Leo turns up to see Terese in reception; he's bought her a pampering voucher to use at the Flametree Retreat, saying she deserves it after all she's been through lately. Paul turns up; he asks Terese how Piper is coping following Tyler's release, noting that prison can change people. Terese says she wants both of them to find some peace, whether that's together or apart.
PAUL: Whatever happens, I'm sure Piper will work it out. She's a tough cookie, like her mum.
Leo and Terese are keen to know what time Paul's flight for Darwin leaves. He says it's not until this evening. Asking Terese to pass his regards to Piper, he tells her to call him if she needs anything, and walks off. Terese and Leo exchange a ‘that was close' glance.
Piper and Tyler are sitting on the steps down to the lake.
PIPER: Is this real?
TYLER: … This is real.
PIPER: I can't believe you cut your hair! I mean, I know that you did, because they told me, but… seeing you is just so different.
PIPER: Listen, I -
TYLER: There's something I need to say –
PIPER: Sorry – you go.
TYLER: When I got sentenced, I didn't want you waiting for me. You know, that's why I said I didn't love you. And then they kept telling me you weren't moving on, and… that's why I wrote and said goodbye.
PIPER: I know. But the thing is… getting that letter, that's what made me properly commit myself to Cassius. I told myself that I had to move on from you.
TYLER: Well, just so you know – I never stopped loving you.
PIPER (tearful): I wish that we could go back, Ty. And I wish that I just… I saw that something was up with him sooner. I'm sorry – going on about it's making it worse.
TYLER: We can't pretend like it didn't happen.
PIPER: Him being your half- brother, I just… I kept thinking, maybe that's why I fell for him. Because deep down, I just sensed this connection.
TYLER: He's a liar, like Hamish.
PIPER: He's… not. He's nothing like Hamish; he's different. Cassius did a horrible thing – but he had a conscience about it. He was… he was tortured. That's why he did all these good deeds. I really think that, deep down, Cassius was a victim of Hamish too.
TYLER: Do you still love him?
Aaron, Chloe and Elly are preparing for Tyler's homecoming. Ever the wine fan, Elly goes to open the $10,000 bottle that Pierce sent for Chloe – but Chloe stops her, whispering while Aaron's out of earshot that it's too valuable to waste on ‘beer- swilling' Tyler, and admitting Pierce gave it to her.
ELLY: Chlo, you can't let him pressure you into this. This has to be your decision.
CHLOE: It was, don't worry.
ELLY: Was?! Does that mean you two…?
CHLOE: Things got kind of crazy today, and it just… happened.
ELLY: So, you're thinking of taking him up on his offer?
CHLOE: We didn't talk about it. Like I said, It was pretty spontaneous. But then I came home to this – so now I'm not so sure.
Chloe adds that Pierce also sent her a diamond necklace. Elly thinks Chloe needs to talk to Pierce. At that moment, Mark comes in, and tells everyone that Tyler is with Piper, sorting things out.
On the steps, Piper's heartfelt chat with Tyler continues.
PIPER: I was a mess when you left. I couldn't imagine a future without you, and I just… I fell apart. But Xanthe and everyone stuck by me, and I got help, and I started to realise that I had to keep living my life, even though you were gone. I'm sorry – that sounds so harsh.
TYLER: You still haven't answered the question.
PIPER: Cassius was a big part of me feeling normal again. He was sweet and kind, and we had this connection through reading – and it just felt like the universe was telling me that it was okay to move on. Which is a long way of saying, yes – I did love him. But Tyler, I hate him for what he did to you. And I never stopped loving you. I'm sorry – I know that's not the answer you wanted to hear.
TYLER: Yeah, I just – I can't stop thinking that if he hadn't been caught, you two could've had a whole life together. And I still would've been in jail, for something that I didn't do.
PIPER: Yeah, but Ty, you're free now, okay? And everyone knows the truth.
Piper reminds him that he hasn't even been home yet; all of this can wait until later. Tyler agrees, saying he needs to see Aaron and Chloe.
Amy is moaning to Elly about all the obstacles between her and a potential relationship with Gary. Paul hates him, and then there's the issue that Amy was once in a relationship with Gary's son Kyle. But Elly thinks that if it's playing on Amy's mind this much, there must be something between them.
At that moment, Gary and Xanthe appear; Gary is wheeling a Flametree coffee cart down towards the lake. They make brief and awkward small- talk, before Amy and Elly leave. Xanthe notices something is up and asks Gary what's going on. Gary says he doesn't know.
XANTHE: You need to do something. I mean, deep down, I think she really likes you.
Amy is loading bags of gravel onto her ute when Gary turns up. He offers to help her, but she's nearly done – so he cuts straight to the chase instead.
GARY: I think it's obvious how I feel about you. And I know that you said that you're not ready for anything new, and you need time to think. And if you only want to be friends, that's seriously fine – but right now, we're not even that. So, I guess I'm just wondering – did I push you away for good, or… is there still some hope?
AMY: You've been there so much for me lately. I don't know what I'd do without you.
GARY: It's okay, I get it. You just want to be friends.
AMY: No – I don't (…) I didn't realise what was happening. It kind of snuck up on me. But I love every second I spend with you. And I can talk to you about anything. But I was so focused on making things work with Rob…
GARY: So what are you saying?
AMY: I'm saying that the man I really want to be with is right here – in front of me.
AMY: You, you idiot! I think we should give this a chance, and see what happens.
GARY: Amy – you've just made me so happy that I can breathe again!
AMY: That's a good start, then!
Gary reminds her that Paul won't be thrilled, but she says they'll work it out. She takes his hand.
AMY: The important thing is that this feels right.
Gary laughs happily.
The Brennans and Piper welcome Tyler back to the house for the first time.
TYLER (to Chloe): Elliott – long time, no see!
CHLOE: No kidding, Gertie! I should have been here for the trial – I'm so sorry.
TYLER: It's okay.
CHLOE: It isn't. But I'm going to make it up to you, I promise.
Mark shows Tyler his old green chair, which they've retrieved from storage for him after David rescued it from being sold. They're all excited to have him back in it where he belongs, but Tyler doesn't seem to be enjoying himself so much. He glances up at his siblings, and then at Piper.
TYLER: Look, I… I'm sorry. I appreciate it all; I just need some air.
He leaves the house, and Aaron comforts an upset- looking Piper.
Amy is walking with Gary as he wheels the coffee cart down to the lake. When they reach their destination, they have a Moment™, which almost leads to a pash, except for…
PAUL: Amy!! Tell me this isn't what it looks like?!
AMY: It is what it looks like.
PAUL: But you just broke up with Rob – and what, now you're with him?!
Paul, it seems, is finally getting the hang of how Neighbours works!
AMY: Well, it wasn't working with Rob, so…
GARY: Hi, Paul!
Amy proceeds to make the situation even worse, by telling Paul that she's giving the money he gave her for the house with Rob to Gary, to spend on Xanthe's uni fees!
PAUL: You may as well flush it down the dunny! He's not gonna pay you back!
GARY: Hey, I'm right here, in case you hadn't noticed!
PAUL: Amy, he is using you – can't you see that?!
AMY: No, I'm sorry, but you are wrong!
GARY: You might not like me, but Amy does, and that's all that counts. So you can either get on board with this, or you can shut up and just get out of the way!
Paul sees red, and pushes Gary's coffee cart straight into the lake! He walks away looking pleased with himself as it sinks into the water…
Piper is paying a tearful visit to Terese; Tyler's so broken and hurt, she explains, and she doesn't know what to do. Terese says that just being there will be enough.
Paul storms in, interrupting, and Piper leaves. Paul asks Terese if she knows about Amy and Gary being an item. Terese didn't, but seems pleased by this development.
TERESE: Yeah, I think they'd be well- matched!
PAUL: What, my daughter and that idiot?!
TERESE: Hey – Gary is a nice man. And I know this means nothing to you, but he and Amy could actually be really happy together (…) I hope it works out for them.
Paul storms out again.
Paul is angrily trying to get his suitcase closed for his trip to Darwin, when Leo, David and Aaron come in. Paul explains that Amy and Gary are now a couple. Leo argues that Amy must really like Gary; it's her decision and they should respect it.
PAUL: You're as bad as Terese! Am I the only person here who can see that this is a disaster waiting to happen?
David points out that, if Terese doesn't care that Gary's with someone else, it must mean at least mean that she is over him.
PAUL: Good point, yeah. Hadn't thought of it from that angle. Actually, Piper implied the other day that Terese had Feelings™ for me, so…
Paul's phone beeps – his cab to the airport his here, so he rushes out, asking Aaron to give Tyler his best wishes when he sees him.
Tyler wanders through the gardens looking tormented and emotional. He sits on a bench, and then lies down on it, looking up at the sky.
Amy and Gary are pulling the coffee cart out of the lake! Amy is apologising for Paul's behaviour, but Gary insists it isn't her fault.
AMY: I can't believe Dad would be so childish... Okay, yeah, maybe I can.
They rekindle their Moment™ from earlier, and kiss this time – just as resident cupid Xanthe turns up, with Sheila in tow, to gush over how it's “finally happening” between Gary and Amy (despite not even being on the cards two weeks ago). Gary and Amy confirm to Sheila and Xanthe that they're now together. Sheila looks surprised, but says if it feels right, then she's happy for them.
Tyler comes in to find Piper languishing in his chair; everyone else has gone out, so as to give them some space.
PIPER: It's pretty full on, hey – everyone wanting a piece of you?
TYLER: Yeah. A little (…) I spent eight months wanting my life back. You know, wanting all this. But nothing feels the same.
PIPER: Ty, it's only been a day. Just give yourself some time.
TYLER: You don't understand. You know, being on the inside – it's another world. You have to adapt, or you go crazy.
PIPER: Did you adapt?
TYLER: I was struggling. You remember when I first went to jail, how I was being threatened?
PIPER: Yeah, by that Banks guy.
TYLER: Yeah. One of his buddies got transferred to Adelaide. That was the day it hit me. It was either survive, or… or not.
PIPER: I can't imagine how scared you must've been.
TYLER: I survived. I even became mates with the guy. Does that shock you?
PIPER: No – you did what you needed to do. And Tyler, no- one expects you to just slot back into your life here.
TYLER: I don't want to let anyone down. Especially you.
PIPER: Tyler, you could never let me down.
She takes his hand.
PIPER: Listen – even if we have to start from scratch, my heart tells me that we can do this. And I really believe that. Do you?
TYLER: Yeah, I… I want to. But I – I'm sorry, I… I really want to be with you. But I keep thinking about you and him together.
PIPER: I'm sorry.
TYLER: He did this, not you.
PIPER: I don't know what to say, Tyler. Do you want to talk about it?
TYLER: I think I just need some time – and space.
PIPER: Okay. Well, when you're ready to talk, you know where to find me.
Tearful again, Piper leaves. Tyler looks conflicted.
Outside The Waterhole, Elly and Chloe appear to be quaffing the $10,000 wine that Pierce bought Chloe! Elly asks if Chloe has spoken to him yet; she says she's been too caught up in Tyler coming home, and in any case has decided not to say anything about the expensive gifts.
CHLOE: If things happen between us again, and he sends me more gifts, then I'll have my answer. In the meantime, I'm just going to sell the necklace, and use the money to help my mum out.
Elly says that she's happy if Chloe is happy, but would like to know whether or not she's going to tell Mark. Chloe thinks the very idea is hilarious! But Elly's uncomfortable knowing things about Chloe that Mark doesn't.
She says she won't blab, but suggests that Chloe be upfront with Mark, since it will all come out eventually anyway. But Chloe says her thing with Pierce could simply be a one- off, so until then she is just going to relax and ‘enjoy the moment'.
Terese has come to visit Leo.
TERESE: Paul thinks I have Feelings™ for him?
LEO: Yeah – he said he heard it from Piper.
TERESE: No, someone's got their wires crossed.
LEO: So, there's no truth to it?
TERESE: Hey, I can assure you – the only person I have Feelings™ for is you.
They move onto discussing whether they should go public with their relationship. Leo doesn't want to hurt Paul, but Terese says that the longer Paul thinks he's still in with a chance with Terese, the more hurt he will be. Leo adds that finding out about Amy and Gary has really thrown Paul.
TERESE: But at least it's out in the open. And that's what I want, too. But I respect your decision.
Leo kisses her in response.
LEO: Let's do it.
They kiss again.
Aaron and David are just coming out of the hotel, when they see Paul getting out of a taxi.
DAVID: What happened to Darwin?
PAUL: I rescheduled. Couldn't stop thinking about Terese (…) I figured, if she has got Feelings™ for me, I should strike while the iron's hot, shouldn't I?
DAVID: So what – you're just going to tell her you want to be with her?
PAUL: Got it in one (…) Tonight.
Paul walks into the hotel. Aaron is impressed at Paul's romantic gesture, but David just hopes he's thought it through…
Leo is down to his undies and Terese astride him on the sofa, kissing him – both oblivious that Paul is on his way back into the building…
