A road somewhere
Finn is driving along in is car, smirking and nodding along to some loud music. Dipi is parked nearby, having a phone conversation. She sees Finn briefly as he drives past, and is distracted from her call…
Bea is hosing down the garage van, when Elly shows up. She wants to thank her for helping out at the school by treating her to a visit to a hair and nail bar. But Bea doesn't want to risk provoking Mark's wrath by leaving work early (even though he's away) after the mix- up with the invoices, so suggests they do it another time.
As Elly leaves, Bea gets talking to Yashvi, who's working across the fence in Amy's yard. Yashvi shows off some new football boots she's bought, which she declares are ‘the best'. Bea doesn't have much of a view on the boots, but she and Yashvi appear to be bonding.
Terese, Xanthe and Piper are having a coffee, but Piper is distractedly playing with her phone. Terese confiscates it! She sees that Piper has been looking at an old photo of her and Tyler. Piper admits she's feeling sad because Mark is in Adelaide visiting Tyler for a week, and yet she still hasn't even heard from him. Terese encourages her not to dwell on it.
Meanwhile, Shane comes in and finds Dipi distracted. She admits she saw someone who looked like Finn Kelly. Shane assures her that Finn is still in prison; she says she knows that, and didn't even get a good look at him.
DIPI: You're right. It's not him. It can't be him.
But she doesn't look wholly convinced of this.
Karl moans to Elly and Susan about a document pertaining to the MS trials that seems to have gone astray. Susan tells him not to get so worked up – he promised her he'd keep calm. Susan suggests Karl ring the new intern, ‘Patrick', to ask him for a second copy of the document.
No 28 / Apartment of Evil™
Karl speaks to ‘Patrick' on the phone, evidently not noticing that it's Finn Kelly's voice he's hearing. Finn smiles as he hears Karl's voice, and Karl welcomes him to the team.
FINN: I feel very lucky to be a part of it.
Karl asks for a copy of the document he's mislaid, then says he understands ‘Patrick' is working from home; however, he hopes he'll get a chance to put a face to the name soon.
FINN: Couldn't agree more. Although I do struggle to get out of the house a bit.
KARL: Yes – yes, I'm sorry to hear your MS has progressed so far.
FINN: It is what it is.
When Karl says he's researched various types of MS and asks which medication types have suited ‘Patrick' the best, Finn gets very defensive, saying he doesn't like to talk about it.
FINN: I know how to manage my condition.
Cutting further conversation short, Finn tells Karl to text him his email address, so he can send the document through, then ends the call. Karl looks mildly surprised at his defensiveness.
Susan is telling Sonya, Dipi and Elly about the remyelination therapy trials, saying the first infusions are next week – but that she's trying not to get her hopes up about their efficacy. She fields suggestions for ways to distract herself in the meantime.
SONYA: You know you've got the perfect solution in your back yard? Cassius! Oh my god, have you seen that guy?
ELLY: The gardener?!
SONYA: Yes, yes! I mean, he does it for me!
Sonya quickly reiterates that she'd never go there; Cassius simply provides ‘a little bit of inspiration'!
SONYA: He was at the nursery this morning. He was, like, lifting stuff up, and moving it – and lifting stuff up, and moving it…
SUSAN: Sonya Rebecchi!
SONYA: I know, I know. It's just with us trying to find Andrea, it's been a while since we – you know. And anyway, Jarrod's happy to reap the benefits, if you know what I mean.
DIPI: I've run out of reasons to tell Shane as to why I keep needing to visit Sheila!
SUSAN: I cannot believe what I'm hearing! (…) I suppose he does have lovely manners.
DIPI: Yeah. Susan, isn't your magnolia being fertilised today? Perhaps a glass of iced tea at your place later?
SUSAN: You're all outrageous!
Bea has found the receipt for Yashvi's football boots on the floor, and is horrified at how much she's spent on them.
YASHVI: Yeah, and that was the sale price.
BEA: Dude, that's ridiculous.
YASHVI: Yeah, well – it's an investment. If I want to be the best, I've got to have the best… What?
BEA: Nothing. Just different priorities, I guess. I'm not judging.
YASHVI: Seems like you are.
BEA: Well I'm not. I would never spend this much money on a pair of shoes.
BEA: I know how hard it can be to get by for some people. I don't take money for granted.
YASHVI: Right, well, thanks for making me feel like a selfish idiot.
BEA: I didn't mean to make you feel bad…
YASHVI: We're not rich, if that's what you're thinking.
BEA: I never said you were. But the money you spent on these boots could feed a starving family for a month.
YASHVI: Yeah, cos you're the poverty expert (!) You have a cruisy job and you live with your boyfriend. Don't blame me cos you're tight with your cash.
YASHVI: No, it's cool. At least I know where we stand.
BEA: I lived on the streets. I was homeless.
Shortly afterwards, Yashvi queries Bea on how this came about.
YASHVI: Didn't you grow up with Elly?
BEA: Nah, we grew up separately when our parents split. I lived with Dad, and he was never father of the year (…) Dad got back with his first wife and we just didn't get on. So then I tried to live with Mum and Elly, but Elly told Mum she didn't want me there.
YASHVI: No way?
BEA: Yeah, so Mum kicked me out. She chose Elly over me.
YASHVI: Man – that sucks (…) Did Elly ever apologise?
BEA: She seems to have blanked it from her mind (…) She's a different person now.
YASHVI: Still, it might help to talk to her.
BEA: Maybe. I'm just not ready.
Bea apologises for making Yashvi feel bad about the boots; but Yashvi says it's made her think.
YASHVI: I mean, I'm not taking them back or anything!
BEA: I don't expect you to! You know, maybe I need to lighten up a little bit more.
Yashvi says that now Bea has a job, she should treat herself to nice things sometimes. Bea looks thoughtful.
Dipi, Susan and Sonya are perving on Cassius over their iced tea, as he does the gardening. Dipi already has him mentally cast as Shiny Pants Bobby, one of the characters from her musical, Flapper! Dipi explains that Gary's agreed to host an investors' lunch for her theatrical venture at the retreat next week – she needs some serious cash and some serious talent.
Karl watches the women suspiciously, as Elly arrives. She's been on the phone to Bea, who has reconsidered and is now coming to the beauty parlour with her. Karl calls Susan over for a private conversation.
KARL: This behaviour is disgraceful.
SUSAN: What behaviour?!
KARL: Oh, come on – don't be coy with me. I've been standing here watching you. You're objectifying that young man!
SUSAN: Who, Cassius?
SUSAN: Well, I mean, check him out! He does brighten up the landscape, doesn't he?
KARL: You're okay with this reverse exploitation, are you?
SUSAN: I don't know, Karl – let me think. Were you okay with Courtney giving you massages to relax and unwind?
KARL: No, no – Courtney's treatments were therapeutic!
SUSAN: Well, that's exactly what this is! So if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna get back to my therapy!
Susan rejoins the other women, while Karl looks irate.
Terese is working at a table, when Xanthe comes to join her.
XANTHE: Do you think that Piper's starting to think about Tyler again? (…) I mean, like, in a non- healthy way? Like how she was when he went to prison? I'd just hate to see her fall back into the place she was before.
Terese admits she had been worried too, but thinks Piper's in a better place than ever since Tyler left. Xanthe doesn't look so sure.
Meanwhile, Toadie and Shane are just finishing up a pool game, when Karl arrives.
KARL: Gents, we have a problem. Have you any idea what our wives are up to right now? They are in my back yard, ogling the gardener (…) and they're not making any attempt to hide it.
TOADIE: Well, he is ogle- worthy!
KARL: It's beside the point.
SHANE: He's been going into Sheila's back yard a fair bit, hasn't he? (…) Dipi's been going over there a fair bit – and when she comes home, it's full steam ahead!
Toadie realises that Sonya's sudden desire to TITTNL™ earlier must also have been due to her meeting Cassius.
SHANE: So they're using him as some kind of visual…
KARL: Stimulant! This is worse than I thought! I mean, they've set themselves up in my back yard… with iced tea!
TOADIE: What do you think we should do?
Karl, Shane and Toadie have called Cassius into the house for a meeting. Karl informs him that he's being fired! Cassius seems genuinely hurt, saying he thought Karl was happy with his work. Karl insists he has been and says it's nothing personal – claiming that he wants to handle the garden himself as part of his rehabilitation. Cassius begs, saying he needs the work. But Karl's unmoved.
Cassius leaves, and Karl feels guilty.
Apartment of Evil™
Bea comes in and ‘Patrick' is surprised to see her; she was supposed to be spending the afternoon with Elly. She explains she's just come home to get changed before going to the hair salon with Elly. Finn seems concerned that she's getting a haircut, and asks why.
BEA: Because I can.
FINN: I mean, what's brought this on? I thought you liked the way you look?
Bea admits she likes the idea of treating herself – she's never been able to do that before.
BEA: You know, I feel like I've been holding back. I'm just used to getting nothing, and feeling like I'm nothing.
FINN: So, is it a trim, or…?
BEA: Well, I feel like it should be a statement. I could even shave it if I wanted.
FINN: Babe, you can't change your hair.
BEA: Why not?!
FINN: I know this might sound silly… but I can't handle change. That's why I need you to keep your hair the same. Please?
BEA: Okay. It's okay. Nothing has to change.
FINN: Thank you.
He kisses her hand.
Cassius turns up and starts commentating on Piper's plant- watering technique. He explains he needs to cancel the order he made for the Kennedys, as he's been fired. Piper's surprised, saying she's had loads of customers asking for Cassius' number because of referrals.
CASSIUS: Were they all women?
PIPER: … What does that mean?
CASSIUS: It's fine. I know how I get a lot of my work, and I'm cool with it. But I guess it was just a matter of time before it backfired.
PIPER: I've heard a lot of feedback about your work. And none of it's been… physical.
PIPER: Okay, some of it has been. But once you get a job, you work your guts out (…) And you're a good listener, and you're thoughtful (…)
CASSIUS: Thanks. Well, maybe I should hire you as my new manager.
Piper jokes that she's too busy overwatering the plants. They smile at each other, and appear to have a Moment™. Cassius awkwardly thanks her for the pep- talk, and leaves. Piper looks conflicted.
Piper comes to visit Terese.
PIPER: I just had a Moment™ (…) with Cassius, the gardener.
Piper explains what happened at the nursery just now.
PIPER: I got butterflies, and… I hadn't had butterflies since –
TERESE: Since Tyler.
PIPER: I'm not ready (…) Letting go of Tyler is one thing, but to have a connection with someone else – that's like a whole other ball game.
TERESE: Darling, there's nothing to be afraid of. It was just one Moment™.
PIPER: Well, I don't want it to happen again. I love Tyler, and… he's the only person I ever want to love.
Elly is lending Bea a dress to wear for their salon date. But Bea tells Elly she's not ready for a new look after all, and asks if she minds if they don't go. Elly is disappointed, but tells Bea to keep the dress. Bea thanks her, and leaves.
Bea runs into Yashvi outside Harold's, and explains she's not going to the salon after all.
BEA: My boyfriend didn't seem that keen on me getting a new look.
YASHVI: So? What about what you want?
BEA: Well, I like my hair as is. And I wouldn't suit it being any shorter.
YASHVI: Your boyfriend shouldn't be telling you what you can and can't do; that's not cool.
BEA: He didn't (…) Besides, since when have you been a relationship expert?
YASHVI: I'm not. I'm just saying – you've just got over a massive fight, and now he's trying to control you.
BEA: You need to stop talking.
YASHVI: Why are you being so defensive?
BEA: Because I don't like getting relationship advice off a kid!
YASHVI: I may be a kid, but if I want to change something about myself, I do it.
BEA: You don't know anything about me. Or Patrick. If it wasn't for him, I'd still be living on the streets. He saved my life.
YASHVI: Even so, he shouldn't treat you like this.
BEA: Enough! You can't tell me what to do! You're just a spoiled brat who knows nothing.
Hurt, Yashvi gets up and walks off.
Apartment of Evil™
Finn is prepping some food in the kitchen when Bea returns home, and he has to leap back into his wheelchair. As he sees Bea close the door behind her, he has a flashback to a similar moment with Elly once upon a time, and smiles as he sees how similar to her sister Bea is. He notices Bea's upset.
BEA: I just had an argument with a friend.
FINN: (…) Well, whoever it is is an idiot.
Bea sits on his lap.
FINN: Remember – you have always got me.
He notices the dress in Bea's bag – Bea explains Elly gave it to her. Finn strokes it.
FINN: It's beautiful. And you are gonna look stunning in it.
Terese and Xanthe have convened to talk about Piper's love life again. Terese admits that she thinks Piper may be regressing back into a Tyler- obsessed state, and that she doesn't want to move on.
TERESE: Maybe it's time to give her a little nudge (…) Something happened today between her and Cassius (…) It wasn't much, but I think there may be an attraction there. But Piper's too scared to act on it. You know, she's scared that she's not ready for it.
TERESE: What, you don't think it's a good idea?
XANTHE: I just think that you and Piper have worked really hard to get your relationship back on track, and… If we go around playing matchmaker, and something goes wrong, then she might blame you.
TERESE: Yeah, but I'm not trying to make her fall in love – just dip her toes in the water. You know, she needs to get out there and see that there might be a connection with other people. And that it's not scary. Surely that's worth the risk?
Xanthe looks unsure.
