The Waterhole
In the short time Amy's been in the loo, Gary has managed to score a meeting at 10am tomorrow with the photographer David and Aaron used for their wedding. Amy's annoyed that Gary didn't check with her first as she's got a delivery tomorrow, but Gary figures they ought to be full steam ahead with their wedding plans. Amy begrudgingly says she'll try and move the delivery. Having eavesdropped on their conversation, Sheila approaches Gary after Amy leaves and asks if the couple have discussed the "pitter patter of tiny feet" any further. Gary pretends he's warmed to the idea since their previous conversation.
SHEILA: Is that right.
GARY: Yeah, I feel terrible for not being there for Xanthe and Kyle and this is my chance to be a better dad.
SHEILA: Yeah and it's your chance to go through midnight feeds and dirty nappies and toilet training and all that sort of stuff.
GARY: (painting on a smile) Yeah... all the great stuff.
Sheila asks if he's certain about his decision but Gary believes having a baby could be the best thing for him and Amy.
Number 30
Andrea's pleased Toadie let her stay for dinner with Willow and Hugo. Nellyfish, meanwhile, is super keen to get movie night started. Willow volunteers to get the kids bathed and into their PJs to help out Toadie. Andrea makes tracks to leave, but asks Toadie if he knows about any miracle sleeping remedies she can try. She lays it on thick about not being able to sleep after the last round of hypnosis, making Toadie feel guilty enough to invite her to stay for movie night. Andrea's thrilled and says she'll read Hugo a bedtime story before the night gets underway.
Byron Bay
Heather flounces out of a shuttle bus and confidently walks into the Seaside Comfort Motel in Byron Bay. Her quest for answers about Karen/Dee/special appearances by Madeleine West continues.
Number 32
Leo, David, Aaron and Mark are bemused to see Kyle in such a cranky mood. They're surprised (Leo and David in particular) when he tells them that Amy and Gary want to try for a baby. Aaron doesn't think it's the worst news in the world, but Kyle blames him and David for putting the idea in Amy's mind with their baby plans. That's surprise number two for Leo, who smiles and asks since when are David and Aaron having a baby. The boys just sigh at their latest role in the Ramsay Street rumour mill.
Number 22
Terese notices that Paul's in a much better mood than earlier in the day, not realising he's up to shenanigans with Sheila. Speaking of, Sheila pops by and Terese leaves them to chat: "Whatever this is, I'm staying out of it." Sheila's in a tizz about the plans to upset Gary and Amy, especially since Kyle's decided he's leaving town again, and wants to know when they're making their move. Paul tells her to bide her time, but gets an idea on how to make Gary and Amy question their suitability as a couple when Sheila mentions that the pair have an important meeting in the morning.
Number 30/Seaside Comfort Motel
Willow's rom-com movie finishes and she wants Toadie to admit it was awesome, but Toadie jokes it was no Love Actually. The two of them notice Andrea's fallen asleep on the couch. Willow asks if they should wake her up but Toadie says (with a bit of uncertainty) that Andrea's had trouble sleeping lately so they should leave her be. Willow thanks Toadie for letting Andrea hang around, she knows it can't be easy on him and she appreciates it. They hug goodnight and Toadie switches the lights off. When it's quiet, a fully awake Andrea cracks her eyes open and smirks to herself.
The next morning, while everyone's still in bed, Andrea calls her mum.
ANDREA: I know it's early but I just had to tell you I'm at Toadie's. I slept over!
HEATHER: (gasps in delight) Did ya boof him?
ANDREA: No! I'm on the couch; get your mind out of the gutter.
Heather wants to know more details, but Andrea's distracted by sounds she can hear in the background, "like waves or something." Heather panics and tries to shush the ocean (!) before pretending that she's standing near the window in Andrea's apartment and trees are rustling. Heather gets off the phone as fast as she can so Andrea's suspicions aren't aroused further. She's keen to start her search for Karen.
Harold's Café
Over breakfast, David and Aaron have finally managed to convince Amy and Leo that they haven't been talking about having a baby.
AMY: So what were you talking about?
DAVID: It's a bit controversial.
LEO: Now we really want to know, come on!
DAVID: Yeah and you will soon, but we're not ready to share it yet.
And on that mysterious note, Aaron goes to the counter to get them all more coffees. David hopes that Amy's decision to have a baby wasn't influenced by them but Amy says she's always wanted another kid; she's just never been in the right relationship. Leo says that Kyle was a bit put out by the news, "seeing as he'll have a little brother or sister." Amy can't help but look wildly freaked out by that and heads off to her appointment. She runs into Paul on the way out.
PAUL: I do not want you making the same mistake twice.
AMY: By mistake do you mean Jimmy?
PAUL: I'm not talking about actually having a child; I'm talking about your choice of father. Come on, everything you went through with Liam...
AMY: Gary is totally different to Liam.
PAUL: Oh really? He's lied to you, he's not very good with money, oh, and wait for it, he's let you down time and time again.
AMY: I need to get to a meeting.
PAUL: Hey, I would love it if you had another child if that's what you really want. But you deserve someone you can rely on this time and that's not Gary.
AMY: (gives him a sarcastic thumbs up) Good to know.
The Waterhole
Gary's annoyed his mum's got him moving stuff into the stock room when he's on his way to an important meeting. Sheila pretends he's her only option and, after breezily mentioning that the lock's playing up on the door, proceeds to covertly lock her son in the room. She looks guilty as he calls out to her for help but she still walks away. Gary tries calling Sheila on his phone but there's no reception.
Harold's Café
Kyle gets a text from Paul and soon heads out in a huff to clean out the tram. Mark, David and Aaron can all see that Kyle's clearly in a mood about Amy, and Mark comments that Kyle's probably more upset than he should be.
Byron Bay
Heather's on the phone to Ian, thanking him for his lead on 'Rachel', who may know something about Karen. Rachel soon arrives and it becomes clear that Ian used to sell crystals in her café years ago. Heather pretends she's looking for her missing niece, Karen, and shows Rachel a photo of her.
HEATHER: Ian said he put her in touch with you when you had your café. I know it's a long shot but even the smallest piece of information would be welcome.
RACHEL: I don't recognise the face. But I vaguely recall her phoning... Yeah, a friend of Ian's, yes!
HEATHER: You didn't meet in person?
RACHEL: No, we arranged a job interview and some guy showed up on her behalf.
HEATHER: Do you recall his name?
RACHEL: Rick? Ryan? He asked loads of questions about how safe the café was and insisted I call him instead of Karen if a job came up.
HEATHER: That's very strange.
RACHEL: Yeah, that's the reason it stuck in my memory.
Heather asks if Rachel still has his number. She says no, but then thinks the new café owner, Tanya, might have kept the book of contact numbers she had. Heather's pleased when Rachel offers to call Tanya for her.
Power Road
Amy arrives back at work and leaves another voicemail for Gary. She's annoyed he left her to deal with the photographer on her own after not showing up. Amy spies Kyle in the tram and goes over to talk to him. She offers to help him out, but Kyle suggests Amy check out the refurbishment of Grease Monkeys and the new bottle shop instead.
AMY: Leo told me you weren't feeling that great last night.
KYLE: And?
AMY: And, um, I was wondering if you're doing any better?
KYLE: Not really, Amy, no.
AMY: Is it because of what I said?
KYLE: It's because of everything. I'm not happy with the way things have turned out, and I hate the fact that you just keep coming and checking up on me all the time.
AMY: I'm only doing it because I care about you!
KYLE: Yeah I know you care. I care about you. Too much. I can't be around you.
Kyle goes back into the tram. Amy can't help but look conflicted.
Number 30
Andrea thanks Toadie for letting her stay on the couch last night before heading over to hang out with Willow and the kids. Susan pops over and is surprised to learn what transpired with Andrea. Susan takes Toadie aside and airs her concerns, but Toadie says he feels guilty about the hypnosis sessions and let her stay since she's had trouble sleeping.
SUSAN: I appreciate that Andrea's trying to reconnect with her kids, and that's fine. Just as long as you're keeping her at arm's length.
TOADIE: You don't have to worry about that.
Susan doesn't look too sure.
Byron Bay
Heather takes a swig out of her flask before Tanya, from Fish Heads Café, arrives back with her book of contacts. Tanya locates the section for potential casual employees in 2012 and hunts for a guy beginning with 'R'. Heather knows Tanya is definitely on her side when she says she sympathises with Karen.
TANYA: You know, this guy could be the reason why she's missing.
HEATHER: Yes, that's our worst nightmare.
TANYA: I was in a toxic relationship once. I was lucky to get out. (Heather feigns sympathy for her) Here, here's the name Karen with a work number for Riley.
Heather's stoked and when she's stored the number in her phone, Tanya leaves her to her business. Heather makes the call and hits the jackpot - she's found Riley.
The Waterhole
Gary is scoffing down a bag of chips when Sheila finally lets him out of the storeroom, pretending she had no idea he was in there. Gary barrels out, panicking about leaving Amy in the lurch. Amy just so happens to be in the bar when Gary emerges and he apologises, explaining his predicament, but Amy's not in the mood to listen. "Why do these things keep happening to you, Gary?" She leaves and Paul smirks in the background, while Sheila looks somewhat guilty.
Lassiter's Complex
Susan and Finn heap compliments on Bea because she's going to be performing at the upcoming music festival. Talk then turns to Finn working at the Community Centre. He's keen to teach more classes, but Susan reminds him to check in with Toadie. Finn's just stoked Toadie is giving him the time of day at all considering their past.
SUSAN: Well you're earning his trust. I just wish he wasn't quite so generous with others.
BEA: Who are we talking about?
SUSAN: Andrea. I'm just worried that he's giving her too much leeway too soon.
FINN: Wasn't that what people were saying to you about me?
SUSAN: It's not the same. Andrea is still Andrea.
Byron Bay
It's Park Bench Guy! And he's sitting on another bench! Although this time he's alone and not in the company of an ethereal-looking Special Appearance by Madeleine West. Heather soon arrives and greets him as Riley, but old mate Riley is very evasive when Heather starts talking about Karen.
RILEY: I don't know anyone called Karen, sorry.
HEATHER: Oh, silly me. Or... silly you. Because if you don't know Karen, how is it that you're standing next to her in that photo?
She shows him the picture of Ian, 'Karen' and himself on her phone. Riley keeps quiet but Heather (and the rest of us) expects some answers, stat.
