The Flamingo Bar
The boxes of towels are still on fire next to the overturned barbecue. Amy is panicking, but Roxy rushes back onto the scene with a water hose. However, Amy tells her it's an oil fire, so she can't put it out with water. Instead, they use the sand from the false beach to extinguish the flames. Terese and Ned turn up.
TERESE: What the hell's going on here?!
No 30
Mackenzie is complaining to Toadie that Harlow seems to be going out of her way to avoid her, despite having given her blessing to Mackenzie and Hendrix dating.
MACKENZIE: I mean, she was hurt when she thought we were going behind her back, and then she was feeling a bit on the outer. But she promised that she'd talk to me if she ever felt uncomfortable, and now she's doing the complete opposite.
TOADIE: Mm. Well, dating your best friend's ex was always gonna be fraught with danger, really, wasn't it? You and Harlow will get through it, even if you have to give her the odd push.
MACKENZIE: Terese said the same thing.
TOADIE: See? There you go. Can't argue with two of the smartest people on Ramsay Street.
MACKENZIE: I don't know why you're bringing David and Susan into this, but I like your advice!
Mackenzie heads off to find Harlow, just as Melanie comes in. Toadie offers her some hash browns for breakfast, which he's stolen from the Kennedys!
MELANIE: Brown's not gonna work for me. I'm on a white-food-only diet this week.
TOADIE: Does kitty want some cream?
MELANIE: No. I've got boiled egg whites and gefilte fish at home.
Melanie has a 'thing' she needs to get to, so encourages Toadie to spend the day with his 'buddies'.
TOADIE: I suppose I could see what Kyle's up to, yeah.
MELANIE: Kyle, Karl, Mrs Punt. The street is your oyster - go forth and slurp.
The Flamingo Bar
While Terese helps Roxy dispose of the burned towels, Amy confesses to Ned that she now thinks her 'goose is cooked' as regards her probationary period as manager. Ned reassures her, and offers to help by going to fetch some takeaway and some new towels from The Shed, which he thinks will help smooth things over with Terese.
Terese demands to know how Amy let another fire happen on her watch. Amy says it's all her fault, and Terese reminds her that Paul said she was on her last chance. Unexpectedly, Roxy steps up in Amy's defence, to claim it was her fault.
ROXY: She may have knocked over the barbecue, but I put the towels way too close. It's lucky Amy knew what to do. I was about to spray it all with water, and if we did, we would've been in a world of trouble.
TERESE: Well, at least you're both taking responsibility.
Amy and Roxy assure Terese they'll clean the mess up, and that Ned is fetching more towels; it'll be like it never happened.
Ramsay Street
Susan and Karl are coming out of No 28, Karl in his exercise gear in preparation for the Longest Workout competition.
KARL: When people hear the name Karl Kennedy, they think 'cyclist'. But I'm a well-rounded athlete. I intend to prove that today.
SUSAN: I have no doubt that you'll be the last man standing. Your outfit alone will scare the other competitors.
KARL: See, see, that is just not funny.
SUSAN: It's a little bit funny.
KARL: No, no, it's not. Is it too much to ask you respect the challenges I set myself in life?
Kyle appears, and asks if Karl is doing the Longest Workout.
KARL: No, I'm going to the opera (!)
KYLE: Oh, great. It's not like I got enough of you in the longest car ride ever (!) You know, Suse, that's the first time I've ever had road rage, and I wasn't behind the wheel.
Kyle claims he's going to 'win this for Levi', but Karl insists he has his 'eyes on the prize' and will win.
KYLE: Yeah, and I'd rather not have my eyes on your thighs. Are you seriously gonna be wearing that?
As Karl extols the benefits of his aerodynamic outfit, Toadie turns up. He's disappointed to see Kyle is in costume for the Longest Workout, as he was hoping they could hang out. Kyle suggests Toadie should sign up too.
SUSAN (to Toadie): I think you should enter. Just to stop those two from killing each other.
Toadie puts his head in his hands.
The Waterhole
Terese is telling Paul and Harlow about the fire at The Flamingo Bar. She's inclined to give Amy and Roxy - or as Paul calls them, 'Dumb and Dumber' - the benefit of the doubt, as no real damage was done and they seem to be working as a team now.
Paul gets a message from his son Leo, and excitedly tells Terese and Harlow that he's coming back to Erinsborough 'very soon' - and has bought a one-way flight. Harlow suggests Leo might be back for the birth of David's baby, and Paul goes to buy a bottle of Leo's favourite scotch to celebrate.
Mackenzie comes in. Harlow sees her and attempts to disappear off to the bathroom, but Terese stops her. She says she told Mackenzie that Harlow was here, and that it's time the two of them talked. Harlow rolls her eyes.
The Flamingo Bar
The Longest Workout competition is about to start. While Toadie, Kyle, Karl and Jesse limber up, Ned checks in with Amy, who is scared she's going to forget all her workout moves. Ned reassures her, entertaining her with a couple of his own moves, such as the 'Lawnmower', the 'Sprinkler' and the 'Gravedigger' - not to mention the 'Human Jellyfish'.
Aaron arrives to lead the competition; he's going to tag team with Amy on this. Everyone else must keep exercising non-stop unless they're on a designated break - otherwise they're out of the contest.
KARL (to Kyle): Hey, last chance to save face and pull out.
KYLE: Dream on, old man. I'm gonna wipe the floor with you.
KARL: Ah. Interestingly, I've never heard you say that to the mop at the tram.
Unseen by Toadie in the row behind, Melanie turns up, and asks Jesse to hold still so she can hide behind him!
MELANIE: If you move, my man will see me.
Jesse looks creeped out...
Roxy turns up, and Amy thanks her for defending her with Terese. Roxy says she's just returning the favour for the other day.
AMY: And thanks for helping me put out the fire. Honestly, for a second there, I thought you were gonna do a runner and let me burn!
ROXY (peeved): Right.
Aaron announces the start of the contest.
The Waterhole
Mackenzie wants to know why Harlow has been 'hiding' from her. Harlow explains that she feels as if the two people who used to need her the most - Mackenzie and Hendrix - don't anymore.
HARLOW: It's like you're both playing my role, and I don't have one.
MACKENZIE: Harlow, with respect, that is... a steaming pile of bull daggle.
HARLOW: Bull daggle?!
MACKENZIE: Don't change the subject! I need you so much, Harlow. Hendrix could never play you, even if he wasn't terrible at accents.
Harlow seems unreassured, so Mackenzie suggests they spend the rest of the day together, with no talk about Hendrix, boys or love.
MACKENZIE: Not even Love Capsule quotes. Just you and me. Are you down?
HARLOW: I'm down.
At the bar, Terese quietly talks to Paul about Harlow. Terese says it must be hard for her, seeing Mackenzie and Hendrix spend all their time together, when all Harlow has is an occasional letter from Brent.
PAUL: Which is precisely why I didn't want her having this long-distance relationship in the first place.
TERESE: Oh, here we go.
PAUL: No! Harlow is 18, for goodness' sake. She should be out having fun, not pining over some reprobate that doesn't deserve her.
Terese reminds him that it's Harlow's decision, but Paul looks unconvinced.
The Flamingo Bar
The Longest Workout competition is now being led by Amy. Jesse asks Melanie which of the men is her boyfriend, and Mel points out the 'red-hot daddy' otherwise known as Toadie.
JESSE: And why are you hiding from him?
MELANIE: I don't want him to get sick of me.
JESSE: But if you guys are dating, shouldn't you want to hang out?
MELANIE: Well, I do, and he does - but if I have learned one thing in my life, it's that a Mel morsel goes down better than a Mel meal. He literally jumped the fence to get away from me the other day. So if I overfeed him, he may run away for good!
As Amy instructs everyone to touch their toes, Mel tells Jesse she's pleased of her current vantage point vis-à-vis Toadie in any case, because...
MELANIE: How squooshy is that tooshie?!
Meanwhile, Karl is trying to psych Kyle out, and is none too pleased when Roxy turns up with a drink for Kyle to help sustain him.
KARL: You're giving him an unfair advantage. Although quelle surprise to that - I heard you two intimidated a pregnant woman to win a volleyball match.
As Toadie tells Kyle and Karl to cool it, Ned turns up and assists Amy in leading the workout.
Inside the bar, Aaron is given a drink by Roxy, while Susan reads a book at a table. Aaron asks why she isn't cheering on Karl.
SUSAN: Karl's his own cheerleader. He doesn't need any encouragement.
Amy comes in and congratulates Aaron on his aerobics regime.
AARON: It wasn't too raunchy for you, was it? I went digging into my back catalogue for that one, so...
AMY: No, no. Keep on thrusting. Everyone's loving it.
While Aaron gets back out to lead the workout, Amy tells Roxy that her mocktail concept is sending drink takings through the roof. But Roxy has gone cool on her, and Amy asks why.
AMY: I thought we were good. You just saved my butt out there before.
ROXY: Yeah. And I regret it now (...) Amy, I'm a really good person, and there's no way I'm that selfish or vengeful I'd let this place or you go up in flames. There's no way I want to be buddy-buddy with someone who thinks I'm a monster.
AMY: I'm so sorry. I so don't think that. I was just being colourful. But Roxy, I get it. Heaps of peeps have underestimated me in the past. It's really hurtful. It's kind of why I wanted to rock this event, you know - prove that I was something.
ROXY: That is one of the reasons why I wanted the job too.
AMY: I appreciate you Roxy, I really do. But - don't slap me - I see a lot of myself in you.
ROXY: Okay. Maybe we're not so oil-and-water.
AMY: More oil, fire and sand.
BOTH (at once): I'm the fire.
They laugh.
Back outside, the workout continues, and Karl and Kyle continue to snipe at one another. When Amy tells everyone to skip in circles, Toadie bumps into Melanie, and realises she's been here all along.
MELANIE: Hey there, tiger! Riaoww?
Toadie looks confused.
The Waterhole
Melanie explains to Toadie why she was trying to avoid him at the workout; she didn't want him to try and escape from her again.
MELANIE: We need some balance. I'm a lot, and you do not need that in your face 24/7. Nobody does, not even me. That's why I nap so much.
But Mel says she has a solution - they can spend less time together at work, if she drops down to a couple of days a week and finds some temp work elsewhere the rest of the time.
MELANIE: Then we've got heaps of time to do fun things like the Longest Workout.
TOADIE: We've been disqualified, though.
MELANIE (Russian accent): Not from the bedroom version.
They get up immediately, and rush out of the pub!
The Flamingo Bar
The non-bedroom version of the Longest Workout continues, with Kyle, Karl, Jesse and extras still in the race to be the last man standing. Paul, Terese, Mackenzie and Harlow are watching, and Paul suggests a four-way bet on the winner.
HARLOW: Obviously not Karl. He's a wreck.
MACKENZIE: I'm gonna go for Kyle. He's put in the hard yards. I think it should pay off.
HARLOW: I'm gonna pick Jesse. He's the fittest.
MACKENZIE: Yeah. Fit with a capital F.
HARLOW: Mm. Also could stand for 'fine'.
MACKENZIE: Or 'fwoar'.
Terese agrees that Jesse is the frontrunner, but has to explain to Paul who he is, saying he's been working at the bar for months.
HARLOW: He's as easy to get along with as he is to look at.
Paul smirks at this, clearly hatching some kind of a scheme...
Harold's Café
Jesse is on a designated break from the Workout and is getting a drink, when Paul accosts him. Jesse seems a bit nervous, and is surprised when Paul starts asking him about his interests and education.
PAUL: Criminal record?
JESSE: Don't have one of those.
PAUL: That's good. What about, are you in a relationship?
JESSE: ... Mr Robinson - sorry, Paul - I'm not seeing anyone. Umm, and you're a great guy. And I'm flattered, umm... but aren't there rules about that sort of thing?
PAUL: I'm not asking you out! No, no, I'm just... taking a personal interest in my staff.
Paul goes on to ask about Jesse's five-year career plan. Jesse says he'd like to be in a management role in five years, or approaching one.
JESSE: My plan is to climb the ladder and be exactly like you.
PAUL: Is that right?
JESSE: Totally! I mean, you're a smooth operator who's always kicking goals. I really admire that.
PAUL (flattered): Oh. Thank you, Jesse. Thanks.
Jesse heads back to the Workout, and Paul smiles to himself.
The Flamingo Bar
Only Jesse, Kyle and Karl are left in the Workout. Aaron leads from the front, as Kyle and Karl continue to bicker and psych one another out.
KYLE: Stamina is my middle name.
KARL: Your middle name is Eugene!
Kyle suddenly cries out in pain and falls to the floor; he's hurt his leg. Roxy rushes to his aid, and Amy declares there are just two contestants left - but then Karl drops out too, and tends to Kyle. This means Jesse has won the Longest Workout.
KYLE: Why did you pull out, Karl? You could've won that.
KARL: What do you mean, 'could've'? Come on - some things are more important than a bit of fleeting glory.
Terese congratulates Amy on a job well done in organising the competition - and has good news for her.
TERESE: Paul and I have agreed you've passed your probationary period.
AMY: You're making me permanent?
TERESE: Yes.
AMY: (squeals with delight)
ROXY: Congrats, boss!
AMY: Thanks. I'm ridiculously stoked (...) I like you, Roxy. And I really, really like when you're on my side. Tell me that you're gonna stay.
ROXY: I'm not going anywhere.
They both smile, and Roxy goes over to help Karl look after Kyle.
The Waterhole
Melanie, Susan and Toadie observe as Karl wraps what looks like clingfilm around Kyle's injured leg.
MELANIE: You've been in the wars, haven't you, darls? Done your hammie, cooked your face last month - I will never forget the sight of that, you looked just like Papito.
KYLE: Who's Papito?
TOADIE: One of her pigs.
MELANIE: You should watch out for signs of danger. You know, bad things come in threes.
Before Kyle has a chance to latch onto that idea again, Toadie slaps him around the head!
TOADIE: There you go. Three. We're not gonna go through that again, are we?
Kyle feels bad for wrecking Karl's chances of winning and apologises, but Karl says Jesse would've probably won anyway.
SUSAN: You are the winner in my eyes. It takes a true hero to give up a prize for a friend, and I'm so, so proud of you.
KARL: (...) Praise from my wife is worth more than any trophy I could ever win. Maybe there's a triathlon I could train for, yeah? What do you think?
SUSAN: Ugh, maybe you should have a shower first.
The Flamingo Bar
While Roxy packs away, Harlow and Mackenzie congratulate Jesse on his Workout win, and Harlow thanks him for helping her win the bet with Paul and the others. Terese and Paul observe from a distance.
PAUL: I've got a feeling we won't have to worry about Harlow much longer. I think she's about to turn a corner.
TERESE: Where did you get this feeling from?
PAUL: Oh, just call it a grandfather's intuition.
He walks off, looking smug. Terese follows, mildly suspicious.
Meanwhile, Ned is helping Roxy clear away the workout mats.
AMY: I'm so happy for you, babes. I'd kill to have a boss like me - so cool.
NED: And so modest!
AMY: And so grateful, actually. Today would not have been a success if you hadn't pushed me, or kept me sane... ish.
NED: Well, whatever I've given, it's not as much as I owe. After all the drama with the Hive, Yashvi... you actually made me smile. I had a lot of fun today. And that is exactly what I need right now.
AMY: Well... let's have some fun!
And she spontaneously leans in and kisses him on the lips...
