Lassiters Lake
Harlow sees Brent sitting on a bench in the distance. She hesitates for a moment before deciding to approach him.
HARLOW: Hi Brent...I heard you're staying at David and Aaron's? Are you ok?
BRENT: ...I've just had a really, really bad day.
HARLOW: What happened?
BRENT: I stuffed up...again.
Brent says he's pretty much back on the streets again, as Aaron and David won't want him back.
HARLOW: Look, if you need someone to talk to, I'm here.
Number 32
Paul's already telling the boys what he saw. Nic arrives home and they ask her what's going on, but she says she doesn't want to break Brent's confidence.
PAUL: You know what, you've had issues with him since he moved in, and now all of a sudden the two of you have got some secret agenda going?
NICOLETTE: Paul, you have no idea what you're talking about.
She says to trust her and leaves the room.
PAUL: What, are you gonna just let her fob you off like that? She handed a weapon to a troubled kid, who's living...in your house.
Aaron says he doesn't want to jump to conclusions but Paul replies that they should.
Lassiters Lake
BRENT: I don't get why you're being so nice to me...you know, after how I...treated you before. I was a massive tool.
HARLOW: Yeah, you were.
BRENT: I'm sorry...I shouldn't have got up in your face and said what I said. It was wrong.
HARLOW: I had no idea what you were gonna do to me. I was terrified. Do you know what that feels like?
Brent replies that he does know what that feels like. Harlow tells him that no-one should be treated like that and he seems remorseful.
BRENT: This is no excuse at all but you were really nice to me. I just thought that...maybe, you wanted something else.
He promises that nothing like that will ever happen again. Harlow looks at him silently for a moment.
HARLOW: So are you gonna let me know what's going on?...Maybe you should talk to David and Aaron.
BRENT: Yeah...yeah, maybe.
Number 22
Paul asks Terese if she can think of one good reason why Nicolette would be giving Brent a blade...but she can't.
Number 32
Jane tells Aaron and David that she's put in a request for Brent's academic record. They reply that her efforts may be futile as they don't know if Brent will be around much longer. She asks what they mean and they say that she should perhaps ask Nicolette. Brent arrives home and notices them all staring at him.
BRENT: What?
NICOLETTE: Paul saw us earlier when we were having our little chat and he told Aaron and David.
BRENT: What did you tell them?
NICOLETTE: I didn't...I promised I wouldn't.
DAVID: Do you still have it? The blade?
BRENT: (sighs) Yeah.
They all want to know why he has a weapon.
Number 22
Harlow arrives home.
HARLOW: I just had a conversation I never expected.
PAUL: Please tell me it wasn't with Hendrix.
HARLOW: No, Brent.
PAUL: You need to stay away from him.
Harlow says it's fine, but Paul says Brent was carrying a blade.
Number 32
BRENT: It made me feel safe, that's all.
AARON: Brent, I am so sorry.
DAVID: Have you seen them since?
BRENT: No. I made sure I was moving around, and I wasn't sleeping at night. A couple of guys beat me up...there was too many of them, but...when I got the razor, it made me feel safer.
They all seem compassionate with Brent given the situation. Aaron and David tell him that if he ever feels unsafe, even if it's just a feeling, he can talk to them. Brent gets the razor from his bag and hands it to Aaron.
AARON: Thank you.
Brent clearly feels awkward about the situation, but Nicolette smiles, seeming proud of his honesty.
Number 22
Paul tells Harlow that he doesn't think it's likely that they'll see Brent again, as he's certain he and Nicolette will soon be out on their ear.
Number 32
Aaron and David worry about whether Brent will get another razor again when he eventually moves out. Jane interrupts them to let them know that his academic records have come through.
JANE: He has struggled but he did very well in Textiles.
AARON: Textiles? Wow, I wouldn't have picked that.
DAVID: Neither would I.
JANE: His teacher thought it was something he could pursue at university.
Aaron and David aren't convinced that Brent would consider the idea of going back to school, but Jane says they could make it a condition of him staying. They decide to talk to him about his options and in the meantime, Jane says she'll look up some information on courses for him.
Number 32
Nicolette is pleased to walk in on Brent finally cleaning the bathroom.
NICOLETTE: Ah...I reckon even David would give this his tick of approval.
BRENT: Yeah, well it's definitely cleaner than some of the other resi bathrooms I've done. This one didn't start out nearly as gross.
NICOLETTE: So, no more complaining then?
BRENT: Well, I didn't get kicked out so....no.
Nic smiles.
Brent asks what's up with Paul. Nic replies that he doesn't like him and when he sets his mind on something he'll do anything to undermine you.
BRENT: Well, you know he doesn't like you either.
NIC: Oh yeah, and the feeling is definitely mutual.
BRENT: Yeah, well...thanks for having my back with him. I really appreciate it.
Nicolette says she can handle Paul...but suggests that they stick together when it comes to him. Brent agrees and they both look happy with this new alliance. Nic says Aaron and David want to speak to Brent about something. He wonders what and she tells him not to worry, just to hear them out, saying she'll be there too.
Lassiters Complex
Brent bumps into Harlow again on the complex. He says he's pretty much been kicked out and she asks why. She admits she knows about the razor but Brent says it's not because of that; Aaron and David have said that going back to school is a condition of him staying.
HARLOW: So they haven't kicked you out?
BRENT: Harlow, they know I won't go back. It's pretty much just an excuse so they don't look bad after they kick me out.
HARLOW: I don't think that's right.
BRENT: Look, it really doesn't matter.
Brent gets up to leave.
HARLOW: It does...you know, Aaron and David are really good guys. And if they wanted to kick you out, they would have done it when they found out about the razor. Instead they're giving you an opportunity. To live somewhere safe and...go to school. It shows that they care.
Brent still isn't convinced, thinking there's more to it.
HARLOW: All I see is an opportunity.
BRENT: To what? Fail like I did before.
HARLOW: I guess it's up to you...but what would you rather? Living on the streets, or going back to school?
Hendrix notices Brent and Harlow from afar and looks concerned.
Number 32
Paul and Terese arrive at Number 32 to see Aaron and David. Paul seems happy with himself for getting Nic and Brent into trouble, but David says it's not what he thinks.
PAUL: David, you have a good heart. But please take it from somebody with some experience. See, I wanted to give Robert the benefit of the doubt and look how that turned out.
DAVID: You're comparing Brent with Robert?
PAUL: It's valid, believe me.
Aaron explains that the blade belonged to Brent, not Nic, and he only had it because it made him feel safe when he lived on the streets.
TERESE: See, I told you not to get ahead of yourself. You just jumped in and stirred things up.
Paul seems disappointed, and David tells him that he owes Nicolette an apology.
The Waterhole (exterior)
Brent exits The Waterhole and Hendrix notices him. He tells Karl and Susan he's going to get some water so he can talk to Brent.
HENDRIX: Oi, where do you get off?
BRENT: ...Henry, right?
HENDRIX: What the hell are you doing hanging out with Harlow after what you did to her?
BRENT: Hey, chill out man. I told her I was sorry and she was cool with it.
Hendrix tells Brent to stay away from her but he replies that that would be up to Harlow.
BRENT: She's not talking to you right now, is she?
Hendrix goes silent for a moment.
BRENT: (smiles) Did she dump you?
HENDRIX: That's none of your business.
BRENT: (ecstatic) She did, didn't she?
HENDRIX: Just back off.
BRENT: Or what, huh?
Brent smiles as he leaves. Karl and Susan look concerned.
Number 22
Paul is pacing the living room and Terese tells him he's going to wear a hole in the carpet. They bicker about his attitude over Nicolette.
TERESE: You know if you ask me...when you look into a mirror, you don't like what you see. And the only way to feel better is to believe that there are other people out there who are more appalling than you.
PAUL: Is that what you honestly think of me?
TERESE: Yeah. But despite that I still love you. And I understand that you'd do anything for your family. But you need to realise by now that those boys are gonna stand by the mother of their baby. Especially if you're completely wrong about her.
Terese says Paul needs to support the boys if he hopes to have any relationship with his grandchild.
Lassiters Complex
Hendrix arrives to see Harlow.
HENDRIX: I saw you with Brent before. Why are you hanging out with him?
HARLOW: That's hardly any of your business, Hendrix.
HENDRIX: Well given what he did to you I think I have the right to be worried.
Harlow explains that Brent apologised and she wants to move on.
HENDRIX: So he says sorry and you're happy just to move on?
HARLOW: Yeah.
HENDRIX: Unbelievable...I've done some dumb things but I never treated you like he did. And I've apologised a million times. But you won't forgive me.
HARLOW: You didn't behave the same as him.
HENDRIX: Exactly, you're being a hypocrite.
HARLOW: You're being completely out of line, you don't get to tell me what to do.
Harlow tells him to save it, saying this isn't about her or Brent; it's about making himself feel better.
The Waterhole (exterior)
Jane tells Karl and Susan about her possible plans for Brent, saying they're hoping to get him enthused about the Textiles class. Susan thinks it sounds like a good idea and Jane leaves them to it. Hendrix returns, clearly in a bad mood, telling Karl and Susan that he went to see Harlow. He explains what's happened with Brent but Karl says he has to respect Harlow's decision. Karl suggests keeping his distance from Brent, but Hendrix doesn't see how that will be possible considering they live in the same street now. Susan tells Hendrix to focus on his schoolwork and counselling sessions but he's insistent on keeping an eye out in this Brent and Harlow situation, saying someone's got to look out for her.
Number 32
Paul arrives to see Nicolette. He apologises without actually saying the words, while Nic really makes him work for it. She uses the opportunity to gloat.
NIC: I guess that's as close to an apology as I'm going to get.
PAUL: So now you're going to throw it back in my face?
NIC: Why would I? I was right, instead of driving a wedge between me and the guys, they believed me, instead of listening to you.
PAUL: Well that's not gonna last.
NIC: Oh, but it is. And that ticks you off.
Terese's Office
Harlow comes to see Terese at the office. She tells her what happened with Hendrix; that he called her a hypocrite and can't see that the situation with Brent is completely different. Terese points out that the actions of people we love can hurt us far more deeply than strangers. Harlow replies that Hendrix is just so focused on his own pain that he doesn't realise how much he hurt her.
Harold's Café
Harlow enters Harold's to find Brent at the counter. She asks whether he's decided to go back to school.
BRENT: Yeah, I'm thinking about it. And of course you're right about David and Aaron too, and where they're coming from.
Harlow smiles.
BRENT: Surprisingly, they're actually cool guys. I guess I'm just not used to it as of yet.
HARLOW: Well it sounds like things are gonna work out for you.
BRENT: Yeah, well it wouldn't have happened without you (smiles)
HARLOW: Happy to help.
Hendrix walks in and Brent uses the opportunity to wind him up. He buys Harlow a muffin to say thanks for helping him. As Brent leaves, Hendrix gets up in his face and tells him to stay away from Harlow.
BRENT: It's not my fault that she keeps running to me. And besides, she's a really cool chick who lives next door so, who knows what's gonna happen?
He goes to leave before turning round to deal the final blow.
BRENT: Oh, and there's nothing you can do about it.
Hendrix looks frustrated.
