The Waterhole
Shane hastily tells Dipi it's not what she thinks, but Dipi's busy trying to process the fact that they've kept the kiss a secret for so long. Roxy tearfully says it was all her fault and not to blame Shane.
DIPI: Don't you dare tell me how to feel.
SHANE: Roxy just got confused.
DIPI: Of what?
SHANE: Nothing, it was a mistake.
DIPI: (crying) You didn't tell me.
SHANE: No but I wanted to, and I came to tell you now.
DIPI: A week later, Shane?
ROXY: I can explain, Dipi.
DIPI: I've been trying to make things right with you!
ROXY: I know and I felt really...
DIPI: (yelling) Just don't!
Dipi walks out in tears. Shane gives Roxy a livid look before following his wife, while Roxy glances back at Sheila, who just raises her eyebrows at her employee.
Number 30
Yashvi arrives home from her police fitness exam and boasts to Toadie about how well she did. All she has left now is the interview and written exam. Her good mood evaporates, however, when Dipi and Shane walk in mid-argument.
SHANE: Just stop and hear me out! It was nothing.
DIPI: Kissing Roxy is not nothing, Shane!
They fall quiet when they realise they have an audience. Yashvi and Toadie are shocked and Yashvi wants to know what's going on.
SHANE: Roxy kissed me. Very briefly and very much without my consent.
DIPI: How are you justifying this?
SHANE: I want you to understand that it's not a big deal.
DIPI: Except that it's not just about the kiss, is it? It's about everything else. You've been putting her before me for weeks now, and you made me feel crazy for thinking it was me and I was worried about it!
SHANE: Because nothing had happened then!
DIPI: But it did and you didn't tell me.
SHANE: Things were going so well between us I didn't want to stuff that up because of something that meant nothing.
DIPI: If it meant nothing, why did you two keep it a secret from me?
She glares at him before walking off. Yashvi looks a mixture of fuming and hurt.
Number 22
Terese, Ned and Paul chat about how well Yashvi's doing with her police prep work. While Terese is getting another drink, Paul gets an update on what's happening with Zenin. Ned says he hasn't had any more threats yet but he's going to take Paul's advice and find out what he's 'meant' to have seen. Roxy arrives home in tears and tells Terese that she messed up big time. Terese gives her a big hug, waiting to hear more.
The Waterhole
Sheila goes on to Gary and Kyle about having to keep the bar running alone while two of her key employees are "in some weird, romantic stand-off". Karl, who has been listening, gives his two cents and tells Sheila not to jump to conclusions and throw around labels until they know the full story.
KARL: Not everything's black and white.
SHEILA: Going off your own experience are you, Doctor Karl?
Karl looks uncomfortable and heads home with his takeaway. Gary agrees with Karl, though, he knows Shane adores Dipi and can't see him give Roxy a second glance. Sheila admits that Shane and Roxy both said that Roxy was the instigator but can it really be that simple? Gary replies that it's never that simple and Sheila adds that regardless of all that, at the end of the day Dipi is still really hurt.
Number 22
Roxy has confessed everything to her family and mutters that she's just proven everyone right who thought she was a "skank". She doesn't know how she's going to show her face around the street again, but Ned says that beating herself up over it isn't going to help either. Terese agrees and thinks Roxy should give herself a break. She goes into the kitchen to get Roxy a cuppa while Ned sits with Roxy on the couch and puts a comforting hand over hers. In the kitchen, a previously quiet Paul can't help give his opinion to Terese.
TERESE: I hate seeing her punish herself like this.
PAUL: Hmm. I can't help wondering if she's being real, though.
TERESE: (incredulous) Excuse me?
PAUL: Well you don't see the similarity from when she kissed me to get back at you?
TERESE: Paul this is a very different situation! She doesn't hold a grudge against Dipi.
PAUL: Well that must have meant she felt something for Shane. Unless it's the other way around!
TERESE: She swears that it was her fault.
PAUL: Yeah but it doesn't mean that Shane's head wasn't turned to begin with. You know what? I'm going to be very interested to see how this plays out.
He gives a smug look to Terese then watches Roxy and Ned chat on the couch.
Number 30
Yashvi stands arms folded and a good space away from her dad, interrogating him about Roxy. She asks him if it was just one kiss and Shane says yes, explaining he made it "crystal clear to Roxy that it wasn't on".
YASHVI: Then why did she think you were into it?
SHANE: It wasn't about that. Listen, Vi, it's going to be okay. Your mum and I are going to work this out.
YASHVI: No I want to know why she kissed you.
SHANE: She just got confused.
YASHVI: And you didn't see it coming?
SHANE: No. Not at all.
YASHVI: Right. Well, can't say I don't know what that's like.
SHANE: No! This is nothing like what happened with you and Ned. Not even close.
Toadie, who has been hovering awkwardly in the background, asks them to please keep their voices down, as the kids are asleep. But Yashvi isn't done.
YASHVI: I can't believe you let mum find out through Roxy!
SHANE: It's not what I wanted. Roxy begged me not to say anything.
YASHVI: If she was so desperate for her not to know then why did she blurt it out?
SHANE: I don't know. She was feeling bad about it too. It just got too much for her.
YASHVI: Or she wanted you to be the bad guy.
SHANE: No, that's the last thing she wanted.
YASHVI: It's a sure way to get between you and mum.
SHANE: Roxy does not have an agenda here, trust me. She's not Scarlett.
YASHVI: She says one thing and then does another. That sounds exactly like Scarlett to me.
Their heated discussion comes to an abrupt end when Dipi flees out the front door without saying a word to anyone. Yashvi shoots her dad another irate look.
Number 26
Dipi has fled to the Cannings where she finds a sympathetic ear from Sheila, and a sympathetic (albeit uncomfortable) ear from Gary. Dipi couldn't understand why Shane was trying so hard to keep her away from Roxy but now she knows she feels sick. She knew the work buddy situation was going to get out of control but she let Shane convince her there was nothing going on. Sheila says there wasn't anything going on, though, until the kiss. Dipi feels bad about taking up their time and starts to book a hotel on her phone but Sheila says she can sleep in the spare room. Gary doesn't look too comfortable with this idea but Sheila won't take no for an answer.
Number 22
Roxy thanks Ned for sitting and watching TV with her.
ROXY: I bet you wish we weren't related though.
NED: Nah, not at all. Which is weird because usually I do.
Yashvi bursts through the door in a very angry fashion and yells at Roxy that her parents are tearing themselves apart because of her. Roxy apologises but Yashvi snarkily wonders if she always goes after married guys or is it just because Shane gave Roxy some attention. Yashvi calls Roxy a home wrecker, which is Terese's cue to guide her niece into the kitchen while Ned tries to calm Yashvi down.
NED: I know you're shocked but that was harsh.
YASHVI: Why are you on her side?
NED: No I'm not on her side, but maybe you need to listen to what she has to say.
YASHVI: I don't need to!
NED: Hey, she knows she stuffed up, okay? She'd take it back if she could. (Yashvi scoffs and tries to move away) Don't just leave.
YASHVI: If you're going to wave the flag for poor little Roxy, don't expect me to stick around.
And with that, Yashvi storms out.
Number 22/Number 30/Number 26
Sad montage time! Roxy cries on the couch alone in the dark. Shane sits at the dining table in #30 waiting for his wife to come home, but no one is walking through that door. And Dipi is alone in the Canning kitchen, trying to wrap her head around her life imploding.
Number 26
The next morning Kyle is over to have breakfast with his family. He can't blame Dipi for not wanting to have a bar of Shane, but Gary says it might be good if she found somewhere else to stay.
KYLE: Why? I thought you two got along like a house on fire?
GARY: Yeah but it took Shane ages to be okay with that. I don't think I want to get between the two of them again.
He quietens down when Dipi joins them in the kitchen, looking worse for wear after a rough night's sleep. Sheila comments on her friend's appearance and tells her she can stay at the house longer if she wants, much to Gary's chagrin. Dipi says it's a kind offer but she wants to be at home if Yashvi gets into the police academy. But Sheila says the offer still stands - her and Gary would love to have Dipi stay! Gary offers up a meek 'yep' in agreement.
Number 28
Karl finds Toadie in a meeting with Finn, but he can't help asking how things are with Dipi and Shane. Toadie says Dipi spent the night elsewhere and Karl thinks that doesn't sound promising. Karl adds that for a one-way kiss, the aftermath seems to be quite extreme.
TOADIE: Yashvi thinks that Roxy deliberately confessed to get between Shane and Dipi.
FINN: Is Roxy after him?
TOADIE: I tried to talk to Shane about the idea but...
KARL: He snowballed you, right? (Toadie nods) Do you think there's something he's not admitting to?
TOADIE: They have gotten pretty close lately.
FINN: He could be in denial. Might be why he kept it a secret.
TOADIE: No, no I don't think so. Shane loves Dipi.
KARL: Yeah of course he does but you and I both know that it's possible to stray from someone you love.
Finn 'Feelings for Elly' Kelly listens to this conversation quite uncomfortably.
Ramsay Street
Shane is staring intently at his phone, hoping to receive contact from Dipi. Roxy emerges from #22 and walks purposefully over to him so she can apologise for dumping him in it last night.
SHANE: Do you even realise how badly you've stuffed things up for me, Rox? Why'd you do it?
ROXY: (upset) I told you I couldn't be around her. I couldn't deal with the guilt.
SHANE: So you just had to blurt it out in front of everyone?
ROXY: Yeah, I'm sorry.
SHANE: I was going to tell her in a way that wouldn't publicly humiliate her. You should have kept your mouth shut.
ROXY: Do you hate me now?
We never hear Shane's answer as Dipi, with impeccable timing, appears from #26 to find them chatting to one another. A flicker of hurt passes over Dipi's face at first, then she just shakes her head like 'of course'. Roxy apologises to Shane again and quickly scurries home. Shane says to Dipi that he should have told her about the kiss "straight off the bat" but Dipi, barging past him, quips that he didn't.
SHANE: Can we just sit down and talk through this.
DIPI: It's not that complicated. You lied to me. I'm moving in with Sheila.
Shane's left alone and emotional on the street.
Lassiters Complex
Ned is on the phone with Warrinor Prison finalising his visit. He's edgy because the time clashes with plans he had with Yashvi, but he has no choice but to go. Ned hangs up just as Yashvi finds him. She hates fighting with him as well as her dad, and while she's still annoyed he stuck up for Roxy, she wants to put it all behind them till after their date. Ned breaks the news that he has to cancel and lies to her that he's meeting up with a prospective client who saw his Sonya mural. He promises to make it up to Yashvi later.
After Ned leaves, Yashvi sees her dad putting out the Waterhole sandwich board and snarkily blames him for her date being cancelled because her and Ned are fighting about him and Roxy. Shane says he's sorry to hear that but he's got enough problems of his own at the moment.
SHANE: You know your mum's moving in with Sheila?
YASHVI: Can't say I blame her.
SHANE: Okay, that's really not helping.
YASHVI: Well why aren't you over there convincing her to come home?
SHANE: I don't know, little thing called 'work'?
YASHVI: Weak excuse if you ask me.
SHANE: Okay, no one did. Besides, whatever I say to her it only seems to make things worse.
YASHVI: How about 'I don't want you to go'?
SHANE: I would say that is a given.
YASHVI: How can you be sure if you don't actually ask?
Shane thinks his daughter might actually have a point.
Number 26
Kyle invites Roxy in, who has come to deliver her letter of resignation from The Waterhole to Sheila. Kyle's stunned at the news but Sheila goes along with it, not knowing what to say given she has Dipi staying with her. Roxy leaves and Kyle wonders why Sheila didn't try harder to change Roxy's mind.
KYLE: You being mates with Dipi shouldn't rule how you run a business.
SHEILA: Well what else am I supposed to do? I mean, I rostered her and Shane apart and that all backfired.
KYLE: You were really worried about her a couple of days ago.
SHEILA: Yeah but that was before all of this happened.
KYLE: She knows she's done the wrong thing. She's beating herself up over it. I don't think you're giving her a fair go.
SHEILA: What's that supposed to mean?
KYLE: Are you forgetting? You, Clive, Beverly...
SHEILA: Well, that was different. (Off Kyle's dubious look) Wasn't it?
The Waterhole
Paul is doing some work at the bar when Toadie and Karl stop by to see Shane and 'lend a supportive ear'. They tell Shane they've both been through the same rough patch he and Dipi are going through right now. And while every situation is unique, Karl says he wishes he had a friend to give advice when he needed it. Shane doesn't like where this conversation is going.
KARL: Finding forgiveness. It's a very delicate art. It requires subtlety.
TOADIE: Tact.
PAUL: (interjecting) Not to mention a huge slice of humble pie. The thing is, you've got to own your mistake. Just admit that you got carried away by the attention of a young, attractive woman!
KARL: And above all you have to promise, on your life, to never, never let it happen again.
SHANE: Really, Karl? So tell me how many times you've cheated on Susan again?
KARL: (stammering) Well I wasn't really referring to...
SHANE: (butting in) Look, Roxy lent on me for support and then she got confused. Zero infidelity. So thanks, but I haven't joined your little cheaters club.
And with that mic drop, Shane peaces out leaving Karl, Toadie and even Paul quite stunned.
Ramsay Street
Terese finds Roxy packing bags into Hermione's boot. Roxy says she's going to leave and drive up north somewhere, maybe go back to the N.T. Terese says Roxy doesn't have to leave, but Roxy says she's apologised "a zillion times" and resigned from her job, how else can she make things right? But Terese knows running away isn't the answer, and besides, the car isn't hers to take anyway.
TERESE: I understand that Dipi's upset. But come on, honestly, it was just one kiss. People on this street have done far worse, trust me. And think about what you're giving up. Your home here, your friends, your family - is that what you really want?
Roxy shakes her head and says that her Aunty T really knows how to wear a lady down. Sheila pops over to give back Roxy's resignation letter. She's thought it over and doesn't want Roxy to leave; she can start back Monday but her and Shane will still be on separate shifts. Roxy's surprised but relieved and thanks Sheila. Over at #26, Dipi is wheeling a suitcase up the drive. She pauses to stare at Roxy in a hurt manner before heading inside.
Warrinor Prison
Ned stares at the barbed wire fence surrounding the prison before heading inside to the visitor's room. Kane from fight club is led in by a guard and sits down across from Ned.
NED: Kane, thanks for seeing me. I can't have been on the top of your list.
KANE: So what do you want?
Ramsay Street
Dipi is taking more bags to #26 while Yashvi follows, begging her mum not to leave. She tells her mum she can just make Shane sleep on the couch instead, but Dipi says she can't even look at her husband right now. Dipi says she's also doing it so their fighting doesn't become a distraction for Yashvi while she's studying for her exam.
YASHVI: Yeah because my mum moving out is just so calming.
DIPI: I'm only two doors away; you can call me whenever you need.
Gary is watering his front garden and can't help overhear their conversation, especially when Shane appears to also beg Dipi to stay home.
SHANE: We need to talk about this; I need to make it right.
DIPI: It's not about what you want, Shane. I've got to do what's right for me this time.
SHANE: Yeah but if you need space you've got it! You don't need to leave home. Come on, you know that I've never looked sideways at anyone.
DIPI: You're not even hearing me!
YASHVI: Stop arguing! You're supposed to be on the same side!
Shane tries to stop Dipi from heading over to #26, so Gary calls a time out in the hopes that they might calm down somewhat. Getting teary, Shane begs Dipi to stay but she just pushes past him and heads to the Cannings. Concerned, Gary follows her inside and Shane heads back to #30 leaving Yashvi staring after her feuding parents.
Warrinor Prison
Ned asks Kane what Zenin's threats might have meant, then soon realises that Kane doesn't have as much information as he thought. He may have set up the fights but he's still lower on the food chain then Zenin and his cronies. Kane does jog Ned's memory about the time he pulled Bea out of a fight, though, and through a flashback Ned suddenly recalls he saw some boxes being put into a van.
NED: That's what Zenin was worried about, but why? What was in the boxes?
KANE: You've got a problem. These guys, they're hard-core. They don't mess around, especially with people who are connected to the cops. I'm safer in here than you or your girlfriend are.
NED: Yashvi didn't see anything. And neither did I.
KANE: I'm not the one you need to convince.
Ned looks very unsettled by this admission.
