- Rafael tells Aaron he needs a new approach – and invites David for a second drink with him
- Paige admits to Terese and Lauren that she still has feelings for Jack; he's the father of her child
- Jack tells the naming day attendees that Gabe saved his life when he didn't know it needed saving
- Paige tells Jack there'll always be something between them; maybe they can start at the beginning
- Terese tells Gary she just wants what's best for Paige, Jack and Gabe
- After Piper tells Terese she doesn't know if she'll ever forgive her, Terese turns to drink
- A drunken Terese falls in the ornamental pool at Lassiter's
Piper watches from a distance while Sheila helps Terese dry off. Leo is threatening to tell Paul about her falling in the pool, but Terese tells him it was just a heel malfunction, and Gary backs her up. Leo is sceptical, but agrees not to say anything, and Gary takes Terese elsewhere to dry off.
Jack is using the iron, and Rafael is next in the queue. Jack asks if he has a date, and Rafael is evasive.
JACK: You're blushing! You're radiating love, buddy!
Rafael says it's not love – they're just going for a drink. Jack correctly guesses that it's David who he'll be drinking with, explaining that David is friends with Paige, his own companion for the evening. Jack says David's a nice guy, but Rafael is noncommittal. Jack leaves Rafael to his ironing.
Paige is leaving Gabe with David for the evening, so she can go for dinner with Jack, since Terese is still ‘tired and emotional' after the naming day ceremony. Paul comes in, asking what happened, and Paige explains about Terese's row with Piper. David admits he has a date himself this evening, but that he's asked Rafael to come around to the penthouse, so he can still mind Gabe.
Terese has had a shower following her dip in the pond, and joins Gary on the patio. Gary suggests she should start going to AA meetings again, and Terese agrees that she ought to.
TERESE: How could I have let this happen? On Gabe's big day, I've let everyone down.
Gary tells her not to be too hard on herself – it's understandable, given what's been going on between her and Piper.
TERESE: You know, I might be the worst mother, but I'm damn well going to be the best godmother!
GARY: Hey! You're a good mum. Whatever Piper says, you did the only right thing.
TERESE: Did I? I mean, she's broken- hearted. It's just so powerful at that age.
TERESE: Maybe I should've given her the chance to realise the mistakes she'd made.
GARY: The longer she was on the run with Tyler, the more trouble she was in.
TERESE: Piper's always been able to hold a grudge. But I've never, ever seen her this angry.
Rafael arrives, and David apologises for the change of plans – however, they have the whole place to themselves for the whole night. Rafael eyes the chessboard, and David asks if he plays; he says not. Just as well, David remarks, since Jimmy lost one of the pieces. David says he'd understand if Rafael wanted to take a raincheck.
RAFAEL: But we've definitely got the place to ourselves?
DAVID: I can even put a ‘do not disturb' sign on the door! Plus the fridge is fully stocked, and Paul gets all the movie channels.
RAFAEL: Let's do it!
Paige comes in to meet Jack for their dinner, and they start awkwardly flirting pretty much straight away. Sheila comes in, and asks where Gabe is; Paige says she has the night off. Evidently not having heard about the break- up, she remarks that Paige is lucky to have Mark to babysit. Awkward looks all round.
JACK: We could have brought him. Gabe, not Mark.
PAIGE: What sort of night out would that have been?
Meanwhile, nearby, Dipi is running a meeting of her new theatre group, comprising Shane, Toadie, Xanthe and selected extras. Sheila is happy for them to meet here, she says, provided that they don't scare off the other customers. Dipi gets them all on their feet for a warm- up, but Xanthe and Toadie are not enthusiastic, having only joined to help boost the numbers.
The theatre group starts making a lot of noise for the warm- up, so Jack suggests to Paige they could go somewhere quieter. However, she's happy watching them all make fools of themselves!
Piper opens the door to Steph, who's come round to see Mark about a technical matter with Ben's car. Piper explains that Mark's gone to work to distract himself, explaining that he and Paige have split up. Steph says she'll call Mark, and leaves.
As she goes, Gary comes in, wanting to speak to Piper about Terese, and to make her aware that she was drinking again earlier, prior to falling in the pond.
PIPER: That still doesn't change anything.
GARY: She thought she was never going to see you again.
PIPER: Well, she would've.
GARY: Well, that's not how it looked from her perspective. I mean, this grand plan of yours – you never brought her up to speed, so what else could she do? I mean, you're punishing her for doing something any mother worth her salt would've done!
PIPER: But I was with Tyler, and I was safe. All the details had been figured out.
GARY: You would've been caught, eventually – sooner or later! He would have still gone to jail, maybe for longer, and maybe you would have too!
PIPER: Still, it wasn't her place to make that call.
GARY: What other choice could a responsible parent make? Now, look – I'm not saying it's your fault she started drinking. But if you can't forgive her, then you might be losing someone else you love. And I don't think either of you can afford that.
Rafael watches, smiling, as David fusses over a giggling Gabe, and calls him ‘a natural'. Rafael asks about the progress of the new hospital wing, saying he's aware Paul is pumping a lot of money into it – and David's surprised he's heard about it. Rafael explains he's been speaking to Sheila. David says the plans have become trickier since Izzy came on board, but he's hoping he'll still be involved.
David asks Rafael to fetch some milk from the fridge for Gabe. Rafael says it may need warming up a bit. ‘Now who's the natural?' David replies.
Sheila watches sceptically from behind the bar as Dipi continues to drag her theatre group through various physical exercises. Meanwhile, Paige admits to Jack that she had ‘butterflies' about coming out with him tonight. Jack says he felt the same.
PAIGE: You don't get nervous, Jack Callahan – you just overthink things.
JACK: I'm a look- before- you- leap kind of guy.
PAIGE: You think?!
JACK: I know I need to get better at living in the moment. You know, deciding on something and doing it.
PAIGE: Not overthinking.
Dipi throws her next exercise open to the whole bar. Shane tries to volunteer Sheila to take part, but she's not having any of it! Dipi shouts out for other volunteers. Paige looks at Jack, silently reminding him that he should be ‘living in the moment'. Jack really doesn't want to join in with the theatre group, but Paige tells him not to overthink it! Jack stands up, and tells Dipi he'll volunteer…
David reports to Rafael that Gabe has gone down for a nap, and apologises for it not being the ideal date. Rafael asks why David didn't say no to Paige's babysitting request.
DAVID: I couldn't let her down.
RAFAEL: Because you're tight with your family and your friends?
DAVID: Sheila strikes again?
RAFAEL: Don't go blaming her. I might've asked a few questions about you and your family.
DAVID: Well, she's probably not the best person to talk to about Paul.
RAFAEL: She thinks he's lucky to have a loyal family to keep him in line.
DAVID: Family's everything to him.
RAFAEL: I get that.
DAVID: He's basically mapped out career strategies for me, Leo and Amy. Our own family empire.
RAFAEL: Amy? She's managing the housing development thing?
DAVID: Yeah. She's smashing it. She's capable, and she's not afraid to stand up for what's right.
RAFAEL: That's rare.
DAVID: And she even turned Paul around over a compensation issue for the original residents.
RAFAEL: Compensation? For what?
DAVID: It's… nothing. Amy's awesome. I'm just glad we figured out she's our sister.
David goes to get more beers, as Rafael looks intrigued.
Terese is playing solitaire in the garden, when Piper shows up.
PIPER: Red five on black six, second column.
Terese follows Piper's tip, but says nothing.
PIPER: I was rude to you this morning at the naming ceremony, and I shouldn't have been. I'm sorry.
TERESE: That's okay.
PIPER: And I'm also sorry that I didn't offer to help when you fell. I didn't know that you'd been drinking.
TERESE: … It was a one- off. It won't happen again.
PIPER: Gary came over (…) He loves you. You're lucky to have him.
TERESE: Yeah, I am.
PIPER: I used to have that person. You know? A rock. Someone who was in my corner. And I don't anymore. And I know that you had your reasons, Mum, and you thought you were doing the right thing. But every time I'm around you, I'm reminded of what I've lost, and it hurts.
TERESE: I'm so sorry. How can I make it up to you?
PIPER: I'm not ready for you to do that yet. But just, please don't drink again, okay? You need to look after yourself too.
David is telling Rafael about Leo, and how different he and David are.
DAVID: But Leo's always got my back, and I'll always have his. What about you and your family?
RAFAEL: Only child.
DAVID: Ah, spoilt rotten.
RAFAEL: With what money?
DAVID: Oh, I didn't grow up around all this –
But Gabe's crying interrupts, and David leaves the room to see to him. While he's gone, Rafael decides to do some snooping, and opens a filing cabinet, removing a folder on Robinson Heights. He takes some photos on his phone of what appear to be plots of the construction site, as well as some other documentation – including the reimbursement scheme for the former residents…
Dipi has her theatre group, now including Jack, doing some kind of sailing roleplay.
TOADIE: We may be up this creek, but at least we have a paddle! Arrr!
When someone drops the paddle overboard at Xanthe's suggestion, the group is forced to improvise in order to steer the boat away from a piranha- infested waterfall! Dipi tells Jack it's up to him…
PAIGE: Come on, Jack – it's getting hot in here!
Taking the cue, Jack rips off his shirt and (in a dubious English accent) volunteers it as a sail for the boat – but it ends up draped over Toadie instead! Everybody laughs, and Paige claps along enthusiastically.
Rafael has replaced the folder and is looking through the pictures he's taken on his phone. David returns to the room now Gabe's asleep again, and Rafael hides his phone. David again apologises for the evening not going to plan, but Rafael says it's been great – David's been great. David suggests they take their beers out onto the balcony, but Rafael says he's had a call and needs to go.
He doesn't really elaborate, leaving David looking confused once again as to whether he's done something wrong. He shows Rafael to the lift, saying he hopes they can do it again some time. Rafael says definitely – then thanks David, kisses him on the cheek, and leaves. David still looks confused.
Gary and Terese are talking about her dip in the pond – she's still worried Paul will find out, but Gary assures her that he heard Paul and Leo talking, and that Paul's none the wiser.
GARY: The word is, whoever else saw it – your high heel gave way.
He adds that there's an AA meeting at Eden Hills tomorrow, and that he's been in touch with Sonya, who's happy to video- chat with Terese about her drinking from California. Terese kisses him.
TERESE: Gary Canning, I think you have this situation covered.
GARY: Wasn't that hard. Well, I know I fell apart with the cancer, and I'm sorry I wasn't the support you needed.
TERESE: You were supportive. Don't ever think that you weren't.
GARY: This time, I'm ready. You need a rock – I'm Uluru.
He assures her that likewise, she'll always be there for Piper – and in the meantime, he's there to support her. They kiss again.
Sheila and Dipi are at the bar when Steph turns up, and sees Jack and Paige at the table in the corner. Steph asks Dipi and Sheila if they're on a date; Sheila assures Steph that it's just a baby- free night, and she's sure that Jack wouldn't have moved on this quickly. But Steph looks worried.
DIPI: Yeah, I remember those child- free nights. You milk them for as long as you can, eh?
SHEILA: Oh, Shane's still a romantic. I've seen you two.
DIPI: I can't complain, especially compared to poor Susan and what Izzy's asking of Ka–
Dipi realises she's gossiping, and stops – but Sheila's already intrigued.
SHEILA: Tell me *everything*.
Meanwhile, Paige and Jack continue to enjoy one another's company in the corner, agreeing it's been an awesome night. Paige says it's nice to take things slow, and Jack agrees. However, they see Steph looking at them from the bar, and everybody looks awkward.
Rafael is asleep in bed – again tossing and turning due to the recurring nightmare about him being on fire. This time, we see a smirking Paul in the dream, watching Rafael burn. Rafael wakes up in a cold sweat, gasping.
He goes to the communal computer in the reception area, and logs onto The Search Engine™, typing in ‘West Waratah Star'. But Jack comes in, interrupting, and asks him how his night was with the ‘third wheel'; he's heard that David was babysitting Gabe, whom Jack explains is his son.
RAFAEL: Small world.
JACK: Yes, everyone knows everyone around here.
Rafael confirms he had a good evening, and Jack bids him goodnight, leaving him to it. Rafael visits the ‘contact us' page on the West Waratah Star website, and sends the photographed documents regarding the reimbursement scheme to the newspaper!
