Harold's Café
Jane is very pleased with herself having decided to set up a housemate group chat for No 32, and is telling a blatantly-not-listening Nicolette all about it.
JANE: Now, I understand that these threads have a name, and so I have come up with a fun portmanteau - Hastobrennaka! Hmm? It's made up of components of all of our surnames.
But Nicolette is staring distractedly at her phone.
JANE: Fun, huh? Nicolette?
NICOLETTE: Hmm?
JANE: You obviously don't care about my group chat idea.
NICOLETTE: No, I care. I very much care.
Jane wonders whether Nicolette is upset about Pierce's parting warning about her to Chloe. But Nicolette denies this. At this point, Toadie and Audrey come in and take another table. Nicolette is heavily distracted by their presence. Audrey and Toadie are enthusing to one another about their kiss at the lake. Jane starts earwigging.
JANE: Aww, isn't that lovely?
NICOLETTE (unenthused): They're just having lunch.
JANE: Oh, clearly a date. Good for Toadie. Karl and Susan will be very happy that he's found someone as kind as Audrey.
NICOLETTE: Why?
JANE: Oh, he's like a son to them.
NICOLETTE: Oh. I didn't realise they were that close.
JANE: They practically raised him.
NICOLETTE: So they'd be very protective of him?
JANE: Oh, absolutely. They'd do anything to stop him from getting hurt.
While Toadie and Audrey flirt over some chat about their favourite condiments, the cogs start whirring for Nicolette, as a scheme begins to form in her mind...
Erinsborough Hospital
Karl is updating Sheila on Nathan's condition; he expects him to be discharged in a couple of days. But Sheila is worried that Nathan's injury will prevent him working, as he works on a building site.
At this point, Clive turns up, and sensing awkwardness, Karl leaves him and Sheila to talk. Clive's surprised to learn that Sheila knows Nathan; she explains that she was involved in his accident, and Nathan's history with Levi, as one of the boys who bashed him as a kid. Sheila is cautious about explaining how difficult she's found it, not wanting to overstep the mark with Clive.
CLIVE: I haven't seen you for ages. We should catch up.
SHEILA: I'd like that.
CLIVE: Well, are you free now?
The Waterhole
Karl and Susan are having dinner at the pub, and Nicolette turns up, on the pretext of wanting to give Karl a donation for Movember. He's visibly unimpressed with her offer of $20, but grudgingly acknowledges that 'every little bit helps'.
NICOLETTE: I know it's not as much as Audrey, but she's been really generous with her winnings.
SUSAN: Yes, good for her.
NICOLETTE: Yeah... although, it does make me wonder if she's got an agenda.
SUSAN: Well, why would you say that?
NICOLETTE: Oh, just when you've got a lot of money, you can use it to get what you want. I wouldn't be surprised if she donated all that cash to make Toadie feel like he had to pay her a bit of attention.
KARL: But she didn't want him to know about the money.
NICOLETTE: Or is that what she wants you to think?
SUSAN: That would make it a highly calculated plan.
NICOLETTE: Wouldn't be the first time. Audrey has a habit of overinvesting in her boyfriends. Just keep an eye on him. I wouldn't want him feeling obligated.
Nicolette leaves, and Susan and Karl stew on the information she's delivered.
Erinsborough Hospital
Sheila is telling Clive more about the accident that led to Nathan landing up in hospital.
SHEILA: The thing I feel awful about is the fact that he's no longer the ratbag that ruined Levi's life (...) Problem is that Bea's set her sights on him, and that means that Levi won't have his chance with her.
CLIVE: Levi's a pretty good catch. He'll find someone else.
SHEILA: Yeah. But Bea and Levi had such a great connection, and that's rare.
CLIVE: Well, either way, it's not your fault.
Sheila is gazing at Clive, and acknowledges that she 'needed this' chat. She smiles at him as they bid one another goodnight, evidently believing she can feel a spark between them again.
No 26
In the kitchen, Roxy is explaining to Kyle why Dipi and Levi are Not In This Episode™, meaning it's just them for dinner, as well as Sheila when she gets back from the hospital. Kyle thinks it's nice that Sheila has been visiting Nathan. Roxy wonders if Nathan will stick around once he's recovered. Kyle says it depends whether Levi carries on matchmaking him and Bea.
ROXY: Are you regretting getting involved?
KYLE: A bit. It's too messy.
ROXY: Yeah, you're right. I reckon we should never, ever get involved in anyone's business ever again.
Yeah, whatever, Roxy - until this time next week, no doubt! Kyle's phone rings - he's surprised to see it's his ex, Georgia, calling.
KYLE: Georgia, hey, how are you? ... Are you serious? ... What?
Kyle looks worried, and heads into the other room with the phone. Roxy looks worried too.
The Waterhole
Audrey is slightly frosty with Nicolette, who has summoned her to the pub for a drink; Audrey sarcastically queries whether Nic just wants to yell at her again.
NICOLETTE: I thought you might want to debrief on that sexy little date?
AUDREY: How did you...?
NICOLETTE: I saw you guys pashing at the lake. Looked very cute.
AUDREY: You're mocking me.
NICOLETTE: No, no - I'm really happy for you. Toadie's a great guy.
AUDREY: You didn't want this for me earlier.
NICOLETTE: I was having a bad day, and I took that out on you and your happiness. Which was not fair of me, and I'm sorry.
Audrey falls for Nicolette's fake apology, but admits she's terrified she might stuff things up with Toadie. Nicolette offers some advice to help her do just that.
NICOLETTE: Just be yourself, and make sure he knows you're serious. Have you sussed out Karl and Susan yet?
AUDREY: For what?
NICOLETTE: Well, they're practically his parents. You might want to get their seal of approval.
AUDREY: I don't want to come on too strong.
NICOLETTE: Oh, a few well-meaning questions to his nearest and dearest shows that you're considerate.
At which point, Karl conveniently returns to collect his forgotten jacket, and Audrey decides to follow Nicolette's advice, asking Karl to stay for a drink with them.
AUDREY: I actually want to pick your brain about Toadie.
With Nicolette's earlier warning about Audrey getting overinvested in boyfriends still ringing in his ears, Karl looks awkward as Audrey gets down to asking some very specific questions about Toadie's love of fishing. A bemused Karl nonetheless agrees to partake in a merlot while she queries him further about it. Nicolette looks pleased at how her scheme is progressing.
No 26
Kyle tells Roxy about the purpose of Georgia's phone call. Bossy, his dog who now lives with Georgia in Germany, is ill, her former brain tumour having come back. Kyle's very upset.
KYLE: There's nothing we can do. She has about a week. Two at best.
ROXY: What are you gonna do?
KYLE: ... I really want to say goodbye, you know? I think I need to. I think I'll regret it if I don't. I'm gonna have to look up flights to Germany, and see if it's even possible.
ROXY: Are you gonna stay with her? Both of them?
KYLE: I haven't even thought that far ahead.
ROXY: Do you think that it'd be weird between you and Georgia? It's been such a long time.
KYLE: Nah. We're sweet now. She'd just be working the whole time.
ROXY: I can come with you if you want. I'm sure I can get some time off work.
KYLE: You'd do that?
Roxy nods. At this point, Sheila comes in, and sees how upset Kyle is. She asks what's wrong.
The Waterhole
The next day, Sheila arrives at work to find Jane and Clive having breakfast together. She explains to them about Bossy's brain tumour having come back, and Kyle planning on flying out to say goodbye. Jane expresses her condolences, and invites Sheila to join them for a coffee before her shift. Clive has to leave, but asks Sheila...
CLIVE: When you make Jane's coffee, can you make it extra hot? She never asks and she always regrets it.
SHEILA: Why don't you ask?
JANE: Oh, I never want to make a fuss. I suppose it stems from all my years waitressing. I still have nightmares of rude customers, demanding that the sun-dried tomatoes be on the side, and ordering a cappuccino in a mug!
SHEILA: You clearly haven't worked in hospitality since the eighties (Looking at Clive) A wise man once told me to let the past go, and not carry your baggage, and demand what you want.
CLIVE: Yeah, she won't. She's hopeless.
JANE: Excuse me!
CLIVE: But she would stand a chance with a halfway decent tutor if you are up for the challenge?
SHEILA: Have we met?
CLIVE: A few times.
Sheila gazes fondly at Clive.
Harold's Café
Toadie is at the counter on the phone to Ned, thanking him for holding the art class for him and Audrey as a backdrop to their date. Karl and Susan come in; Karl is loudly talking about how Audrey was 'pummelling' him for information on Toadie. Susan encourages him to be quiet as they see Toadie is there, but they continue to talk about Audrey at a table of their own.
KARL: I couldn't get away.
SUSAN: Yeah, I bet the free Malbec didn't deter you, either.
KARL: Nicolette's right about her. She's very intense.
SUSAN: Or she just cares enough to ask a few questions. What's wrong with that? Look how happy he is.
KARL: Yeah. For now.
SUSAN: We need to let him decide who he is going to date. And by 'we', I obviously mean you.
KARL: Okay, look, he's had a very bad run of luck lately. How am I the bad guy for wanting to help him steer his ship back on course?
SUSAN: People who board other people's ships are called pirates.
KARL: If he'd known about Rose's agenda earlier, it would've saved a lot of heartache.
SUSAN: Fair point (...) But despite what Nicolette says, we don't know that Audrey's got an agenda. As far as we know, Toadie's got no idea about this donation.
KARL: Well, if he doesn't, shouldn't he know now?
Despite Susan's vociferous objections, Karl gets up and goes over to tell Toadie about the donation...
The Waterhole
Sheila is honouring her promise to help Jane be more assertive when ordering coffee, by acting out a roleplay scenario! She serves Jane a latte, but Jane says that she wants a hot one.
SHEILA: Sorry - busy.
JANE: Oh, okay. I'm sure it's fine.
SHEILA: No, no, no, Jane!
JANE: Well, at least I didn't apologise that time.
SHEILA: But don't accept laziness!
JANE: I just don't see why a busy waitress getting paid minimum wage should have to put up with my terrible taste for burnt milk!
Sheila suggests they reverse the roles, so that Jane's the waitress and Sheila the customer.
JANE: There you are! One latte!
SHEILA: No, I ordered fish and chips.
JANE: Really? I thought we were doing the coffee?
SHEILA: Uh, it's not your job to think. It's your job to write down what I want, and bring it out to me (...)
JANE (laughs): Oh, I love the energy, but I don't know that I have that approach in me.
SHEILA: But you ask the best for your students at school, don't you? Why don't you do the same for yourself?
They run the roleplay again.
SHEILA: Dude. Latte.
JANE: Is it a hot one?
SHEILA (sticks a finger in the cup and licks it): Seems hot to me.
JANE: Well, did you write that down? Because I am being very specific.
SHEILA: Oh, I hear ya, lady.
JANE: Well, you just... You just take that back, and bring me a hot one - so hot that the milk should have a skin on it and the barista should be horrified. Because that is the way that I like it. And I am the one paying, and so... there.
SHEILA: How did that feel?
JANE: Rather good, actually.
Jane looks excited by her newfound assertiveness!
Harold's Café
Audrey has clocked that Nicolette has ordered a decaf coffee, and has seemingly concluded she must be pregnant. She congratulates her, but Nicolette asks Audrey not to tell the whole world, as it's not confirmed.
Toadie emerges from the bathroom, and asks Audrey if it's true that she is the mystery donor to the Sonya Foundation. Karl, who has been continuing his coffee with Susan nearby, pops up and apologises, but tells Audrey he thought Toadie had a right to know now that they are dating. Nicolette looks worried.
TOADIE: Why keep it a secret?
AUDREY: Because I... I didn't feel like I deserved it. I hated having it hanging over my head, like this big responsibility.
Nicolette drags Karl away, saying they should give Toadie and Audrey space to discuss it - much to Karl's disappointment!
Audrey insists to Toadie she didn't need the donation money for herself; she wanted to do something good with it, and realised the foundation was her chance.
TOADIE: Right. And that would make me indebted to you in some way?
AUDREY: What? No! No, of course not! I never wanted you to know about any of this.
Susan and Karl are listening in. Susan gives Karl a look.
AUDREY: How I feel about you has got nothing to do with the money.
TOADIE: Sonya was one of the most generous and kind-hearted people that I ever met. You are something special.
Evidently, Toadie believes Audrey's version of events. Also listening from nearby, Nicolette is looking very worried that her scheme isn't working out as she'd envisaged.
No 26
Kyle is looking up flights to Munich; there's one leaving at five o'clock, so he tells Roxy he'll probably take that. Roxy still seems concerned about the prospect of Kyle spending time with Georgia, and again asks if he's worked out where he's staying. Kyle says he'll probably stay on the couch of his mate Gerhardt, as it will be easier than hassling Georgia.
ROXY: Is there room for me?
KYLE: I reckon one of us has to stay here and keep an eye on Gran, don't you think?
Roxy is visibly disappointed, but puts on a supportive front and agrees to stay here. Kyle is looking at a photo of his younger self, with Bossy.
ROXY: Are you okay?
KYLE: Yeah. I just don't know whether I should tell Jade or not.
ROXY: Who's Jade?
KYLE: My ex. I bought Bossy for her as a birthday pressie (...) She wasn't impressed at first. She probably thought I was getting her a ring or something.
ROXY (disconcerted): Right.
Kyle then makes Roxy feel even more insecure by talking about a third ex, Amy, who he's planning to ring from Germany to update her on the Bossy situation!
ROXY: Guessing Bossy was like another fur baby for her, too?
KYLE: Yeah. Jimmy and Bossy were best buds. Amy loved her, too. If it wasn't for her, we would've put Bossy down a long time ago.
ROXY: Seems like Bossy really touched a lot of lives.
KYLE: Yeah. We used to do everything together. She was the best girl I ever had.
Roxy continues to look insecure...
Harold's Café
Toadie is with Karl and Susan. He thanks Karl for telling him about Audrey's donation.
KARL (to Susan): You see that? Gratitude.
SUSAN (to Karl): Oh, you got lucky.
TOADIE: I don't think there was a hidden agenda. Audrey barely knew me when the donation landed. And, like she said, it was burning a hole in her pocket. I think that the foundation was just in the right place at the right time.
KARL: Do you really think she's trustworthy?
TOADIE: Yeah. I do. I mean, I have been wrong before, but...
KARL: Yeah. She's quite a chatty Cathy, though. She asks a lot of questions.
TOADIE: What's wrong with that?
SUSAN: Yes, it just means she's engaged with the person she's talking to.
TOADIE: Yeah. And I like the fact that someone is interested in wanting to know me.
SUSAN: Exactly. I think you need to plan the third date.
Karl looks less convinced, but when pressed by Toadie, agrees that Susan is right.
KARL: If she makes you happy, you shouldn't be talking to us about it.
The Waterhole
At the bar, Sheila asks Jane when Nicolette will know whether she's pregnant; within a fortnight, Jane replies. Conversation moves onto their invites to the Kennedys' Christmas party, which stipulated that guests should bring their own glasses, and wine!
SHEILA: That man has the longest pockets and shortest arms in history.
JANE: Clive's right about you. You're a lot wittier than Karl gives you credit for.
SHEILA: Clive said that? Really? ... Do you see a lot of him?
JANE: Oh, we catch up once a week. You know, it's lovely being around someone who's known you for such a long time. It almost feels like family.
SHEILA: How's he going? You know?
JANE: Well, a little lonely. I suppose, like most middle-aged men, he needs a woman to run his social calendar. I think he misses you.
SHEILA: Really?
JANE: Oh, yes! I mean, you're a force to be reckoned with. You take that kind of energy out of anyone's life, they'd feel the loss.
Sheila looks hopeful.
Erinsborough Hospital
Audrey is gushing to Nicolette about how Toadie compared her to Sonya. Nicolette can barely contain her contempt, and is visibly furious that her plan has backfired.
AUDREY: I mean, just to be thought of in the same way as her -
NICOLETTE: Audrey, you can't get involved with Toadie. The secret will come out.
AUDREY: It won't. I promise.
NICOLETTE: You're dating him. What do you think happens with pillow talk? People tell each other their deepest, darkest secrets.
AUDREY: I won't do that.
NICOLETTE: I know you! The guilt will eat away at you, and the closer you two get, the more you'll feel like he'd forgive you, which he won't!
AUDREY: I gave the money away, so all the guilt I was carrying is gone.
NICOLETTE: You don't feel guilty about starting your relationship based on a lie?
AUDREY: How I feel about Toadie isn't a lie.
NICOLETTE: But you stole thousands of dollars, and you're keeping that from him.
AUDREY: Yes, but I gave the money to a good cause. And Toadie coming into my life feels like a reward for finally having done the right thing.
NICOLETTE: Well, it's always gonna be there in the back of your mind -
AUDREY: Nicolette, stop it! What we did was unforgivable, but I am tired of letting it ruin my life. So please, stop worrying about me ruining yours, and let me just be happy, okay?
No 26
Kyle is packing his bag in preparation for his trip to Germany. Roxy half-jokingly suggests he take a photo of her with him, to show all his friends in Germany how lucky he is. But Kyle is distracted by gazing forlornly at one of Bossy's old toys he's taking with him, and Roxy's again left feeling insecure.
Sheila pops home to say goodbye to Kyle, but says she's shortly heading out again to the hospital to see Clive. Kyle looks surprised.
The Waterhole
Clive is putting his name down for a Movember donation for Karl. Karl asks if Clive is coming to the Kennedys' Christmas party. Karl is excited when Clive says he's planning on bringing a bottle of Barolo wine.
KARL: Might just sequester that away in my bedroom, keep it for just us two!
CLIVE: I didn't say I was gonna share it.
KARL: ... Yeah, well, despite that, it'd be good to have you there. I thought you might be avoiding Sheila? Things seemed a bit awkward between you two last night.
CLIVE: No, they're fine. I mean, I'm glad I was there, actually. She's a glutton for punishment, and I'd hate to see her spiral anymore.
KARL: You still care for her, don't you?
CLIVE: Well, we were together a long time.
KARL: Yeah. So no reunion on the cards?
Clive considers.
No 26
Sheila tells Kyle and Roxy it was 'so good' talking to Clive again, just like old times; and that he really knows what to do to calm her down.
ROXY: I'm sure he does. Where'd you do it? The coolroom?
KYLE: Oi!
SHEILA: No! I mean, he knew that I needed a distraction, and so he suggested I talk to Jane. He knows me better than I know myself.
KYLE: Be careful, Gran.
SHEILA: I know, I know. But I don't think it's one-sided. Jane says he misses me.
KYLE: As a mate?
SHEILA: Well, we were never mates. He told me to stop punishing myself, and I think that is man code for, 'I forgive you'.
The Waterhole
But in the pub, Clive tells Karl that while he's ready to be friends with Sheila again...
CLIVE: ... as for romance, I think that door's closed.
KARL: Okay. Doors were made to be opened.
CLIVE: Yeah, not this one. I think too much has happened. I'm ready to leave that in the past and move on.
No 26
Roxy tells Sheila that if she thinks she has a chance with Clive, she should give it a go. Kyle looks unconvinced.
SHEILA: Well, the signs are all there. He wants me back! It's time to strike.
