Harold's Café
Jay has to beg Hendrix for help cleaning up, reminding the teen that with everything going on between Shane and Dipi, this mess is the last thing they need right now. With a sigh, Hendrix agrees to help so long as nothing comes back on him: "I am in enough trouble with the cops." Hendrix takes note of all the broken furniture and suggests the only reasonable cover-up is to stage a break-in. Jay's on board with the idea but is worried about the security cameras in the complex. Hendrix mentions the hotel owns the cameras and is bewildered when Jay suggests that he delete the footage before his first shift in the morning.
JAY: It's only a few files, how hard can it be?
HENDRIX: It's my first day, dude. Are you serious?
JAY: It's the only way I'm getting out of this without my mum and dad finding out.
HENDRIX: Ugh... I can't believe I'm about to say yes.
JAY: Thank you! Just make sure you delete random bits so it looks like a glitch and not deliberate.
Lassiters Hotel/Number 22
The next morning Hendrix tries to use his hotel key pass to get into the office, but he can't unlock the door as he doesn't have the right access level attributed to his card.
Ned bids Roxy, Terese and Paul goodbye as he heads out to see Yashvi, but before he goes he has a laugh at Harlow wearing her Lassiters uniform. Roxy's also amused by the outfit, much to Harlow's embarrassment, but Terese and Paul think she looks great. Harlow gets a phone call from Hendrix, who is ringing to subtly double check Terese and Paul aren't on their way to work yet. Harlow asks if Hendrix wants to walk to Lassiters together, but Hendrix pretends he got to the complex early to grab a coffee before he started. Hendrix wishes Harlow luck for her first day. Harlow thanks him then tells Roxy off for taking photos of her in her uniform.
Lassiters Complex/Harold's Café
Ned and Yashvi spot Shane wearing tinsel around his neck and carrying a tub of decorations. Ned comments on his festive flair but Shane says he's just dropping things off at the Foundation for Toadie. Yashvi wonders what their family is doing for Christmas this year, but Shane falls quiet and uncomfortably says she'll have to check with Dipi. Yashvi's confused as she thought her parents were working things out and assumed since Jay was home they'd want to make this Christmas special. Shane says that it's been quite a big year, however, and thinks Yashvi shouldn't get her hopes up. When Shane leaves, Yashvi asks Ned what he made of her dad's response.
NED: It must be hard for him dealing with everything.
YASHVI: He could make a bit more effort. It's like he's gone backwards and doesn't even want to try. (Ned raises his eyebrows) What?
NED: I just can't help feeling for the guy. You think you're being a bit harsh on him?
YASHVI: No, I don't.
NED: I guess I look at it differently because I see the similarities between them and us.
YASHVI: You're still thinking about that?
NED: Well, yeah, we didn't really talk about it.
YASHVI: There's nothing to talk about. I just don't want to create an issue that's not there.
Ned doesn't appear to agree with Yashvi but doesn't say anything more. Over the other side of the complex, Jay is walking Dipi to work. Dipi thinks it's sweet but in reality Jay's main priority is to be there when Dipi finds out about the 'break-in'. Mackenzie appears and walks with them, and Dipi asks her to ensure Jay doesn't spend his whole holiday making sure his mum's okay. Mackenzie's all for the idea as she's in need of some distracting so she doesn't keep thinking about Richie. Jay's distracted himself as he waits for Dipi to enter the Café, barely registering Mackenzie suggesting a round of laser tag. Once they're inside the Café, Dipi's shocked by the mess and asks Mackenzie to run over to the police station to let them know. Dipi doesn't understand who would do such a thing and notes that nothing appears to have been taken.
JAY: You've got insurance, right? That will cover the damage.
DIPI: This is the last thing I need right before Christmas. (Getting upset) It's karma.
JAY: What?
DIPI: After everything I've done to this family, it's karma.
JAY: No, mum, you don't deserve this.
DIPI: I'm just so tired, I'm so tired of everything!
JAY: Like you said, they didn't take anything.
DIPI: The Café's a mess, Jay.
JAY: It's nothing that can't be fixed. It's a stupid, random thing. It's nobody's fault.
Dipi doesn't look like she believes him.
Lassiters Hotel Office
Hendrix has found a way in and is at the computer deleting security camera files. He hears voices out in the hallway and runs to hide behind the couch in a panic. Terese and Paul walk in with Harlow, but Harlow says she better get a wriggle on if she's going to meet her line manager. Paul can't help but wonder where Hendrix is as he supposedly got there early. He thinks he should have a chat with Hendrix's line manager, but Harlow tells her granddad he has to stop giving her boyfriend such a hard time. She heads out to start her shift just as Terese gets a phone call from Dipi. Terese is alarmed to hear about the break-in and relays the information to Paul, who says they should head over to the Café right away. Hendrix breathes a sigh of relief when they leave.
Harold's Café
Jay looks on as Dipi tells Levi that nothing has been taken from the till or the shop. Levi notes that no windows were broken and no locks were busted on the doors. Dipi mentions that she locked the place up herself last night and Levi thinks it's strange that someone picked the lock just to trash the place. He asks if she can think of anyone who would want to cause her grief, but Dipi says no. Jay chimes in and says that maybe whoever it was meant to rob the place but they got spooked before they had the chance. Levi says it's possible, but they'll know more once they check out the security footage. On cue, Jay gets a text message from Hendrix that says 'It's done', much to the teen's relief. Yashvi and Shane stop by assess the damage and tell Dipi they're sorry, but Dipi just mutters it's nothing she didn't deserve. Yashvi asks Levi if he's got everything he needs. Levi says he's swabbed for prints, taken photos and is on his way now to check out the security footage. Jay silently hopes that Hendrix has done a good job.
Lassiters Hotel
Hendrix checks that the coast is clear in the lobby before putting back the key pass he stole from the front desk. Paul finds him soon enough and wonders where he was this morning. Hendrix lies and says he got caught up on a phone call with his dad, but Paul's not in the mood for excuses. He wonders how many chances Hendrix expects to get with him. Hendrix apologises and heads out to the entryway, bumping into Harlow on the way. She asks what just happened but Hendrix says it was just "Paul being Paul" giving him a hard time as per usual. Harlow figures as long as Hendrix is doing his job then there's no reason Paul should give him a hard time. Hendrix has a quiet freak out when he sees Terese walk in with Levi on their way to the office and only snaps out of it when Paul yells at him to get to work.
Harold's Café
Shane finds Dipi in the kitchen and tells her that the kids have been asking him about Christmas. Dipi was just assuming they'll do the same thing they do every year, but Shane doesn't think he's going to be able to. Dipi's confused as she thought they were making progress. Shane looks uncomfortable and says there's something that's been bugging him lately.
SHANE: When Pierce left you were really cut up.
DIPI: I said sorry about that, Shane.
SHANE: So that got me to thinking, did you want more with him? Was it only a fling or did you actually want to be with him?
DIPI: I don't want to talk about him. I know how much it hurts you.
SHANE: I want the truth, Dip, so just tell me.
DIPI: (mournfully) When I found out Chloe and Pierce were separating I went to him because yeah, I wanted to see if it would work.
Shane looks cut-up but also like he was expecting this news.
Lassiters Complex
Jay puts rubbish in the bins out the back of the Café. Mackenzie tells him she's sorry this has happened to the family - it's like there's been one thing after the next this year. Hendrix joins them and says he heard about the break-in from Terese. Jay asks how 'work' is going and Hendrix tells him that, "I've done everything that I've been asked to do, and I've done it properly." Mackenzie says he sounds like a model employee and then heads back into the Café to help. When the boys are alone, Jay smiles and says that everything must have gone smoothly.
HENDRIX: (annoyed) No, Jay, it did not. Turns out my swipe card doesn't work for the office, so I had to go hunting for one. And by the time I got in, Paul and Terese turned up.
JAY: You didn't get caught did you?
HENDRIX: No I didn't, but...
Jay quickly changes the subject to how well the clean-up is going when Levi appears behind Hendrix. Levi asks Hendrix for a word before he goes back to work. Hendrix and Levi try not to freak out.
Harold's Café
Dipi goes out into the shop where Shane is taking a moment for himself. He tells Dipi that in some ways it was a relief to hear the truth.
SHANE: What did he say when you asked him if you two had a chance?
DIPI: You really want the details?
SHANE: In for a penny...
DIPI: He turned me down.
SHANE: And if he hadn't you'd be riding off into the sunset?
DIPI: It was never going to happen.
SHANE: If you knew that you never would have asked him.
DIPI: I meant it was a fantasy. He was still in love with Chloe even though their marriage was over.
SHANE: A fantasy? What about now?
DIPI: What do you mean?
SHANE: If Pierce rocked up here, told you that he wanted to give it a shot, what would you do?
DIPI: How do I even answer that?
SHANE: With the truth. Would you go off with him?
DIPI: ... I might consider, I don't know.
SHANE: You'd consider it.
DIPI: I know it sounds crazy coming out of my mouth, let alone saying it, especially because it was such a hard no. But that's the truth, and you wanted it.
Shane looks hurt and says that he doesn't know how they come back from this.
Lassiters Complex
Mackenzie and Jay watch from afar as Levi questions Hendrix. Mac says that whatever's going on looks serious and she can only hope he hasn't done anything stupid again. The main reason Levi is questioning Hendrix is because he thinks he has motive to break-in to Harold's as a revenge of sorts against Dipi. Hendrix can't believe his ears and says he had nothing to do with the crime. Levi takes his word for it for now but says he'll be in touch if they need anything else. Once Levi's gone, Jay sidles up to Hendrix and asks what went on. Hendrix is frustrated with Jay and says he's become a suspect.
HENDRIX: I knew I shouldn't have wiped that footage. I'm stuffed now thanks to you!
JAY: I really appreciate what you've done.
HENDRIX: Jay, whatever man. I need to get back to work.
Erinsborough Police Station
Yashvi asks Levi if he found anything on the CCTV but Levi says it's iffy. Parts of the night are missing, along with footage from other dates too. He figures there might be something wrong with the camera. Levi was just about to give Dipi his report and asks Yashvi if she wants to join him, but Yashvi says she might give it a miss in case Ned's there.
LEVI: Okay, none of my business.
YASHVI: He thinks we're going to turn out like mum and dad.
LEVI: Why would he think that?
YASHVI: I don't know, because we have trust issues and so do they obviously but we're nothing like them.
LEVI: I can see where he's coming from. I'm not saying that you guys are going to end up going down that same path, but it's worth clearing up.
YASHVI: We don't need to clear anything up, Ned's worrying about nothing.
LEVI: If he's that worried he must have his reasons. Have you asked him what they are?
YASHVI: Do you think I'd be here listening to you if I had?
Levi suggests Yashvi go and talk to Ned to sort things out, as it's probably her best bet so she doesn't end up like her parents.
The Waterhole
Paul and Terese find Harlow and ask how her day's going. Harlow replies that it's "oddly satisfying" giving hotel rooms a deep clean. Paul smiles and says maybe he should get Harlow to give the rest of the staff a pep talk, but Harlow knows that wouldn't particularly endear her to her new co-workers. Terese tells her that they've decided to give the Lassiters uniforms a revamp - they're putting it out to tender and are going to follow sustainable practices. Harlow thinks that's wonderful and asks what'll happen to the old uniforms, but Paul says they'll donate them. The conversation is cut short when Hendrix rejoins Harlow and Paul notes that he's not meant to be on a break right now.
HENDRIX: We just came over to grab some coffees.
PAUL: So an unscheduled break then?
HARLOW: I thought you said our breaks matched up?
HENDRIX: It was ten minutes.
PAUL: Ten minutes of my time.
TERESE: He can get a coffee...
PAUL: No, you were already late this morning and now this. What, you can have a nice, long, boozy lunch as well?
HENDRIX: No, no, you can just dock me for the time I've missed.
PAUL: Yeah don't worry, I'll be doing that. And you can forget about portering anymore, from now on you're in the laundry basement. Got it?
HENDRIX: Laundry?! Come on.
HARLOW: Grandad, come on.
PAUL: It's either that or nothing, it's your choice. What do you want?
HENDRIX: No that's fine; laundry it is.
Paul nods and then says Harlow should get back to work too. When Hendrix is alone, Jay finds him and offers him coffee and a treat from the Café as a way of saying thanks. Hendrix is in no mood for Jay though and angrily asks if he thinks that small offering of food is supposed to make up for everything.
JAY: Not even close, I know that. But getting rid of that footage was a big save for me and I owe you big time.
HENDRIX: Yeah, well, I just got put on laundry duty because I spent the morning covering your butt.
JAY: And I really appreciate that.
HENDRIX: Save it, Jay! You've already said it. You're not worth it, we're done.
Lassiters Lake
Ned brings Yashvi a coffee and lets her know the Café is almost back to normal. Yashvi says that gives them plenty of time to talk then, and for her to listen.
YASHVI: I don't think we're anything like my parents.
NED: But your parents got together right after your dad got out of prison. And then Dipi helped him put his life back together. You honestly can't see the similarities?
YASHVI: No, I can't.
NED: Vi I have stuffed up so many times and you always stand by me.
YASHVI: It's still different.
NED: Why don't you have your dad's back? You treated him really hard, it's almost like you think he deserved to be cheated on because of what he did to your family with the drugs.
YASHVI: No I don't think that.
NED: But the fact that you've taken Dipi's side completely... Look, that's what worries me. What if my mistakes push you to the point where you resent me? And then you end up doing what your mum did - look for something better.
YASHVI: I would never do that to you, Ned. What mum did was wrong. We'll learn from my parents mistakes, Ned. No matter what happens between us I will never react the way mum did, I promise.
The Waterhole
Shane fills Roxy in on what happened at the Café. She asks if anything was damaged but Shane says the insurance will cover it. Roxy then says that if Shane ever wants to talk about what happened with Dipi, she's there to listen. Roxy just didn't want to push anything as she might be the last person Shane wants to talk to. As it turns out, though, Shane does need someone to confide in.
SHANE: Dipi wanted a relationship with Pierce. She wanted to leave me and the family and everything.
ROXY: That's what she told you?
SHANE: Yeah. It's given me a good idea of where I stand.
ROXY: (kindly) She stayed. It has to mean something.
SHANE: No, she only stayed because Pierce knocked her back. She loved him. I just thought she needed an escape from all the pressure my addiction was putting on her. But it turns out what she had with Pierce was the real deal, at least for her. That just means I need to focus on myself and my recovery, right? (Roxy smiles and nods at him) Only, uh, I thought me and Dipi would be together forever. I guess that's not happening.
Feeling sad and sorry for himself, Shane walks away. Roxy watches him go, looking upset for her friend.
Harold's Café
Ned gives Yashvi some space so she can talk to her mum. Yashvi comments on how much better the Café looks now, and then asks Dipi if she's spoken to Shane about Christmas yet. Dipi says he mentioned something about all of them being together but she's not sure it's the best idea. Yashvi still doesn't understand why, especially since Shane was the one who rounded everyone up to help clean the Café. Dipi just says it's "become complicated", but that's not enough for Yashvi.
YASHVI: Come on mum, I know it's hard but if there was ever a chance to get us back together it's Christmas.
DIPI: It's not about me not making an effort. I told your father something I'm not sure we can fix.
YASHVI: What did you say? (Dipi falters in answering) Seriously mum, what did you say?
DIPI: I told your father I wanted a relationship with Pierce. And if he came back I might leave with him.
YASHVI: (shellshocked) A relationship?
DIPI: I'm still not over Pierce and your father suspected it.
YASHVI: But all this time I thought it was dad's fault that you went to Pierce because he was supporting you and then one thing just led to another?
DIPI: It did.
YASHVI: But you'd still be with him? You'd leave us?
DIPI: Yashvi, let me explain.
YASHVI: (angry) Explain what? What is there to explain? I had you completely wrong!
