel threatened.
TOADIE: Rose doesn't deserve to have my girlfriend's insecurities thrown at her.
SUSAN: No, what are you gonna do?
TOADIE: I don't know.
Lassiters Park
Melanie tells Mackenzie that Toadie thinks she's responsible for vandalising Rose's car. She can understand why he thinks that given she's got form. But, while she might be petty, childish and territorial, she's not violent. And the fact Toadie thinks she could be is what hurts. Mackenzie is sure that Rose and Toadie will realise it's not her given time, just like Mackenzie did about the drink Melanie spilled on her. Melanie says she understands that Rose must be going through a hard time at the moment given her divorce - Mackenzie says her near split from James was ages ago, but Melanie says they've split again recently. And considering this, why isn't James the prime suspect?
MELANIE: Isn't it the kind of thing an ex would do? I think it's easier to accuse someone you barely know than lay blame in your own back yard...I'm a scapegoat.
Lassiters Hotel Room
Jesse gets some champagne ready as Harlow arrives. He looks excited.
JESSE: The Quills and the Robinsons are about to do a non-dodgy deal together. I hope you know this is all because of you!
HARLOW: I didn't think I'd be into it but this is the coolest thing I've ever been a part of.
Terese knocks at the door and Jesse lets her in. She looks awkward.
TERESE: I didn't want to tell you over text. In fact, I didn't want to have to tell you at all...the deal's not happening, we're not going to invest in the hotel.
JESSE: Why not?
TERESE: Look, the details aren't important, we just realised that the risks were too high. Look, I really wanted this to happen. Especially because it was going to give you a fresh start. But, I still want you to have one.
JESSE: Yeah, me too.
TERESE: Perhaps you could get a clean slate here at Lassiters. Work between here and the Flamingo Bar again.
JESSE: That sounds like a good plan B.
HARLOW: What about me? Now the deal's not happening, will I go back to housekeeping?
Terese looks unsure.
The Waterhole
Paul is schmoozing Rose as Harlow walks in. He goes over to chat to her, but she seems disappointed about the Quill deal, not wanting to go back to doing 'grunt' work. He says that if the film festival has taught him anything, it's that Lassiters is missing something in the team; an Executive Liaison.
PAUL: Somebody to administer and run the new events that Lassiters will bring in.
HARLOW: Isn't that what Chloe does?
PAUL: Harlow, you need a challenge right now. So how about forgetting what Chloe thinks, and just say yes?
Number 30
Toadie asks Kyle if he's ever had a girlfriend that does really bad things.
KYLE: Not on Melanie's level.
TOADIE:...I'm so conflicted.
KYLE: You're just like Dr Zelda. She's off this show Secret Mercy, it's set in a hospital. I don't watch it but gran's always got it on in the background. Anyway, there's this dodgy dude, Dr Hawthorne, who Zelda's not with anymore, but she's always had a soft spot for him, even when he's doing the wrong thing.
TOADIE: You're telling me this because?
KYLE: Well it's you and Melanie. You like her but she keeps making dumb choices and now you're stuck in this stuff up/make up cycle and you don't know whether to keep trying or just give up. That's why you're so confused.
TOADIE: That is freakishly accurate.
KYLE: I know!
Mackenzie walks in, saying she doesn't think Melanie is the one who vandalised Rose's car. They ask why she's so sure, and she says that whenever Melanie does the wrong thing, she always admits to it. She didn't try and lie about her past when confronted with it. Toadie agrees with her and realises that he's been wrongly accusing Melanie.
KYLE: So what are you gonna do?
Toadie looks conflicted.
Lassiters Hotel Room
Jesse and Harlow are sitting together on a bed.
HARLOW: I've never heard of an Executive Liaison.
JESSE: It sounds like an Event Manager wrapped up in a prettier bow.
HARLOW: Or grandad invented it to cheer me up.
JESSE: Did it work?
HARLOW: I just don't want a job because of who I am.
Jesse tells her that it's not a bad thing if who she is did help her, but that she's more than proved herself in the meantime.
JESSE: You saw the opportunity with the Quill group. You pitched it and you put together a proposal to back it up. That's smart.
HARLOW: Yeah, you're right, I have proven myself...I'm gonna go and tell grandad that I'll take the job.
JESSE: You're a boss Harlow, don't fight it.
Harlow smiles.
The Waterhole
Toadie finds Rose drinking a glass of red wine.
TOADIE: That kind of day, hey?
ROSE: (laughs) Yep.
TOADIE: You know, it's ok to be spooked.
ROSE: It's just a car, I don't know why I'm so emotional about it!
TOADIE: I think you're downplaying just how full-on getting a divorce is.
Toadie offers help paying for the car given how financially tricky divorces can be. Rose is touched by his generosity and hugs him, just as Melanie walks in. She tells Rose and Toadie that she's just had to give a statement at the police station. There's no love lost with Rose who says that she's the victim in this situation.
MELANIE: So am I. I'm innocent. And I should really thank you for going to the cops because now they're investigating, they'll be able to clear my name.
ROSE: Yeah, right.
MELANIE: I had to think about why you went after me the way you did and the only thing that makes sense is that you're setting me up.
ROSE: Why would I do that?
MELANIE: Because you want to get back with Toadie. You want me out of the way so you can have another shot with him.
ROSE: You have a lot of nerve, accusing me of ruining my own car so that I can get close to Toadie.
MELANIE: As much as you do, for deciding that I'm a vandal because you didn't give me a volunteering gig?!
ROSE: You are deranged.
TOADIE: OK, that's enough!
MELANIE: Whatever!
Melanie storms out. Toadie runs after her.
Lassiters Complex
Toadie apologises to Melanie, saying he did think she was involved at first, but Mackenzie soon set him straight.
MELANIE: I had to go to the police station and give a statement. And the cops looked at me as if I had crazy eyes!
TOADIE: I should've been there for you.
MELANIE: You should've closed her down when she accused me.
TOADIE: You do have a dodgy past like you said and we can't ignore that...but doubling down and accusing Rose of setting you up, that doesn't help either.
MELANIE: Why can she accuse me and I can't do the same to her? I bet you didn't pull her up when she came after me.
Toadie points out that there's a strange tension between Melanie and Rose. Mel says it's because it's clear that Rose wants him back. He replies that even if that was true, Rose was with him all morning so she couldn't have set up Melanie. The pair make up and agree to try and solve the mystery over something to eat.
Terese's Office
Paul announces Harlow's 'newly created' role of Executive Liaison to Terese and Chloe.
CHLOE: Is that a thing?
TERESE: Would you care to elaborate please?
PAUL: Harlow's going to be handling the relationships and administration associated with our external partners.
CHLOE: But that falls under the umbrella of Assistant Manager. It's basically what I do.
PAUL: It's part of what you do, yeah. Anyway, I thought you'd be relieved to have the pressure alleviated.
CHLOE: It's three quarters of my job, it's not enough work for two people.
HARLOW: Well, I plan to bring in new opportunities to increase the load of this role.
TERESE: Why wasn't I made aware of this?
Terese and Chloe continue to argue how this role created on the fly might not be appropriate or effective. Terese says that until the details have been ironed out, the role offered to Harlow can't be confirmed. Harlow looks worried.
Number 28
Rose apologises to Karl and Susan for going on about Melanie, she only intended to come over to collect the student entries for the Film Festival. Karl and Susan don't mind though.
SUSAN: We're happy to listen, plus I think you needed a collective to make sense of all of this.
KARL: How blatant was her accusation you set her up? Could you have misinterpreted?
ROSE: She said I want her gone so I can have Toadie.
KARL: She's very protective of Toadie.
ROSE: She's insecure, which is why I thought she wrecked my car, but she maintains she didn't do it...Maybe I'm wrong?
KARL: Well, it's with the police now. Hopefully they get to the bottom of it.
Rose says she's heard things have often been quite turbulent between Toadie and Mel. Karl doesn't hold back, saying they've nearly broken up a number of times and he thinks they're better off apart. Susan thinks it's none of their business and they need to just support Toadie, whatever he decides.
Harold's Café
Harlow and Chloe walk into the Café.
HARLOW: Just admit it Chloe, you're jealous.
CHLOE: I know I've got issues Harlow, but jealousy's not one of them.
HARLOW: Then why are you trying to hold me back.
CHLOE: You have to admit this job is on the nose. Paul pulled it out of thin air.
HARLOW: He was inspired by the work I did.
CHLOE: He's your grandfather and he's giving you a leg up.
HARLOW: You know, if I thought that was the reason then I wouldn't take this job.
CHLOE: Is that what you told yourself when you got your original housekeeping gig? Were you even interviewed?
HARLOW: Ok, I walked into it. But it's a family business. And since then I've worked really hard - and it's been noticed.
CHLOE: Well, what do you want me to do? Just give you my job?
HARLOW: It's still there because of me. I picked up the slack when you took the time off.
CHLOE: And when I came back, you purposefully shut me out.
HARLOW: Of what?
CHLOE: Well, the Quill deal for a start. You've been gunning for everything. It's a low act.
HARLOW: You're the one who left to go work with Leo, you almost had an affair with him and nearly broke my family so do you know what Chloe, you don't get to judge me...I want this job, so I'm gonna take it whether you like it or not.
Chloe looks told.
