Hospital
Nell has brought Sonya a pressie - some homemade ANZAC biscuits and, together with Toadie, they gently tell her that Sonya needs to stay in hospital overnight. Toadie asks about calling Callum but she will do that after the surgery. Sonya is beginning to fear the worst of what might happen in theatre, especially a hysterectomy even though she admits they've not talked about having more children.
TOADIE: It will be okay.
SONYA: Are you not worried?
TOADIE: Only about you and getting you through this. That's it.
The Waterhole
Graciously, Mel admits that she "betrayed" Chloe but asks that she tries to understand her - she'd never fallen so hard for someone before and that they were in over their heads with their business. "So, you punished me for breaking it off," remarks Chloe and hasn't forgotten being put in danger either when their landlord came after her, for their debts. "It was a moment of madness, that I instantly regretted," Mel tries to explain and even Elly doesn't seem amused that it then took her 6 months to respond do messages Chloe had sent.
Mel, now she is financially stable, wants to pay Chloe back, even though Chloe said that wasn't necessary. Eventually the ice seems to thaw on both sides and Chloe gives her consent for Mel to stay on at Lassiters.
Hospital
Karl stops by to answer the questions Toadie and Sonya have regarding her upcoming surgery and her fertility. He explains the operation will be carried out by laparoscope and thus will open the door open for IVF. Sonya isn't exactly convinced, but while Karl acknowledges that there are risks, her "personal health is paramount."
Once Karl leaves (the surgeon is prepping so she should be taken soon), Sonya asks Toadie what he is thinking, and he is of the same mindset as Karl - her health is paramount. She tentatively asks if they could undergo IVF, and he agrees even though they've not really discussed it, because he knows "how much it means to you."
Toadie then goes hunting for Nell so she can say bye to her mum before going home with Dipi. While the lass goes off and does that, he thanks Dipi (and Shane) for their babysitting efforts. She is more than happy to help and asks Toadie if he is okay.
TOADIE: It's just, so much has gone wrong for her. I just want something to go right for a change.
The Waterhole
David, Mark and Amy are chatting over a glass of wine and a game of cards when Mel comes over with a bottle of wine as a thank you for Mark's help in getting Chloe to chat to her. Being forward, she's brought 4 glasses over with the bottle and asks that she joins them so that she has the opportunity to explain things to them, even though they perhaps know a different version to what she is about to say.
Hospital
The orderlies come in to take Sonya away to theatre. Before she goes, Toadie and Sonya say their 'love you's' to one another and Toadie reaffirms that he does want them to undergo IVF.
The Waterhole
As we return to the bar, Mel has finished telling her version of her life story to David, Amy and Mark. She acknowledges that it she will be pushing her luck to get Chloe to forgive her but is going to at least try. After Amy calls it a night, and Mel is at the bar getting another bottle, the boys give Mel their thumbs up over liking her.
Harold's café
"Classic Mel," is how Chloe describes what happened in the bar after being brought up to speed by Amy. "I'm not siding with her," Amy replies and knows what its like being saddled with someone else's debt. She also commented that Mel seemed "really genuine" but then doubts herself given her own "situation with Gary is a mess."
AMY: Part of me still hopes that he'll pick up his game, but... that could take a while.
CHLOE: Does anyone really change though? I mean, deep down, not just like a new haircut and fresh round of Botox.
"I don't know," Amy replies citing how Liam seems to have turned his life around in New York and is there now for Jimmy. "Took him long enough to get sorted, though, from what I've heard," Chloe comments and Amy agrees, that back then he wasn't ready to "step up and take on responsibility."
CHLOE: So, you've forgiven him?
AMY: Yeah. You move on. Maybe Liam's proof that if you give someone a second chance they can change.
Both seem to sit and ponder that last part which Amy said.
Number 30
"Is Mummy okay?" Nell asks when Dipi brings her and the sleeping Hugo home. Toadie quickly reassures her that she is, the doctors are "going to ?x her tummy up" and they will go see her tomorrow.
Hospital (next day)
Another doctor, Dr Goodwin, seeks Karl out to talk to him about Sonya, as she's been asked to step in and take over her care. Karl looks worried as they head off to her office to chat.
Number 24
Mark tells his sister that after their chat last night, he thinks Mel's intentions are good and wonders if she will see Mel again? "Well, I'm not going to jump back into a relationship with her," is Chloe's initial reply but Mark seems to think that Mel wants to put things right but acknowledges that it's his sisters call.
Harold's café
"I owe you an apology," Mel tells Elly when she spots her sitting in the café. She expands by admitting she was nervous at seeing Chloe and "what I might be walking into." Elly doesn't respond to that last comment, and Mel leaves her (and the newly arrived Mark) to it and heads to the counter to order.
"Still not a fan?" Mark asks and that would be the understatement of the year, Elly isn't amused at Mel trying to use her to suss out Chloe's relationship status without explaining who she was beforehand. "Well, everyone's a bit curious about their ex, aren't they?" Mark tries to say to rationale what happened.
Hospital
Toadie is by Sonya's bedside when she wakes up and reassures her, after she asked, that Dipi has the kids and she will bring them in when Sonya is ready. She explains that she is good, but groggy and not in too much pain just as Karl arrives asking how she is.
SONYA: I feel better than expected, actually. I'm looking forward to just going home
At the mention of 'home' a tired Toadie is about to head off as he didn't get much sleep last night, but Karl suggests that he stays a bit longer. Cue worried faces, so he explains it is simply that Sonya's specialist is going to come in and chat through the post-op plan. The mention of 'a specialist' immediately has the pair worried and Karl tries to deflect their questions by replying that the specialist will answer their questions.
SONYA: You're here.
Karl dodges replying by instead saying that the specialist is with another patient but won't be long before hurriedly exiting Sonya's room. All it has done though is leave the pair more confused than ever, and Sonya now wonders if she will indeed need the hysterectomy they were talking about. "Let's not get too ahead of ourselves, okay?" Toadie says to his wife to try and displace her fears.
Lassiters Complex
Elly admits her nervousness about her forthcoming interview and about Mark too when she runs into Chloe just outside the hotel. She enquires how Chloe is going after yesterday, and the lass admits she is still weighing up whether to "let her back in my life again." Chloe is after Elly's advice but it's not her choice to make.
CHLOE: But you're allowed to have an opinion. What you think means a lot to me.
ELLY: Okay, um... yeah, I worry she's going to hurt you again. That you'll strike up a friendship and then it'll turn into something more, just like last time.
CHLOE: And that'd be bad.
ELLY: Well, it's a risk. But then...love is a risk, right? At the end of the day, I just want you to be happy and who knows? You know, maybe Mel is the one that can make you happy?
Before heading off, Elly reassures her that whatever decision she makes, "I'll always be here as your friend."
The Waterhole, veranda
Mel admits when Chloe arrives, that she wasn't sure if she would ever hear from her again. "I haven't enjoyed reliving our break-up, but I don't have time to waste on holding grudges," Chloe explains.
MEL: I won't mess you around again.
CHLOE: I won't let you.
With the air somewhat cleared between them, Chloe asks what she is "expecting to get out of this?" After initially saying "I came here for you," Mel then adds that she is looking for a new challenge and can see "there might be some professional opportunities for me here, in Erinsborough." The fact Mel is contemplating a move to Erinsborough is somewhat news for Chloe, but apparent she should have known Mel doesn't "muck around."
MEL: I'm still attracted to you.
CHLOE: ...
MEL: But you're clear on where you stand and so am I. I miss our friendship and I regret destroying it, but I would really love the chance to start again.
"A fresh start," Chloe adds, something she could also use in my own life. "What are you saying?" Mel asks and Chloe replies that she'd like "to be friends, too." "Guess that means I'll be hanging around for a while," Mel comments. However, as she said those words, she was touching Chloe's arm and she doesn't appear to like it as she stood up very quickly walked away with Mel, forcing Mel to say, "I'll wait to hear from you."
Hospital
Toadie and Sonya patiently wait for the specialist to arrive and eventually Dr Goodwin and Karl enter the room. "Sorry, we don't really know what's going on," Toadie says after Dr Goodwin apologises for the wait and doing the intros.
DR GOODWIN: I'm a medical oncologist. I've been asked to step in and take over your care.
SONYA: Um, why?
DR GOODWIN: After your cyst was removed, a tissue sample was taken for a biopsy. It tested positive for a yolk sac tumour. You have ovarian cancer.
SONYA: I have cancer?
The pair are stunned at the news Dr Goodwin has just delivered and Toadie is confused because the cyst was removed.
DR GOODWIN: We divide ovarian cancer into four stages. Stage one means it hasn't spread past the ovaries,
while stage four means the cancer has spread to other organs. Now, Sonya, you might not remember going in for a CT scan after surgery?
(Sonya shakes her head and mouths no)
DR GOODWIN: The scan shows that the cancer has spread to your gastrointestinal tract, your liver and your brain. There are multiple tumours. It's Stage Four cancer. I'm so sorry.
Coming up on Neighbours
- Terese hunting Paul down and not mincing her words!
- Mark worried about his hearing.
- Toadie upset.
- Sonya resolute and wanting to know how they beat her cancer.
