As their conversation continues, Elly says she understands where Chloe's coming from, and says sorry. Chloe says that if that's the case, she'll stop pushing her to be bridesmaid.
ELLY: There's nothing I can say to Mark that won't raise more questions.
CHLOE: Look, I can't switch off how I feel. I have tried.
ELLY: Then I guess we're both in trouble.
A gaggle of extras appear and loudly demand that Chloe and Elly come and join the party. They reluctantly acquiesce.
Toadie is mouthing off about Karl to Shane. Dipi wonders what they're talking about.
TOADIE: Karl is guilty of negligence – I don't see any point in sugar- coating it!
SHANE and DIPI: …
TOADIE: He is doctor! He's meant to be the smartest bloke in the room, and he has no clue.
Karl is having a Parallel Conversation™ with David – who opines that while Toadie has a right to be angry, it doesn't mean he's right.
KARL: Except he is…
Toadie rants that Sonya was feeling off for weeks after Heather poisoned her; they specifically asked Karl if it was okay to wait before seeing a specialist, and he advised them yes.
Karl makes the exact same point to David, but David argues that Karl couldn't have known.
KARL: I should've ordered more tests. I should have ordered an MRI, just in case.
DAVID: You know that's not how it works. And even if you'd done all that, you would've what – saved two weeks? What difference would that have made?
KARL: Yeah, maybe.
The hen party is well underway. In attendance are Chloe, Elly, Bea, Piper and diverse extras, including some topless waiters Bea has hired. However, the waiters soon leave because they've only been booked for an hour – leaving the girls with a serious quandary. That's until David sneaks in to grab his phone charger, and is promptly pounced on and asked to topless- wait on the hens himself!
CHLOE: It's like we put a call- out to the universe and here you are!
DAVID: I'm not taking my clothes off in front of strangers!
CHLOE: You know most of us.
DAVID: That's even worse!
BEA: Oh, come on – it's only the top half!
David volunteers Aaron instead, but he's Not In This Episode™ - so David eventually relents and goes to get changed.
CHLOE: Guard the bedroom door – make sure he doesn't sneak out.
BEA: On it!
Once Bea's out of earshot, Elly asks Chloe if they can finish their conversation from earlier. Unwilling to have the conversation, Chloe reminds Elly it's her hen night – she should be having fun – and sends her over to get a pedicure instead.
At the pub, there's some deeply uninteresting shenanigans going down with Jane Fraser, a wealthy businesswoman looking for a property investment outside the UK. Mel has earmarked her as a potential Robinson Pines investor and is telling Paul all about it, but he seems more interested in watching Leo and Terese flirt and canoodle at a nearby table.
Mel suggests Paul deploy a major charm offensive with Jane Fraser, as if she invests, she'll tell all her rich friends and drive more sales. He distractedly agrees. Paul and Terese give each other an awkward glance.
Toadie comes in and finds Sonya crying on the couch, with the TV on. He comforts and kisses her, assuring her it's going to be okay.
SONYA: It's not gonna be okay, Jarrod.
TOADIE: We'll get through this, babe.
SONYA: Lisa's choux pastry was just a complete disaster, and the cream puffs were supposed to be this, like, crowning glory – on top of this five- layer divorce cake. And it just… it just got ruined!
TOADIE: Here I was thinking that we had problems!
SONYA: Oh, gosh. Perspective, right?
Toadie says Sonya's looking better, and she admits she feels it too – though she admits she got worn out earlier playing with Nell and Clancy. Sonya asks Toadie how his pub drinks were; Toadie mentions that Karl turned up.
SONYA: You know that he blames himself for what's going on?
TOADIE: So he should.
SONYA: Sorry, what?
TOADIE: Sonya, he had a duty of care.
SONYA: It's not his fault that I've got cancer.
TOADIE: It is his fault that it's progressed as far as he has. He should've picked it up sooner. And you know what? If he's feeling guilty about that, then that's on him. He gets nothing from me.
Sonya looks surprised and concerned.
Ned turns up at the garage, and tells Mark that Bea said he could borrow a multi- meter (whatever that is) for Terese's car. Mark gives only vague directions as to its whereabouts, and Ned looks annoyed that he wasn't more specific, but goes to search for it!
Mel turns up and asks Mark if he'd thought about having an appraisal on his house. He hasn't, and Mel says that if he wants to do it, they should move soon, since she has a new job with Robinson Pines and won't have much time. Mark congratulates Mel.
Mel seems a bit put out that Mark hadn't already heard this news from Chloe, since they had drinks together last night and she'd have thought Chloe would've told her family.
MEL: So she hasn't mentioned me at all? Or the drinks? Or if she had a good time – or not?
MARK: Did you come in here about the appraisal, or about Chloe?
MEL: Maybe both (…) We cleared things up, but I haven't heard from her since.
MARK: Well, you know she's been busy, organising the hens' and…
Embarrassed, Mel leaves, reminding Mark to let her know about the appraisal on her way out. Ned, having found the multi- meter, remarks that Mel seems keen on Chloe, and asks if Chloe feels the same. Mark says he hasn't seen any evidence if she is.
NED: That'll be awkward. Thanks.
MARK: Make sure you bring it back.
Ned gives Mark a look!
Jane Fraser, the UK business mogul, has arrived. Paul turns on the charm offensive immediately, and takes Jane over to get a drink from Sheila. Terese and Leo watch from afar, wondering who the newcomer is, while Paul and Jane get talking about a business proposition.
David has begun his topless waiter gig, much to the delight of several extras. Piper starts taking pictures of him to send to Xanthe, while Elly announces that Amy is Not In This Episode™ but is meeting them later. Bea announces a game called ‘Know Your Elly', involving questions about Elly. Chloe knows some pretty obscure answers and it's slightly awkward when she gets them all right.
Thankfully at that moment, the party bus arrives to take them all to the Back Lane Bar. Chloe gets a text from Mel, asking her if she's having a good time. She looks conflicted as she considers how/whether to reply.
Sonya visits Karl, and apologises to him for what Toadie said about her cancer progression being his fault.
KARL: I keep playing it through in my mind. If I'd acted earlier, if I'd noticed the signs…
SONYA: The signs were muddled because I'd been poisoned.
KARL: Yeah, but even so…
SONYA: No – no, please. I'm not gonna let you do this to yourself, okay. I do not blame you, yeah? And neither does Jarrod – he's just hurting.
KARL: I know he is, but –
SONYA: No. Stop. I want you to stop. You have always been there for our family. I mean, you *are* our family. We love you so much, Karl.
They hold hands.
KARL: Thank you.
SONYA: Yes. And Jarrod, he will calm down, okay? He'll calm down once he gets over the shock of it all.
KARL: Yeah. Well, you know what? Whether he does or not, I do not want you spending any energy on this, okay? You need to focus on your own health (…) And to be honest, if I was in Toadie's shoes, I think I'd feel the same way.
SONYA: I know. But I just don't like seeing you hurting.
KARL: If Toadie wants to take his anger out on me, I'm happy to wear it. Especially if it means he's not yelling at Yashvi, or losing focus over Hugo's custody.
SONYA: You don't deserve to be a punching- bag, Karl.
KARL: Oh, Sonya. You don't deserve anything that's happening to you. Sometimes we don't get to choose. And if it helps Toadie to focus his anger onto me, then please, please let him, yeah?
Sonya nods, but looks unsure.
Back Lane Bar
Elly's hen party has descended on Melbourne's hottest drinking venue, and everyone is doing shots and dancing with the original topless waiters, who are randomly back. Chloe is fiddling with her phone and looking miserable, so Elly comes over and tells her to forget about the bridesmaid stuff – she'll stop pestering Chloe about ‘the B word'.
CHLOE: That's gonna make it hard. How am I gonna be bridesmaid if you're never gonna say the word?
ELLY: You don't have to. Your heart's not in it.
CHLOE: Maybe my heart's in it too much (...) You've been right all along.
ELLY: Are you sure?
CHLOE: Yep. No regrets.
ELLY: You know how much this means to me and Mark?
CHLOE: Why don't you go prove it and get me a drink to celebrate?
But the moment Elly's back is turned, Chloe's smile falls and she looks upset.
Night- time, and Sonya is getting a glass of water. Toadie appears, and she admits she can't sleep for thinking about Karl.
TOADIE: Oh, sweetie – he's done enough. You don't have to have him keep you awake at night, too.
SONYA: No, no, no. You can't keep pushing people away, alright? We're gonna need all the support that we can get.
TOADIE: If we're entitled to push anyone away, it's the person who let you develop stage four cancer.
SONYA: Okay, I know that you're angry and you're scared, and so am I. But it's not fair to blame Karl.
TOADIE: You want to talk about what's not fair? You went to him. You told him that you weren't feeling well. I went to him, and – he had every chance! I don't want to feel this angry either!
SONYA: I don't want you to feel it either, okay? Not when I'm trying to fight this.
TOADIE: Yeah… I can't help it. He did this to you, and I don't know how to –
Toadie breaks down in tears, and Sonya hugs him, telling him it's okay.
Paul is introducing Jane Fraser to Terese and Leo, and explaining her interest in Robinson Pines. Conversation moves on to Paul's penthouse, and its stunning views of the Melbourne skyline.
JANE FRASER: I'd like to see that.
PAUL: Well, I think anything that you're interested in, I'd be only too happy to accommodate.
Terese is instantly on alert as to what looks like mild flirtation between the pair, and feeling uncomfortable, she makes an excuse to leave. Leo follows her out, asking what's wrong. Terese says she just needs to grab some paperwork from the office, and says she'll see him at home, before kissing him and leaving. Leo looks puzzled.
Back Lane Bar
Elly and Bea are getting gradually merrier as the evening goes on. Elly tells Bea that Chloe's on board as a bridemaid again. Bea looks momentarily uncomfortable, then says that's ‘so good'.
BEA: She knows everything about you. Even if it's a little bit weird!
ELLY: What?! No, she doesn't!
BEA: Yeah, like, literally everything!
Piper interrupts, and asks if they've seen Chloe. They haven't; Piper suggests she may have picked up, and they all laugh.
Chloe marches purposefully into the pub, where Mel is sitting at the bar.
MEL: Does the bride know you've done a runner?
Chloe doesn't say anything – just takes Mel by the hand, and drags her off towards the toilets, before kissing her passionately on the lips. Mel smiles and kisses her back.
Sonya turns up for a late- night visit to Dipi. Dipi starts telling Sonya about all the research she's been doing into complementary therapies to help with the cancer treatment, but it's clear Sonya has other things on her mind.
SONYA: I don't know what to do about Jarrod. He's not coping. He's just, you know, consumed with anger – and now he's directing it at Karl. And I guess I just don't know how he's gonna keep it up, all that anger. But he's trying to be so strong for me, and for the kids, and… if he can't, then… I don't…
Sonya sighs, evidently very upset.
Paul comes to see Terese in her office.
TERESE: What are you doing here? I thought Jane wanted a personal tour of the penthouse?
PAUL: You do realise that she is a married woman?
TERESE: Hmm. That's never stopped you before.
PAUL: Terese, I thought we'd moved on from this.
TERESE: Moved on from what? Your cheap flirting with clients?
PAUL: I was not flirting. That's called making a guest feel welcome.
TERESE: No, it's inappropriate.
PAUL: Don't be ridiculous.
TERESE: You know what? I'm not doing this. Do you actually think I enjoy seeing you like that with other women?
PAUL: Oh. Like the way you expect me to sit back and watch you rub my face in your relationship with my son?
TERESE: I'm not. Leo and I are together.
PAUL: Yeah? If that's the case, then why do you have such a problem with the way I behave with other women?
TERESE: It's not the other women. It's the way you jump from one to the next in the blink of an eye! If only it was that easy for the rest of us.
PAUL: Yeah, if only that were true.
TERESE: Which part isn't?
Paul gets up very close.
PAUL: When you want one person and one person only, everyone else just becomes a pale imitation.
TERESE: Look, I am sorry things didn't work out with Jane Harris.
PAUL: I'm not talking about Jane Harris, or Jane Fraser. Terese… what did you say, exactly, when you were in the hospital?
TERESE: … I asked for you. I said I needed you.
They both move in for a kiss, but Terese moves aside at the last moment…
