- Susan catching Finn in the middle of the night about to head to #32
Number 32
Elly hears someone come in the door and assumes it's Finn, but is surprised to see Susan instead. Elly tries to play it off innocently except she slips up and mentions Finn has been over in the middle of the night before. Susan isn't impressed and reminds Elly the whole point of her moving out was to distance herself from Finn. Elly starts on about how stressed she is and how "magic" Finn is with Aster, but Susan just takes Aster from Elly and insists her niece get some sleep while she babysits.
Number 28
Finn creeps back into his bedroom, slipping off his shoes and trousers to hop back into bed with Bea. When she stirs, Finn pretends he was up fetching a glass of water. Bea thanks him for being considerate in trying not to wake her. Bea nestles into him, half-asleep, while Finn gives her a kiss on the forehead and looks guilty.
Lassiters Office
Ned finds Chloe fast asleep on her desk and gently shakes her awake. Startled, Chloe asks how late it is, but Ned says it's technically early as he's on the graveyard shift.
CHLOE: Sorry you had to catch me like that.
NED: Eh, could have been worse. You could have been drooling.
Chloe explains she was at an all-day intensive course and now she's way behind on her cost benefit analysis - a detailed enquiry into all of the hotel's departments. Ned's like, 'Yeesh, no wonder you fell asleep', but Chloe's panicking because it's due by 2pm tomorrow, which is now technically that day. She needs to get it done, pronto.
NED: Or...?
CHLOE: Or Lucy realises that she was nuts to give me two weeks to prove myself as GM. And Pierce is forced to admit that he married a Grade-A moron.
NED: Don't say that. He wouldn't have put you in charge if he didn't believe in you.
CHLOE: That's not entirely true and it's kind of a sore point right now.
Chloe adds that Pierce is going to forget what she looks like soon anyway, they've barely spent time together with all their work commitments. Ned commiserates but then Chloe tries to act chipper, promising herself she'll spend time with her husband that evening. Ned smiles and says he'll let her get back to work.
Lassiters Complex
In the more normal hours of the morning, Chloe joins Pierce and Hendrix as they sit outside Harold's having a coffee. She's pleased her all-nighter has resulted in getting her work done - now all she needs to do is proofread the document. Hendrix actually congratulates her instead of disappearing as he usually does. Chloe tells Pierce she wants to make plans with him that night, but Pierce reminds her he's heading to a conference in Cape Schanck. So Pierce suggests they spend time together now - including Hendrix, who cheerfully seems keen for it.
CHLOE: I can't. I have to race home, shower and change and get back to work.
PIERCE: All right, no worries. Well it's good to see you firing on all cylinders.
CHLOE: Just keen to prove myself that's all.
PIERCE: And you're succeeding. Soon everyone will see just how capable you are, and what a natural fit for the role you are.
CHLOE: Okay, you're overdoing it now. Just rein it in a little bit so it sounds like you mean it.
PIERCE: I do mean it. Of course I mean it.
Hendrix clocks the weird vibe between them, and when Chloe leaves he mentions how "weirdly tense" the conversation was. Pierce heads off to buy them breakfast instead of answering.
Harold's Café
Paul swans over while Pierce is paying his bill and mentions the conference Pierce is attending, snarkily wondering whether it's wise to leave Chloe unattended.
PIERCE: She's an adult, Paul. What do you think she's going to do? Invite all her friends around for a party and trash the place?
PAUL: No, worse. I think she's going to run my hotel into the ground with her incompetence.
PIERCE: Our hotel.
Pierce says that leaving Chloe alone will give her the perfect chance to prove herself. Paul bangs on about all the pressure they're under from Head Office and that Lucy doesn't want Chloe in charge anymore than he does. Hendrix emerges from the bathroom in time to hear Paul bag Chloe out some more and isn't impressed.
PAUL: I suppose there is one silver lining to this. When she does fall in a heap we'll be able to employ a proper GM, won't we?
Pierce walks off to his son, but Hendrix wants to know why Paul is acting like such a tool. Pierce says Paul is just stressed but Hendrix replies he doesn't have to take it out on Chloe. Hendrix asks his dad if he's been sticking up for Chloe, but when Pierce's response isn't entirely positive, Hendrix realises that was the cause of the tension earlier. Pierce tells his son he's handling things and not to worry.
Number 28
Karl tells Finn he's worried about Susan not leaving a note before she went on a morning walk. Susan returns and explains to him she's been at #32 most of the night helping Elly with the baby. Susan and Finn swap furtive looks as Susan says she's the best person to help Elly out at the moment. Karl is concerned about Susan's health and doesn't think the late nights will be helping her MS, but Susan says she's fine.
SUSAN: The medication is working wonders, Karl. You know that.
KARL: Could you stop being argumentative! You can't do everything yourself. Now you just relax here; I'm going to run you a bath and I'll make you some breakfast.
SUSAN: Thank you, sweetheart.
Finn sits on the couch with Susan and tries to play everything off as normal, but Susan bluntly tells him she knows about his previous nighttime visit to Elly.
FINN: It was only once.
SUSAN: It doesn't matter, Finn! The problem is that Elly called and you went running. This has to stop for everyone's sake, especially Bea's. Stay away from Elly.
Finn looks properly chastised, but only time will tell if he heeds Susan's warning.
Lassiters Hotel
Ned finds Chloe at the front desk and hopes she's been home since the last time he saw her. Chloe says yes, but only to shower and caffeinate. Ned tells her not to work too hard and to enjoy her night with Pierce. Chloe sighs and says that fell through, so Ned then says she might at least get some sleep with Pierce away.
CHLOE: In the meantime I'm genuinely afraid my husband's going to forget what I look like.
NED: Oh... well, there is an easy enough way to fix that. (Covertly) Vi and I have been sending each other 'photos' while she's away.
CHLOE: (smirking) How spicy are we talking?
NED: That's between me and Vi, but it is fun. Something to think about!
Chloe laughs as Ned walks off, but the idea has taken control of her thoughts. She immediately goes to her office, finds a Polaroid camera in the cupboard, locks the door and starts to undo her shirt.
Number 32 Backyard
David and Aaron are confused about hearing voices last night but Elly tells them she asked Susan to come over and help settle Aster. The boys remind Elly that they're more than happy to help and tell her to wake them any time. Elly feels guilty though; they've already done so much for her. But David says they're looking at it as training in the lead up to eventually having their own baby.
ELLY: You know what, you're right. I do need to stop relying on... Susan so much. But I appreciate it and I will call on you guys more from now on.
The baby starts to cry over the monitor and Aaron immediately leaps up to attend to her, David following close behind as fast as he can with his healing wounds. Elly smiles, happy to have their support.
Lassiters Office
Chloe does up her shirt after finishing her spicy photo shoot and looks at all the Polaroids she's taken. She panics when Paul knocks on the door and quickly hides the photos in an envelope on her desk while shoving the camera behind a couch cushion. Chloe eventually lets Paul in and he wonders why she had the door locked, but Chloe says she didn't want to be interrupted while she was working. He's only there to give her sass about the CBA report not being done, but Chloe retorts that she only has to proof read it before sending it to Lucy.
PAUL: Let's hope it's up to scratch then, hey?
CHLOE: (unbothered) It will be. I look forward to your feedback.
Number 28
Karl yammers on about an article he's reading on alternative uses for cinnamon, but Susan is super tired from looking after Aster all night and keeps yawning, barely listening. Karl says this just proves his point about her working too hard, but Susan says she probably wouldn't have slept much anyway, too much "family stuff" going on in her mind. Finn, who is working at the kitchen table, overhears and looks guilty. Bea emerges from the hallway and says she's going to work on some song lyrics outside, but Finn has another idea. They've both got the day off; they should do something special together. Bea thinks that's a great idea and Susan does too.
Lassiters Office
Pierce drops by with Hendrix to see how Chloe's going, and so he can say goodbye before he heads to the conference. Chloe gets Pierce to have a look at her laptop and while he's preoccupied she slips the envelope of her Polaroids into his bag. This doesn't go unnoticed by Hendrix. But when Pierce starts going on about Chloe being professional and responsible at work she panics and has second thoughts about her photos. She distracts him again so she can steal the pics back and hide them on her desk. Hendrix is intrigued and confused as to what is happening.
Number 32
Karl and Susan pop by to find a very calm household. Elly is reading a magazine on the couch while David and Aaron dote on Aster. Karl heads outside with the boys and the baby leaving Susan and Elly to chat. Elly admits that it's nice having Aaron and David's help, but it's still "not the same".
SUSAN: As your aunty and your sister?
ELLY: Well that, but also if Shaun was still here and things had worked out then maybe we'd be a proper family by now.
SUSAN: It must be hard not to have that. But you can't replace Shaun with Finn.
ELLY: No of course not. I would never act on whatever this is that's going on between us. Bea's my sister, I'd never do that to her.
SUSAN: I wish I could offer you a solution. But at least you've got two willing men here at your beck and call!
Elly smiles and agrees, saying she's going to make the most out of it and have a nap. Susan says that her and Karl won't stay long, they just wanted to make sure Elly and Aster were okay. Elly nods and says Aster is her only priority right now. "I'm going to be the best mum I can and nothing else matters."
Parkland Somewhere
Finn and Bea set up a picnic down by a lake. He asks Bea if she's ever thought about how far they've come, "like the chances of us actually ending up together after everything. It should be impossible and yet here we are." Bea says that sometimes things do seem impossible but then they end up feeling right. Finn kisses Bea and says he loves her. Bea reciprocates but wants to know what's brought all this kind of talk on.
FINN: I don't know. Sometimes things just seem so uncertain, but then I think maybe if we just hold on to each other we'll be okay.
BEA: Yeah of course we will.
They smile at one another.
The Waterhole
Hendrix bumps into Chloe and he says that a few weeks ago he would have made a cocky remark in her presence. Chloe retorts that she probably would have rolled her eyes in return and called him a brat, but it would be weird to do now since they've barely spoken after the wedding. They sit down together and Hendrix admits that's his fault, "I don't really know what to say to you after everything." Chloe says it's her fault too for running around like an insane person to fulfil the GM role. Opening her laptop, she starts to freak out when she realises the latest version of her CBA draft hasn't saved properly. Hendrix asks her if she's got it programmed to AutoSave, or if it's backed up on the Cloud or a USB. Chloe looks sheepish, which means no, so Hendrix says he'll try and help her track down a backup on the main server.
CHLOE: What if it doesn't work? I'm going to have to beg Lucy for mercy. Or move to Botswana and change my name!
HENDRIX: No, you're not going to let Paul win.
Lassiters Office
Cut to a short time later where Hendrix is victorious in finding a backup file last saved half an hour ago. Chloe frets as it's still a lot of work lost - she's not sure if she can salvage things in time for her deadline. But Hendrix turns into her cheer squad and tells her to get cracking on fixing it. He'll stay there with her in case she has more tech issues.
Chloe is triumphant a while later after fixing her document just as Paul saunters in to prematurely gloat. He notes Hendrix sitting there and mocks Chloe for having a high school kid helping her with her work, but Chloe again remains unruffled. Paul reminds her of the deadline just as his phone beeps with an email.
CHLOE: That'll be it now. I CC'd you.
PAUL: (checks his phone) Well, I'll be sure to give it a thorough read through.
CHLOE: (grinning) Enjoy!
PAUL: Don't forget we have that conference-
CHLOE: (interrupting) Conference call at 5. I'll see you then.
Hendrix smirks as Paul leaves and he offers Chloe a high five. Chloe pauses at first, high fives aren't exactly a GM thing, but can't help herself and gives in. Chloe thanks Hendrix for all his help and says it's nice being on the same team again. She invites him to have coffee with her later. Their conversation is halted when Chloe gets a text about a staff issue. Alone in the office, Hendrix can't help but look at the envelope on the desk and is allured by the contents. He quickly pockets one of the photos and runs out.
Parkland Somewhere
Bea tells Finn that her heart goes out to Elly, she didn't realise how much she was struggling. She thinks they should go support Elly, which makes Finn uncomfortable, but Bea says it's sad Elly thinks she has to walk away from her family. She's also worried about Susan and Karl too. Finn smiles and says that it's nice Bea has such a super compassionate nature but he wants her to look after herself as well. Bea grins and replies that's what she's got Finn for. Out of nowhere, Finn gets down on one knee.
BEA: What are you doing?
FINN: (holding her hands) Bea I love you, and I want to take care of you for the rest of your life. Will you marry me?
Bea stares at him, speechless.
