Elly is having a go at Mark for standing her up.
ELLY: You promised you wouldn't come here – not without telling me first.
MARK: I know. I should've.
ELLY: I waited for you at the reception venue with Aaron. When you didn't turn up, I called the station; there was no training.
Mark claims that he meant to be there, but that time got away from him.
ELLY: I am trying to understand! I know that you are worried about Sonya, and it's making you stressed about the wedding. But everything you're doing is making me believe you don't want to get married.
MARK: Elly –
ELLY: You're making me feel like I'm dragging you to the altar. I won't do that, Mark – I won't.
She walks off.
Sonya, Toadie, Nell and Hugo are waiting for Callum and Yashvi to get back from the airport from picking up Sonya's sister, Jade, who is flying in from San Francisco to join them on their beach house holiday. Toadie asks Sonya if Callum's told her what he's doing at work at the moment; Sonya says no. Toadie admits he doesn't understand what he's talking about most of the time.
TOADIE: It's just, like, this fog of buzzwords. But I'd still like to know what he's doing, you know?
SONYA: Yeah. Well, I'm sure there'll be plenty of time to talk about it when we get to the beach house.
At that moment, Callum and Yashvi arrive, with Jade. Jade gives Nell a big hug, then has a very emotional reunion with Sonya.
JADE: I have missed you so much.
SONYA: Yeah, I've missed you – I've missed you.
Chloe is about to whip her and Mel up a batch of ‘Chlo- jitos', when Mel gets a call from a client called Peter. She tells him she's had another offer on the lot he's considering, so if he's keen, she suggests he make a move before it's snapped up. Afterwards, Mel turns down the Chlo- jito, saying she has to work today. Chloe tells her she's no fun.
Mel says that if she wants to make her new business successful, she needs to start talking to local homeowners – and she's going to start with Sheila at No 26!
CHLOE: I didn't know Sheila was thinking of selling?
MEL: She's not. But I'm building relationships across Erinsborough. So that when the time does come to sell, I'm the first girl they come to.
CHLOE: ‘Hustler' still a number one attribute on your CV?
MEL: Mm, I love it. Love the game – making promises, playing people off against each other.
CHLOE: Anything to land the deal, huh?
MEL: Mm. You'd love seeing me in action.
But Chloe looks worried as Mel leaves the room.
Jade and Sonya are lying on Sonya's bed.
SONYA: Thank you for coming all this way.
JADE: Oh, stop – you know I wouldn't have missed it for anything.
SONYA: How's your business going?
JADE: Yeah, it's in good hands. My staff have been with me for ages (…) Setting myself up over there was the right move, but – oh, man, I am so happy to be home, and spending time with you guys, and the kids.
They talk about the beach house trip – Jade's going to leave in the morning with the kids, and she and Toadie will come later, after she's had her check- up at the hospital.
JADE: Okay. But when you arrive, you are doing nothing – I am going to spoil you rotten.
SONYA: Thank you, I really appreciate that. But you're gonna have your hands full with the kids.
JADE: Excuse me, I am the sandcastle queen! I've got this covered.
SONYA: Well, if you're worried about Hugo, don't be, cos Cal's really good with him. So you're not gonna have to change any nappies.
JADE: Good… It must be so much easier, now that you've got full custody. You know, I can't imagine how full- on that must have been – seeing Andrea, and getting her to agree.
Sonya's smile fades, as she flashes back to seeing ‘Andrea' through the blinds at the hospital in Hobart. Jade asks Sonya about possible complementary treatments to help with the chemo, but Sonya is distracted. Jade offers to hold a mindfulness session for the whole family to get some good energy flowing.
Elly is chatting to Aaron about the Mark situation. Aaron's sure that Mark regrets lying to Elly.
ELLY: I'm just sick of feeling this way. I'm so excluded and alone. And we're meant to be partners, yet the only thing we share is a bed. I'm starting to think this wedding's a bad idea. There's been so many issues in the lead- up…
AARON: Right. But they're not just with Mark, though. Maybe this whole mess with Chloe is psyching you out?
ELLY: There's no mess with Chloe! She agreed to be my bridesmaid – end of story!
AARON: Look, Elly, I'm just pointing out there've been other issues leading up to this wedding that could be adding to the stress you're feeling.
ELLY: No! This is entirely about Mark, okay? Every signal is pointing that he doesn't want to marry me, but he's too scared to tell me.
AARON: Elly, Mark loves you. More than anything – I know he does.
Jade is running a mindfulness session for Sonya, Toadie, Callum and Yashvi.
JADE: Let go of your thoughts, and empty your minds. I want you to focus solely on the rhythm of your breath as you inhale…
Yashvi and Callum exchange a cheeky glance – they aren't taking it altogether seriously.
JADE: … Let it fill your body and, as you exhale, let it flow out into the universe (…) Just let go of any negative thoughts you've been holding onto…
We home in on Sonya.
JADE: … petty things, like misunderstandings, jealousies… Secrets are very toxic, so we just want to expel that. Now, I'd like you to picture someone you've been harbouring ill feelings towards.
Sonya has a momentary flashback to ‘Andrea' in the psych ward.
JADE: Now, just imagine that negativity just floating away…
And we're back in the ward. Sonya has given ‘Andrea' the custody papers for Hugo.
‘ANDREA': I'll sign.
She begins to sign the papers.
‘ANDREA': But there's something that Jarrod needs to know.
Back in the present, Sonya looks troubled as Jade's mindfulness session continues…
Sonya approaches Mark as he's getting out of his car. He says ‘hey' but is very standoffish; he can barely look at Sonya.
SONYA: Do you have a sec? I actually just need your advice on something.
MARK: Uh, not right now, no.
SONYA: Are you alright?
MARK: Yeah, I've just got a bit on.
MARK: Um, I just, err…
SONYA: That's okay. That's alright. Maybe just come over and see me later?
But Mark is already walking towards his drive, and doesn't even reply to Sonya, who turns around and goes home. Aaron has witnessed all this, and asks Mark why he blew Sonya off.
MARK: I didn't.
AARON: You did. You're being a jerk! Especially to your fiancée. You know you stood her up today, and now she thinks you don't even want to marry her?
MARK: Of course I want to marry her.
AARON: Well, that's not what it looks like! You're giving her all these signals saying that you're going to bail.
MARK: I don't mean to. My head's all over the place.
AARON: Mark, I'm your brother. Talk to me.
MARK: … When I was in Witness Protection™, all I could ever do was think about my old life. I went from having everything, to having nothing, living in rural New South Wales.
AARON: In the Blue Mountains?
MARK: No, it was in the outback. I spent some time there while they were trying to find me some place more permanent. I'm about to marry the woman that I love, and all that I can think about is running back there.
AARON: It's cold feet.
MARK: No. No, it's not that. Although I know that's how it sounds. That's why I can't explain that to Elly.
Callum and Yashvi are preparing to make some biccies. (We're hoping that Nanny Alice's special icing has been found and binned by this stage!)
CALLUM: This biscuit dough is looking way too healthy to me.
YASHVI: Mm. Mushy bananas, rolled oats and dates. More like a shower grout.
Callum checks out some apps to see if they can find a recipe that ‘doesn't make us want to chuck'.
YASHVI: What app are you working on now, anyway?
CALLUM: It's, err, confidential. I can't talk about it.
YASHVI: I reckon it'd be easy. We need, like, a food tester app, where you can take a photo of your dinner, and it will tell you if it's gonna be gross or not.
CALLUM: Yeah, look, I think that technology doesn't really exist.
YASHVI: Or, a name generator for desserts. I reckon this would be sludge sundae.
CALLUM: Hilarious (!)
YASHVI: Oh, I know! What about an app that shares your food disasters with abstract painters for inspiration? Coming up with apps is so easy!
Callum has been looking increasingly annoyed.
CALLUM: Yeah, it's *really* easy – you know, anybody could do it (!) You could do it – especially with all those terrible ideas!
He storms off, and Yashvi says ‘ouch!'
Later, Sonya comes in and finds Jade on the sofa. Sonya explains that she tried to talk to Mark about something, but that he wasn't in a good way.
SONYA: He could barely look me in the face, and – I dunno – it kind of feels like maybe he's been avoiding me.
JADE: Well, you know – some people, they find it hard to see their loved ones sick or going through pain. And they back off because they don't know what to say.
SONYA: Mm. Yeah, I know.
JADE: And you know what Mark's like. I mean, he's one of those self- contained people. He retreats into himself. This thing that you wanted to talk to him about – was that about Andrea?
SONYA: Mm- hm.
JADE: Is there something I can do to help?
SONYA: No, it's okay.
JADE: Surely there's someone else who can?
Sonya looks thoughtful.
Chloe is outside Grease Monkeys, looking across at Fitzgerald Motors where Bea is working. She looks worried. Mel comes out of Grease Monkeys, where she's been talking to the owners.
MEL: It is in the bag. I reckon the owners'll want to sell by close of business today.
CHLOE: Why so confident?
MEL: Because their marriage is on the rocks, and I've been pitting them against each other.
MEL: My guess is they'll have a huge argument any minute, and they'll both sign before they get a chance to cool down. Which means I'll get my sale.
CHLOE: That can't be ethical.
MEL: Other estate agents do way worse.
Chloe again glances uncertainly over at the garage, and Bea.
MEL: You don't get far in life if you keep worrying about other people. She'll be fine.
But as Mel walks away, Chloe appears to have had a revelation…
Mark walks up the gazebo, and has a flashback to a fateful time he was here with Kate.
KATE: I love you.
Kate drops to her knees; and in the present, Mark looks traumatised. He sits on the bench and scrolls through photos on his phone, starting with one of Dipi, Shane, Toadie and Sonya. He zooms in on Sonya, looks mournful, and looks at another picture of her. He then swipes to a picture of himself kissing Elly, and another picture of Elly. He looks conflicted.
Aaron and Chloe are chatting about Mark; she can't believe he would ‘do that' to Elly, and Aaron agrees that he has a lot of ground to make up. Bea comes in, and Chloe asks how her job hunt is going; Bea says ‘not great', and Chloe looks guilty. She tells Bea she's sure something will come up.
BEA: I doubt it. My last place of employment sunk, and then literally went up in flames. And it doesn't matter that it was a faulty power board; I still look unprofessional.
AARON: Hey, this power board – you know, the one at our place was sparking the other day when I was vacuuming. Mel threw it out. I wonder if Mark bought a few cheap and nasty power boards and used one of them at the garage?
BEA: Well, it's possible. I have no idea where that one came from.
AARON: Jeez, how lucky are we? If it wasn't thanks to Mel, our place could've gone up in flames too!
But Chloe and Bea glance at one another, both deep in thought…
Mark finds Elly sitting outside the hotel.
MARK: I shouldn't have gone to Kate's grave. I should have gone to you.
ELLY: You made a promise to me and you broke it. I want to know why.
MARK: … I'm afraid of losing you. I've lost someone before, and I can't stand the thought of that happening again.
ELLY: Is Sonya's illness what's triggering this?
ELLY: And it's making you pull away?
MARK: Yeah. From her, and from you.
ELLY: Shutting yourself off from everyone won't help you. In fact, it's the fastest way to lose all the people you love. Do you have any idea how hurtful that was, when you did the disappearing act?
MARK: I know. And I feel awful for putting you through this.
ELLY: So, then, don't do it! When you love people, there's always a chance that you'll get hurt. But if you run away before that, then it's a certainty.
MARK: I don't want to throw away what we have.
ELLY: No, neither do I.
They kiss. Mark tells Elly that the sergeant has given him time off next week to help her with the wedding prep. He also suggests they ‘make a head start on our honeymoon' tonight. Elly seems placated, and they kiss again. But there then follows a Worried Hug™, during which she doesn't look so happy…
Sonya and Jade are on the sofa, and Yashvi and Callum in the kitchen, when Dipi and Shane arrive – and are pleased to meet Jade for the first time. Toadie comes in, then, and greets them all too. Dipi quietly says to Jade that having her back must be a huge morale boost for Sonya.
Shane had meant to fetch a sun- shade over for Toadie and Sonya to take with them on their trip, so Toadie asks Yashvi or Callum to get it. Yashvi volunteers, and asks Callum if he'll come with her, but he coldly tells her she'll manage.
TOADIE: What's that about?
Toadie looks suspicious. Shane tells Toadie he'll mow his lawn and fix his leaky tap while they're away.
SHANE: If there's anything else that needs doing, just let me know.
This triggers another flashback for Sonya, to the psych ward.
‘ANDREA': There's something Toadie needs to know.
Back in the present, Sonya asks Shane if he can help her grab some flowers for the table from outside. He agrees, and they head out of the front door.
Chloe is on the sofa, looking worried. Mel comes in.
MEL: Bring on the Chlo- jitos, babe – I had a big win today. I got the Grease Monkeys sale, and the antiques store, too.
CHLOE: (…) So I guess you'll be raking it in, now Robinson Pines owns Power Road?
MEL: Well, Paul's the real winner – but I'll be happy to accept the commissions. Plus all the ones from the additional house sales.
CHLOE: None of this would've happened if Lucas hadn't agreed to sell the garage, though, right?
CHLOE: So, the fire was pretty convenient?
MEL: Why am I getting the third degree?
CHLOE: … Az told me about the faulty power board that you threw out here. The one that was sparking. I think you took it to the garage, and plugged it in so it would start the fire.
A tired- looking Sonya is on the front lawn, looking at the roses in her garden. Her vision seems to be blurring, and a headache is coming on. Shane presents her with some flowers he's collected for the table, but can see she's struggling.
SHANE: You okay? Want me to get Toad?
She smiles at him.
SONYA: I have to tell you something. It's been weighing on my mind, and I just… I can't keep it to myself any longer.
SONYA: Something happened, when I went and saw Andrea.
SONYA: No, please – please, listen to me. She said something, and at first I thought it was a lie. But I'm beginning to think that maybe it was true.
SHANE: Shouldn't you be talking to Toadie about this?
SONYA: Yeah. And I will, if I have to. But right now, I just need you, and your advice, okay? Andrea just said something really strange.
We flash back to Andrea's room at the hospital.
‘ANDREA': There's something that Jarrod needs to know. It's about Dee.
Sonya smiles cynically, and after ‘Andrea' finishes signing the custody papers, takes them from her and looks at them, sustaining an air of disinterest in what ‘Andrea' is saying.
‘ANDREA': So, I'd just arrived in Tasmania, okay? Find myself at the Salamanca Markets. This man comes up to me – convinced he knows me.
SONYA: Yep, okay. So where are you going with this?
‘ANDREA': So, I've never been to Tasmania before. This guy – he says my name's Karen. He must've met someone who looked like me.
‘ANDREA': What if he met Dee?
