Warehouse
Gary is lying unconscious on the floor. Amy turns up to see him, and is shocked to find him injured. She tries to wake him up, and he begins to respond...
No 30
Sonya's on the phone to one of her staff from the nursery, asking if they can fill in for Gary as he hasn't turned up for his shift. Toadie comes in with Hugo; Sonya is cooking something, and Toadie offers to take over.
SONYA: Beats helping Nell decide what to wear.
TOADIE: Ah, the joys of owning too many tutus!
SONYA: Oh, sweetie, you've been saving that one up, haven't you?
TOADIE: Yeah, it's quite a relief to get it out, actually.
SONYA: I'm so happy for you!
Sonya remarks that it was nice to see Toadie and Karl getting on better last night.
TOADIE: Today's all about you, alright? That's the only thing I'm focused on.
SONYA: Yeah. It's all just weird, you know - the idea of people coming together to essentially give us money.
Toadie says he felt the same when he had a fundraiser back in the day.
TOADIE: But you've got to think of it as like a big group hug. Everyone just wants to help out.
Toadie asks if they should bring Nell and Hugo to the fundraiser, but Sonya wants to keep them out of it for as long as they can, and Toadie agrees. Nell comes in with a load of picture books to read at the babysitter's - Sonya suggests she just pick her favourite.
NELL: But I love all of them!
TOADIE: Oh, looks like we've got a reader on our hands!
SONYA: Well, she gets that from me.
TOADIE: Yeah, well, she gets the fashion sense from me, though.
SONYA: I'm happy for you to have that one, Jarrod.
Toadie and Nell high-five, and then Toadie high-fives an amused Hugo too, with a fist-bump for good measure!
No 24
Mark is irritable as he, Aaron and Elly prepare to leave for the fundraiser. Elly tells him to relax; they have plenty of time before it starts. But Mark wants to get there early to help set up. Elly suggests that she and Mark walk to the pub so they can talk about how he's feeling about Sonya. But Mark irritably says he wants to drive, so as to get there ASAP. Elly and Aaron look worriedly at each other.
The Waterhole
Sheila, Karl and Dipi are at the bar; Karl is kickstarting the donations in the spare change bucket that Dipi has organised as part of the fundraiser! Sonya and Toadie arrive, and it's immediately awkward - but Toadie is able to muster up a 'we're grateful' to Karl for all his efforts.
Not detecting much feeling in it, an awkward Karl heads to the Flametree Retreat to pick up some vouchers Steph has organised for the fundraiser. Once he's gone, Sonya gives Toadie a gentle telling-off about his attitude towards Karl.
SONYA: Come on - what happened to moving on?
TOADIE: I'm trying.
SONYA: I know. I know you think you are, but you have to forgive him, okay? We need him.
Toadie doesn't reply, and wanders off. Sonya asks Sheila if Gary has been in, as he didn't show up for his nursery shift. Sheila is outraged on Sonya's behalf, assuming he's overslept, and immediately goes to call Gary to hector him about it.
Erinsborough Hospital
Gary is in a hospital bed, feeling sorry for himself for being a walking disaster area. He says he's fine now, and begins to repeat the mantra about Cannings being made of tough stuff - but Amy stops him, making it clear how serious head injuries are. It's clear how worried she's been.
AMY: Seeing you like that, I - I thought of the worst.
Clive turns up to see how Gary's doing, having seen his name on the board. Clive says it's good that he's lucid, but he won't be discharged until he's fully in the clear. He asks if Sheila is on her way; Gary realises he hasn't told her he's here yet - and also that he's supposed to be at work at the nursery. Clive says he won't be thinking straight after his bump on the head, and goes to call Sheila.
GARY: Oh, she's gonna chuck that bloody book at me!
The Waterhole
Karl is presiding over a charity auction at the fundraiser; among the attendees are Sonya, Toadie, Shane, Dipi, Yashvi, Kirsha, Mark, Aaron and Elly. He begins to take bids for a gourmet hamper, donated by The Waterhole. Toadie bids $20, Dipi $30, Kirsha $31.50, Shane $40, and Aaron $75. Mark outbids them all with $100 - then Karl puts in his own bid of $150!
KARL: Going once, going twice...
MARK: Two hundred!
KARL: And we have two hundred - and I suspect that that's going to do it! So, well done - you win a glorious gourmet hamper, to be shared of course -
MYSTERY VOICE FROM THE BACK: One thousand!
Stunned silence as people look around to try and see who the bidder is, but only an arm is visible! Sure enough, the $1,000 bid wins - and the bidder emerges, looking emotional. It's Callum. Sonya's smile fades...
After the break, Callum wonders if Sonya is ever going to stop hugging him! Toadie then takes his turn. Cal explains that things were a bit quiet at work, so he thought he'd come and surprise them, seeing as he missed Christmas.
CALLUM: Except I'm the one that got the surprise. I checked Twitter when I got off the plane, and Piper had posted about this.
SONYA: I'm so sorry you found out this way, sweetie.
TOADIE: That was never our intention.
CALLUM: Doesn't matter how I found out, okay? I'm here, and I'm here to help.
We see Dipi, Shane and their girls looking worried.
CALLUM: What can I do for you?
SONYA: Just having you here's enough, okay?
She hugs him again, and Toadie joins them for an emotional group hug.
Erinsborough Hospital
Clive tells Gary that his scans have come back; there are no internal injuries, and just a mild concussion, so he must take things easy. Sheila bustles in with a 'Gary Francis Xavier Canning' and demands to know what Gary has 'done to himself'. Gary says he's fine.
SHEILA: Well, why is the cavalry here - and why did I have to hear about this from Clive?! I should've been rung the minute you were brought in!
Amy hastily exits with Clive to get some coffees.
SHEILA: That girl thinks she can pop in and out of your life whenever it suits her! She is playing with your emotions and you're letting her!
Gary explains that it was Amy who found him at the warehouse - and reassures Sheila that his 'noggin was built for knocking'!
The Waterhole
Sonya admits to a confused Callum that they didn't tell anyone about her illness at first - she just wanted 'more time being me' before she started being seen as 'sick Sonya'. Callum's still nonplussed as to why he wasn't told; Sonya claims she didn't want him to worry. She asks when he's heading back to the US to get back to work; he doesn't want to talk about that - not today.
Cal asks Sonya how her chemo treatment's going.
CALLUM: Be honest.
SONYA: Well, I've done two cycles, and it's tough, yeah? But I'm tougher.
CALLUM: I believe you.
They hold hands and smile. We cut to the bar, where Toadie is chatting to Dipi, Yashvi and Kirsha. Karl turns up with the vouchers for the Flametree from Steph; the winner wanted to donate the vouchers back to Sonya. Toadie awkwardly thanks Karl and promises to pass them on. Karl goes to walk away.
TOADIE: Karl? Thank you very much for everything you've done today. This fundraiser means a great deal to us, and it wouldn't have happened without you.
KARL: You don't owe me any thanks.
TOADIE: Yes, I do. I might still be upset with you, but I know I owe you a lot.
Toadie turns away, and Karl looks sad.
Erinsborough Hospital
Sheila is hectoring Gary about his boss at the warehouse running an unsafe workplace; and on top of that, the manager's been on the phone giving Gary earache about the mess he left with the boxes after his accident!
AMY: As in, the boxes that fell on you and nearly killed you?!
But Gary says the boss had a point; he was too tired to work, and wasn't following procedure. He's worried he won't have a job when he gets out, but Sheila says he doesn't want to work for that kind of employer anyway - Gary should look for something else.
AMY: If he wants to.
SHEILA: Of course he does!
AMY: Don't you think that this could be a sign that he's working too hard? I mean, three jobs is a lot!
SHEILA: Aren't you supposed to be back at Sonya's fundraiser?
AMY: No, they don't need me.
SHEILA: Well, I just think it's very confusing, you being here. I think what Gary needs now is someone who's dedicated completely to him, and consistent.
AMY: ... Yeah, if you're sure you're okay?
SHEILA: Why wouldn't he be?
Gary thus prevented from speaking for himself, Amy leaves reluctantly, while Sheila smiles smugly.
The Waterhole
Dipi is chatting to Callum. Sonya joins them; Dipi says it's so good that Callum is here, as family support is important at a time like this, and she hasn't seen Sonya happier in days. Sonya admits that everyone's efforts and generosity with the fundraiser have given her strength. Callum retrieves a present for Sonya from his bag - he's bought her some crystals from a 'hippie shop' in the US.
CALLUM: I don't believe in this stuff, but I know that you do.
SONYA: I thought you said you didn't know about my cancer until you landed in Melbourne.
CALLUM: ... I did say that, didn't I?
SONYA: Callum, what's going on?
CALLUM: Okay, look - I got a flight here cos I heard about your diagnosis.
SONYA: Someone tell you? Who? Who was it?
But Callum isn't saying.
Outside in the beer garden, Aaron and Amy are gossiping about Chloe and Mel's new relationship. Amy doesn't seem very keen on Mel from working with her, but says she's not one to comment on other people's relationships.
AARON: Stop it! You're allowed an opinion.
AMY: Tell that to Sheila.
She moans about how Sheila keeps stepping in and pushing her away whenever she tries to be there for Gary. Aaron asks if Amy still has Feelings™ for Gary.
AMY: I didn't end things because the Feelings™ went away.
AARON: So are you gonna jump back in?
AMY: I guess there's still a chance we could get back together.
AARON: What's stopping you?
AMY: He needs to turn his life around.
AARON: Hold on - I thought that's what Sheila wants for him too?
AMY: That's the problem. She thinks she needs to fix him, and he's letting her. Don't you think he should be the one to make the change himself?
Aaron tells Amy that she's still Gary's friend; if she thinks Sheila's behaviour isn't in Gary's best interests, then she should definitely go and say something.
Erinsborough Hospital
Sheila moans to Clive about Amy implying that she's working Gary into the ground. She says she's only intervening for Amy anyway, as they both want Gary 'whipped into shape'. Clive gently suggests that some of Sheila's anger towards Amy may be misdirected, and that she's just shocked at seeing Gary in a hospital bed.
CLIVE: Plus, you're forgetting something.
SHEILA: What's that?
CLIVE: You like Amy!
SHEILA: Oh -
CLIVE: You want her and Gary to work out - you do! So fighting with her is just gonna push her away.
Clive suggests Sheila go find Amy and clear the air, while he keeps an eye on Gary.
Lassiter's Complex
Yashvi and Callum are sitting by the pond.
YASHVI: So, the golden boy's back in the country?
CALLUM: Golden boy? Please! I am the black sheep.
YASHVI: No, I'm pretty sure I've got that title.
CALLUM: Why - cos you lit a few fireworks? No, no - trust me. I am, and always will be, the black sheep of the Rebecchi family.
YASHVI: You want to thumb-wrestle over it?
CALLUM: Well, there's no need. You know I smashed up Dad's office once?
YASHVI: Yeah, when?
CALLUM: Shortly before I smashed up a car. Have you ever stolen dozens of phones? Been on a hunger strike? Had the whole neighbourhood think you lit a bushfire?
YASHVI: ...
CALLUM: Yeah. Until you get sent to a literal farm to straighten out, you'll never be the black sheep.
YASHVI: Okay. Clearly we have a lot to talk about.
Sonya turns up, and asks if Callum's avoiding her. He denies it, but Sonya is determined to know who told Callum that she was ill. He continues to refuse to say, so Sonya starts to guess - asking if it was Toadie.
CALLUM: I'm not saying.
SONYA: This was my news to tell. I really thought he understood that.
CALLUM: Just please be happy that I'm here.
SONYA: Of course I'm happy that you're here! But he had no right to tell you!
Sonya goes off inside to confront Toadie, despite Callum's protests.
Meanwhile, Sheila is getting out of her car in the car park, when Amy turns up. Sheila admits she went a bit far earlier. Amy agrees, and says it's not fair!
AMY: I don't want to be fighting with you. You're like family, and I love you. But the way you're putting yourself in the middle of my issues with Gary - it's not your place.
SHEILA: Yeah, but I've got your best interests at heart.
AMY: I'm sure you do, but... you're not helping.
SHEILA: Look, I know you think that Gary can do this on his own. But you're wrong. My methods are getting results; it's all mapped out in 'Mother Knows Best'.
AMY: Have you ever considered that maybe you and that book are doing more harm than good?
SHEILA: I am his mother, and I've known what he's needed all my life. If you think I'm gonna stop that now, you're very sadly mistaken.
Sheila storms off, and Amy looks exasperated.
Erinsborough Hospital
Amy turns up to visit Gary, who's still in bed. She tells him a bit about the fundraiser and Callum turning up, and then says...
AMY: I don't really have a reason to visit. I just wanted to see you.
GARY: ...
AMY: And to warn you - I may have made things worse with Sheila. I wanted to work out the tension between us, but I only riled her up even more.
GARY: She'll bounce back.
AMY: Maybe I shouldn't have said anything. But I just think you're working too hard.
Gary says he's taken that on board, and decided that two jobs is more than enough; he'll just pay Amy back at a reasonable rate, and Sheila will have to wear it. Amy shouldn't stress.
AMY: I only stress because I care. A lot.
A tense silence, before Amy gets cold feet, and says she'd better let Gary rest. She rushes off, leaving him looking frustrated.
The Waterhole
The fundraiser is still ongoing; Shane reckons a lot of money has been raised, and Dipi hopes it's enough to save the nursery. But Sonya is still looking annoyed about Callum having been told about her illness. Toadie comes in, ready to shout Callum a drink for his surprise appearance. But Sonya accuses Toadie of having told Callum about her cancer behind her back. He swears he didn't.
SONYA: See, I want to believe you - but you've done this before. You called Callum last time I had my relapse.
Seeing tension brewing, Dipi interrupts - and admits that she was in fact the one who told Callum the truth. She called him for help with Kirsha's technology project, and he kept asking how Sonya was as he hadn't heard from her following the poisoning.
DIPI: It just broke my heart that he didn't know what was going on -
SONYA: I made it very, very clear that I didn't want him to know!
DIPI: I know! I just blurted it out - I'm so sorry.
SONYA: No - protecting my children was the one thing that I asked for! And I can't -
But before she can say any more, Sonya's legs give way. Toadie catches her, and she stands again, tetchily insisting that she's okay. She walks off, followed by Toadie, and Dipi looks upset.
